<p dir="ltr">Sunday morning, August 31, 2025, the lush Nirwana mess field burst into a spectacle of vibrant costumes, bold face paint, and fiery enthusiasm. A space that is usually calm transformed into a sea of creativity. Traditional music blended with cheers as PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP), a business unit of Harita Nickel, kicked off its 4th annual carnival.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Each year, the carnival serves as the grand finale of the Independence Day celebrations. This time, carrying the theme “Eastern Indonesia Shines,” the stage became a powerful symbol of unity—reflecting the life of employees whose diversity is bound by a shared purpose.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">A total of 18 contingents from various departments and contractor partners delivered their best performances. From the stomping rhythms of the Cakalele dance, the graceful flow of Soya-soya, to the adrenaline-pumping bambu gila attraction, employees stepped beyond their roles as workers to proudly embody artists showcasing their ancestral heritage.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Amid the festivity, Younsel Evand Roos, Harita Nickel’s Operations Director, expressed gratitude: “Alhamdulillah, we are still able to gather with such joy. This carnival, rooted in Indonesia’s cultural richness, clearly brings out a stronger sense of togetherness.”&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">For him, the event carried meaning beyond entertainment. “Each group is challenged to build a solid team, requiring patience, discipline, and commitment. These are the very values we need every day in the workplace,” Younsel emphasized.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">The highlight of the day came with the announcement of winners. The Management Group—an alliance of ten departments ranging from Finance, IT, Geology &amp; Mine Planning, to Business Development—was crowned first place.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Team leader Charles Deni Nelson Auparai reflected on the challenges they faced: “Our spirit was to unite differences. We came from many departments, but also from different regions, tribes, islands, and languages. The challenge was big, but here, we became one,” he said.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">According to Charles, their success hinged on humility. “We were not only practicing dance—we were practicing Indonesia. We were living out Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity). Hopefully, this spirit of mutual respect will continue to guide us in our daily work.”&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Occupational Health, Safety, and Training (OHST) Department took second place and also secured the overall title, followed by the Human Resource &amp; General Affair (HRGA) Department in third.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">The announcement of winners officially closed TBP’s 80th Independence Day celebration series. Yet, while the event concluded, the spirit of unity it fostered will continue to live on—embedded in the company’s daily work culture. []</p>

Eastern Indonesia Shines: Unity Spirit Lights Up Harita Nickel Carnival

<p>In the forests of Obi Island, North Maluku, including former mine sites restored by Harita Nickel, Niksen Tindatu now walks with a new purpose. Once he hunted cuscuses and birds; today he protects their freedom in the wild.</p>
<p>A native of Tobelo, Niksen joined Harita Nickel in 2016 as part of the planting and garden maintenance crew in the Human Resources & General Affairs (HRGA) Department of PT Megah Surya Pertiwi, a business unit of Harita Nickel. Two years later, he moved to the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Department, a small step that sparked a life-changing transformation.
</p>
<p>“Before joining Harita Nickel, I hunted for food to sell, so my family could survive. I didn’t know those animals were protected,” Niksen recalls.
</p>
<p>Working with the Environment team changed his perspective. The forest was no longer just a hunting ground, it became a sanctuary for endangered species. The change was not instant; Niksen faced inner struggles every time he released an animal he had caught.
</p>
<p>According to Agung Sunardi Munim, HSE Supervisor at Harita Nickel, Niksen’s hunting background turned out to be an asset. “He knows exactly where the animals are. At first, it was hard for him to let them go, but now he is at the forefront of the fight against wildlife poaching,” he said.

<p>Today, Niksen has not only given up hunting but also actively monitors the Obi cuscus (<i>Phalanger rothschildi</i>) and sailfin lizard (<i>Hydrosaurus weberi</i>), two endemic species found only on the island.
</p>
<p>His transformation mirrors Harita Nickel’s broader efforts to protect biodiversity, through regular monitoring, habitat restoration, and community education. Since the second quarter of 2025, the conservation team has been delivering wildlife preservation lessons to students in Kawasi and Soligi villages. To date, 90 kindergarten and elementary school students have learned about the animals in their surroundings.
</p>
<p>Sephy Noerfahmy, Conservation Superintendent at Harita Nickel, emphasizes the role of education. “Niksen’s story proves that knowledge can turn a hunter into a protector,” she said.
</p>
<p>Now, when Niksen enters the forest, he carries a torch and a notebook&mdash;not a rifle. He looks for signs of the very creatures he once pursued, ensuring they remain. For Niksen, within every thick branch and whisper of the night lies Obi Island’s future&mdash;one he hopes to pass on, alive and whole, to generations to come.

From Rifle to Torch: The Journey of Niksen Tindatu in Safeguarding Obi’s Endemic Wildlife

<p>Many people think working in the nickel industry is only about mining or operating heavy equipment. In fact, Harita Nickel is an integrated company&mdash;not only mining, but also processing and refining nickel into higher-value products. This complexity is experienced by Almendo Lasera, a young talent from North Maluku who is now a Foreman at the Acid Plant, Production Department.</p>
<p>As a graduate of Sam Ratulangi University in Manado, with a major in Chemistry (2015–2020), Almendo views his career journey at Harita Nickel as a valuable opportunity to sharpen both his technical and leadership skills. In his daily work, he is responsible for ensuring that production processes at the Acid Plant run according to parameters and standard operating procedures (SOP). Precision is crucial, since even the smallest mistake can affect both the equipment and the final product. The Acid Plant operates to produce sulfuric acid for the High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) process, which is then used to create raw materials for Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) batteries for electric vehicles.
</p>
<p>Although his main focus is smooth production, Almendo emphasizes that workplace safety is the top priority. He wants to ensure that every team member can work safely and return home without risk of accidents. For him, safety is not just a rule, but a personal awareness that must be ingrained in every individual. “If we are aware that safety is important, naturally we will safeguard it, both for ourselves and for our colleagues,” he explained.

<p>Leading a diverse team of local employees and expatriates has given him valuable lessons. This requires him to be patient, open-minded, and adaptable to ensure effective teamwork.&nbsp; For Almendo, being a foreman is not only about giving directions but also about listening to team members so they feel respected and valued.

<p>For Almendo, technical knowledge matters, but soft skills and the willingness to learn are the real keys to success. He encourages the youth of North Maluku to dare to try and always be prepared for opportunities that arise. “This company values people with potential. What matters most is being ready when the opportunity comes,” he said.
</p>
<p>Behind his dedication at work, Almendo always keeps his family as his main source of inspiration. His wife, child, and parents motivate him to continue growing with Harita Nickel. Through his role in the Acid Plant, he contributes to a modern process that transforms nickel ore into an essential material for the electric vehicle battery industry. <p>August always brings back the spirit of independence. This year, Harita Nickel’s 80th Independence Day celebration became a festival of togetherness, stretching from Obi Island to Jakarta.</p>
<p>Under the unifying theme “Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga Energi Kemerdekaan” (One Harita, Preserving the Energy of Independence), employees enjoyed sports competitions, traditional games, music and dance performances, and even a fun run. Together, they created a vibrant mosaic of unity across locations.
</p>
<h2>Festivities at Obi Site
</h2><p>The celebrations at the Obi site began as early as July. <p>The peak came on August 16. PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) hosted Herophoria 4, a Star Wars–themed event featuring dances, songs, and DJ music by employees. On the same evening, PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) closed the festivities with a musical drama and dance performances by employees.

<p>“We must be One Harita, looking out for each other, working together, maintaining communication, and above all, prioritizing safety,” said Dian Kristiyanto, Technical Support Manager of PT HPL, in his remarks.

<h2>From Obi to Jakarta

<p>In Labuha, the celebration took a modest but equally warm form through traditional games such as kerupuk-eating contests, spoon marble races, and dominoes.

<p>The same energy echoed in Jakarta’s Head Office. From July through August, employees joined competitions including badminton, tennis, chess, Mobile Legends, singing, and a fun run. The festivities culminated on August 15 with an office decoration contest, where departments transformed their spaces with the theme of Indonesian Legends.

<h2>The Meaning of Togetherness

<p>Wrapping up the celebration, Yohanes, Head of HRGA Harita Nickel, emphasized, “The energy contributed by all Harita employees is the energy to build Indonesia, to ensure environmental, social, and economic sustainability, framed within Good Mining Practice. Beyond games and entertainment, the 80th Independence Day celebration was an opportunity to connect, strengthen collaboration, and reaffirm that Harita Nickel is truly a Great Place to Work.”

The 80th Independence Day Celebration: Harita Nickel’s Togetherness from Obi to Jakarta

<p>Harita Nickel successfully conducted a Large-Scale Emergency Response Drill (LSE) from July 27-29, 2025, at its operational site on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. With the theme "Integrated Management of Natural and Technological Disasters," the event was designed to test and enhance the company's emergency response system capabilities in facing complex, multi-hazard scenarios.</p>
<p>The LSE was held in strategic partnership with the Disaster Risk Reduction Center (DRRC) of the University of Indonesia, a leading institution renowned for its expertise in disaster risk management.
</p>
<p>The drill involved active participation of the management team, emergency response team, and at least 300 employee representatives from all of Harita Nickel's business units at Site Obi. Also present as observers were representatives from government agencies, including the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Health Agency, and the Environmental Agency (DLH) of South Halmahera Regency, as well as the Kawasi Village Government.

<p>The training scenario involved a high-magnitude earthquake triggering a potential tsunami, directly impacting a number of the company's vital facilities. The series of drills covered several crucial stages, from the activation of the early warning system and mass evacuation to safe assembly points, to victim handling simulations.
</p>
<p>Supriyanto Suwarno, Occupational Health and Safety Manager at Harita Nickel, emphasized the importance of this activity. "Obi Island is blessed with beautiful natural scenery and rich natural resources, but it also carries a high potential for disasters with two active faults. As Harita Nickel has significant investments here, we are obligated to protect all our assets: our employees, our facilities, and the sustainability of our business and the surrounding community as part of our corporate social responsibility," he stated.
</p>
<p>According to Supriyanto, this LSE represents the culmination of a series of mitigation efforts undertaken by the company. "This training is crucial for enhancing the preparedness of our employees and management. It allows us to identify areas for improvement. According to information from DRRC UI, this is the largest and most complex LSE they have ever facilitated, given the simultaneous involvement of six business units," he added.

<p>During the drill, roles of all elements within the Incident Command System (ICS) structure were rigorously tested. This included the integrated Crisis Management Team (CMT), composed of leaders of each business unit, Incident Commander leading the emergency response team in each unit, as well as activation of the HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials) team, medical teams, and cross-business-unit emergency logistics coordination.
</p>
<p>Based on the post-drill evaluation led by Prof. Fatma Lestari, S.Si, M.Si, Ph.D., Head of DRRC at University of Indonesia, several positive outcomes were noted. These included effective functioning of the ICS command structure and flow, an average evacuation time of under 12 minutes&mdash;surpassing the set target of 15 minutes&mdash;and a field team response that was fully aligned with standard procedures. Additionally, several areas for improvement were identified, such as strengthening personnel capacity and the emergency communication system.
</p>
<p>"In our assessment, this activity was 90 percent successful. The remaining 10 percent is attributed to it being a drill, not an actual emergency," Prof. Fatma remarked.
</p>
<p>Harita Nickel's proactive measures received high praise from the local government. Riski Triandini Ariesta, Head of Prevention and Preparedness at the South Halmahera BPBD, who attended as an observer, welcomed the initiative.
</p>
<p>"We highly appreciate the steps Harita has taken. The business sector plays a vital role in disaster management, as it is a shared responsibility. Based on disaster risk index studies, South Halmahera Regency ranks as the second highest in Indonesia. Drills like this are crucial to ensure that every party knows their duties and responsibilities and does not panic when a disaster occurs," Riski explained.

<p>Her party expressed hope that this collaboration will continue and be strengthened to support a comprehensive disaster management effort.
</p>
<p>The successful implementation of this LSE reaffirms Harita Nickel's position as an industry leader that not only focuses on operational performance but also places safety, preparedness, and social responsibility as its top priorities.

Harita Nickel Successfully Holds Large-Scale Emergency Response Drill, Strengthening Disaster Preparedness on Obi Island

<p>Ever imagined a kangaroo-like animal living in trees? Meet the Obi Cuscus (Phalanger rothschildi), a unique, tree-dwelling marsupial endemic to Obi Island and its smaller surrounding islands. Weighing around 1.3 kilograms, this nocturnal creature rests during the day in hidden nests among leaves.</p>
<p>Just like kangaroos, the mother cuscus carries her young in a pouch until they can survive independently. Its brownish-orange or greyish-black fur, yellowish-white belly, and dark back stripe effectively camouflage it within dense foliage.
</p>
<p>At night, the Obi Cuscus roams the forest canopy in search of its favorite fruits like betel, kersen (Jamaica cherry), and awar-awar (fig species). Along its journey, it unknowingly helps spread seeds and strengthen forest regeneration. That's why it's considered one of Obi Island's natural seed dispersers.
</p>
<p>Although its current conservation status is "Least Concern" according to the IUCN, the Obi Cuscus still faces threats from illegal hunting. Protecting its habitat and educating the community are crucial to maintaining a stable population.
</p>
<h3><strong>Conserving Obi Island's Endemic Wildlife</strong></h3>
<p>As a company operating on Obi Island, Harita Nickel is committed to balancing industrial activities with environmental preservation. The Obi Cuscus is just one of many endemic animals found on Obi Island.
</p>
<p>This commitment is realized through various initiatives, ranging from biodiversity monitoring to the gradual and measured rehabilitation of impacted areas. Additionally, environmental education is a vital pillar in Harita Nickel's operations, involving not only Indonesian and foreign employees but also the local community. This underscores Harita Nickel's commitment, along with all its partners, to implement Sustainability and Biodiversity policies, which are the responsibility of everyone within the company.

<p>Sephy Noerfahmy, Conservation Superintendent at Harita Nickel, stated that the company continuously strives to raise awareness about the importance of preserving endemic wildlife among both employees and local communities. “Since the second quarter of 2025, we've regularly conducted educational sessions for school students in Kawasi and Soligi Villages, empowering them as ambassadors for wildlife conservation,” said Sephy.

<p>To date, 90 kindergarten and elementary school students in Kawasi Village have received information about the endemic animals inhabiting the forests and gardens around their homes. This initiative aims to foster pride and awareness of the importance of conservation from a young age.&nbsp;

<p>A work culture that supports animal and habitat preservation continues to be built through regular socialization on the prohibition of wildlife hunting and the importance of maintaining ecosystem balance in mining areas. Conserving the Obi Cuscus: Obi Island's Unique Endemic Wildlife

<p>Nickel is a vital metal widely <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/media/kabar-obi/highlight/ini-dia-kegunaan-dan-manfaat-nikel-dalam-kehidupan-sehari-hari">used</a> in various modern industries, from electronics and electric vehicle (EV) batteries to stainless steel production. However, nickel isn't simply found as a shiny metal on the surface of the earth. So what exactly does it look like in nature?</p>
<h3>What is Nickel?</h3>
<p>Nickel (Ni) is a strong, rust-resistant, silvery-white metallic element with magnetic properties. In everyday life, we often encounter nickel in processed products such as alloys, but seldom see its natural form.
</p>

<h3>Nickel in Nature: Like Ordinary Soil, But Highly Valuable</h3>

<p>Nickel doesn't occur naturally as a pure, shiny metal. Instead, it's found in the form of nickel ore&mdash;rock or soil that contains a certain amount of nickel and can be processed for extraction.</p>
<p>What does this nickel ore look like? It often appears as ordinary soil or rock. Here are some visual examples of nickel in nature:</p>
<h5>● Nickel Laterite:
</h5>
<ol><li>Similar in appearance to red or yellowish-brown soil.</li><li>Its texture is like clay or dense loam.</li><li>Commonly found in tropical regions such as Indonesia and the Philippines.</li><li>Contains nickel-rich minerals such as limonite and garnierite.</li></ol>
<h5>● Nickel Sulfide:
</h5>
<ol><li>A hard rock containing nickel and copper metals.</li><li>Typically found deep in the Earth's crust, the result of ancient volcanic activity.</li></ol>
<h5>● Garnierite (in laterite):
</h5>
<ol><li>Pale to bright green in color.</li><li>Soft, clay-like texture, but with a high nickel content.</li></ol>
<p>If you see a heap of red soil in a nickel mining area, it's most likely laterite nickel ore. It may look like ordinary soil, but its economic value can be pretty high, depending on the nickel content.</p>
<p>In Indonesia, nickel is commonly found in layers of laterite soil, which are soils that are frequently leached by rain. This soil is generally reddish or yellowish in color. <p>From July 30 to August 1, 2025, hundreds of children from across Obi Island gathered in the New Settlement Area of Kawasi Village to take part in the 2025 <strong>Obi Children’s Day Festival,</strong> a warm celebration nurturing creativity, character, and friendship that transcended school boundaries.</p>
<p>Organized by Harita Nickel to commemorate Indonesia’s National Children’s Day, the festival carried the theme <strong>“Joyful Obi, Bright Future.” </strong>A total of 679 participants from 43 schools, from early childhood education (PAUD) to senior high school, joined various competitions in arts, literacy, and quizzes.

<p>“This festival reflects our commitment to building a social environment that supports children’s growth and development, rejects child labor, and upholds their fundamental rights,” said Ifan Farianda, Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel.

<p>The initiative also marks the beginning of the “Child-Friendly Village” program, which is expected to continue and expand to reach more areas.

<p>One of the festival’s main attractions was the Clash of Champions quiz competition for junior and senior high school students. SMP 13 South Halmahera clinched the junior high title, while SMAN 06 South Halmahera took top honors in the senior high category.

<p>Children also enjoyed an inspiring storytelling session with professional storyteller Mochammad Awam Prakoso, affectionately known as Kak Awam, who delivered tales rich with messages on the importance of good character.

<p>The gathering brought together children from remote corners of Obi Island, many meeting peers from other villages for the first time. “This is the first time they’ve met on such a large scale. It gives them a glimpse of a world beyond their villages,” Ifan noted.</p>

<p>For Saimah Kasuba, Head of the Provincial Education Branch Office for the South Halmahera region, the festival stood out as a model of productive collaboration between the private sector and the community.

<p>“Children need spaces to express themselves, and events like this create those opportunities. The government cannot do it alone, and Harita Nickel has shown it is committed to improving education quality in the region,” she said. She also called on parents to take an active role in encouraging and supporting their children’s education.</p>

Obi Children’s Day Festival 2025: Celebrating Creativity and Growth with Harita Nickel

<p>Amid the busy industrial operations on Obi Island, North Maluku, a used oil drum suddenly tipped over, spilling its contents onto the ground. But don’t panic, this wasn’t a real accident. It was part of a hazardous waste (B3) spill response drill conducted by PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), a business unit of Harita Nickel.</p>
<p>In this simulation held within the production area, teams from various departments collaborated efficiently, wearing full protective equipment and following strict emergency procedures.

<p>Muhammad Sulfikar Yona, Environment Compliance Foreman who led the exercise, explained that the simulation aimed to ensure the readiness of all teams in handling unforeseen situations. “We want everyone prepared, not just theoretically, but practically and effectively,” stated Sulfikar.

<p>The drill is part of the implementation of ISO 14001:2015 standards on environmental emergency preparedness and response. “This activity also serves to evaluate the readiness of our equipment and inter-departmental coordination during emergencies,” Sulfikar added.

<p>During the simulation, which took place in the production area, teams from various departments worked shoulder-to-shoulder. The production team moved quickly to contain the spill, while the Environment team supervised and provided technical guidance. Everyone moved in sync, like a well-rehearsed orchestra.

<p>Sulfikar further explained that the drill is conducted at least annually as part of Harita Nickel’s firm commitment to workplace safety and environmental protection. To him, safety and environmental awareness are not the responsibility of one department alone, but a shared duty across the entire organization.

<p>Agung Aribowo, Deputy Department Head of Technical Support at PT HJF, highlighted that the company holds ISO 14001 certification for environmental management and ISO 45001 for occupational safety. These certifications demonstrate that Harita Nickel goes beyond production, ensuring all operational activities are conducted safely, responsibly, and sustainably.

<p>“Simulations like these are not just to fulfill standard obligations but integral to building a robust Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental (OHSE) culture within the company,” Agung explained.
