Reuse of Nickel Slag


Since 2023, Harita Nickel has been innovating to enable the reuse of nickel slag—residual material from the processing of saprolite nickel ore.

In 2024, a total of 228,487 tons of nickel slag was repurposed as raw material for bricks, road construction, and artificial reef structures. Additionally, we have begun exploring the use of nickel slag as a planting medium to support reforestation efforts within the Obi Industrial Area.

 

 

Tailing Management


Tailing refers to the liquid residue produced from nickel refining using High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) technology. Harita Nickel does not dispose of tailing into the sea; instead, we employ a method known as a Dry Stack Tailing Facility.
Facility
In this method, the tailing is filtered to separate solids from liquids. The liquid portion is then neutralized and recirculated back into the HPAL facility for reuse, while the dry, solid tailing is used to rehabilitate former mining areas.

Currently, Harita Nickel is developing a pilot project to extract iron content from the tailing.

Processing of Other Non-Hazardous Waste


Harita Nickel operates a 3.3-hectare Integrated Waste Processing Facility to manage household waste generated across the entire complex, including canteens, kitchens, living quarters, and offices.
Offices
In the future, organic waste will be processed to produce methane gas, which can be used as fuel for stoves, as well as converted into fertilizer. Inorganic waste will be incinerated, with the resulting ash repurposed as a material for concrete blocks and bricks.
