Sunday morning, August 31, 2025, the lush Nirwana mess field burst into a spectacle of vibrant costumes, bold face paint, and fiery enthusiasm. A space that is usually calm transformed into a sea of creativity. Traditional music blended with cheers as PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP), a business unit of Harita Nickel, kicked off its 4th annual carnival.&nbsp;
Each year, the carnival serves as the grand finale of the Independence Day celebrations. This time, carrying the theme “Eastern Indonesia Shines,” the stage became a powerful symbol of unity—reflecting the life of employees whose diversity is bound by a shared purpose.&nbsp;

A total of 18 contingents from various departments and contractor partners delivered their best performances. From the stomping rhythms of the Cakalele dance, the graceful flow of Soya-soya, to the adrenaline-pumping bambu gila attraction, employees stepped beyond their roles as workers to proudly embody artists showcasing their ancestral heritage.&nbsp;
Amid the festivity, Younsel Evand Roos, Harita Nickel’s Operations Director, expressed gratitude: “Alhamdulillah, we are still able to gather with such joy. This carnival, rooted in Indonesia’s cultural richness, clearly brings out a stronger sense of togetherness.”&nbsp;
For him, the event carried meaning beyond entertainment. “Each group is challenged to build a solid team, requiring patience, discipline, and commitment. These are the very values we need every day in the workplace,” Younsel emphasized.&nbsp;

The highlight of the day came with the announcement of winners. The Management Group—an alliance of ten departments ranging from Finance, IT, Geology &amp; Mine Planning, to Business Development—was crowned first place.&nbsp;
Team leader Charles Deni Nelson Auparai reflected on the challenges they faced: “Our spirit was to unite differences. We came from many departments, but also from different regions, tribes, islands, and languages. The challenge was big, but here, we became one,” he said.&nbsp;
According to Charles, their success hinged on humility. “We were not only practicing dance—we were practicing Indonesia. We were living out Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity). Hopefully, this spirit of mutual respect will continue to guide us in our daily work.”&nbsp;
The Occupational Health, Safety, and Training (OHST) Department took second place and also secured the overall title, followed by the Human Resource &amp; General Affair (HRGA) Department in third.&nbsp;
The announcement of winners officially closed TBP’s 80th Independence Day celebration series. Yet, while the event concluded, the spirit of unity it fostered will continue to live on—embedded in the company’s daily work culture. []

Eastern Indonesia Shines: Unity Spirit Lights Up Harita Nickel Carnival

August always brings back the spirit of independence. This year, Harita Nickel’s 80th Independence Day celebration became a festival of togetherness, stretching from Obi Island to Jakarta.
Under the unifying theme “Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga Energi Kemerdekaan” (One Harita, Preserving the Energy of Independence), employees enjoyed sports competitions, traditional games, music and dance performances, and even a fun run. Together, they created a vibrant mosaic of unity across locations.

<h2>Festivities at Obi Site
</h2>The celebrations at the Obi site began as early as July. The futsal court was filled with cheers, Mobile Legends tournaments kept everyone on edge, and traditional games sparked laughter and joy.&nbsp;Creativity also flourished with Master Chef, Battle Dance, and Harita Idol, giving employees a stage to express themselves.<figure><img alt="16082025 photo malam puncak hjf 227 11zon" src="https://apiharitanikel.dipstrategy.co.id/storage/images/old/images/16082025_Photo Malam Puncak HJF_227_11zon.jpg"></figure>
The peak came on August 16. PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) hosted Herophoria 4, a Star Wars–themed event featuring dances, songs, and DJ music by employees. On the same evening, PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) closed the festivities with a musical drama and dance performances by employees.

“We must be One Harita, looking out for each other, working together, maintaining communication, and above all, prioritizing safety,” said Dian Kristiyanto, Technical Support Manager of PT HPL, in his remarks.

In Ternate, employees gathered at Sulamadaha Beach for an employee gathering with tug-of-war, water volleyball, and musical chairs that brought laughter and strengthened bonds.

In Labuha, the celebration took a modest but equally warm form through traditional games such as kerupuk-eating contests, spoon marble races, and dominoes.

The same energy echoed in Jakarta’s Head Office. From July through August, employees joined competitions including badminton, tennis, chess, Mobile Legends, singing, and a fun run. The festivities culminated on August 15 with an office decoration contest, where departments transformed their spaces with the theme of Indonesian Legends.

Wrapping up the celebration, Yohanes, Head of HRGA Harita Nickel, emphasized, “The energy contributed by all Harita employees is the energy to build Indonesia, to ensure environmental, social, and economic sustainability, framed within Good Mining Practice. Beyond games and entertainment, the 80th Independence Day celebration was an opportunity to connect, strengthen collaboration, and reaffirm that Harita Nickel is truly a Great Place to Work.”

The 80th Independence Day Celebration: Harita Nickel’s Togetherness from Obi to Jakarta

From July 30 to August 1, 2025, hundreds of children from across Obi Island gathered in the New Settlement Area of Kawasi Village to take part in the 2025 Obi Children’s Day Festival, a warm celebration nurturing creativity, character, and friendship that transcended school boundaries.
Organized by Harita Nickel to commemorate Indonesia’s National Children’s Day, the festival carried the theme “Joyful Obi, Bright Future.” A total of 679 participants from 43 schools, from early childhood education (PAUD) to senior high school, joined various competitions in arts, literacy, and quizzes.

“This festival reflects our commitment to building a social environment that supports children’s growth and development, rejects child labor, and upholds their fundamental rights,” said Ifan Farianda, Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel.

The initiative also marks the beginning of the “Child-Friendly Village” program, which is expected to continue and expand to reach more areas.

One of the festival’s main attractions was the Clash of Champions quiz competition for junior and senior high school students. SMP 13 South Halmahera clinched the junior high title, while SMAN 06 South Halmahera took top honors in the senior high category.

Children also enjoyed an inspiring storytelling session with professional storyteller Mochammad Awam Prakoso, affectionately known as Kak Awam, who delivered tales rich with messages on the importance of good character.

The gathering brought together children from remote corners of Obi Island, many meeting peers from other villages for the first time. “This is the first time they’ve met on such a large scale. It gives them a glimpse of a world beyond their villages,” Ifan noted.

For Saimah Kasuba, Head of the Provincial Education Branch Office for the South Halmahera region, the festival stood out as a model of productive collaboration between the private sector and the community.

“Children need spaces to express themselves, and events like this create those opportunities. The government cannot do it alone, and Harita Nickel has shown it is committed to improving education quality in the region,” she said. She also called on parents to take an active role in encouraging and supporting their children’s education.
The Obi Children’s Day Festival stands as proof that spaces for children’s expression and growth can be built anywhere, even in the middle of an industrial zone. Children's joy has found its place on Obi Island, where mines and smelters operate.

Obi Children’s Day Festival 2025: Celebrating Creativity and Growth with Harita Nickel

In commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (HANI) on June 26, 2025, Harita Nickel reaffirmed its strict zero-tolerance policy toward the abuse of narcotics, psychotropics, and other harmful addictive substances (drugs). This commitment is part of the company's broader efforts to foster a healthy, safe, and drug-free working environment across all operational units.
Yohanes, Deputy Head of HRGA at Harita Nickel, emphasized the company’s full support for government initiatives aimed at preventing and eliminating drug abuse. “Our zero-tolerance policy is not designed to punish employees, but rather to protect everyone’s safety and maintain a productive and conducive work environment,” Yohanes explained.

As part of this commitment, Harita Nickel actively conducts anti-drug campaigns through routine education and regular drug tests at its operational sites. Recently, PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), PT Obi Nickel Cobalt (ONC), and PT Dharma Cipta Mulia (DCM) conducted urine tests involving approximately 200 randomly selected employees from various departments. Similar initiatives have previously been implemented by PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP).

"This initiative is a continuous effort to ensure that our workplace remains safe, healthy, and free from drug abuse. In the future, we plan to gradually expand testing to cover all employees,” Yohanes added.

Harita Nickel’s site doctor, dr. Dominicus Bintang Mahardhika Jati, explained that workers in extractive industries such as mining often face significant physical and mental pressures. Therefore, regular education and drug screenings are crucial preventive measures. “We continuously educate our employees about the risks of drug abuse and the importance of maintaining optimal physical and mental health to safely perform daily tasks,” said dr. Dominicus.

Taufik Setiadji, Industrial Relations Manager at Harita Nickel, reiterated the company’s firm stance against any form of illicit substance abuse. “Our internal regulations explicitly prohibit employees and contractors from bringing, possessing, using, or distributing drugs within our operational areas,” Taufik affirmed.

He added that a healthy work environment isn’t just about good facilities, it also depends on the commitment of each person. By promoting a drug-free culture, Harita Nickel wants to create a safe and productive workplace for all.

Harita Nickel Reinforces Commitment to a Drug-Free Workplace

Harita Nickel concluded its 2025 World Environment Day (WED) commemoration series with the Harita Youth Forum, an educational initiative aimed at engaging the company’s younger generation. This year’s forum carried the theme “SDGs and Responsible Mining” and was attended by over 200 participants from various Harita Nickel business units operating on Obi Island.
The event featured Dr. Tri Edhi Budhi Soesilo, M.Si., a lecturer from the School of Environmental Sciences, University of Indonesia, as the keynote speaker. In his presentation, Dr. Budhi emphasized the critical importance of integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into industrial operations, particularly within the mining sector, which has a profound impact on social, economic, and environmental dimensions.

He introduced the Responsible Mining approach–mining practices that strike a balance between economic productivity, ecosystem protection, and respect for the rights of local communities.

“Doing no harm, doing good, and doing it transparently,” he remarked, underlining that sustainability must begin with a strong understanding of local context and inclusive community engagement in development efforts.

Before the discussion session, participants viewed the documentary Ngomi O Obi (“We Who Live in Obi”), which portrays the daily lives of Obi Island residents who live alongside nickel mining activities. The film offered an authentic perspective on the social and environmental challenges faced by local communities, while also reinforcing the importance of inclusive and sustainable mining practices.

Harita Nickel’s commitment to environmental responsibility was also reaffirmed by Retno Dewi Handayani, Green Mining Manager, who emphasized that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility. She encouraged all Harita employees to adopt simple, proactive habits, such as reducing single-use plastics and bringing personal tumblers to work.

“Carrying a tumbler and minimizing single-use plastic are small actions that can grow into collective habits, fostering a stronger environmental culture,” she stated.

The interactive Q&A session added valuable depth to the forum. In addressing a question regarding the practical challenges of implementing SDGs, Dr. Budhi emphasized that the success of sustainability initiatives ultimately depends on collective human awareness.

“No regulation will be effective without the consciousness of the people behind it,” he stated firmly.

This insight marked a fitting conclusion to the Harita Youth Forum, which successfully integrated academic perspectives, community realities, and the collaborative spirit of Harita personnel. As environmental challenges continue to evolve, Harita Nickel reaffirms its commitment to engaging the younger generation in advancing responsible and sustainable mining practices.

Harita Youth Forum 2025: A Collaborative Effort Toward Responsible Mining

Every day, plastic waste from operational activities and employee routines accumulates, posing significant environmental challenges. However, the Laboratory team at PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), a business unit of Harita Nickel, has innovatively turned this plastic waste into valuable energy through the “From Waste to Energy” project.
The method used is pyrolysis, a thermal decomposition process performed in the absence of oxygen. This process breaks down plastic into oil, gas, and solid residues without burning it. The primary product, a mixed fuel in liquid form, has been successfully used to support various technical operations in the field.

“We aim to address environmental challenges not merely through discussions but through tangible actions,” said Willy Kesuma Dewadi, Head of Technical Support at MSP.

The project, titled “From Waste to Energy,” follows a structured approach: providing designated plastic bins, sorting the plastic waste, building a pyrolysis machine, and testing the final product. Through this process, the team has successfully converted 1,236 kilograms of plastic waste per year into an alternative, cost-effective, environmentally friendly and sustainable energy source.

Economically, this innovation offers significant advantages. With the machine using only 500 watts of power and electricity costing around IDR 1,699 per kWh, production costs are much lower than the market price of plastic-based fuel, which can reach IDR 7,000 per liter. This results in a potential value gain of around IDR 5,300 per liter.

Charles Hasiholan, Deputy Head of HSE and Security at Harita Nickel, emphasized that this project's benefits extend beyond mere cost efficiency. “This initiative clearly demonstrates the company's commitment to environmental sustainability and circular economy practices,” he said.

The project was also featured in the Harita Continuous Improvement (HCI) 2024 competition, an annual event encouraging employees to create real innovations in operations, safety, and environmental management. Internal data shows strong implementation results: 100% completion of the initial stages through to production, and 94% success in fuel testing. Field use of the mixed fuel has reached 67% and continues to grow as technical adjustments are made.

“From Waste to Energy is more than just a technical project. It’s a new way of looking at waste, not as a problem, but as an opportunity for the future of alternative energy,” Willy concluded, proudly showing the team’s homemade pyrolysis machine.&nbsp;

Harita Nickel Turns Plastic Waste Into Alternative Energy

Harita Nickel has introduced a sustainable innovation for domestic wastewater treatment by converting used plastic bottles into an efficient biofilter medium. Through a project named Nirwana Brush, the company's Environment & Business Improvement Department has developed an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution for wastewater treatment plants (IPAL), particularly at the Nirwana employee accommodation facility operated by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk.
The Nirwana IPAL facility utilizes both aerobic and anaerobic wastewater treatment systems. Both methods rely heavily on biofilter media as a habitat for decomposer microorganisms that play a crucial role in purifying wastewater.

“Usually, we buy biofilter media from suppliers, and it’s quite expensive. Meanwhile, used plastic bottles are available and largely unused,” said M. Saifullah N, a Project Engineer at Harita Nickel.

In this innovation, used plastic bottles collected from the office surroundings are processed through cleaning, cutting, and structured using iron wire to support microbial growth. Laboratory testing confirmed the system's effectiveness, reducing Total Suspended Solids (TSS) from 49 mg/L down to 3 mg/L&mdash;an efficiency rate of approximately 93.87%.

“With this approach, we’re not only saving costs but also contributing to the reduction of plastic waste, which is notoriously difficult to decompose,” added Ipul, as the Obi-born engineer is known.

“We asked our coworkers to donate used bottles, and many responded positively. It shows that environmental awareness can grow through simple, real actions,” said Dedi Amrin, Manager of Environment & Business Improvement at Harita Nickel.

With proven results, the project marks a promising first step toward more efficient and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment systems. “Our hope is that this recycling concept can become a new standard for wastewater management across Harita Nickel business units that operate similar treatment systems,” Dedi concluded.

Nirwana Brush: Harita Nickel Turns Plastic Waste into Wastewater Treatment Solution

In the mineral processing industry, waste is often seen as a problem. But through a program called Energizing Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) from Waste to Eco-Efficiency, Harita Nickel has changed that view by turning used activated carbon into an efficient alternative energy source.
GAC plays an important role in the purification process, which is a continuation of the High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) process, a technology used to extract nickel and cobalt from laterite ore. “GAC is made from coconut shells or fibers, which are eventually burned and turned into charcoal,” said Catur Prasetyo, Laboratory Staff at Harita Nickel’s Power Plant.

In this process, GAC helps remove organic compounds and contaminants from the sulfate solution. This improves the quality of the final product and protects the equipment from damage caused by impurities.

Once used, GAC becomes hazardous waste (B3), and Harita Nickel generates more than 1,300 tons of it each year. This challenge soon emerged: in addition to the high costs of handling and transportation, the buildup of this waste also poses risks to the environment and workplace safety.

“Instead of letting it become waste, we tried to revive this used GAC through controlled combustion, with emissions tested to meet the standards set by the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 15 of 2019. The results were remarkable: not only did it produce heat that could be reused, but it also significantly reduced the volume of solid waste,” said Catur.
This project follows strict sustainability standards and was even included in Harita’s internal competition, the Harita Continuous Improvement (HCI) program. “The combustion of used GAC is done in a closed system at the Power Plant. With this method, carbon emissions can be reduced, energy efficiency improved, and waste disposal costs minimized, bringing added value to mineral processing operations.

“GAC waste has the potential to be used as an alternative fuel because it contains 5,500 calories per gram,” said Adrianus Adityawardana, Superintendent of the Harita Nickel Power Plant.

Adrianus further noted that this innovation has the potential to be replicated across various Harita Nickel operational units. This initiative also strengthens Harita’s leadership in supporting the sustainability mission of Indonesia’s nickel industry, in line with advancing downstreaming through green innovation.

As pressure grows for extractive industries to be more eco-conscious, initiatives like this show real action. It’s not just about new technology, but a new way of thinking and beginning of new opportunities.

Turning Activated Carbon Waste into Energy: Harita Nickel’s Sustainable Innovation

PT Obi Sinar Timur (OST),&nbsp;one of Harita Group's affiliated companies, has adopted emission control technologies to minimize the environmental impact of its coal-fired power plant (PLTU) operations in Kawasi Village, Obi Subdistrict, South Halmahera, North Maluku. This initiative is a vital part of the company’s commitment to responsible environmental management.
Amiruddin, Deputy Head of Technical Support at PT OST, stated that the company currently operates a power plant with a total capacity of 910 MW, out of an installed capacity of 1,670 MW&mdash;part of which is still under construction. The power plant consists of one 150 MW unit and four units of 380 MW each.
 
“To improve air quality management, each unit has been equipped with emission control technology tailored to its operational characteristics,” he explained.
 
Amiruddin further elaborated that each power plant stack is fitted with a calibrated Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS). This equipment provides real-time emissions data for parameters including Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂), Nitrogen Oxides (NOₓ), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Mercury (Hg), and Particulate Matter. The system is directly connected to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry’s Industrial Emissions Monitoring Information System (SISPEK).
 
To reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, all generating units are equipped with low-NOₓ burners, which are designed to minimize NOₓ formation at the combustion stage by precisely controlling temperature and airflow. Meanwhile, to capture particulate matter from combustion, exhaust gases are first passed through an Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP)&mdash;a technology that uses an electric field to trap fine particles, resulting in extremely low particulate levels in the air released through the stacks.
 
Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) emissions are controlled using different approaches depending on the unit capacity. The 150 MW unit utilizes a limestone injection system that reacts directly with SO₂ gases inside the boiler furnace. For the 380 MW units, the company employs Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) technology&mdash;recognized as one of the most effective methods for reducing sulfur content in industrial flue gas at scale.
 
Amiruddin emphasized that all emission control processes are closely monitored using the CEMS, which can instantly detect changes in emission levels. “With this technology, we can ensure that all emissions released meet the applicable standards,” he added.
 
Through this approach, Harita Group demonstrates that industrial sustainability does not have to come at the expense of air quality and environmental health. This commitment aligns with the company’s broader efforts to support responsible and sustainable national nickel downstream development.

Harita Group Implements Emission Control Technologies to Safeguard Air Quality

Business and manufacturing are just one aspect of Harita Nickel. Equally crucial is making sure the company's presence has observable and significant positive effects for nearby communities. The Harita Nickel 2024 Sustainability Report demonstrates this dedication by indicating that community empowerment initiatives scored 89 on the Community Satisfaction Index (classified as Very Good) and had an average Social Return on Investment (SROI) of 2.62&mdash;meaning every Rp1 invested produced Rp2.62 in social value.
Ranging from microenterprise growth to food security, these initiatives address a great spectrum of community needs. For example, HOP Mart run by 16 local people made Rp2.9 billion in 2024. Other projects, such RUTE (Rumah Usaha Tangguh Ekonomi)&mdash;focused on tofu and tempeh manufacture&mdash;earned Rp580 million, while Nyala Café, run by people in the area, made Rp836 million in revenue.
 
Harita Nickel's CSR team spearheaded a participatory strategy that underpins this achievement. Guided by a Community Development Master Plan that fits with both local and national laws, every program is planned using social impact assessments and a human rights–based methodology.
