Nickel is a vital metal widely <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/media/kabar-obi/highlight/ini-dia-kegunaan-dan-manfaat-nikel-dalam-kehidupan-sehari-hari">used</a> in various modern industries, from electronics and electric vehicle (EV) batteries to stainless steel production. However, nickel isn't simply found as a shiny metal on the surface of the earth. So what exactly does it look like in nature?
<h3>What is Nickel?</h3>
Nickel (Ni) is a strong, rust-resistant, silvery-white metallic element with magnetic properties. In everyday life, we often encounter nickel in processed products such as alloys, but seldom see its natural form.


<h3>Nickel in Nature: Like Ordinary Soil, But Highly Valuable</h3>

Nickel doesn't occur naturally as a pure, shiny metal. Instead, it's found in the form of nickel ore&mdash;rock or soil that contains a certain amount of nickel and can be processed for extraction.
What does this nickel ore look like? It often appears as ordinary soil or rock. Here are some visual examples of nickel in nature:

</h5>
<ol><li>Similar in appearance to red or yellowish-brown soil.</li><li>Its texture is like clay or dense loam.</li><li>Commonly found in tropical regions such as Indonesia and the Philippines.</li><li>Contains nickel-rich minerals such as limonite and garnierite.</li></ol>
<h5>● Nickel Sulfide:
</h5>
<ol><li>A hard rock containing nickel and copper metals.</li><li>Typically found deep in the Earth's crust, the result of ancient volcanic activity.</li></ol>
<h5>● Garnierite (in laterite):
</h5>
<ol><li>Pale to bright green in color.</li><li>Soft, clay-like texture, but with a high nickel content.</li></ol>
If you see a heap of red soil in a nickel mining area, it's most likely laterite nickel ore. It may look like ordinary soil, but its economic value can be pretty high, depending on the nickel content.
In Indonesia, nickel is commonly found in layers of laterite soil, which are soils that are frequently leached by rain. This soil is generally reddish or yellowish in color. This contrasts with nickel found on other continents, such as Australia, where it is generally in the form of nickel sulfide, requiring deeper excavation because it is mostly found below the surface.
At Harita Nickel, the nickel ore found in laterite layers is processed using two main nickel processing methods:<a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/media/kabar-obi/highlight/yuk-kenali-proses-pengolahan-nikel-di-harita-nickel"> Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) and High-Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL)</a>. In the RKEF method, nickel ore is processed into ferronickel, which is then used in the manufacture of stainless steel. In the HPAL method, low-grade nickel ore is processed into Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), nickel sulfate, and cobalt sulfate, all three of which play a crucial role in the manufacture of electric vehicle batteries.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Understanding Nickel's Natural Forms: From Laterite to Sulfide Rocks

Indonesia is home to the world’s largest reserves of nickel ore &mdash; a mineral that plays a critical role across multiple industries, from stainless steel production to electric vehicle batteries. Yet, nickel does not occur in nature as a solid metal. Instead, it is found in the form of nickel ores, of which there are two main types globally: saprolite and limonite.
Although both ores originate from the same rock weathering process, saprolite and limonite differ significantly in terms of composition, color, depth of deposit, and the technologies required for processing.

Here, we take a closer look at the key differences between the two!

<h2>Saprolite Nickel Ore

Often referred to as "high-grade nickel ore," saprolite typically contains between 1.5% and 3.0% nickel.

Due to its higher nickel content, the extraction process for saprolite ore is comparatively more efficient, utilizing smelting methods such as Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF).

However, saprolite deposits are located in deeper layers of the earth’s crust, which presents greater challenges in mining.

The primary product derived from saprolite ore is ferronickel&mdash;an alloy of iron and nickel&mdash;which is a key raw material in the production of stainless steel.

<h2>Limonite Nickel Ore

Limonite is generally classified as "low-grade nickel ore," with nickel content ranging from 0.8% to 1.5%. However, limonite ore also offers distinct advantages due to its cobalt content, which typically ranges between 0.1% and 0.2%.

Processing limonite requires more advanced technologies, such as High-Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL)&mdash;a method that involves leaching the ore with heated sulfuric acid to extract valuable metals.

The result is Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), a solid mixture of nickel and cobalt, which can be further refined into nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate for use in various industries, including battery manufacturing.

<h2>Nickel Ore Processing at Harita Nickel
</h2>
Harita Nickel is not only engaged in nickel ore mining but also the integrated processing of ore into value-added products. All operations are conducted on Obi Island, located in South Halmahera Regency.

As of August 2024, Harita Nickel’s latest refinery facility has been fully commissioned and is now operational, following the completion of the company’s RKEF smelting facilities in 2023.

Today, Harita Nickel operates a total of 12 RKEF production lines, with a combined capacity of 120,000 tons of contained nickel in ferronickel, alongside 6 HPAL production lines, with an equivalent capacity of 120,000 tons of contained nickel in MHP.

The company secured recognition in the Owned Media – Internal Magazine Subcategory, competing against 581 entries from 209 institutions.
This award underscores Harita Nickel’s commitment to providing informative and inspiring communication platforms for all stakeholders. The Harita Nickel Internal Magazine serves as a key platform for delivering corporate updates, showcasing initiatives, and encouraging creativity among employees.

"This recognition reflects Harita Nickel’s commitment to transparency and effective communication with employees and stakeholders. Through our Internal Magazine, we highlight various initiatives and achievements in operations, sustainability, and workplace safety&mdash;our top priorities," said Ekhel Chandra Wijaya, Harita Nickel’s Public and Internal Affairs (PIA) Manager.

The award was given for Harita Nickel Magazine Edition III – 2024, themed “Sustainable Downstreaming on Obi Island”, coinciding with the 79th Mining and Energy Day. This edition highlights Harita Nickel’s key achievements, including four awards from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, as well as advancements in operational innovation, workplace safety, and environmental initiatives.

Beyond corporate achievements, Harita Nickel remains dedicated to empowering local communities on Obi Island through various programs. These include the launch of Propala products, which support Kawasi women entrepreneurs, and the Youth Forum: Harita Future Leaders program. One of the featured speakers in this session was Anita Gathmir, founder of Puta Dino Kayangan, a North Maluku-based SME focused on reviving and preserving the Tidore traditional weaving tradition, which had been extinct for 100 years.

Harita Nickel’s Internal Magazine Wins PR Indonesia Award

Working in mining was a dream of Alan Darmawan, singer of the song “100 Million,” which is already so familiar to Insan Harita. Even before his fame, he thought that working in a mine meant that a person could have a good life.&nbsp;
"In North Maluku, only those who work in the mines can own expensive items. For example, if we want to get married, the dowry is 100 million. it can only be achieved by those who work in the mines," said Alan Darmawan, during his visit as a guest star of Loji Soundfest 2024, organized by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, on New Year's Eve.

To realize his young dream, Alan had sent job applications to several mining companies. One of his targets was Harita Nickel, an integrated nickel mining and processing technology company operating in Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. Unfortunately, Alan's dream of working in mining was not to be and fate took him to another profession.

"I heard stories that the mine in Obi has excellent facilities. It's different from other mines in North Maluku," he said, recalling why he wanted to work at Harita Nickel. "Now that I've experienced it firsthand, it aligns with the expectations of others. Here, employees get a comfortable mess and working environment. There are sports facilities and entertainment so that employees do not get bored at work, "Alan replied in his own words.&nbsp;

Yes, Alan did not end up working at the mine. He works at the harbor and port authority office in Ternate City. But who would have thought that his work had become an “obligatory song” for mine workers. Alan has received numerous invitations, including those from mining companies, since the song gained popularity on social media in early 2023.&nbsp;

"It turns out that the song relates to many people. Perhaps this is also what makes it viral," he said, adding that from the song, he was contacted by the boss of a mining company who thanked him because of Alan's song. The mine, which was sluggish at that time, had the spirit to rise again. Alan also received appreciation from a mining employee, who claimed to have successfully proposed to his girlfriend because he was motivated by the "100 Million" song.

"People here see mining as something great. Working in a mine is prestigious. Like we want to propose marriage to someone's daughter, working in a mine is already a special status," Alan reiterated.

Similarly, President Tidore, a rapper from the Tidore Islands, North Maluku, who has traveled the world, admitted that he was tempted to work in a mine. “If I hadn't participated in the 25-country exhibition at that time, I might have given my application documents to Harita,” he said, jokingly recalling his regular public transportation driver every time he returned home. “Just now, I met them. I asked them what they do here, and they said they drive vehicles,” he continued, admitting that he was happy to hear that people from his hometown enjoyed working at Harita Nickel.

While Alan's songs are about the dream of being a mineworker with a good life, the lyrics of President Tidore's songs are filled with religious values and social criticism. Despite being known to be critical, this Tidore artist, who has lived in Yogyakarta for a long time, has a positive impression of mining as an asset for regional development.

"Actually, mining is not a new thing, since the sultanate era, there have been mines. As long as it is managed properly, environmental sustainability is maintained, and the community can live more prosperously, the presence of the mine is beneficial," said President Tidore, whose real name is Sadam Abdul Aziz, hoping that Harita Nickel can continue to consistently carry out mining and downstream operations in a sustainable manner.

Closing his visit, Alan Darmawan and President Tidore, who once dreamed of being a mineworker, admitted that they were happy and satisfied to be able to perform in front of Harita employees, especially after both of them could see for themselves and hear firsthand the recognition of Harita employees, who are primarily local residents of North Maluku, getting a comfortable working environment and better welfare.

Dreamed of Being a Mineworker, Alan Darmawan and President Tidore Name Harita Nickel as Ideal Workplace

Harita Nickel continues to innovate to provide the best services for its employees. To meet their needs, this sustainable integrated nickel processing company operating on Obi Island has launched another Foodmart shopping center at its worksite. Impressively, this retail facility is now the largest shopping center in any mining area in Indonesia.
Located within the residential area of PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) employees, the Foodmart covers approximately 1,500 square meters. It offers a wide variety of products, including fresh vegetables and fruits, freshly baked bread, snacks, cooking ingredients, kitchenware, and other daily necessities, all aimed at enhancing the quality of life for Harita Nickel employees while working on-site.

Deputy Head of Technical Support, Amiruddin, representing the management of Harita Nickel's business units HJF, PT Karunia Permai Sentosa (KPS), and PT Obi Sinar Timur (OST), highlighted that this impressive second Foodmart building on Obi Island was constructed using repurposed shipping containers, reflecting the company's commitment to environmental sustainability.

"We want to prove that the spirit of environmental sustainability is embedded in Harita Nickel's mining operations by utilizing recycled materials such as used containers," Amiruddin added.

In his closing remarks, Amiruddin expressed his hope that the shopping center would also collaborate with the surrounding community, particularly Harita Nickel’s fostered micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), enabling them to market their products. He also urged the management team to ensure the continuity of the supply chain to consistently meet employees' needs.

Industrial Relations/Employee Relations Manager Harita Nickel, Taufik Setiaji, expressed his appreciation for the opening of the second Foodmart store at the Obi Island site.

“We are very grateful for the support from Foodmart management. With this shopping market, employees can experience a shopping experience similar to what they would find in a big city. We hope that this second Foodmart will provide excellent service by offering high-quality products,” Taufik stated.

Taufik also mentioned that the facility would soon feature a restaurant and coffee shop on the second floor, providing a new recreational spot for employees. He emphasized that these amenities are expected to bring added comfort to employees working long shifts of 10 to 12 hours per day in a remote area far from their families.

The grand opening of Foodmart HJF Obi was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the traditional cutting of tumpeng by attending management representatives. The ceremony concluded with the reading of a pledge by Foodmart employees to provide the best service possible. Following the opening, all employees were invited to enter and start shopping.

Christoforus Nanda Rahardian, a representative of Harita Nickel’s Industrial Relations/Employee Relations division, could not hide his excitement about the new facility.

“This Foodmart really helps us. It has a complete selection of goods at affordable prices. Shopping has now become more convenient and comfortable,” he shared enthusiastically.

Second Foodmart at Obi Site, The Largest in Indonesia’s Mining Area!

On the long journey to the Obi site, Bacan Island may not be the first destination that comes to mind for Harita Nickel employees. However, for Bahtiar, a member of the Environment Department of PT Dharma Cipta Mulia (DCM), one of Harita Nickel's business units operating on Obi Island, the journey back to the site was an opportunity to uncover one of the hidden treasures around their workplace.
“Before getting back to the Obi site, let's take a walk!” said Bahtiar excitedly, after a long and tiring journey from Pasuruan, East Java. With assignments lasting up to 10 weeks, many of Harita's people feel the need to refresh their minds and bodies before returning to their work routines. And that was the reason behind Bahtiar's invitation to explore Sibela Beach.

The beach, located 18 kilometers from the center of Labuha City, is known for its stunning natural beauty. The soft white sand stretches out, as if inviting anyone to walk barefoot and feel the warm touch of sand grains on the soles of their feet. The calm waves caress the beach, providing a natural rhythm that soothes the soul. The sea water is clear blue, so clear that the bottom is clearly visible, reflecting the glittering sunlight like a jewel in the middle of the ocean.
 
While the sun shines, the coastal panorama offers more than just visual beauty. From the jetty, the hills of Bacan Island are silhouetted against the bright tosca green sea - a sight rarely seen in urban areas.
 
“This beach is like a hidden gem for us,” says Bahtiar, gazing at the beauty unfolding before them. “Here, we can do snorkeling and enjoy the amazing colors of the coral reefs under the sea.”
 
As the clock strikes noon, my stomach begins to cry out for attention. Sibela Beach offers not only natural beauty, but also appetizing local cuisine. The food menu here is relatively affordable, ranging from fried bananas, grilled fish, to young coconut ice that is perfect for quenching thirst.

“I think we've found more than just a transit point today,” Bahtiar said in a soft tone, looking at his fellow travelers. They smiled as they gazed at the sandy expanse of Sibela Beach. “It's really beautiful. I feel like I want to stay here for a long time and I'm too lazy to go back to Obi,” said one of Bahtiar's friends, which was greeted with laughter from all of them.
 
Their moment together at Sibela Beach was a memorable one. With hearts full of beautiful memories, they returned to Labuha with plans to share their experience with other Insan Harita. Sibela Beach is not just a hidden beach on Bacan Island, but a favorite destination for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty.
 
However, Bahtiar also reminded the importance of preserving the environment. “We must remember to maintain the beauty of this beach environment by not littering, especially into the sea,” he said. As American environmental researcher John Muir said: take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time.

The Beauty of Sibela Beach, a Hidden Paradise on Bacan Island

PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP) once again hosted its annual carnival in celebration of Indonesia's 79th Independence Day. Themed “A New Nusantara, A Progressive Indonesia”, the third installment of this highly anticipated event delivered an even more vibrant and colorful spectacle than previous years.
The event took place on Sunday morning, September 1, 2024, at the football field within the TBP office and residential area in Nirwana. A total of 17 teams, representing various departments and contractors, showcased their creativity through artistic performances, complemented by costumes and ornaments that highlighted the unique cultural identity of Indonesia's diverse regions.

The carnival parade commenced at the football field, where each team performed in front of the panel of judges. The Preparations & Lab Department opened the event with a stunning display inspired by traditional wayang (shadow puppetry). The Plant Department concluded the performances with a captivating narrative on the spirit of post-independence struggles and nation-building.

Following a thorough evaluation, the judges awarded the Production Department first place for their compelling presentation of traditional dances from multiple regions, complete with authentic costumes. The HRGA Department secured second place with their intricate Ogoh-ogoh statue, an iconic element of Balinese culture, while the Management Team earned third place with a tribute to Javanese artistry.

Ayrthon Christovallen Blasius Mongan, a member of the Production Department's winning team, shared his excitement about the victory. “We showcased dances from various regions with costumes that truly embodied their cultural significance. Preparations included daily practice sessions after work and collaborative efforts to acquire the costumes, some of which were specially ordered or brought by colleagues returning from leave,” he explained.

Younsel Evand Roos, Operational Director of PT TBP, who also participated in the Management Team's presentation, emphasized the importance of such events in fostering camaraderie and cultural preservation. “This annual carnival is not just a creative outlet; it also strengthens team spirit and highlights the rich cultural tapestry of Indonesia,” he remarked.

The TBP Carnival 2024 served as the grand finale to the series of events commemorating Indonesia’s Independence Day, organized by PT TBP and PT Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS), a subsidiary of Harita Nickel. Leading up to the carnival, employees participated in a variety of competitions, including sports such as badminton, futsal, and sepak takraw, as well as artistic events like dance battles and the highly anticipated TBP Idol singing competition.

This year’s carnival successfully combined the celebration of Indonesian cultural heritage with a platform for employee creativity and engagement, reaffirming the company's commitment to fostering unity and cultural appreciation within its workforce.

On Monday morning, June 17, 2024&mdash;the second day of Eid al-Adha 1445 H&mdash;dozens of residents gathered in front of the Al-Jami’ Mosque in Soligi Village, a community located near Harita Nickel's operations on Obi Island. They had come together to witness the special ritual of animal sacrifice carried out through a unique, time-honored tradition.
The two goats selected for the sacrifice were first fed the finest grass and fresh leaves. Once they had eaten their fill, the goats were bathed and sprayed with perfume. Next, they were dressed with clothes on their bodies and turbans on their heads. With these preparations, the goats looked neat and fragrant.

“This special treatment symbolizes the love Prophet Ibrahim had for his son, Prophet Ismail,” said Ishak, the imam leading the ritual, as he explained the meaning behind the tradition.

Next, the two pampered goats were paraded around the mosque three times. The villagers, including children, watched solemnly as they participated in the procession.

After this display of care, the goats were ready for the sacrifice. Ishak led the slaughter with great precision. The animals' eyes were covered with burial cloths, and the slaughterer held his breath throughout the procedure to ensure the ritual was performed respectfully.

Following the sacrifice, the imam and the villagers sat on mats and recited prayers until the goats had fully passed. This sacred moment deeply touched everyone present, as the air was filled with reverence.

“This is how our ancestors carried out the tradition, and we continue to uphold it as long as it remains in accordance with religious norms,” Ishak explained.

Once the ritual was complete, the villagers worked together to process the meat, preparing various dishes to be shared among all.

However, the Eid al-Adha celebrations did not end there. In the evening, the villagers gathered once again for a Ngibi performance in the village square. Representatives from Harita Nickel were also present to enjoy the event.

Ngibi is a traditional art form of the Buton tribe, the majority ethnic group in Soligi. The dance is performed in pairs, accompanied by the sounds of a gong and drum, with no lyrics. Female dancers perform the Cungka Dance, followed by the male dancers performing the Ngibi Dance. A significant aspect of the Ngibi Dance is that male dancers are prohibited from touching the female dancers as a sign of respect.

This year's festivities were further enhanced with a pencak silat competition, involving students from elementary through high school. The village head, Madiasi La Siriali, explained that this inclusion of younger generations helps connect them with the traditions of their ancestors.

“We are grateful to Harita Nickel for supporting us in preserving our traditions and helping to pass them down to the next generation,” Madiasi said, acknowledging the company's involvement.

The evening in Soligi was filled with joy as both the villagers and Harita Nickel representatives shared in the warmth and camaraderie of the celebration. More than just the sacrifice, Eid al-Adha in Soligi represents a time for strengthening the bonds of community and deepening the relationship between residents and the company.

Harita Nickel held the Harita Goes to Campus (HGTC) program at the Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) "Veteran" Yogyakarta on Friday, September 27, 2024. In collaboration with the Faculty of Mineral Technology (FTM) and the Student Chapter of the Indonesian Economic Geology Society (MGEI), the event took place in the FTM Seminar Room to help students gain a deeper understanding of the mining industry. This event is essential for preparing them to face current global challenges.
Under the theme "Synergy: Pioneering Innovation, Sustainability, and Environmental Excellence in Harmony," this session blended education with environmental awareness. The event featured more than just lectures; it included creative competitions in essay writing, poster design, and video production. These activities encouraged students to explore the mining industry and its future role in sustainability. As participants engaged in discussions about innovation and ecological responsibility, the atmosphere was charged with the excitement of a new generation ready to rethink mining in Indonesia.

Harita Nickel presented four speakers: Director of Health, Safety, and Environment Tonny H. Gultom; Head of Exploration and Mine Development Robby Rafianto; Climate Change Senior Specialist Muhammad Iqbal; and Community Affairs Superintendent Muhammad Yuda Pranata.&nbsp;

In his presentation, Tonny highlighted Indonesia's strategic position on the global stage as a key player in the nickel industry, particularly regarding the implementation of clean energy. “Global demand for critical minerals is expected to surge in the next two decades as the world strives to achieve net-zero targets. Overall demand is even predicted to increase by up to six times,” Tonny stated, emphasizing nickel's central role in the transition to environmentally friendly technology and a more sustainable future.

The event was warmly welcomed by students from various faculties, including Mineral Technology, Economics and Business, Agriculture, Industrial Engineering, and Social and Political Sciences. Even high school students and students from other universities attended to deepen their understanding of the nickel industry and sustainability values. The Vice Rector of UPN, Dr. Ir. Sutarto, M.T., and the Dean of the Faculty of Mineral Technology, Dr. Ir. RM. Basuki Rahmad, M.T., were also present at the event.

Sutarto emphasized the importance of the knowledge and experience shared in this seminar, especially for students as Indonesia’s future golden generation (Generasi Emas Indonesia 2045). “The success of this vision depends on you as the frontline,” he said.

This seminar session attracted 146 participants who were inspired by discussions about the future of nickel and technological innovation in Indonesia. In addition to addressing technical aspects, participants were invited to understand Harita Nickel's role in protecting the environment and empowering local communities through sustainable initiatives.

Princiska Adelia Shanita, a 2021 Geophysical Engineering student, expressed her satisfaction with the material presented. “There were many interesting topics discussed, especially regarding how Harita Nickel manages the environment well and empowers communities. I hope Harita Nickel continues to innovate to support Indonesia Gold 2045,” she said.

Harita Goes to Campus: Embracing a Sustainable Future at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta

The 2024 Regional Head Election (Pilkada) was held simultaneously on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. This national event was also held in the operational area of Harita Nickel site Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku.&nbsp;
Thousands of Harita employees seemed enthusiastic to visit a special polling station (TPS) within the company area. A total of 10 polling stations are provided to accommodate the voting rights of local employees, North Maluku residents, with a total of about 5600 people.&nbsp;

Industrial Relations Manager of Harita Nickel, Taufik Setiaji, said the company provides an opportunity for employees to use their voting rights on the day of the election according to the data of the Permanent Voters List (DPT) of the General Election Commission (KPU) of South Halmahera Regency.&nbsp;

“Employees who have been registered in the DPT may present an invitation letter from the KPU to the KPPS officer. As for employees whose polling stations are located outside the company area, they are given permission to leave the work site to vote,” he said.

In accordance with the provisions of KPU, voters who have South Halmahera Regency ID cards are entitled to get ballots to elect candidates for Governor and Deputy Governor and candidates for Regent and Deputy Regent. Meanwhile, those who come from outside the South Halmahera region but are still in North Maluku Province, only get ballots for the Governor and Deputy Governor elections.

Taufik further explained, in its implementation, employees were also involved as officers at polling stations consisting of the Voting Organizing Group (KPPS) and TPS Supervisors. Prior to that, they had received technical guidance from the election organizing agency, in this case the KPU and the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) of South Halmahera Regency.&nbsp;

From on-site monitoring, voting took place starting at 07.00 WIT until 13.00 WIT. Then proceed with the vote counting witnessed by witnesses from each candidate pair. After the counting was completed, the polling station officers and witnesses signed the minutes. Furthermore, the ballots were put back into the ballot box to be distributed back to the KPU.
