Jakarta, April 15, 2025 – PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (NCKL), also known as Harita Nickel, an integrated and sustainable nickel mining and processing company, has voluntarily submitted itself to undergo an audit process conducted by one of the world’s most rigorous independent assurance organizations, the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA). The audit, which began in October last year, is entering its second phase in April 2025. This marks the first time an integrated nickel mining and processing company in Asia has undertaken the IRMA audit process.
The IRMA-approved independent auditor in Indonesia, SCS Global Services (SCS), will assess whether the company, which operates in South Halmahera, North Maluku, has respected human rights, engaged with local communities, provided a safe, healthy, and supportive work environment, minimized environmental impacts, and contributed to a positive legacy. In total, more than 400 requirements under the IRMA Standard will be evaluated throughout the audit process. The assessment results will be published in a public audit report, released both locally and on the IRMA website.
“By volunteering to have its mining operations independently audited against the world’s most rigorous global mining standard, Harita Nickel is setting an unprecedented example of operational transparency in Indonesia’s mining sector," said Aimee Boulanger, Executive Director of IRMA, in a press release issued when Harita Nickel initiated the audit process.
The spirit of aligning national industry practices with global standards, as demonstrated by Harita Nickel, not only ensures long-term benefits for communities and the environment but also reflects the growing recognition of Indonesia’s nickel industry as being in line with the highest global compliance standards. This alignment is particularly important given nickel’s critical role in supporting the energy transition and the increasing global demand for responsibly sourced nickel.
Harita Nickel’s Director of Health, Safety and Environment, Tonny Gultom, stated, “This transparency demonstrates the Company’s commitment to implementing responsible and sustainable mining practices while also supporting the Indonesian government’s vision for a mining sector that is both environmentally and socially responsible and transparent.”
Since its inception, Harita Nickel has demonstrated a strong spirit of continuous improvement; using assurances and due diligence reports as some of the tools to identify areas for improvement where the company will take a phased approach towards improvement. Harita Nickel has also consistently aligned itself with globally recognized sustainability standards to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen stakeholder trust.
Before commencing its mining operations, Harita Nickel obtained a range of academic studies that serve as the foundation for its responsible operational practices. Among these are hydrological assessments and land-use planning studies, which form the basis for a comprehensive water management strategy—covering the responsible use, recycling, and distribution of water across all operational areas.
As the processing and refining of nickel ore intensifies, Harita Nickel’s environmental management practices have also evolved to meet higher standards. The Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF) has been implemented in former mining excavation areas, complete with a comprehensive water management system and testing procedures that significantly enhance tailings management safety and prevent water contamination risks.
Harita Nickel implements marine environmental management to monitor and protect marine ecosystems around the company’s activities. Management includes water quality, plankton, benthos, fish and coral as well as other indicators of marine environmental health.
Further, Tonny elaborated, "We have also initiated a landscape-based natural risk assessment in line with the recommendations of the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), to better understand and mitigate hydrological and ecological risks."
Commitment to international standards such as IRMA is not the only one adopted by Harita Nickel. The company has also initiated a compliance assessment process for responsible sourcing practices through the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP) from the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI).
"The compliance status obtained from this audit confirms that Harita Nickel's risk management system has been implemented in accordance with applicable standards. The company will also release its 2024 Sustainability Report in early May, which highlights its performance and elaborates on priorities for improvement in the areas of environment, social, and governance (ESG) moving forward,” concluded Tonny in his press statement.
Further information regarding ESG integration across the value chain can be found on our website.

About Harita Nickel

PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (NCKL) or Harita Nickel is part of the Harita Group, which operates sustainable integrated nickel mining and processing on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. In addition to its Mining Business License (IUP), the company has been operating a saprolite nickel smelting plant since 2017 using Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology, and since 2021, it has also operated a limonite nickel processing and refining facility using High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) technology in the same operational area. Both facilities were established to support the Indonesian government's downstream mandate.
Harita Nickel is a pioneer in Indonesia in processing and refining low-grade limonite nickel using HPAL technology. This technology allows the processing of previously unused limonite nickel into a strategically valuable product, Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP). Using the same technology, MHP as an intermediate product has successfully been processed into a final product, Nickel Sulfate (NiSO4), which is a key material in the production of cathodes for new energy sources, such as electric vehicle batteries.

IRMA Audit: Harita Nickel’s Affirmation of Its Commitment to Sustainability

SOUTH HALMAHERA, November 9, 2023 - PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (NCKL) or Harita Nickel, a sustainable integrated nickel mining and processing company, has once again taken a significant step in environmental protection by planting 500 mangrove seedlings in the coastal areas around Soligi Village, Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. The activity took place on Sunday, November 5, 2023, and was part of the celebration of the National Day of Love Flora and Fauna (HCPSN) 2023.
Bowo Budileksono, Deputy Head of HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) Site Operation at Harita Nickel, said that this program was a manifestation of the company's commitment to preserving the coastal environment. The strong roots of mangroves act as wave breakers, providing protection against coastal erosion and supporting a rich coastal ecosystem, including various species of birds, crabs, and other coastal wildlife. "This activity is also part of our support for the National Mangrove Rehabilitation Program, which we have been implementing since 2021," he added.
In implementing this program, Harita Nickel is not only planting seedlings but also conducting regular maintenance and monitoring. The company has been working with the Soligi village government and has empowered the local community to participate in this conservation effort. The event was also attended by the village secretary, the head of the village advisory body (BPD), and the mangrove conservation group led by Harita Nickel and Unkhair University in Ternate.
Rusman Baharudin, Head of Spatial Planning Affairs of Soligi Village, expressed his appreciation for Harita Nickel's consistency in demonstrating concern for the coastal environment of Soligi Village. "I hope that the company's efforts will continue so that the mangrove ecosystem in Soligi Village can be preserved and enjoyed by future generations," said Rusman.
This program was initially launched in Soligi Village in 2021 and expanded to three other locations in 2022, including Awanggoa and Belang-Belang villages in Bacan District and Guruapin Village in Kayoa District. This activity is a continuation of the company's previous efforts, which have already planted more than 47,000 mangrove seedlings. From 2021 to date, the total planting and rehabilitation of mangrove seedlings has reached more than 23 hectares.

Kemenko Marves Appreciates Harita Nickel's Consistency in Mangrove Rehabilitation, Preserving South Halmahera's Coastline

Harita Nickel again held Obi Fishing Tournament 2023 in Kawasi Waters, Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. The second tournament held to promote biodiversity in Obi's waters was even more spectacular.
For instance, while last year's inaugural tournament was only attended by Kawasi villagers, this year's tournament was also participated by residents of its neighboring village, Soligi. A total of 193 participants from the two villages participated in the event titled "Pesona Mangael Ikang di Obi" which lasted for two days, on March 18-19, 2023.
In addition to involving more participants, the second tournament's fish catch was much heavier. The first winner was a Giant Trevally or Bobara as the locals named it, weighing 23.51 kg. In second and third position were Geropa fish weighing 15.91 kg and 15.13 kg respectively.
Committee Chairman of Obi Fishing Tournament 2023, Apolinavis F Mbata said the annual event is organized by Harita Nickel as a means of education as well as promoting biodiversity of Obi waters located around the operational site of the nickel mining and downstream company.
"With the fish catch in this year's tournament, which is more abundant, may boost up our enthusiasm and love to keep preserving the Kawasi sea," he said, during the peak of the winner announcement and prize-giving ceremony which took place on Kawasi beach, Sunday (19/2/2023).
Furthermore, it is hoped that this activity can strengthen community togetherness in the surrounding mining village with the company, which has been harmonious so far. The tournament concluded with awarding of trophies and cash prizes worth a total of IDR 44 million to six champions. This amount does not include prizes that were also given to winners of quizzes at the venue and on social media.

Kawasi Waters Still Abundant in Fish
Saidi Jouronga (58), a resident of Kawasi Village and winner of the first Obi Fishing Tournament 2023, recognized the abundance of fish in Kawasi waters.

Saidi Jouronga peraih Juara I Obi Fishing Tournament 2023, dengan hasil tangkapan ikan Bobara seberat 23,51 kg

Saidi admits that he is still pursuing his profession as a fisherman. He goes to sea every day from 6 am and returns home in the evening. His average catch is between 20 to 30 kg. As an illustration, its price in the local village is between Rp40,000 to Rp50,000 per kilogram.
He added that when he participated in the tournament, the grandfather of 9 grandchildren went out after maghrib and at 11 pm had submitted the fish catch which was determined by the committee as the first winner. This means that he fished for only about 3 hours. And even then, he said, it was less than 2 kilometers from the shoreline. "So if anyone says there are no fish in the Kawasi sea, or even if there are fish, they don't want to eat them because the water is dirty, that's a big lie. I was born in Kawasi, and I fish here every day until now, so I know it well," he explains.

In line with Saidi, Hut Ibrahim (60), a local resident who also works as a fisherman, admitted that he is still fishing in the waters of Kawasi. Like Saidi, Ibrahim fishes using traditional equipment such as fishing rods. His catches are mostly Bobara, Grouper, Red Snapper, and squid. "We don't go to sea if the weather is not good, such as high waves. If the weather is good, we will definitely go to sea because it is for our daily needs and children's schooling," explained the second winner of the tournament.

The father of 6 children said he was happy with the tournament held by Harita Nickel. Cash amounting to Rp10 million prize as champion II, according to him will be used for school fees for his youngest child who is still in high school.

Obi Waters's Productivity Remains Conserved
Many studies have revealed the biodiversity of Obi Island's waters. These waters are home to natural coral reefs that serve as a breeding ground for a variety of marine life. These waters also have high fisheries productivity, characterized by many variants of fish both basic fish (demersal) and surface fish (pelagic).
Prof. Dr. Ir. Inneke F. M. Rumengan, M.Sc, Head of Research and Community Service Institute of Sam Ratulangi University (Unsrat) said the waters around Obi Island have abundant fisheries productivity. Based on her research, various types of pelagic fish from small to large size and demersal fish were found.
"This is supported by our data in terms of plankton that we observe from year to year. The abundance and biological index show that the waters are quite productive. And the plankton feeds the fish," she explained.
She said that fisheries productivity in Obi waters is well maintained. Based on her research conducted from 2015 to 2021, it was found that there was an increasing trend both in terms of number and type.
"Our team observed directly by diving to observe the types of fish that are there. Categorizing indicator fish, carnivores, herbivores. Year after year, the trend is relatively the same. Referring to coral reef fish, there tends to be a slight increase in both numbers and types in 2020-2021," Prof. Inneke explained.
For information, the research conducted by Prof. Inneke and her team from Unsrat was related to ecological conditions in the waters of Obi Island. This includes the water around Kawasi which is on the west of Obi Island.
"For the western Obi Island area, fishermen are observed mostly for their own consumption. Even if there is excess, it is sold to local buyers and not sold outside the region. The number of fishermen has also decreased because some have worked in companies there," she said.

Participants hand over their fish catch to the committee

Harita Nickel has made a number of sustainable environmental management efforts to maintain productivity as well as prevent disruption of the marine ecosystem on Obi Island.
Director of Health, Safety, and Enviromental PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (PT TBP), Tonny H. Gultom said the efforts made include regulating activities at the port such as provisions for ships not to dispose of waste in the Obi water area, releasing ballast water from ships in waters far from the port, and placing anchors in designated areas.
"This program aims to ensure environmental management is carried out in accordance with regulations and works with the best performance," Tonny said.
In addition, several marine monitoring programs are carried out which include monitoring seawater quality (physical and chemical parameters), marine sediment quality, and marine biota (plankton, benthos, coral reefs, and reef fish). This program implementation is supported by sea monitoring vehicles and equipped with well-tested technology.
Meanwhile, the Director of External Relations of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (PT TBP), Stevi Thomas, said the company continues to prioritize best practices in performing its operations that cover various aspects responsibly and sustainably.
" We have seen from this second tournament that good quality fishes are still widely available in the Kawasi waters. This is not only for tournament needs but also for daily consumption. Let's protect this sea together to ensure that it remains a source of livelihood for many people," said Stevi.
For information, the Obi Fishing Tournament 2023 kicked off on Saturday (18/3/2023) afternoon in Kawasi Village. The tournament itself started at 17.00 WIT and ended with the weighing of the catches at around 10.00 am WIT.
In the opening and closing events, various arts and entertainment were also performed by local children presenting traditional dances. The event was made more lively by two hilarious hosts from Ternate, Tete Ko, and Saya Khoko.
