We should be proud that Indonesian integrated downstream operated by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada, also known as Harita Nickel, has drawn attention from the world's mining industry players. They are curious about the massive development of nickel downstream in Indonesia. And Harita Nickel is the first company in Indonesia that has successfully processed low-grade nickel into electric vehicle battery materials.
This was revealed at the 26th World Mining Congress (WMC) held in Brisbane City, Australia on June 26-29, 2023. This 2-3 annual event, which has been organized for more than 60 years, was attended by mining experts and corporations from various countries. This year's congress theme is Resourcing Tomorrow, Creating Value for Society.

Harita Nickel's presence in the forum as part of delegation of the Indonesian Mining Experts Association (Perhapi) to introduce Indonesian mining to international world.
HSE Director of Harita Nickel, Tonny H Gultom, as one of the speakers in a panel discussion session explained his research on Mixed Hydroxide Presipitate (MHP) products that have been produced by Harita Nickel which can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector.
According to Tonny, the most common questions asked by congress participants were related to developments in the nickel downstream industry and utilization of other minerals contained in nickel including its development plan. 
"So many of them were curious about the rapid development of nickel downstream industry in Indonesia, and especially for Harita Nickel because it has successfully produced nickel derivative products up to Nickel Sulfate and the next Cobalt Sulfate," Tonny said.
From the presentation and discussion room, switch to the Exhibition Hall. There were dozens of booths from various delegations. One of them was Perhapi, where Harita Nickel joined in. Apparently this booth was no less exciting. Again, the downstreaming of nickel became the most asked topic by visitors.

Tonny explained how the company, which initially only mined nickel, has now succeeded in building an integrated downstream. Where all operations from upstream to downstream are in one area, namely the Obi Industrial Estate. According to him, the concept of vertically integrated mining has many advantages.
Furthermore, the member of Perhapi's expert council said that integrated concepts also provide easy access to export processes. With this facility, products to be exported can be done directly through special terminal access that has obtained government permission.
"Because the mining site and the downstream industry of PT TBP Tbk has a special terminal which of course has received permission from the Government, the Customs and Excise officers at the location can do a direct calculation of the export value and tax calculation," Tonny added.
PT TBP Tbk's integrated mining also allows savings from the financing aspect, namely hauling and freighting costs. You can imagine, refineries or smelters that do not have ore supply around the factory, they have to bear the high cost of the transportation process which is quite large. 
"With this integrated concept, in addition to providing certainty of nickel ore supply, it is also able to save transportation costs and minimize the carbon footprint left behind," said Tonny, that the integrated concept also contributes to reducing environmental impacts.
In the international congress, there were also a number of discussions on mining derivative products, especially nickel, in a sustainable supply chain value.&nbsp;

For example, the incident of the Todoku river overflowing into the residential area of Kawasi Village on Friday, June 16, 2023, which was widely circulated on social media and reported by several online media outlets. From the circulating information, Harita Nickel, the owner of the Mining Business License (IUP) through PT Trimegah Bangun Perada (PT TBP), the source of Todoku river, was accused of being the cause of the flood in Kawasi Village.

Is that information true? Let's find out from competent sources who know the situation on the ground exactly.

The Head of Mining Engineering at PT TBP, Primus Priyanto, provided an explanation regarding the matter. According to him, the overflow of water from the Todoku river into the residential area was not caused by mining activities but rather due to high rainfall.

This explanation is supported by data from rainfall monitoring at five observation stations prepared by the company. The data shows that the rainfall during the incident on Friday (6/16/2023) exceeded 100 mm per day, classified as very heavy rainfall. There was even one point that reached 182 mm per day, which falls under the category of extreme rainfall.

The water overflowed into a small portion of the residential area with a height of 40 cm, which ironically was reported as a flash flood, originating from three points of the Todoku river.&nbsp;These points include the Elang Bridge, where no embankment was built due to it being used as an access point for residents, and the Merah Bridge. The high rainfall caused an increase in water discharge in the Todoku river, resulting in overflow at these three points.
Regarding the reported breach in the embankment, the company has indeed constructed embankments along the Todoku river, located behind the residential area.&nbsp;All of these embankments are in good condition. However, at the point where the overflow occurred, no embankment was built as it is used as an access route for residents.
So it can be affirmed that the company had undertaken mitigation efforts before the incident on June 16, 2023, occurred. Besides constructing embankments, the company has also created sedimentation ponds and widened the Todoku river, which originally had a width of 5-7 meters, to 17-20 meters.
"After the incident, we didn't remain idle. As of now, the temporary repair of the Elang Bridge has been completed. Next, we will proceed with the permanent repair of the bridge and the widening of the Todoku river watershed," he explained.

The company will also widen the Buaya Bridge, which leads to the mouth of the Todoku river. With the bridge repairs and the widening of the Todoku river watershed, it is hoped that similar incidents can be anticipated and prevented.
It can also be mentioned that the water inundation of up to 40 cm in a small portion of the residential area did not last long. The next day, on Saturday morning (17/6/2023), after the water overflowed into the settlement the previous afternoon, the residents' activities returned to normal.
By the way, concerning the overflow of the Todoku river into the village settlement in Kawasi, it turns out that it is not the first time it has occurred. According to the Head of Kawasi Village, Arifin Saroa, floods have occurred several times, even before the company's activities. The cause is the high rainfall from higher grounds to the residential area, which is at a lower contour surface.

The activity, led by the Internal Communication team in the Corporate Communication department in collaboration with HR and GA in each business unit of Harita Nickel, is intended to provide a closer introduction to the Insan Harita (Harita's People) about the entire operational process of the company they work for.
The rapid development of the company with its expanding production lines downstream poses both opportunities and challenges. One of them is how to unite the spirits of employees, who currently number nearly 14,000 and are spread across several business units operating in Site Obi, into one cohesive unit of Harita Nickel.

To address this challenge, Extra Miles Day (EMD) is organized. The activity is held on the employees' day off to avoid disrupting the company's operational activities. On the other hand, participating in this activity on their day off requires effort and sacrifice. But it is all worthwhile for the experience gained.

Currently, the EMD activity has been carried out up to the second batch, which took place on June 25, 2023. The second batch was attended by 18 selected participants. When combined with Batch 1, the total number of EMD alumni currently amounts to 30 individuals.

<h2>What excitement and experiences did the participants gain?</h2>
Meida&nbsp;Fikiyawati admitted to gaining new knowledge after participating in the EMD activity. As an employee of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) who is involved in daily Grade Control mining activities, she became aware of the process of nickel processing, from the nickel mined by TBP to the production of the final ferronickel product at PT Halmahera Jaya Ferronikel (HJF). She also learned about the operations of the HPAL plant operated by PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), which now produces Nickel Sulfate downstream and will soon be followed by Cobalt Sulfate. Muhammad Taufik, an employee of PT HPL who works in the Plant department, had a different experience. From this activity, he gained insights into the company's efforts to restore mined land through reclamation activities, aiming to bring back greenery. Additionally, he learned about the conservation of endemic wildlife on Obi Island to prevent their extinction.
Fajri Muliawan, a Laboratory Staff&nbsp;at Harita Clinic,&nbsp;mentioned that he is happy&nbsp;being able to witness firsthand the new settlement in Kawasi Village that the company had prepared to support the government's program. According to him, the new settlement is more organized and suitable for living.
"What's even more important is that through this activity, we can get to know friends from other business units. It's fun and we have more friends. They learned about mining activities, post-mining reclamation, nickel processing and refining in the plants, as well as waste management. Extra Miles Day: Introducing the Operations of Harita Nickel from Upstream to Downstream

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management system is essential for sustainable mining operations. Implementing a leading OHS management system will not only provide a guarantee of protection for workers, but also enhance productivity and competitiveness of the company.
PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP), a Harita Group business unit engaged in nickel mining and downstream industries, recently received ISO 45001:2018 certificate from the world-class ISO inspection, verification and certification service provider, SGS.
Primus Priyanto as Head of Mine Technical PT TBP accompanied by Stefanus Bram Prasetyo Adi, Superintendent OHS & Training, said the ISO 45001: 2018 certificate is the first international standard in the world that sets requirements or guidelines for implementation of the OHS management system.

PT TBP received the ISO certificate for implementing the OHS management system properly, by taking proportional actions in preventing work accidents and maintaining health in the workplace.
He further said that this certificate will raise the company's value and competitiveness to the public. A sustainable business will be considered when it is able to provide added value to related stakeholders by practicing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles.
<blockquote>"When people are looking to buy our products, they will find out whether our products ignore the safety of our employees and the environment or not. We answer that with the certificate. It is ISO standard that has been recognized internationally. And this will certainly add value to the company," stated Primus Priyanto, providing an illustration to explain the urgency of the ISO 45001:2018 certificate.</blockquote>
He continued, there is a complex and rigorous process behind the ISO certificate. The stages include preparation, assistance, then assessment of all aspects ranging from policy, organizational planning, implementation to management review.
"The most important thing about the ISO is documents and its documentation. The documents are available, documentation of its implementation is also provided. What is the procedure, how is its implementation in the field. Documents will be reviewed, field visitation will be conducted, and the last is the management review," said Stefanus, explaining the audit process.
He believes that this achievement is due to the commitment and cooperation of all parties in the company. This includes top management, employees and contractors.
"So, OSH concerns all operational aspects at the site, which includes cross-departments down to the contractors. As for us in the OSH and Training department as advisors, who help develop the SOP, while all parties are the implementers," Stefanus explained.
For example, to ride a vehicle in the site area, employees must be equipped with a SIMPER. There are procedures and requirements to be followed in order to obtain a Simper. In this case, he explained, the OHS team develops an operational system of procedures (SOP) to be carried out by employees to ensure safety at the work site.

Primus further said that the OHS culture does not only apply to all employees but also to every visitor coming to the operational area.
As the company's commitment to achieve the zero fatality target, including reducing occupational injuries and diseases, he continues to socialize the importance of K3 culture to all employees, including conducting inspections and imposing sanctions for anyone who violates it.
"The ISO 45001: 2018 certificate we have obtained is a whip, so that the achievements we have made can be maintained, especially since all of this is for our collective interests," he concluded.
<h2>Maintaining Teamwork Cohesiveness</h2>
Ahead of the fasting month recently, an event titled "TBP Carnival Fun 2023" was held very lively in the Nirwana mess complex, where PT Trimegah Bangun Persada employees live at the Kawasi Site in Obi Island.
The event, which was held on the off week, was attended by at least 700 people consisting of PT TBP employees and also workers from a number of contractors on site. They were joined in 16 teams competing to showcase their creativity. Some wore costumes of puppet characters to those wearing superhero characters in movies.

Indeed, the employees who were struggling with their work routines every day, that morning all seemed to be mingling in excitement.
Rudal Triawan, Mining Safety Superintendent, who was appointed as the coordinator of the joint committee said the TBP Fun 2023 Carnival was held to build togetherness among all employees and including contractor workers.
In addition, it is also a gratitude for the company's recent achievement in obtaining the ISO 45001: 2018 certificate. This achievement, said Rudal, was thanks to teamwork from across departments and even contractors.

The Inside Story of How PT TBP Achieved ISO 45001 for OHS Management System

Harita Nickel's real contribution in supporting the Government of South Halmahera's development program, especially in the Obi sub-district, has gained trust and support from the concerned stakeholders.
It was raining that morning in Laiwui village, the capital of Obi District, South Halmahera Regency. However, hundreds of residents still seemed enthusiastic about participating in the handover ceremony as well as the inauguration of the Obi Sub-district office and sea ambulance donation, on Sunday (5/3/2023).
South Halmahera Regent H Usman Sidik expressed his gratitude to Harita Nickel for assisting in constructing the Obi Sub-district office and providing a sea ambulance for the local community.
"Obi Sub-district Office is arguably the most luxurious sub-district office in South Halmahera, even in North Maluku. For that, on behalf of the South Halmahera Regency Government and the community, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Harita. This is very extraordinary, all community concerns are always supported by Harita Nickel," Usman said, applauded by the audience.
After being inaugurated, Regent Usman said he would often come to Obi District. The Regent will even make the Obi Sub-district office his second office during his visit to the oldest sub-district on Obi Island. Yes, on the 2nd floor of the new Obi District office building, there is a special room to be used as the workspace of the South Halmahera Regent.
"Harita is amazing, today we are able to see the sub-district office. Harita even had the idea to add a sea ambulance. This is because so far, people who want to give birth, arrive in the middle of the sea, and die when they get to Labuha," he continued.
The Regent further revealed that Harita Nickel's contribution to development in the region was not only given once. He said the company has also been assisting the community's basic needs in Obi Subdistrict which can now benefit from 24-hour electricity.
The company, through its Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) program, has assisted various community enterprises. In agriculture, for example, the company assists farmer groups with seeds, and fertilizers, including maintenance patterns. This is expected to increase rice crop yields. He said these efforts have helped the local government anticipate global economic conditions.
Harita Nickel's commitment to supporting the local government's development program has been demonstrated by real contributions and its impact has been widely perceived by the community. According to the Regent, this has made people's attitudes more enthusiastic in welcoming the company's activities.
"Once again, everything Harita has done is amazing. I am not flattering, but this is the reality. For example, this sub-district office and sea ambulance are the evidence. Meanwhile, Director of External Relations of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (PT TBP), Stevi Thomas stated that the construction of the Obi Sub-district office by Harita Nickel is one manifestation of the company's support for the South Halmahera Regency Government in order to improve services to local communities. 
" We hope that with the operation of this Obi Sub-District Office, it can support the government in terms of providing administrative services to the local people," said Stevi. 
Stevi also emphasized that sea ambulance assistance was delivered to help improve and speed up health services for Obi residents. This means of transportation is a complement to Harita Nickel's contribution to supporting health services on Obi Island. 
"These assistances can be considered as our support for the Government of South Halmahera Regency in an effort to improve services to the community," said Stevi.

Previously in November 2022, Harita Nickel also handed over the assistance of 1 unit of a Fire Extinguisher (Damkar) fleet and 1 unit of a Garbage Collection truck fleet worth Rp 2 billion to the Government of South Halmahera Regency.
Stevi added, 1 week earlier (1/3) Harita Nickel Community Development Team with fostered farmers in Buton Village also conducted a rice harvest. Through the Obi Food Security Center (SENTANI) program, farmers have harvested twice with yields increasing 5 times compared to before. 
"This is something we need to be very grateful for amidst the threat of the world food crisis," said Stevi. 
Support for the community certainly does not stop there. In addition to facilities and infrastructure, assistance and support in terms of health, education, and other programs in the economic, infrastructure, and sociocultural fields, Harita Nickel continues to do.

Regent of South Halmahera Appreciates Harita Nickel: I'm Not Flattering, But It's a Fact

Pagi itu, di site Obi, Pulau Obi, Halmahera Selatan tempat Harita Nickel beroperasi.&nbsp; Seorang wanita berkacamata tampak berjalan keluar dari area mess PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP). Beseragam rapi, matanya menatap langit pagi itu dengan penuh harap bahwa apa yang ia kerjakan hari ini dapat menjadi warisan berharga nantinya.

Windy Ashari nama sosok perempuan tersebut. Ia adalah sosok tangguh yang berada di balik pemberdayaan masyarakat desa di lingkar tambang Harita Nickel dalam sektor usaha kecil. Keberadaannya memegang peranan krusial untuk membantu masyarakat lebih berdaya dan mandiri secara ekonomi. Salah satunya, melalui program pendampingan yang telah ia lakukan bersama dengan rekan-rekan satu departemennya.&nbsp;

Wanita kelahiran Banyuwangi 30 Oktober 1993 itu telah meniti karir di Harita Nickel sejak September 2019 lalu. Ia tergabung di departemen Community Development dan menjabat sebagai Small & Medium Enterprise Foreman. Salah satu tugasnya adalah turut serta dalam program Pemberdayaan dan Pengembangan Masyarakat (PPM) yang dilakukan oleh perusahaan.

Bagi Windy, suatu kebanggaan dapat berkarya di Harita Nickel. Terlebih sebagai perempuan ia juga ikut berkontribusi memberdayakan perempuan lainnya yang ada di desa. Sosoknya memang sejak lama tertarik dengan dunia pengabdian masyarakat. Melalui karirnya saat ini, ia dapat belajar serta membantu mengembangkan potensi warga lokal.

Selain itu, wanita yang memiliki hobi membaca buku ini juga sejak awal mendambakan pekerjaan yang berada di luar pulau asalnya, Jawa. Tak heran jika kemudian Windy sangat nyaman mengabdikan dirinya berkarir di Pulau Obi. Menurutnya, berkarir di luar Pulau Jawa dapat memberikannya banyak pelajaran sekaligus wawasan terkait budaya dan keberagaman.

Hasil Dampingan Cetak Omset Hingga Ratusan Juta

Windy pun kini cukup berbangga. Pasalnya, jerih payahnya untuk melakukan pendampingan sudah menunjukkan hasil. Dari pendampingan Usaha Mikro, Kecil dan Menengah (UMKM) di Desa Kawasi telah mendongkrak penghasilan dari warga sekitar.&nbsp;

Untuk produk keripik pisang, misalnya, omset yang diperoleh mencapai Rp 15 - 20 juta per bulannya. Selain itu, Windy juga menjelaskan bahwa perusahaan juga memiliki kelompok binaan minimarket, Hopmart, yang ikut berperan dalam proses pendistribusian produk UMKM Desa Kawasi di kalangan karyawan.&nbsp;

Omsetnya sendiri dapat mencapai Rp 170 - 200 juta per bulan. Lalu ada juga Nyala Cafe, salah satu spot nongkrong favorit karyawan Harita Nickel yang dikelola oleh UMKM dan anggotanya terdiri dari kaum ibu di Desa Kawasi. Omset dari Nyala Cafe sendiri dapat mencapai Rp 15 - 20 juta tiap bulannya. Tentu dengan perolehan omset tersebut, banyak warga yang telah terbantu ekonominya berkat keberadaan perusahaan.&nbsp;

Bahkan kini beberapa UMKM binaan Harita Nickel telah memiliki karyawan sehingga selain membantu perekonomian, hal ini juga telah berperan dalam ketersediaan lapangan kerja bagi warga desa.&nbsp;

Windy pun kian semangat. Jerih payahnya melakukan pendampingan tidak sia-sia. Selanjutnya, ia berharap ragam upaya yang telah ia lakukan bersama dengan tim Community Development Harita Nickel dapat menjadi program yang berkelanjutan di masa mendatang.

“Harapan kami ke depannya, warga dapat terus mengembangkan potensi lokal daerah mereka bahkan ketika perusahaan sudah tidak beroperasi lagi nanti,” kata Windy.

Ia juga berharap program-program yang sudah diadakan oleh perusahaan dapat memberikan dampak kemajuan dalam bidang kewirausahaan serta mendorong warga dapat membangun jaringan bisnis yang lebih luas. Lebih jauh, Windy juga berkeinginan kelak warga yang berada di lingkar tambang dapat menjadi role model bagi seluruh masyarakat yang ada di Pulau Obi.*

Manfaatkan potensi lokal di lingkar tambang


Menurut Windy, community development lahir dari potensi lokal yang ada di suatu daerah yang dapat dikembangkan agar memiliki nilai ekonomis. Di Desa Kawasi, tempat Harita Nickel beroperasi misalnya, pisang merupakan salah satu potensi lokal daerah tersebut yang belum banyak dimanfaatkan oleh warga.

Melalui program dari Community Development, pisang yang ada di Desa Kawasi disulap menjadi keripik yang kemudian penjualannya dapat didistribusikan ke perusahaan. Hal ini terbukti telah membantu menopang perekonomian ibu-ibu rumah tangga yang ada di Kawasi. Setidaknya terdapat belasan ibu-ibu yang merasa terbantu dengan program pendampingan produksi keripik pisang ini.&nbsp;

Selain Desa Kawasi, pemberdayaan perempuan dalam sektor ekonomi juga dilakukan oleh Windy bersama tim Community Development di desa lain. Seperti Desa Soligi yang memanfaatkan kedelai sebagai potensi lokal untuk ditingkatkan nilai ekonomisnya. Hal ini didasari dengan latar belakang Soligi yang memiliki tingkat kesuburan tanah cukup baik dan cocok ditanami kedelai. Selain itu, ketergantungan perusahaan terhadap produk akhir kedelai seperti tahu dan tempe juga terbilang cukup tinggi.

Peluang tersebutlah yang kemudian dilihat Windy sebagai kesempatan emas untuk memberdayakan perempuan di Desa Soligi. Selain diajari cara memproduksi tahu dan tempe, mereka juga didampingi cara menanam sejak awal. Melalui pemberdayaan tersebut, Windy dan tim Community Development Harita Nickel telah berhasil membantu banyak ibu rumah tangga agar lebih mandiri secara ekonomi.

Meskipun Windy mencintai profesinya saat ini, namun ia mengakui juga bahwa sesekali menemui berbagai tantangan dan kendala. Salah satunya adalah lokasi Pulau Obi yang cukup jauh membuat akses distribusi barang menjadi cukup sulit. Tak jarang hal ini memakan waktu bahkan membuat kualitas produk menurun akibat perjalanan yang cukup panjang.

Namun berkat keberadaan perusahaan yang memiliki ribuan karyawan membuat distribusi produk warga lokal terasa lebih mudah. Seluruh produk yang diproduksi oleh warga dapat disalurkan langsung ke perusahaan dengan mengikuti standar kualitas yang sudah ditentukan.*

Windy Ashari - Srikandi Pendamping Warga Lingkar Tambang

Industri pertambangan yang bergerak di bidang eksplorasi mineral, khususnya nikel digadang-gadang memiliki peran yang cukup strategis di masa mendatang. Hal ini seiring dengan target yang dicanangkan Pemerintah untuk Emisi Nol Bersih atau Net Zero Emission (NZE) pada tahun 2060 atau lebih cepat.
Pada November 2022 di Nusa Dua Bali, di sela-sela forum B20 Summit, Signing Agreement B20 Task Force, Sustainability & Climate Business Action, Menteri Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif mengatakan Indonesia akan menghasilkan 1,5 giga ton CO2 pada tahun 2060. Menurut Arifin Nilai emisi tersebut terjadi apabila kita hanya melakukan business as usual tanpa ada upaya untuk bergeser menggunakan energi yang lebih ramah lingkungan. Salah satu upaya yang dilakukan menurutnya adalah dengan beralih menggunakan kendaraan listrik, yang mana kendaraan listrik tidak mengeluarkan emisi gas buang sehingga lebih ramah lingkungan.

Menurut Arifin, jumlah kendaraan di Indonesia mencapai lebih dari 140 juta unit. Kendaraan roda dua (motor), mendominasi dengan jumlah sekitar 120 juta unit. Sebagai informasi, pada roadmap transisi energi untuk mencapai NZE, pemerintah menargetkan pada tahap 2021-2025, jumlah kendaraan listrik 300.000 unit mobil dan 1,3 juta unit motor. Sedangkan pada tahap 2026-2030, jumlah kendaraan listrik ditargetkan 2 juta unit mobil dan 13 juta unit motor.&nbsp;

Sebagaimana diketahui, Pemerintah telah berkomitmen dalam pengurangan emisi melalui ratifikasi Perjanjian Paris yang tercermin dalam UU No 16/2016. Dalam Perjanjian Paris tersebut, Indonesia diharuskan untuk menguraikan dan mengkomunikasikan aksi dalam ketahanan iklim pasca 2020 yang dalam dokumen Kontribusi telah ditetapkan secara nasional (NDC). Dalam dokumen NDC tersebut, Indonesia berkomitmen untuk mengurangi emisi gas rumah kaca sebesar 29% dengan usaha sendiri dan 41% dengan bantuan internasional pada 2030.

Sejalan dengan hal ini, Harita Nickel sebagai salah satu perusahaan yang bergerak di industri pertambangan dan hilirisasi nikel di Pulau Obi turut serta berkontribusi dalam mewujudkan nol emisi karbon yang diharapkan oleh pemerintah.&nbsp;

Melalui semua lini bisnis unitnya, Harita Nickel juga telah melakukan sejumlah upaya untuk menekan emisi karbon di sekitar lingkungan perusahaan.

PT HPL Optimalkan Produksi

PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL), salah satu unit bisnis Harita Nickel saat ini menjadi perusahaan pionir produsen Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) yang merupakan bahan baku baterai kendaraan listrik. MHP dihasilkan melalui pengolahan ore nikel kadar rendah melalui pengelolaan refinery nikel dengan teknologi High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) di Pulau Obi, Halmahera Selatan, Maluku Utara. Saat ini kapasitas produksi MHP di PT HPL mencapai 365 ribu ton per tahun.

Head of Technical Support PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, Rico W Albert, mengatakan, perusahaan berupaya mengoptimalkan kapasitas produksi MHP di Pulau Obi dalam rangka mendukung target NZE. Tidak hanya dari sisi produksi yang menghasilkan bahan baku baterai kendaraan listrik yang lebih ramah lingkungan, di lingkup area operasional pun PT HPL juga melakukan sejumlah upaya untuk menerapkan Net Zero Emission (NZE).

PT HPL lanjut Rico telah menerapkan beberapa upaya yang ramah lingkungan lain seperti dengan penggunaan solar panel di sekitar&nbsp;

area mess karyawan serta&nbsp; pengurangan konsumsi bahan bakar fosil dengan menggunakan kendaraan listrik di area perkantoran dan pabrik. “Kami juga menggunakan teknologi ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator) yakni teknologi pengendalian abu atau debu dari proses pembakaran sehingga lebih ramah lingkungan,” kata Rico.

PT TBP Dukung NZE dengan 3 Prinsip Utama&nbsp;

Sementara itu lini bisnis Harita Nickel di bidang pertambangan PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (PT TBP) telah melakukan beberapa langkah mendukung realisasi net zero emission. Deputy Head of Site PT Trimegah Bangun Persada&nbsp;

(PT TBP), Primus Priyanto menjelaskan setidaknya terdapat 3 prinsip utama yang dilakukan oleh PT TBP dimulai dari pengurangan dan mengontrol emisi karbon, penggunaan energi terbarukan, serta penyerapan gas buang.

Langkah-langkah tersebut diwujudkan melalui upaya rutin melakukan kegiatan pemeliharaan peralatan tambang dan juga kendaraan yang digunakan. “Terdapat program pemeliharaan alat setiap 250 jam, 500 jam dan 1000 jam beroperasi. Melalui pemeliharaan rutin tersebut, diharapkan gas buang dari semua alat produksi dan kendaraan pendukung dapat terkontrol dengan baik,” jelas Primus.

Untuk mewujudkan prinsip energi terbarukan, Primus mengatakan bahwa PT TBP sudah mengaplikasikan penggunaan solar panel di sekitar area jalan kantor dan living quarter karyawan.

Di samping itu, PT TBP juga memiliki

komitmen tinggi pada kegiatan reklamasi, khususnya kegiatan penanaman dan pemeliharaan tanaman yang ada di sekitar area operasional tambang. Melalui komitmen ini, diharapkan emisi gas buang yang ada, mampu diserap oleh tanaman yang telah ditanam.

PT MSP Siap Dukung Transisi Energi

Sementara itu, salah satu perusahaan smelter feronikel milik Harita Nickel, PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP) juga menyatakan kesiapannya untuk mendukung upaya pemerintah dalam menciptakan nol emisi karbon. Sejak tahun 2017 lalu, PT MSP telah menjalankan program penghematan energi dengan menekan penggunaan kertas, air, dan listrik di sekitar area perusahaan.&nbsp;

Selain itu, pada tahun 2020 lalu, PT MSP juga telah membagikan 2.300 kotak makan plastik yang dapat digunakan berkali-kali ke seluruh karyawan dengan tujuan mengurangi sampah plastik dan kertas yang berasal dari kemasan makanan. Langkah ini terbukti efektif mengurangi sampah sekali pakai di area perusahaan.

Head of Technical Support Department PT MSP Willy K Dewadi mengungkapkan, PT MSP sedang melakukan uji coba pemanfaatan limbah domestik berupa minyak jelantah dalam aplikasi teknologi pirometalurgi Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF).&nbsp;

“Kami manfaatkan minyak jelantah sebagai substitusi bahan bakar batubara pada salah satu lini dry kiln kami. Pilot project ini menggunakan 800 liter atau 4 drum minyak jelantah per minggu yang berhasil menurunkan konsumsi batubara sebanyak 20 persen dari biasanya,” ujar Willy. Dikatakan, jika percobaan ini berhasil dan berdampak baik terhadap instalasi, tidak menutup kemungkinan akan diaplikasikan di setiap line nantinya.

Head of External Relations Harita Nickel, Stevi Thomas menegaskan sebagai wujud tanggung jawab perusahaan terhadap upaya mitigasi perubahan iklim Harita Nickel terus melakukan kampanye hemat energi ke masing-masing lini bisnis yang ada di Site Obi.

Stevi mengungkapkan di PT TBP telah dilakukan sejumlah kajian untuk mengantisipasi dampak emisi Gas Rumah Kaca (GRK) yang timbul dari setiap tahap proses penambangan. Menurut Stevi, dampak perubahan iklim dari kegiatan pertambangan berasal dari perubahan lahan dan penggunaan energi fosil untuk pengoperasian alat berat dan peralatan pertambangan.&nbsp;

“Di PT TBP, kami melakukan kegiatan reklamasi dan revegetasi di sepanjang tahapan produksi sebagai wujud dari komitmen kami untuk menjaga dan mengembalikan fungsi lingkungan yang terdampak akibat perubahan topografi dan muka lahan di wilayah operasional,” kata Stevi. Stevi menambahkan, semua unit bisnis Harita Nickel dalam memanfaatkan sinar matahari sebagai sumber energi untuk penerangan jalan, mampu memberikan manfaat ganda. Selain sebagai upaya efisiensi, sumber energi yang tergolong terbarukan ini tidak menghasilkan emisi sebagaimana penggunaan energi berbahan dasar fosil.

Sementara di PT HPL, upaya itu dilakukan melalui komitmen menginternalisasi upaya menekan emisi gas rumah kaca dalam proses produksi. Sehingga operasional PT HPL sejalan dengan semangat memitigasi dampak perubahan iklim. “Kami telah melakukan sejumlah kajian untuk mengantisipasi dampak emisi yang timbul dari setiap tahap proses produksi,” kata Stevi. Perusahaan lanjut Stevi mengatur pemanfaatan sumber energi dalam setiap proses yang dilakukan berdasarkan kaidah dan tata kelola lingkungan yang baik melalui penerapan teknologi rendah emisi. Pemanfaatan teknologi hidrometalurgi dengan teknik High Pressure Acid Leaching memungkinkan nikel limonit diekstraksi pada temperatur 200° celcius yang mengkonsumsi energi&nbsp; jauh lebih rendah dibandingkan&nbsp; teknologi lain. “Dengan tingkat konsumsi energi yang lebih rendah, maka secara otomatis emisi yang dihasilkan dari aktivitas operasional HPAL dapat ditekan,” kata Stevi.*

Peran Harita Nickel Sukseskan Net Zero Emission (NZE)

Stunning stories are continuously broadcasted from the earth of Kie Raha. There was a time when four sultanates were victorious and influenced various parts of the country, there was also a time when European scientists discovered a flora and fauna paradise in the Wallacea zone. Moloku Kie Raha, another name for North Maluku (Malut) Province, has now amazed the world with its abundant mineral resources. The image of Malut is increasingly famous for its endless treasures. 
This province in eastern Indonesia holds 90 percent of domestic nickel reserves, along with the provinces of Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi. Meanwhile, according to the 2020 Nickel Mining Booklet compiled by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), 52 percent of the world's nickel reserves are in Indonesia with a total of 72 million tons of nickel. This number makes Indonesia a major player in the nickel industry.

Abundant mineral resources have attracted the attention of investors, both local and foreign, to invest in North Maluku. Mining Business Permits (IUPs) are starting to emerge. Workers flocked to join and revive this sector. The main target of mining companies is high-grade nickel ore (saprolite) for export. The nickel ore is then processed for various industrial needs, especially those made of stainless steel.

As the nickel mining industry in Indonesia develops, the government sees an opportunity to optimize this sector through downstream. The government then banned the export of nickel ore as of January 1st, 2020 through the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation No. 11 of 2019, which at that time was signed by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ignasius Jonan. This regulation has now been amended by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources No. 17 of 2022.

At the beginning of its appearance, the regulation had panicked some nickel mining business players. They think that the nickel ore export business that has been running so far is under threat. However, this does not apply to HARITA Nickel. The company, which operates on Obi Island, South Halmahera Regency, has been running the downstream industry since 2016. The nickel downstream target launched by the government is also seen as an opportunity by HARITA Nickel.

HARITA Nickel's downstream commitment is shown by the establishment of the Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP) pyrometallurgical smelter in 2016. The factory with the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology is capable of producing 240,000 metric tons of ferronickel per year. MSP processes saprolite mined by Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) and Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS), as mining companies under HARITA Nickel.

HARITA Nickel's transformation does not stop there. After successfully producing ferronickel with MSP&mdash;which uses high-grade nickel&mdash;the next target is to optimize low-grade nickel, which has been considered a “waste product”. Low-grade nickel (limonite) can actually be used as a high-value product. To accomplish this, HARITA Nickel established a Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) refinery in 2019.

This new plant uses High-Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) hydrometallurgical technology. HPAL technology is able to process limonite into Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP). Through the next process, MHP is further processed into nickel sulfate (NiSO4) and cobalt sulfate (CoSO4) with a production capacity of 180,000 tons per year. The product is a raw material for electric vehicle batteries. HARITA Nickel is the first party to successfully implement this HPAL technology in Indonesia.

The moment of inauguration of the HPL factory also received special attention from the central government. The inauguration which took place on Wednesday (23/6/2021) was attended by the Coordinator of Maritime Affairs and Investments Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, Minister of Investment/Investment Coordinating Board Bahlil Lahadalia, and Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning Sofyan Djalil. The ministers were also accompanied by the Governor of North Maluku KH. Abdul Gani Kasuba and South Halmahera Regent Usman Sidik.

On that occasion, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said that the establishment of HPL is good news for the national downstream industry. “We are very proud because we are all witnesses to the history of the establishment of HPAL in Indonesia. Indonesia can prove itself capable. This will be a future downstream development and support for the electric vehicle industry. The government will support the development of HPAL in Indonesia,” he said.

Generating the economy

The year 2020 was a time full of challenges. In addition to a ministerial regulation that prohibits the export of ore, this year the massive Covid-19 pandemic has also spread. Not a few industry players are stumbling because of these obstacles. Some were forced to cut the number of workers, some had to stop their operations completely. Meanwhile, at the Obi Site, HARITA Nickel continues to realize downstream by implementing very strict health protocols for the safety of workers.

The strong commitment of HARITA Nickel is able to make this company survive. Instead of succumbing to the pandemic, the HARITA Nickel downstream project actually accelerated and absorbed a larger workforce. This was realized even when the number of Indonesian unemployed due to Covid-19 increased by 2.56 million people (Central Statistics Agency, August 2020). At the same time, HARITA Nickel also participates in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic with the government, both central and regional, through various means.

HARITA Nickel's efforts have made a real contribution to the economic development of North Maluku. In 2020, the downstream sector plays an important role for the North Sumatran economy to continue to thrive in the midst of a national recession. The recession almost dragged all provinces except North Maluku, Central Sulawesi, and North Kalimantan. North Maluku was impressive by posting an economic growth of 6.66 percent in the third quarter of 2020. The main support is the downstream industry which jumped 106.98 percent.

North Maluku's economy continues to rise even though the Covid-19 pandemic has not completely ended. According to data from Bank Indonesia (BI) of North Maluku, in the third quarter of 2021, this province recorded the second-largest economic growth in Indonesia with a score of 11.41 percent. This figure is below Papua at 14.54 percent and above Central Sulawesi at 10.21 percent. Deputy Head of the BI Malut Representative Office, Hario Kartiko Pamungkas, said that downstream in North Maluku plays an important role in this achievement.

“Downstream products in the form of ferronickel and nickel oxide have the largest portion, with the respective amounts of 93.42 percent and 4.60 percent. This achievement cannot be separated from the development of the nickel smelter and refining industry in South Halmahera, that is HARITA Group which produces ferronickel and Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) as raw materials for electric vehicle batteries," said Hario at the BI Annual Meeting in North Sumatra, Wednesday (24/11). /2021).

North Maluku's economic growth continues. In the first quarter of 2022, there was a growth of 29.63 percent compared to the first quarter of 2021. According to data from the North Sumatra Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), this was again influenced by the downstream industry, which increased by 138.92 percent in the first quarter of 2022. Head of BPS Malut Aidil Adha said the increase in the number of processing factories that produce ferronickel and MHP has contributed greatly.

The contribution of the downstream sector was also recognized by the Secretary of the Provincial Government of North Maluku, Samsuddin A. Kadir. At the plenary meeting for the submission of the 2021 Regional Head Accountability Report (LKPJ), Monday (9/5/2022), he said this sector had made a very significant contribution. Thanks to downstream, the macro performance of North Maluku's development in 2021 can be supported to grow by 16.40 percent. This number has exceeded the target previously set, which is 9.40 percent.

The downstream sector is not only able to improve the North Sumatran economy but is also able to strengthen the national trade balance. President Joko Widodo, in an interview with Bisnis, Thursday (6/1/2022), said that downstream had made the trade balance a surplus. "Now it's been 19 months of trade balance surplus, where did that come from? From the stop of nickel exports. The figure appears to be US$20.8 billion. In the past, land exports containing nickel ore were only US$2 billion a year, meaning there was a very high jump," he said.&nbsp;

HARITA Nickel as a pioneer in the downstream industry in North Maluku continues to transform for the better through improving human resources and technology. Even though it has become the first electric vehicle battery raw material producer in Indonesia, HARITA Nickel is not easily complacent. There are still many innovations that are trying to be realized to reinforce the company's commitment to downstream, including by establishing the Halmahera Jaya Ferronickel (HJF) smelter with an increasingly large production capacity.

Downstream to Build North Maluku

A private yacht slid slowly into the waters of the Kawasi sea that afternoon, on March 3, 2022. Clear skies welcomed the arrival of the ship containing 20 people. While passing through villages and industrial ports, a man in a cap with a white official dress, got out of the ship. He carefully watched the coast of the Kawasi sea.
The man is none other than the Governor of North Maluku KH Abdul Gani Kasuba (AGK). AGK, which goes by the nickname Ustaz Gani, enjoyed the blue and beautiful Kawasi sea, the western part of Obi Island. Upon entering the harbor dock owned by Harita Nickel, he was greeted by <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/climate-change/water-management" target="_blank">a clear turquoise estuary</a>. There is no turbidity or color change at all, as some of the media have recently reported.

Ustaz Gani's sudden, unplanned presence was not without purpose. His attendance, accompanied by the Head of the North Maluku Energy and Mineral Resources Service, Hasyim Daeng Barang, and the environmental investigator of the North Maluku Environment Service, Yusra Hi Noho, and his entourage, came to ensure that Obi sea conditions, especially Kawasi, remained safe and well maintained. The group accompanied by the Head of External Relations of Harita Nickel, Stevi Thomas from Ternate, North Maluku, was immediately greeted by the Person in Charge of Engineering and Environment of HPL, Rico W. Albert. While resting after going through a tiring journey by air and sea since the morning, Rico explained the most recent conditions and developments of Harita.

Rico W. Albert to the Governor and his staff to ensure that all operations are in accordance with and comply with all applicable permits. This commitment is also demonstrated by <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/corporate-governance/good-corporate-governance-framework" target="_blank">good operations</a>, such as the absence of fatalities (accidents that cause death).

“All of these achievements cannot be separated from the support of the Regional Government, both the Regency and the Province, who continue to monitor and guide the company. This good coordination will continue to be improved. We are grateful for that", said Rico in front of the Governor and his entourage.

Rico also explained that, in the future, Harita will become one of the largest nickel management companies in Indonesia that will provide optimal contributions to the region and nation, of course, while maintaining the <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/climate-change" target="_blank">environment</a>. He also ensured that the company has implemented its social responsibility program well and will continue to strive to be better.

After Rico's explanation, Governor AGK in front of Harita management and employees said that he was pleased to directly assess Harita operations and ensure the environment is safe and maintained. This is a form of local government support for investment.

“I am proud of Harita who has invested heavily in my homeland, North Maluku. However, I ask that the environment is still considered by following the existing rules. Harita operations must be able to provide benefits to the region and the community," said AGK when giving directions to Harita Management.

The governor also requested that Harita must continue to look after the environment. Currently, the global world is directing attention to Indonesian nickel, especially Harita. Therefore, Ustaz Gani wants Harita to become a beacon of North Maluku in Indonesia.

"Especially the fact that Harita operates in North Maluku, in South Halmahera Regency, which is my homeland. It is not only Harita who is proud but I am also proud,” he said.

The Governor and his entourage toured the operational area and were accompanied directly by Stevi Thomas who is also the President Commissioner of HPL. To the Governor, Stevi Thomas explained HARITA Nickel's commitment to the environment and ensured that the issue of environmental pollution by Harita was not true, as witnessed by the Governor directly.

On the sidelines of the visit, Yusra Hi Noho who is also the Head of Pollution and Environmental Damage said that out of 109 mining business permits in North Maluku, Harita is the best company in environmental management. Not only that, all helpful recommendations are always responded to positively. Hopefully, this will continue to be improved.

"In terms of the environment, the commitment from Harita Nickel is extraordinary, because of all the companies I evaluated, Harita is still very committed to environmental management," said Yusra to the media crew who accompanied the group.

After touring and reviewing the first nickel refining plant in Indonesia that produces the raw material for the electric car battery, the group again left the location in the afternoon.
