Harita Nickel has once again launched Harita Saruma, a digital creativity training and development program for Insan Harita (Harita personnel). Now in its second batch, the program serves as a collaborative space to learn how to create visual content that is relevant, ethical, and positively impacts both the company’s and individual’s image.
“Harita Saruma is a shared learning space to create content that is not only engaging but also responsible. The materials cover the basics of photography and videography, visual storytelling, as well as brand safety principles and adherence to the company’s social media guidelines, ensuring every work aligns with Harita’s values,” said Casandra Gitaputri, Digital & Social Media Superintendent at Harita Nickel.

For Andra, employees&mdash;known within the company as Insan Harita&mdash;can gain experience, expand their networks, and take on a greater role in the company by contributing meaningful content.

This batch featured Aqil Muhamad Affif, a content creator known for his stunning visuals from around the world. Through photography techniques, storytelling, and tips on building a creator’s identity, Aqil encouraged participants to see social media not merely as a platform for sharing, but as a space to build positive influence.

For one participant, Wigit Sukmawan, Community Relations Supervisor, the experience was invaluable. “Harita Saruma 2025 is full of energy, inspiration, and collaboration. I see it as the first step towards continuous learning, sharing, and growing together in the spirit of impactful communication,” he said.&nbsp;

Learning directly from practitioners like Aqil provided a fresh perspective on effective digital communication, not just as a sharing platform, but as a space for building positive influence.

The program also encouraged cross-unit participation at Harita Nickel, including employees from PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) like Febriyani Sillia. “Through Harita Saruma, I met many new friends from other business units. I gained experience and more friends,” she said. Febriyani appreciated the program, noting that there are many positive ways Insan Harita can introduce Harita Nickel to the public through social media.

Harita Saruma Batch II: Harita Employees Collaborate to Create Engaging Visual Social Media Content 

Kawasi, South Halmahera – The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Khairun University (FKIK Unkhair), in collaboration with Harita Nickel, organized a series of free health check-ups and hypertension education programs for residents in the communities surrounding the company’s operational area in Kawasi Village, Obi Island. Held from August 5 to 9, the initiative reflects the strategic partnership between academia and industry in promoting early detection and prevention of non-communicable diseases.
 
The FKIK Unkhair team, comprising lecturers, laboratory staff, and students, supported by Harita Nickel’s Community Development team, provided health screenings for 129 residents. Examinations included height and weight measurements, waist circumference, fasting blood sugar, blood pressure, kidney function, cholesterol (HDL and LDL), triglycerides, and anemia detection. Residents received detailed explanations of their results along with guidance on maintaining health to prevent chronic conditions.
 
“Previously, I believed that long-term use of hypertension medication could damage the kidneys, but I now understand it prevents complications,” said a resident living with hypertension for 10 years. Other participants also expressed appreciation for receiving comprehensive health services without having to travel outside Obi.

The program concluded on August 9 with a health education session titled Recognize and Prevent Hypertension, delivered by Dr. Nur Upik En Masrika, M. Biomed, head of the FKIK Unkhair team. The session covered causes, risk factors, symptoms, and preventive measures for hypertension, including a healthy diet, exercise, and regular medical check-ups.
 
Dr. Liasari Armaijn, M.Kes., Dean of FKIK Unkhair, acknowledged Harita Nickel’s full support. “Collaborations of this nature allow us to engage directly with the community, provide assistance, and offer practical health solutions,” she stated.
 
Supriyanto, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) & Management System Manager at Harita Nickel, highlighted that this program is a follow-up to a Health Impact Assessment study conducted last year.
 
“In addition to partnering with Unkhair, Harita Nickel implements similar programs biannually. We are committed to ensuring that industrial growth aligns with improvements in the quality of life for surrounding communities,” Supriyanto added.

FKIK Unkhair and Harita Nickel Bring Free Health Check-ups and Hypertension Awareness to Obi Island

As part of its commitment to togetherness and the core value of teamwork, Harita Nickel’s Ternate Representative Office (KPT) Employee Gathering 2025 held its very first Employee Gathering on 10 August 2025 at Sulamadaha Beach, Ternate. Carrying the theme “Let’s Show that Harita Energy is Indonesia’s Energy”, the event became a valuable moment to strengthen relationships among employees outside of daily work routines..
The gathering was also part of the celebration for Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day. From HRGA, Security, Finance, Information Technology (IT), and Logistics to Government Relations, employees came together without position barriers, making the most of this rare opportunity to meet face-to-face.

“This is KPT’s first gathering, and the enthusiasm from everyone is incredible. All the effort from the committee was worth it when I saw those happy smiles,” said Fajrin Sangaji, Event Committee Chair.

Event Coordinator Nurkhalizha Nazla Selang explained that the gathering was designed to encourage more personal interaction. “We all need a break to refresh our minds. Here, people who usually only communicate via email can chat and laugh together while enjoying the beach,” she said.

As part of a wider commitment to sustainable mining practices, Harita Nickel has built and continues to operate a plant nursery facility that plays a crucial role in the post-mining reclamation process. The facility, named <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/media/kabar-obi/k3l/resmikan-loji-central-nursery-harita-nickel-buktikan-komitmen-keberlanjutan-lingkungan">Loji Central Nursery</a>, was inaugurated on January 30, 2025. Here, local and endemic plant seeds are sown and grown into seedlings ready for the regeneration of former mining areas. This facility is not merely an operational complement, but rather forms the basis for ecosystem rehabilitation, reforestation of disturbed land, and comprehensive environmental restoration.
<h3>What is a Nursery?</h3>
In general, a nursery is a place for processing seeds or other plant materials into seedlings ready for planting. Nurseries can therefore play a critical role in post-mining reclamation activities, as they are the first step in restoring land that has been disturbed by mining activities. Nurseries are not merely a complement to post-mining activities, but a fundamental step towards sustainable reclamation.

The Loji Central Nursery on Obi Island has been revitalized into a modern 2.8-hectare nursery facility with a capacity of up to 400,000 seedlings. This facility supports large-scale reclamation activities through a comprehensive, integrated structure. Some of the main facilities on site include:

To support the reclamation program, Loji Central Nursery develops a total of 29 plant species. These plants can be categorized into three main groups:

<h5>1. Pioneer Plants</h5>
Pioneer plants are fast-growing, resistant to extreme conditions, and help to initiate land restoration. Some examples of pioneer plants cultivated at the Harita Nickel nursery include the sea pine, sea sengon, and eucalyptus.

<h5>2. Local Plants</h5>
This group comprises vegetation that is native to the North Maluku region. These species have been chosen due to their adaptability to local climate and soil conditions. Examples include bintangur, marsawa, matoa, and gosale.

The use of local plants in the reclamation program is part of Harita Nickel's environmental initiative, which emphasizes the importance of biodiversity conservation. This step not only strengthens the native ecosystem around the mine area; it also reflects the company's commitment to maintaining natural balance through a sustainable approach based on local wisdom. In addition to supporting post-mining environmental regeneration, the use of at least 40% local species demonstrates a focus on more effective and harmonious ecological adaptation to local conditions.

Fruiting plants and other MPTS are developed to provide additional benefits, such as fruit that can be utilized by the local community and can support the presence of fruit-eating fauna. This includes jackfruit, cempedak, rambutan, cashew, and matoa.

In reality, Harita Nickel manages tailings from the HPAL process by solidifying them through a&nbsp;Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF). First, the tailings are neutralized to eliminate any toxins resulting from acid leaching. Then, the solid and liquid fractions are separated using a filter press. The liquid portion is further treated in a&nbsp;Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), while the solid fraction (dry tailings), with a moisture content of about 30%, is compacted and placed in former mining areas to ensure ground stability.
This DSTF method of tailings management was first implemented in Indonesia by Harita Nickel. The operational costs are far from cheap.&nbsp;For illustration, with an annual tailings output of 8.6 million tons from the HPAL plant operated by&nbsp;PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), a total of 300 workers are employed across five divisions: Geotechnical Engineering, Hydrology & Hydrogeology, Tailing Facility Planning, DSTF Earthwork, and Leachate Treatment Plant.

So what happens to the dry tailing placement areas when it rains, given they are in open spaces? The tailings placement facility is equipped with drainage systems, leachate collection ponds, buttresses (retaining walls), groundwater monitoring wells, and tools to monitor water quality and soil stability. 
In areas with high rainfall, maintaining the slope stability of tailings piles is essential, as the dry tailing material is sensitive to water content changes. To ensure that the piles remain stable and safe, the Geotechnical Division team constantly monitors compaction levels, controls the geometry of the piles, and provides recommendations on safe placement zones for tailings.

While heavy rainfall can benefit the nickel laterite formation process, it also demands special handling of runoff and groundwater&mdash;especially in dry tailing storage areas. Improper handling can lead to landslides and environmental contamination.

This is where the&nbsp;Hydrology & Hydrogeology team&nbsp;plays a key role&mdash;ensuring runoff water is managed properly and does not interfere with tailings placement activities. Despite high rainfall, operations continue safely and remain free from pollution risks.

The Leachate Treatment Plant team monitors water in the leachate treatment pond to ensure it meets environmental quality standards before discharge. 
Amid the 24-hour operations and the high-risk potential, particularly regarding environmental contamination, there’s something else that keeps the DSTF team united.

Turning Tailing into Opportunity

In commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (HANI) on June 26, 2025, Harita Nickel reaffirmed its strict zero-tolerance policy toward the abuse of narcotics, psychotropics, and other harmful addictive substances (drugs). This commitment is part of the company's broader efforts to foster a healthy, safe, and drug-free working environment across all operational units.
Yohanes, Deputy Head of HRGA at Harita Nickel, emphasized the company’s full support for government initiatives aimed at preventing and eliminating drug abuse. “Our zero-tolerance policy is not designed to punish employees, but rather to protect everyone’s safety and maintain a productive and conducive work environment,” Yohanes explained.

As part of this commitment, Harita Nickel actively conducts anti-drug campaigns through routine education and regular drug tests at its operational sites. Recently, PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), PT Obi Nickel Cobalt (ONC), and PT Dharma Cipta Mulia (DCM) conducted urine tests involving approximately 200 randomly selected employees from various departments. Similar initiatives have previously been implemented by PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP).

"This initiative is a continuous effort to ensure that our workplace remains safe, healthy, and free from drug abuse. In the future, we plan to gradually expand testing to cover all employees,” Yohanes added.

Harita Nickel’s site doctor, dr. Dominicus Bintang Mahardhika Jati, explained that workers in extractive industries such as mining often face significant physical and mental pressures. Therefore, regular education and drug screenings are crucial preventive measures. “We continuously educate our employees about the risks of drug abuse and the importance of maintaining optimal physical and mental health to safely perform daily tasks,” said dr. Dominicus.

Taufik Setiadji, Industrial Relations Manager at Harita Nickel, reiterated the company’s firm stance against any form of illicit substance abuse. “Our internal regulations explicitly prohibit employees and contractors from bringing, possessing, using, or distributing drugs within our operational areas,” Taufik affirmed.

He added that a healthy work environment isn’t just about good facilities, it also depends on the commitment of each person. By promoting a drug-free culture, Harita Nickel wants to create a safe and productive workplace for all.

Harita Nickel Reinforces Commitment to a Drug-Free Workplace

The Obi Fishing Tournament 2025 organized by Harita Nickel on June 14-15 brought an unexpectedly meaningful moment in marine conservation. One participant, Zulfikri R. Salim, caught a tiger shark, an apex predator not listed among the competition’s targeted species. Following sustainable fishing practices enforced by the tournament regulations, the shark was immediately released back into its natural habitat.
The organizers awarded Zulfikri with a special recognition, the "Unique Catch" category, highlighting not only the sportsmanship and compliance of participants with sustainable fishing rules but also sending a powerful message about the importance of marine life conservation around Obi Island.

“The presence of tiger sharks indicates a balanced marine ecosystem that continues to support large marine species. This is an essential positive indicator for us as we strive to operate responsibly and sustainably,” explained Aldico Satria Ganesa, Marine Ecology Foreman at Harita Nickel.

The richness of Obi Island’s marine biodiversity is further demonstrated by the discovery of other significant species during marine ecology monitoring around Kawasi Village waters. Notably, the Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), a giant reef fish capable of reaching lengths of up to two meters and weighing up to 190 kilograms, inhabits these waters.

Known for being docile and often approaching divers, the Napoleon wrasse has a unique characteristic: it's a hermaphroditic species, capable of changing sex from female to male. It also plays a vital role as a natural predator of sea urchins and crown-of-thorns starfish, two species that can damage reefs if their populations are uncontrolled.

There's also the green humphead parrotfish (Bolbometopon muricatum), locally known as "ikan mami" or "tabongkula." This largest parrotfish species is known for its strong teeth and head, capable of biting and crushing dead coral into white sand grains. Though rarely seen, specimens over three feet long are still occasionally encountered in Obi's waters, indicating that the coral reef conditions in this area remain supportive of large species sensitive to environmental pressure.

"The underwater beauty of West Obi Island is like a mesmerizing natural gallery. This area is also an important habitat for various key species, such as Napoleon wrasse, groupers, and reef sharks, indicating a well-maintained ecosystem," Aldico added.

Obi's Marine Biodiversity: From Tiger Sharks to Napoleon Wrasse

Demonstrating its commitment to employee safety and operational sustainability, Harita Nickel, in collaboration with the Disaster Risk Reduction Center (DRRC) of the University of Indonesia, will organize a Large-Scale Exercise (LSE) or Integrated Disaster Management and Emergency Response Simulation at its operational site on Obi Island from July 27–29, 2025.
Carrying the theme "Integrated Management of Natural and Technological Disasters," this LSE is an advanced development of the company’s routine emergency drills, designed to further strengthen preparedness and response capabilities.&nbsp;

This LSE, themed "Integrated Management of Natural and Technological Disasters", builds upon routine drills to enhance the team's readiness and response capabilities in emergency situations. The exercise will involve employees from various departments across all business units, who will participate as emergency response task forces as well as simulated victims.

According to Supriyanto Suwarno, Occupational Health and Safety Manager at Harita Nickel, the drill scenario is a complex disaster within the downstream nickel and cobalt industry. It will simulate an earthquake followed by a tsunami, causing operational disruptions and employee casualties. Additionally, this disaster triggers a Natech (Natural Hazard Triggering Technological Disaster) incident, involving power disruptions and potential gas leaks in the acid plant area.

"This LSE will be conducted simultaneously across all business units to test the coordination and rapid response capabilities of all teams. This activity is purely preventive and aims to enhance the company's capability in managing emergency situations," explained Supriyanto.

He further added that the scenario was developed based on a thorough study by DRRC UI, as part of a meticulously planned mitigation effort. This training reflects the company's proactive approach to anticipate and manage various risks systematically.

Preparations for the LSE have been underway since June 2025. The task force structure involves departmental representatives from all business units. Adhering to the Incident Command System (ICS), a recognized standard in emergency management, the task force is divided into four divisions: Operations, Planning, Logistics, and Administration.

"Given the vast and complex nature of our operations here, an integrated emergency response task force involving all business units is crucial," stated Erich Marvin Rizal Mongdong, the field coordinator for the exercise. "While we routinely conduct small-scale drills, this large-scale integrated simulation will further strengthen our team's readiness for real-world emergencies."

Prior to the main exercise, the team conducted a Table Top Exercise and a Document Review Exercise, guided by DRRC University of Indonesia on July 24, 2025. These preliminary steps aimed to ensure the effectiveness of the ICS in a multi-hazard scenario and the readiness of standard operating procedure documents for each unit.

“During the simulation, participants will be evaluated by external observers from DRRC UI and relevant stakeholders from the South Halmahera Regency and North Maluku Provincial Governments,” Erich noted, highlighting three key objectives of emergency management: (1) ensuring employee safety, (2) protecting company assets, and (3) guaranteeing operational continuity post-disaster.

Through this large-scale emergency response simulation, Harita Nickel advances its capabilities in mitigating and managing workplace risks, reinforcing its commitment to occupational safety and operational sustainability.

Enhance Preparedness, Harita Nickel Conduct Large-Scale Integrated Emergency Response Exercise
