The newly constructed commercial area in Kawasi New Settlement was officially inaugurated through a festive event SAPA Kawasi 2025 (Semarak Pasar Rakyat Kawasi) on 15-24 May 2025. This inauguration marks an important milestone in building an economic hub for the community around Harita Nickel's operations on Obi Island, South Halmahera.&nbsp;
The commercial area is an economic support facility in the new settlement of Kawasi Village, a program initiated by the South Halmahera Regency Government and supported by Harita Nickel to provide decent and integrated housing. Residents who previously traded in the old settlement get replacement kiosks located strategically in this newly developed and organized location.&nbsp;

Kawasi Village Head, Arifin Saroa, in his remarks at the SAPA Kawasi launching night, invited the community to utilize the commercial area as an economic resource for local traders in the new settlement. He also asked for support from Harita Nickel so that employees could support it by shopping at the local market. 
In addition to the commercial area, Arifin also expressed his appreciation to Harita Nickel for providing access to the Akelamo River bridge, which connects Kawasi and Soligi villages. According to him, land access can encourage local economic growth.&nbsp;

“Let's organize it well so that we can trade together, do you agree, waina Soligi and Kawasi?&nbsp; Waina from Soligi and Kawasi can now work well in business because Harita Nickel has opened business spaces, giving us access to land routes. Let's support Harita's programs together, because these programs are very useful,” he said, inviting local traders (waina) who were present that night.

Deputy Head of Technical Support of PT Obi Sinar Timur, one of Harita Nickel's subsidiaries, Amirudin, said SAPA Kawasi is a a tangible demonstration of the company’s commitment to local economic development. He expressed hope that&nbsp; SAPA Kawasi, as a means to promote commercial areas, can raise the potential of local MSMEs.&nbsp;

The grand launch night of SAPA Kawasi was enliven by the performance of guest star Alan Darmawan, who performed his song “100 Million.” As the crowd mingled with Insan Harita, they sang together in front of the entertainment stage. Meanwhile, children were seen enjoying a number of game rides not far from the entertainment arena. MSME stalls selling various culinary delights, handicrafts and daily necessities were attracting visitors.

Regent of South Halmahera, Hasan Ali Bassam Kasuba, who officially opened the event, praised the collaborative effort in establishing this economic hub. “On behalf of the Regency Government, I appreciate the inauguration of this economic area. I see great potential to encourage the economic growth of the community, especially MSMEs. Hopefully Kawasi will grow into a healthy, prosperous and competitive area,” he said.

After soft launching, Halsel local government through Harita Nickel will take a number of finishing works in the economic zone, such as greening and tidying up. Furthermore, after everything is complete and ready, the committee will make a grand launching.&nbsp; 
Through the development of this commercial area, Harita Nickel and the South Halmahera Regency Government remain committed to continuously improving local community welfare and supporting sustainable economic growth on Obi Island.

Just Launched, Kawasi Village Economic Zone to Ignite Local Economy

Used cooking oil, typically viewed as household waste, is now being strategically utilized as an alternative energy source at PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), a Harita Nickel operating unit on Obi Island.
Through its innovative use in the nickel ore drying process (dryer kiln), used cooking oil has enabled MSP to reduce daily coal consumption by up to 10%. This alternative energy source now contributes approximately 21% of the total heat energy required for drying operations.

Beyond energy efficiency, the initiative has generated immediate cost savings of IDR 79 million, with projected annual savings of up to IDR 320 million per production line.

Agung Sunardi Munim, Environment Compliance & Monitoring Supervisor at MSP, noted that the idea originated from the simple concept of repurposing waste cooking oil from the company’s canteen. “We identified unused kitchen oil as an overlooked asset. After testing, it proved to be both efficient and environmentally safe,” said Agung.

Since January 2023, the Environment team has developed and installed a dedicated system for collecting, filtering, storing, and injecting used cooking oil into the combustion chamber of the dryer kiln. Within three months, the system became fully operational and remains in consistent use.

By April 2023, the process was integrated into regular operations. The initiative follows detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring efficient scheduling and systematic management.

“Starting April 2023, the initiative has been applied routinely and is now fully integrated into our operational processes,” he added.

From an environmental standpoint, the use of used cooking oil offers significant benefits. With a calorific value of around 9,000 kcal/kg, higher than lignite coal, it generates fewer emissions and avoids harmful residues such as fly ash or excessive particulates. It also helps prevent water pollution and supports the company’s zero-waste objectives, aligning with regulatory standards under PermenLHK No. 4/2014 and Permen P.68/2016.

Due to its success and tangible impact, the program was awarded First Place at the business unit level in the Harita Continuous Improvement (HCI) 2024 event. It has also received recognition from the government as a concrete step toward supporting Sustainable Energy Initiatives in the industrial sector.

This initiative underscores PT MSP’s commitment to operational efficiency, environmental responsibility, and energy transition. It highlights how simple, data-driven innovations can yield substantial impact, both for the environment and the future of Indonesia’s nickel industry.

Low Emissions, Innovation of Used Cooking Oil into Alternative Energy at Harita Nickel Smelter

World Environment Day 2025 under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution” reminds us that protecting the earth is a shared responsibility. Through an Enviro Talk discussion session entitled “Real Action for Our Earth”, Insan Harita organized a joint movement to stop plastic pollution.
The discussion, which was packaged in a casual yet contained vibe, was held at Cafe Kahyangan, an employee mess complex of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP), one of Harita Nickel's business units. Three internal speakers from the company shared knowledge about environmental management practices in their respective workplaces. 
 
Alam Firdausi, Environmental Superintendent, opened the discussion by explaining the hierarchy of waste management and its impact on the environment.
 
He introduced the circular economy concept, referencing William McDonough’s Cradle to Cradle framework. This model advocates for resource use in production processes that avoids waste generation by reintegrating materials into sustainable cycles.
 
“If we fully embrace the circular economy, waste will no longer be an issue in the future. All materials can be managed and repurposed instead of being disposed of,” he explained.
 
In alignment with this, Mokhamad Rifai, Mine Reclamation Superintendent, addressed the key theme of plastic waste. He emphasized the challenges posed by plastic’s slow degradation and potential toxicity, encouraging public understanding of plastic types through packaging symbols.
 
Rifai cited the risks associated with reusing mineral water bottles repeatedly due to potential chemical leaching when exposed to heat. He also highlighted Indonesia’s position as the world’s second-largest contributor to ocean plastic pollution.
 
Accordingly, he urged participants to adopt the principles of refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle in their daily lives. He shared practical examples, such as repurposing used plastic bottles as tissue holders or biofilters in the company’s waste treatment facilities.

 Additionally, M. Saifullah Nijar, Senior Environment Compliance Engineer, shared the team’s experience in organic waste management. He outlined a straightforward composting approach that utilizes existing equipment and materials.
 
Saifullah attributed the program’s success to active collaboration across stakeholders, stating, “We produce compost from organic waste collected from kitchen leftovers at the canteen. The compost is primarily used as fertilizer in public areas such as offices and places of worship.”
 
On this year's Environment Day (HLH), Harita's employees reaffirmed their commitment to implement business practices that promote environmental and social sustainability. 
 
In addition to TBP, other business units also organized various events to celebrate HLH. Among others, Harita Mengajar on plastic waste management will target school students in Kawasi Village, waste cleanup around the beach, and the annual Obi Fishing Tournament which will be held in mid-June.&nbsp;

World Environment Day 2025, Insan Harita Takes Action to Stop Plastic Pollution

PT Obi Sinar Timur (OST),&nbsp;one of Harita Group's affiliated companies, has adopted emission control technologies to minimize the environmental impact of its coal-fired power plant (PLTU) operations in Kawasi Village, Obi Subdistrict, South Halmahera, North Maluku. This initiative is a vital part of the company’s commitment to responsible environmental management.
Amiruddin, Deputy Head of Technical Support at PT OST, stated that the company currently operates a power plant with a total capacity of 910 MW, out of an installed capacity of 1,670 MW&mdash;part of which is still under construction. The power plant consists of one 150 MW unit and four units of 380 MW each.
 
“To improve air quality management, each unit has been equipped with emission control technology tailored to its operational characteristics,” he explained.
 
Amiruddin further elaborated that each power plant stack is fitted with a calibrated Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS). This equipment provides real-time emissions data for parameters including Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂), Nitrogen Oxides (NOₓ), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Mercury (Hg), and Particulate Matter. The system is directly connected to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry’s Industrial Emissions Monitoring Information System (SISPEK).
 
To reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, all generating units are equipped with low-NOₓ burners, which are designed to minimize NOₓ formation at the combustion stage by precisely controlling temperature and airflow. Meanwhile, to capture particulate matter from combustion, exhaust gases are first passed through an Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP)&mdash;a technology that uses an electric field to trap fine particles, resulting in extremely low particulate levels in the air released through the stacks.
 
Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) emissions are controlled using different approaches depending on the unit capacity. The 150 MW unit utilizes a limestone injection system that reacts directly with SO₂ gases inside the boiler furnace. For the 380 MW units, the company employs Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) technology&mdash;recognized as one of the most effective methods for reducing sulfur content in industrial flue gas at scale.
 
Amiruddin emphasized that all emission control processes are closely monitored using the CEMS, which can instantly detect changes in emission levels. “With this technology, we can ensure that all emissions released meet the applicable standards,” he added.
 
Through this approach, Harita Group demonstrates that industrial sustainability does not have to come at the expense of air quality and environmental health. This commitment aligns with the company’s broader efforts to support responsible and sustainable national nickel downstream development.

Harita Group Implements Emission Control Technologies to Safeguard Air Quality

In May 2025, Harita Nickel had the honour of attending the OECD Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains in Paris. This globally respected event, hosted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), brings together industry leaders, policymakers, and civil society to shape the future of responsible mineral sourcing&mdash;a topic central to the world’s clean energy transition.
The Forum has become a key platform for discussing how critical minerals&mdash;such as nickel, lithium, manganese, and cobalt&mdash;are sourced, supplied, and integrated into technologies that power electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy systems. These resources are essential, but their extraction, processing and supply carry significant environmental and social responsibilities.

Harita Nickel attended amongst a host of critical mineral producers from key regions. Anglo American (UK–South Africa) mines a range of minerals including platinum and iron ore; SQM Lithium (Chile) is one of the world’s largest lithium producers; and Eramet (France) specializes in manganese and nickel.&nbsp;

Each of these companies contributes a vital link in the EV or energy transition supply chain, and we were proud to come together with a shared goal: to promote responsibility and transparency in the inherently complex and high-impact industry of mining.

<h4>Bridging Policy and Practice in Responsible Mining

One&nbsp; session&mdash;“On-the-Ground Impacts of Due Diligence: Perspectives from the Mining Sector”&mdash;focused on how ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards are being implemented at mine sites and how the sector is moving beyond compliance and evolving continuously. Moderated by Aimee Boulanger, Executive Director of the <a href="https://responsiblemining.net/">Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance</a> (IRMA), the discussion highlighted the growing importance of credible, globally recognised benchmarks.

At Harita Nickel, we shared how aligning with IRMA’s multi-stakeholder standard is helping us turn policy into practice. This process has strengthened internal accountability, improved risk management, and brought cross-departmental teams together around shared sustainability goals.

From Obi Island to Paris: Sharing Our ESG Journey at the OECD Forum

Obi Island is known for its abundant natural resources and rich biodiversity. Harita Nickel, one of the mining companies operating on the island, is actively engaged in environmental conservation as part of its commitment to responsible mining.
One of Harita Nickel's concrete initiatives is its annual flora and fauna monitoring program, conducted regularly within its operational areas. This program involves independent third-party experts to ensure objective and credible results.

“We carry out regular monitoring and surveys with the involvement of independent parties. The goal is to observe the existing flora and fauna–both before and after mining activities, as well as in reclamation and revegetation areas,” said Retno Dewi Handayani, Green Mining Manager at Harita Nickel.

Over the past few years, Harita Nickel has conducted several monitoring efforts that reveal the rich biodiversity potential of Obi Island. Observations have recorded various species of flora and fauna, including several that are endemic and protected. One particularly interesting finding is the sighting of the Halmahera Cuckooshrike (Lalage aurea), an endemic species to Obi Island known for its distinctive rust-red belly.
This bird belongs to the Campephagidae family and is classified as “Least Concern” on the IUCN Red List. Its presence within Harita Nickel’s operational area serves as a significant indicator of Obi Island’s ecological value and shows that its natural habitat remains preserved–even in an industrial setting.&nbsp;
In addition to the Halmahera Cuckooshrike, observations have also recorded the presence of other endemic species such as the Scarlet-breasted Fruit Dove (Ptilinopus bernsteinii), Obi Golden Bulbul (Hypsipetes lucasi), Obi Fantail (Rhipidura obiensis), Cinnamon-bellied Imperial Pigeon (Ducula basilica), Goliath Coucal (Centropus goliath), Halmahera Flowerpecker (Dicaeum schistaceicep), as well as fruit bats like Nyctimene albiventer and Dobsonia viridis, and arboreal mammals such as the Polynesian Rat (Rattus exulans), which is active at night.

 Among insects, the presence of various dragonfly and butterfly species also serves as an important indicator of a well-maintained environment. Notable discoveries include the endemic dragonfly Palaiargia obiensis and the endemic butterfly Troides criton.

These two species are known to be highly sensitive to ecosystem changes, especially in terms of water quality and vegetation diversity. Dragonflies, for instance, can only breed in clean, unpolluted waters, while butterflies rely on the availability of host plants and wildflowers to survive.

“In recent years, we’ve also seen a stable trend in wildlife diversity levels, including endemic species that indicate the balance of natural ecosystems,” Retno added.
The stable trends observed in the biodiversity of bird taxa, insects, and other fauna groups such as small mammals and herpetofauna–as recorded in previous monitoring, serve as a positive indicator of the effectiveness of revegetation and post-mining ecosystem recovery efforts. To further strengthen these ecosystems, the company has also implemented a sustainable revegetation strategy by planting pioneer tree species and integrating local tree species throughout reclamation areas.

 Trees such as Marsawa, Meranti, Ketapang, Banyan, Red Jabon, and Angsana are planted strategically to create habitats that support wildlife. This diverse vegetation is essential to supporting the lives of various fauna, from fruit-eating and nectar-feeding birds to insects like dragonflies and butterflies.
Beyond field activities, continuous education for employees and stakeholders is also a key focus for the company. Ongoing awareness efforts about wildlife protection and the importance of maintaining ecosystem balance are integrated into Harita Nickel’s work culture.

“We continue to emphasize the importance of preserving natural balance. Education about the ban on wildlife hunting is a key agenda across all Harita Nickel business units,” Retno said.

Through a combination of scientific monitoring, environmental rehabilitation, and social education, Harita Nickel strives to ensure its industrial operations align with the ecological sustainability of Obi Island. This initiative is part of the company’s vision to be a responsible, adaptive, and forward-thinking mining industry player with a long-term commitment to nature conservation.

Tracing the Footprints of Biodiversity on Obi Island

Harita Nickel has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the local economy by launching the PELANGI Program (Perhimpunan Nelayan Kampung Tabuji - Tabuji Village Fishermen Association) in Tabuji Hamlet, Baru Village, Obi District, South Halmahera Regency. The program was officially introduced on Saturday, May 17, 2025, during an event attended by representatives from the district and village governments, community leaders, and local fishermen group members.
PELANGI is a community-based economic empowerment initiative targeting 20 members of the fishermen group in Tabuji Hamlet. Through participatory approaches and planning, the program is designed to increase the community’s real income by promoting sustainable marine resource management.

Mohammad Mona Putra, Agriculture & Fishery Superintendent at Harita Nickel, stated that PELANGI is part of the company’s strategy to encourage the development of independent enterprises that have a direct impact on community welfare.

“We hope this program not only serves as a short-term solution but also opens long-term business opportunities for the fishermen in Tabuji,” he said.

Harita Nickel has provided several forms of assistance, including a speed boat unit and a traditional fish trap building (sero). Going forward, the company plans to construct a storage warehouse for the catch and provide other supporting infrastructure.

In addition, the company will regularly offer assistance to strengthen and build the capacity of the group, including support in organizational management, operations, production, marketing, and financial management.

Salmon Gogerino, Chairman of the PELANGI Fishermen Group, expressed appreciation for the support. “Besides the equipment assistance, we also received guidance in developing structured business plans. We hope the support from the village government and related authorities will continue, especially for the administration of official fisherman identities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Obi Subdistrict Head, Ali La Jahiria, expressed his appreciation for Harita Nickel’s contribution in supporting community empowerment efforts. He emphasized the importance of synergy between the company, the government, and community groups in ensuring the success of the program.

“We appreciate this initiative and are ready to provide support within our capacity, both at the subdistrict level and through coordination with the village government. We hope the group will carry out this program with integrity and solidarity, so the benefits can truly be felt. We will also assist with the administrative process to ensure that group members obtain official identification as registered fishermen,” he stated.

Through this program, Harita Nickel underscores the importance of long-term collaboration and expressed its commitment to continuing its support throughout the implementation phase, including regular monitoring and capacity development for the group.

Looking ahead, the company will continue to strengthen cross-sector collaboration and ensure the program’s sustainability as part of its long-term strategy to promote inclusive and equitable economic independence for the local community.

Harita Nickel Supports the Independence of Tabuji Fishermen Through the PELANGI Program

As part of its ongoing commitment to community development, Harita Nickel conducted an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign titled “Prevent Before It’s Too Late” on May 14-15, 2025. The initiative engaged 300 students from SMA Negeri 35 South Halmahera in Soligi Village and SMA Tunas Muda in Kawasi Village. Marlon Vergi Kurama, a teacher at SMA Tunas Muda Kawasi, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in the school environment. “HIV/AIDS is a serious disease with far-reaching consequences, not only for individuals but also for families and communities. This program plays a critical role in educating students to make informed choices and maintain healthy social interactions,” he said.

The sessions featured three key speakers: Ulfah Maghfirah, S.Psi., a youth and child welfare advocate, along with Agus Setiawan and Indra Lesmana Rahayu from the Harita Nickel Obi Clinic. Using an interactive and accessible approach, including an educational game called “Fact or Myth.” The speakers delivered key messages about adolescent development, behavioral risks, and personal responsibility.

“We educate in stages, starting with self-awareness, changes during adolescence, and the risks of harmful behaviors such as promiscuity and drug abuse. The goal is to empower teenagers to make responsible decisions,” explained Ulfah Maghfirah.

This awareness campaign is part of Harita Nickel’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, particularly in the area of public health. “Based on input from schools, health clinics, and local midwives, we identified growing concerns around adolescent behavior, including early marriage and rising visits to health facilities. As a result, we prioritized HIV/AIDS education for this round of outreach,” said Sahabuddin Abdullah, Community Development Staff at Harita Nickel.
Beyond addressing adolescent health, Harita Nickel remains firmly committed to supporting youth development through education and vocational training. One such initiative is the recently launched <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/media/kabar-obi/csr/harita-nickel-buka-pelatihan-bahasa-mandarin-jawab-tantangan-industri-global">PELITA Vocational Mandarin Language Program</a>, aimed at enhancing the future employability of local youth.

Thirty young participants from Kawasi and Soligi villages have enrolled in the Mandarin training program, conducted in partnership with a Jakarta-based language training institution. The program will run for approximately six to seven months.

Harita Nickel believes this initiative will expand employment opportunities for the younger generation on Obi Island, particularly in sectors that require Mandarin language proficiency and skilled labor.

Through these integrated education and capacity-building programs, Harita Nickel continues to embed positive values and contribute to long-term sustainable development in the region. Harita Nickel Educates Hundreds of Obi Students on Early HIV/AIDS Prevention

Business and manufacturing are just one aspect of Harita Nickel. Equally crucial is making sure the company's presence has observable and significant positive effects for nearby communities. The Harita Nickel 2024 Sustainability Report demonstrates this dedication by indicating that community empowerment initiatives scored 89 on the Community Satisfaction Index (classified as Very Good) and had an average Social Return on Investment (SROI) of 2.62&mdash;meaning every Rp1 invested produced Rp2.62 in social value.
Ranging from microenterprise growth to food security, these initiatives address a great spectrum of community needs. For example, HOP Mart run by 16 local people made Rp2.9 billion in 2024. Other projects, such RUTE (Rumah Usaha Tangguh Ekonomi)&mdash;focused on tofu and tempeh manufacture&mdash;earned Rp580 million, while Nyala Café, run by people in the area, made Rp836 million in revenue.
 
Harita Nickel's CSR team spearheaded a participatory strategy that underpins this achievement. Guided by a Community Development Master Plan that fits with both local and national laws, every program is planned using social impact assessments and a human rights–based methodology.

South Halmahera Regent Hasan Ali Bassam Kasuba attended the event and expressed his appreciation and optimism for the newly established Kawasi Village Economic Zone.

“On behalf of the Regency Government, I sincerely appreciate the inauguration of this new economic area. This is my first time visiting the site directly, and I see great potential here to boost local economic growth, especially for small and micro enterprises. I hope Kawasi grows into a healthy, prosperous, and competitive region,”&nbsp; said the Regent.&nbsp;

Ifan Farianda, Head of the SAPA Kawasi Committee and Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel, explained that the event is intended to become an annual tradition to energize the local economy.

“SAPA Kawasi is the starting point of what we hope will become a yearly celebration. By bringing together local business bazaars, entertainment, and the participation of Harita Nickel employees, we want to introduce this commercial area as a new economic driver for Obi Island. Frans Datang, Secretary of Kawasi Village, encouraged everyone to get involved and support this initiative as a step toward self-reliance. “This economic zone isn’t just for Kawasi, but also for nearby villages like Soligi. Let’s unite to strengthen our shared economic future,” said Frans.
Support from the industry was also strong. Agung Aribowo, Deputy Department Head of Technical Support at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (a Harita Nickel business unit), emphasized the value of SAPA Kawasi as a platform for empowering local communities.
“We fully support this initiative. SAPA Kawasi provides space for people to explore business opportunities and grow their entrepreneurial spirit. It’s all part of our shared commitment to building a sustainable local economy,” said Agung.
