Harita Nickel held the Obi Fishing Tournament 2025 entitled “Let's Keep Our Sea” on Saturday-Sunday, June 14-15, 2025 in the sea of Kawasi Village, Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. The fishing tournament, which has entered its fourth year, is a routine agenda of Harita Nickel with its operational community to promote the biodiversity of Obi sea waters.
Chairman of the Obi Fishing Tournament 2025 Committee, Ferry Mangindano, said this year's fishing tournament was attended by 135 participants, consisting of 86 local residents and 49 company employees. The fishing area is around Harita Nickel's operations in Kawasi Village, which stretches from the Akelamo River estuary to around the waters of Mala-Mala Island. The total prizes provided were worth Rp 29 million.

As of closing time, 94 kg of fish were caught by the participants. The types of fish varied, ranging from snapper, grouper to tuna.

"The actual number of catches is greater, due to the fact that only fish weighing more than 3 kg were submitted to the committee. This shows that the fish in the waters around Harita Nickel are still abundant, proof that its sustainability is still maintained," said Ferry.

One of the participants, Max Sikape (50) with his partner Sonny Tamansa (48), came out as the second winner with 12 points. They managed to catch two groupers and one snapper with a total weight of 22 kg around the waters of Mala-Mala, not far from the company's jetty.

"We would have won first place if the barracuda fish of about 20 kg had not escaped. The fish was in our hands, but it came off," he recalled with a laugh. Even so, they were still happy to bring home the Rp6 million cash prize.

Meanwhile, for the most unique catch category, the title was won by Zulfikri Salim, employee of Harita Nickel who managed to catch a tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier). However, the shark was immediately released back because of its important role in maintaining the marine ecosystem's health.

Obi Fishing Tournament 2025 was highlighted by Khairun Ternate University academic, Prof. Janib Achmad, S.Pi, M.Sc. The professor of Marine Natural Materials Chemistry said the fishing tournament initiated by Harita Nickel is important to foster ecological awareness among the community. According to him, awareness of fish and water conservation is closely correlated with marine ecological patterns.

"Later, the catches of the participants will confirm that our waters provide fish in diverse numbers and types. Based on that, we can see the size, species, and condition or level of productivity of the existing fishing ground," he explained, during his visit to the fishing tournament.

Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Harita Nickel, Tonny Gultom said, the fishing tournament was designed as a means of friendship between the company and the community and at the same time to strengthen awareness of the importance of preserving the sea.

“This year, we feel grateful that this activity is also a platform for cross-party collaboration ranging from internal employees, local communities, village government elements, to all partners who contribute, to jointly protect the sea as a source of life,” said Tonny.

Tonny emphasized that such activities are in line with the company's commitment to sustainable mining and downstream practices. According to him, marine health is one of the key indicators for the sustainability of the company's operations. To ensure the quality of waters around the company's operations is maintained, it conducts regular monitoring with the support of a competent team and modern equipment.

Obi Fishing Tournament 2025 was closed by cooking fish caught by the participants and then enjoyed together.&nbsp;

"The spirit is collaboration. In the momentum of World Environment Day, we invite the community to jointly protect the environment for future generations," he concluded.

Obi Fishing Tournament 2025: Abundant Fish Catch, Kawasi Sea Waters Still Productive

Used cooking oil, typically viewed as household waste, is now being strategically utilized as an alternative energy source at PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), a Harita Nickel operating unit on Obi Island.
Through its innovative use in the nickel ore drying process (dryer kiln), used cooking oil has enabled MSP to reduce daily coal consumption by up to 10%. This alternative energy source now contributes approximately 21% of the total heat energy required for drying operations.

Beyond energy efficiency, the initiative has generated immediate cost savings of IDR 79 million, with projected annual savings of up to IDR 320 million per production line.

Agung Sunardi Munim, Environment Compliance & Monitoring Supervisor at MSP, noted that the idea originated from the simple concept of repurposing waste cooking oil from the company’s canteen. “We identified unused kitchen oil as an overlooked asset. After testing, it proved to be both efficient and environmentally safe,” said Agung.

Since January 2023, the Environment team has developed and installed a dedicated system for collecting, filtering, storing, and injecting used cooking oil into the combustion chamber of the dryer kiln. Within three months, the system became fully operational and remains in consistent use.

By April 2023, the process was integrated into regular operations. The initiative follows detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring efficient scheduling and systematic management.

“Starting April 2023, the initiative has been applied routinely and is now fully integrated into our operational processes,” he added.

From an environmental standpoint, the use of used cooking oil offers significant benefits. With a calorific value of around 9,000 kcal/kg, higher than lignite coal, it generates fewer emissions and avoids harmful residues such as fly ash or excessive particulates. It also helps prevent water pollution and supports the company’s zero-waste objectives, aligning with regulatory standards under PermenLHK No. 4/2014 and Permen P.68/2016.

Due to its success and tangible impact, the program was awarded First Place at the business unit level in the Harita Continuous Improvement (HCI) 2024 event. It has also received recognition from the government as a concrete step toward supporting Sustainable Energy Initiatives in the industrial sector.

This initiative underscores PT MSP’s commitment to operational efficiency, environmental responsibility, and energy transition. It highlights how simple, data-driven innovations can yield substantial impact, both for the environment and the future of Indonesia’s nickel industry.

Low Emissions, Innovation of Used Cooking Oil into Alternative Energy at Harita Nickel Smelter

World Environment Day 2025 under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution” reminds us that protecting the earth is a shared responsibility. Through an Enviro Talk discussion session entitled “Real Action for Our Earth”, Insan Harita organized a joint movement to stop plastic pollution.
The discussion, which was packaged in a casual yet contained vibe, was held at Cafe Kahyangan, an employee mess complex of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP), one of Harita Nickel's business units. Three internal speakers from the company shared knowledge about environmental management practices in their respective workplaces. 
 
Alam Firdausi, Environmental Superintendent, opened the discussion by explaining the hierarchy of waste management and its impact on the environment.
 
He introduced the circular economy concept, referencing William McDonough’s Cradle to Cradle framework. This model advocates for resource use in production processes that avoids waste generation by reintegrating materials into sustainable cycles.
 
“If we fully embrace the circular economy, waste will no longer be an issue in the future. All materials can be managed and repurposed instead of being disposed of,” he explained.
 
In alignment with this, Mokhamad Rifai, Mine Reclamation Superintendent, addressed the key theme of plastic waste. He emphasized the challenges posed by plastic’s slow degradation and potential toxicity, encouraging public understanding of plastic types through packaging symbols.
 
Rifai cited the risks associated with reusing mineral water bottles repeatedly due to potential chemical leaching when exposed to heat. He also highlighted Indonesia’s position as the world’s second-largest contributor to ocean plastic pollution.
 
Accordingly, he urged participants to adopt the principles of refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle in their daily lives. He shared practical examples, such as repurposing used plastic bottles as tissue holders or biofilters in the company’s waste treatment facilities.

 Additionally, M. Saifullah Nijar, Senior Environment Compliance Engineer, shared the team’s experience in organic waste management. He outlined a straightforward composting approach that utilizes existing equipment and materials.
 
Saifullah attributed the program’s success to active collaboration across stakeholders, stating, “We produce compost from organic waste collected from kitchen leftovers at the canteen. The compost is primarily used as fertilizer in public areas such as offices and places of worship.”
 
On this year's Environment Day (HLH), Harita's employees reaffirmed their commitment to implement business practices that promote environmental and social sustainability. 
 
In addition to TBP, other business units also organized various events to celebrate HLH. Among others, Harita Mengajar on plastic waste management will target school students in Kawasi Village, waste cleanup around the beach, and the annual Obi Fishing Tournament which will be held in mid-June.&nbsp;

World Environment Day 2025, Insan Harita Takes Action to Stop Plastic Pollution

In May 2025, Harita Nickel had the honour of attending the OECD Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains in Paris. This globally respected event, hosted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), brings together industry leaders, policymakers, and civil society to shape the future of responsible mineral sourcing&mdash;a topic central to the world’s clean energy transition.
The Forum has become a key platform for discussing how critical minerals&mdash;such as nickel, lithium, manganese, and cobalt&mdash;are sourced, supplied, and integrated into technologies that power electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy systems. These resources are essential, but their extraction, processing and supply carry significant environmental and social responsibilities.

Harita Nickel attended amongst a host of critical mineral producers from key regions. Anglo American (UK–South Africa) mines a range of minerals including platinum and iron ore; SQM Lithium (Chile) is one of the world’s largest lithium producers; and Eramet (France) specializes in manganese and nickel.&nbsp;

Each of these companies contributes a vital link in the EV or energy transition supply chain, and we were proud to come together with a shared goal: to promote responsibility and transparency in the inherently complex and high-impact industry of mining.

<h4>Bridging Policy and Practice in Responsible Mining

One&nbsp; session&mdash;“On-the-Ground Impacts of Due Diligence: Perspectives from the Mining Sector”&mdash;focused on how ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards are being implemented at mine sites and how the sector is moving beyond compliance and evolving continuously. Moderated by Aimee Boulanger, Executive Director of the <a href="https://responsiblemining.net/">Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance</a> (IRMA), the discussion highlighted the growing importance of credible, globally recognised benchmarks.

At Harita Nickel, we shared how aligning with IRMA’s multi-stakeholder standard is helping us turn policy into practice. This process has strengthened internal accountability, improved risk management, and brought cross-departmental teams together around shared sustainability goals.

From Obi Island to Paris: Sharing Our ESG Journey at the OECD Forum

Obi Island is known for its abundant natural resources and rich biodiversity. Harita Nickel, one of the mining companies operating on the island, is actively engaged in environmental conservation as part of its commitment to responsible mining.
One of Harita Nickel's concrete initiatives is its annual flora and fauna monitoring program, conducted regularly within its operational areas. This program involves independent third-party experts to ensure objective and credible results.

“We carry out regular monitoring and surveys with the involvement of independent parties. The goal is to observe the existing flora and fauna–both before and after mining activities, as well as in reclamation and revegetation areas,” said Retno Dewi Handayani, Green Mining Manager at Harita Nickel.

Over the past few years, Harita Nickel has conducted several monitoring efforts that reveal the rich biodiversity potential of Obi Island. Observations have recorded various species of flora and fauna, including several that are endemic and protected. One particularly interesting finding is the sighting of the Halmahera Cuckooshrike (Lalage aurea), an endemic species to Obi Island known for its distinctive rust-red belly.
This bird belongs to the Campephagidae family and is classified as “Least Concern” on the IUCN Red List. Its presence within Harita Nickel’s operational area serves as a significant indicator of Obi Island’s ecological value and shows that its natural habitat remains preserved–even in an industrial setting.&nbsp;
In addition to the Halmahera Cuckooshrike, observations have also recorded the presence of other endemic species such as the Scarlet-breasted Fruit Dove (Ptilinopus bernsteinii), Obi Golden Bulbul (Hypsipetes lucasi), Obi Fantail (Rhipidura obiensis), Cinnamon-bellied Imperial Pigeon (Ducula basilica), Goliath Coucal (Centropus goliath), Halmahera Flowerpecker (Dicaeum schistaceicep), as well as fruit bats like Nyctimene albiventer and Dobsonia viridis, and arboreal mammals such as the Polynesian Rat (Rattus exulans), which is active at night.

 Among insects, the presence of various dragonfly and butterfly species also serves as an important indicator of a well-maintained environment. Notable discoveries include the endemic dragonfly Palaiargia obiensis and the endemic butterfly Troides criton.

These two species are known to be highly sensitive to ecosystem changes, especially in terms of water quality and vegetation diversity. Dragonflies, for instance, can only breed in clean, unpolluted waters, while butterflies rely on the availability of host plants and wildflowers to survive.

“In recent years, we’ve also seen a stable trend in wildlife diversity levels, including endemic species that indicate the balance of natural ecosystems,” Retno added.
The stable trends observed in the biodiversity of bird taxa, insects, and other fauna groups such as small mammals and herpetofauna–as recorded in previous monitoring, serve as a positive indicator of the effectiveness of revegetation and post-mining ecosystem recovery efforts. To further strengthen these ecosystems, the company has also implemented a sustainable revegetation strategy by planting pioneer tree species and integrating local tree species throughout reclamation areas.

 Trees such as Marsawa, Meranti, Ketapang, Banyan, Red Jabon, and Angsana are planted strategically to create habitats that support wildlife. This diverse vegetation is essential to supporting the lives of various fauna, from fruit-eating and nectar-feeding birds to insects like dragonflies and butterflies.
Beyond field activities, continuous education for employees and stakeholders is also a key focus for the company. Ongoing awareness efforts about wildlife protection and the importance of maintaining ecosystem balance are integrated into Harita Nickel’s work culture.

“We continue to emphasize the importance of preserving natural balance. Education about the ban on wildlife hunting is a key agenda across all Harita Nickel business units,” Retno said.

Through a combination of scientific monitoring, environmental rehabilitation, and social education, Harita Nickel strives to ensure its industrial operations align with the ecological sustainability of Obi Island. This initiative is part of the company’s vision to be a responsible, adaptive, and forward-thinking mining industry player with a long-term commitment to nature conservation.

Tracing the Footprints of Biodiversity on Obi Island

Water management has emerged as a key indicator of corporate sustainability amid growing pressures from climate change and industrial expansion. This is especially critical in the mining sector and its downstream, which is characterized by high water consumption and significant potential for environmental impact.
Harita Nickel has recognized these challenges from the beginning as part of the nickel processing and refining ecosystem on Obi Island. In its <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/files/sustainability_assets/Laporan%20Keberlanjutan%20Harita%20Nickel%202024.pdf">2024 Sustainability Report</a>, the company recorded a total water withdrawal of 867,835 megaliters (ML), with 91% of that amount&mdash;or approximately 787,902 ML&mdash;sourced from seawater. This seawater is used to replace freshwater, especially for the cooling process of power plants.

In addition, 38,764 ML&mdash;or around 4% of the total water used&mdash;was sourced from rainwater collected within the operational area. This strategy reflects a proactive approach to reduce reliance on limited freshwater by using rainwater.

Beyond utilizing seawater and rainwater, Harita Nickel has also implemented a comprehensive water reuse strategy. More than 10 million cubic meters (m³) of water have been successfully recycled for various purposes, including sediment control and other operational needs.

To support effective sediment control, Harita Nickel has constructed and manages more than 52 sedimentation ponds within the Mining Business License (IUP) areas of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) and PT Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS). These ponds are designed to capture sediment particles carried by mining activities before the water is discharged into the environment, per the government's regulated standard.

“Harita Nickel’s initiatives deserve recognition. When I first visited, the existing infrastructure was not yet optimal. However, during my most recent visit to Obi, I observed that they had built a significantly larger sediment pond compared to other nickel mines,” said Dr. Ir. Muhammad Sonny Abfertiawan, S.T., M.T., Lecturer and Researcher in Water and Wastewater Engineering at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).

One of the largest sediment ponds is located at the Tuguraci 2 site, with a water retention capacity of 924,000 cubic meters and an area of approximately 42 hectares. The sedimentation process in this pond helps reduce water turbidity and ensures that the water quality meets the required standards, particularly for pH and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) parameters. This large pond is equipped with a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) to ensure that the water that comes out meets quality standards. Daily monitoring is also carried out at licensed compliance points, and sediment material is regularly removed from the pond and placed in a former mine for reclamation. The treated water from this pond is also reused.

Daily monitoring is conducted at authorized discharge points, and when sediment levels reach 70% of the pond's capacity, dredging is performed to maintain the pond’s operational efficiency.

According to Sonny, the initial step in managing mining water is understanding its characteristics.

“Each mining operation has unique conditions. For example, two coal mines located close to each other may have different water qualities. One mine’s water is acidic and contains high levels of sulfides, while the other’s is not acidic. Therefore, it’s essential to assess both the volume and quality of the water to determine the most suitable treatment approach,” he explained.

Based on his research, Sonny highlighted that nickel mine water in Indonesia typically has a neutral to alkaline pH (8-9), with most heavy metals suspended, making them relatively easy to settle. However, when dissolved metals such as Cr6 are present, special treatment is required, typically involving reduction using ferrous sulfate (FeSO₄).

To ensure that both mining water and treated wastewater meet the regulated standards, Harita Nickel has implemented a comprehensive water quality monitoring system. This system is aligned with SPARING (Continuous and Online Industrial Wastewater Quality Monitoring System) as outlined by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Additionally, the company conducts regular water quality testing through both its internal laboratories and accredited third-party labs.

Looking ahead, Harita Nickel remains committed to advancing innovations in water management, focusing on enhanced efficiency and environmental sustainability. These efforts are an integral part of the company’s long-term commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and Goal 13 (Climate Action).

With a dynamic and integrated approach, Harita Nickel underscores that sustainable water management is not only feasible but essential to ensuring the continued success of both the industry and the environment.

Sea Water, Rain Harvesting, Reuse—Harita Nickel’s Water Innovation Pipeline

On the southern coast of Obi Island, specifically in Soligi village, a community group called Tongke,&nbsp;which means “mangrove” in the local language, has long been caring for the mangrove forest that grows along their village’s shoreline. Formed independently in 2019, this group emerged from the local community’s growing awareness of the importance of protecting the environment that sustains their lives.
In recent years, collaboration with Harita Nickel has strengthened these conservation efforts. The synergy between local wisdom and the company’s technical support brings new hope for the sustainability of coastal ecosystems and the communities that rely on the sea and mangrove forests for their livelihoods.
 
The village of Soligi has a coastline stretching 1.7 kilometers and a mangrove ecosystem covering 23.01 hectares. The mangroves in this region play a vital role as barriers against coastal erosion, natural habitats for marine life, and carbon sinks that support climate change mitigation efforts.
 
Recognizing this strategic value, Harita Nickel has implemented a mangrove conservation program as part of its environmental and social responsibility. This program uses a participatory approach, emphasizing the active role of the community, particularly the Tongke group, at every stage of the initiative.

As a key partner in the initiative, the Tongke group receives comprehensive training and capacity-building support. This includes education on mangrove species, seedling cultivation techniques, site-specific planting methods, and monitoring and evaluation of conservation outcomes. These activities are designed to equip group members with the skills needed to manage the mangrove ecosystem independently and sustainably.
 
According to Ifan Farianda, Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel, “We aim to ensure that the presence of our company within the community also brings lasting benefits to the environment. This mangrove conservation initiative is not just for today, it is an investment in the future of Soligi Village.”
 
Throughout 2024, Harita Nickel and the Tongke group have planted 1,030 mangrove seedlings through various community-based activities. These efforts also involved students, local government representatives, and academic institutions such as Khairun University.
 
The selected species,&nbsp;Rhizophora mucronata and Rhizophora stylosa,&nbsp;were chosen based on their ecological compatibility with Soligi’s coastal conditions. Seedlings are cultivated and maintained at a nursery facility within the village, fully supported by the company to ensure long-term success and sustainability.
The Tongke group has also taken further steps by developing its own independent mangrove seedling business. This initiative allows them to produce high-quality mangrove seedlings, which are used for replanting efforts and also sold as a local product to neighboring villages across Obi Island.
 
Taher, Head of the Tongke group, shared, “Through these trainings, our understanding of mangroves has significantly deepened. We now recognize their vital role and feel more prepared to protect our village’s mangrove forests.”
 
Harmin Muhammad, Chairman of Soligi’s Village Consultative Body (BPD), expressed his aspirations, “We hope Harita Nickel will continue supporting not only mangrove conservation but also initiatives in healthcare, education, and agriculture. This is just the beginning of broader positive change.”
Beyond Soligi, Harita Nickel has expanded its conservation programs to other villages in South Halmahera Regency. Since 2021, over 67,000 mangrove seedlings have been planted across 23.04 hectares in four villages: Soligi (Obi District), Awango and Belang-Belang (Bacan District), and Guruapin (Kayoa District). These efforts are carried out through cross-sector collaboration involving universities, village governments, and local residents.
As the downstream nickel industry grows in Obi Island, Harita Nickel remains committed to ensuring that economic advancement goes hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility. Tongke Group: A Community-Based Environmental Conservation Initiative

On 27 March 2025, a loud siren echoed across the Nirwana office area on Obi Island. Within seconds, dozens of Harita Nickel employees rushed out of the building and quickly moved to the assembly point. It wasn’t a real emergency. It was an earthquake drill organized by the Emergency Response Team (ERT) from PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP) and PT Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS).

This drill is part of Harita Nickel’s regular efforts to train employees to respond to disasters. Notably, Harita Nickel’s Director of Operations, Younsel Evand Roos, joined the drill and played the role of an employee needing medical attention. His participation underscored the message that safety is a shared responsibility across all levels of the company.

A week later, on April 4, 2025, another emergency simulation took place at Panji Selatan Port. This time, the scenario involved a fuel spill caused by a leaking pipe at the fuel station. The ERT team responded quickly, using fire extinguishers and hydrants to control the situation. During the simulation, one responder pretended to suffer burns and was promptly treated with first aid equipment.

These drills are more than just routine exercises. For Harita Nickel, they’re a key part of responsible mining practices and ensuring everyone understands how to react if a real emergency happens.

Ngainur Rofiek, Head of Mining Engineering at GPS, highlighted the importance of these drills in developing practical skills. “Using safety equipment, performing evacuations, and giving first aid must be practiced regularly. These are essential for safety in the mining environment,” said Rofiek.

He also emphasized the value of teamwork. “Strong teamwork as one of our core values is critical in any emergency situation,” he added.

Muhammad Randy, one of the drill coordinators, noted that the scenarios mirror risk matrices required for the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) audit. “This is part of our continuous improvement to meet responsible mining standards,” he said.

These drills clearly show Harita Nickel’s commitment to prioritizing safety, building a culture of readiness, and upholding sustainable and responsible mining principles.

Earthquake and Fire Drills Sharpen Harita Nickel’s Emergency Readiness

Harita Nickel, through PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, has successfully implemented a Watershed Rehabilitation (Rehabilitasi Daerah Aliran Sungai or Rehab DAS) program covering 1,765 hectares (ha) at Tigalalu protected forest area in Kayoa Island and Laluin Island, South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province. Mufti Sodik, Forestry Permitting & Compliance Manager of Harita Nickel, said watershed rehabilitation is part of the company's commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible mining practices.&nbsp;
As a Forest Area Use Approval Permit (IPPKH) holder, Harita Nickel has an obligation to rehabilitate watersheds in critical land cover forest areas. Planting activities are carried out by involving the surrounding community, while monitoring and evaluation are carried out by relevant agencies. Based on the assessment of the success rate of planting carried out in three stages, Harita Nickel was declared successful and has handed over the results of watershed rehabilitation planting to the government.

The rehabilitation approach integrates both ecological and social aspects. In addition to planting seven species of native plants, such as nutmeg, cloves, walnut, and cashew, the program actively involves local communities. These plant species were selected not only for their ability to restore ecosystems but also for their economic potential for surrounding communities.

“These plants not only represent the rich biodiversity of the Maluku Islands but also carry real economic value. Nutmeg and cloves, for instance, have been part of the spice economy in the archipelago for hundreds of years,” said Mufti Sodik, Forestry Permitting & Compliance Manager at Harita Nickel.

Until its completion at the end of 2024, the program has received praise from various stakeholders, including government officials and local leaders. More than just benefiting from the outcomes, the community has been involved from the very beginning. “Community members are engaged in everything, from planting to maintenance,” Mufti added.

Nurbaity Radjiloen, Head of the South Halmahera Forest Management Unit, expressed her appreciation. “As local authorities, we are truly grateful to see the positive results of this watershed rehabilitation program. Hopefully, it can be replicated in other areas across South Halmahera,” Nurbaity explained.&nbsp;

Echoing that sentiment, Sukur Lila, Head of the North Maluku Forestry Department, emphasized that the program addresses both environmental and community economic concerns.

“Harita Nickel has demonstrated goodwill through the Watershed Rehabilitation program, which aims to protect the environment, especially forests in North Maluku, while also generating economic benefits for local communities,” said Sukur.

One of the program’s key strengths is the involvement of local residents. Rum Saleh, a community leader from Guruapin Village, expressed pride in the program, which he sees as a tangible opportunity for locals.&nbsp;

“This program is expected to bring economic benefits to our people. The community’s direct participation in planting and other activities makes us feel involved and valued,” Rum explained.&nbsp;

A watershed is more than just a waterway, it’s a vital part of the ecosystem. Without healthy vegetation, watersheds become vulnerable to floods, landslides, and soil degradation. This is what drove Harita Nickel to restore protected forests through an ecologically based watershed rehabilitation program.

This initiative is not just a formality, but a genuine expression of care for both the environment and local communities. “This rehabilitation effort not only improves natural conditions, but also reflects the company’s long-term commitment to conservation,” said Afian Eko Purnomo from the Ake Malamo Watershed Management Office.

With this program, Harita Nickel reaffirms its long-term commitment to environmental sustainability and meaningful community involvement. “This watershed rehabilitation is an important step to support the water cycle, reduce erosion, and ultimately bring economic benefits to surrounding communities,” Mufti Sodik concluded.

Harita Nickel Rehabilitates 1,765 Hectares of Protected Forest in North Maluku

As part of its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its mining and nickel processing operations, Harita Nickel has built two coal storage domes on Obi Island, North Maluku.
Each dome measures 600 meters in length and 140 meters in width, with a storage capacity of up to 370,000 tons of coal.

“These coal domes prevent coal dust from spreading into the environment. The dust stays inside the dome,” said Tonny Gultom, Director of Health & Safety Environment at Harita Nickel. He illustrated the massive size by comparing it to five football fields combined, all under one roof.

The domes are specially designed to be completely enclosed and are filled with inert gas to lower oxygen levels inside. This reduces the risk of fire and helps maintain coal quality. Beyond protecting the coal from weather exposure, the design also effectively prevents dust from escaping into the surrounding environment.

 Another key measure is the use of covered conveyor belts to transport coal from the dock to the storage domes at one of its business units, PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF). This system replaces trucks and heavy equipment, significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
“In fact, the use of conveyors has helped cut coal consumption in the smelter by 6.4%, which is equivalent to avoiding 271 tons of CO2e emissions,” he added. “We also use covered conveyor belts to deliver coal from the domes to the power plant,” he said.

While various innovations have been implemented, Harita Nickel remains committed to further minimizing its environmental footprint.
