As a key supplier to the EV battery chain, Harita Nickel ties growth to carbon‑smart operations. At its PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) HPAL plant on Obi Island, a waste‑heat recovery (WHR) system now converts exhaust heat into electricity, saving energy equivalent to 9 million litres of gasoline annually and avoiding 307,988 t CO₂e.
&nbsp;Circular thinking extends to the cafeteria. Harita Nickel has also taken a novel approach to waste by repurposing used cooking oil&mdash;generated from meal services for its 20,000 employees&mdash;into an alternative fuel for smelter operations. The reused oil replaces approximately 21% of thermal coal calories each day, reducing daily coal consumption by up to 10 metric tons. Director of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Tonny Gultom says the pilot program could be expanded if proven to be technically viable over the long term.

&nbsp;In the Obi Industrial Estate, Harita Nickel has installed solar panels for street lighting, generating 98 gigajoules of energy and cutting emissions by 42.83 tons of CO2e. Since 2023, biodiesel has also been used for transportation and power generation, yielding 908,220 gigajoules of energy and avoiding up to 45,011 tons of CO2e emissions.
Tonny emphasized that sustainability is the foundation of the company’s operations. “Responsible mining must deliver long-term benefits, not just economically, but also socially and environmentally,” said Tonny.&nbsp;
 
Harita Nickel’s commitment to responsible practice is also reflected with a net-zero emissions target by 2060, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications under its belt, and other future energy efficiency projects. With these, Harita Nickel proves its strategic role as a pioneer of sustainable mining in Indonesia.

Harita Nickel Reinforces Commitment to Sustainable Practices through Energy Transition

Harita Nickel is stepping up its commitment to environmental stewardship, implementing a comprehensive biodiversity monitoring programme across its reclamation and revegetation sites, as well as several operational zones on Obi Island, an area recognised for its rich ecological value.
According to Muharwan Syahroni, Deputy Head of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at Harita Nickel, the company conducts routine ecological surveys annually over a three-week period. The process, managed by independent third-party experts, focuses on tracking flora and fauna populations before, during, and after mining operations, including the reclamation phases.

“We conduct monitoring through independent partners to ensure objectivity. The aim is to assess the presence and condition of flora and fauna before mining begins, and to observe the recovery process following revegetation,” Syahroni explained.

Encouragingly, recent monitoring has shown signs of ecological recovery. Several native plant species have successfully re-established themselves in reclaimed areas, while sightings of local wildlife, particularly bird and reptile species, have also increased.

Notably, the populations of mammals, birds, herpetofauna, and insects are showing signs of stability. This includes species endemic to the Maluku Islands, such as the Green Flying Fox (Dobsonia viridis) and the Halmahera Cuckooshrike (Lalage aurea), both considered ecological treasures of the region.

In the insect category, researchers have identified 28 species of dragonflies from 8 families and 46 species of butterflies across 4 families. Their sustained presence is widely regarded as a strong bioindicator of environmental health and ecological integrity.

“In recent times, we’ve seen stable trends among several native species, including key endemics. Their continued presence signals that the ecological balance is being preserved,” said Syahroni.

Among the more visually striking species observed is the Black Sunbird (Cinnyris frenatus), a nectar-feeding bird commonly found among flowering trees in the revegetated zones. Its return indicates that a functioning ecosystem is gradually re-establishing itself.

Beyond the technical aspects of reclamation, Harita Nickel has also launched a company-wide environmental awareness campaign. The initiative emphasises a firm prohibition on wildlife hunting and disturbance, aimed at protecting vulnerable species and fostering long-term ecological resilience.

“We emphasise the importance of preserving the island’s biodiversity. Education around anti-poaching and environmental protection is a key part of our operations across all business units,” Syahroni added.

By integrating rigorous monitoring with on-the-ground education and habitat restoration, Harita Nickel is aiming to position itself not just as a leader in responsible nickel production, but also as a long-term steward of Obi’s ecological legacy.

Harita Nickel Strengthens Biodiversity Safeguards in Obi  Through Monitoring and Education

Kawasi Spring plays a vital role in meeting the clean water needs of local residents. It is located in one of the small valleys, precisely on the lower slope of the smelter building owned by Harita Nickel at the Obi Island Site. Despite being in the middle of industrial operations, Kawasi spring is still flowing and maintaining its quality.&nbsp;
To ensure the spring is safe as a source of raw water, Harita Nickel conducts periodic monitoring of a number of indicators such as pH levels, water temperature, turbidity to oxygen levels in water. As a result, all of these indicators meet quality standards.&nbsp;

Based on the latest results of testing water samples conducted by an independent laboratory, it was found that the pH is within safe limits (7.87), very low levels of Chromium Hexavalent (Cr-VI) (&lt;0.005 mg/l), and adequate oxygen content.

Prof. Dr. M. Janib Achmad, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science at Khairun University, stated that test results indicate the water quality from the Kawasi spring is in reasonably good condition. "For various domestic uses, water should have a pH above 7&mdash;higher levels are even more favorable. Elevated acidity levels can promote algae growth," he explained.Meanwhile, according to him, if the Hexavalent Chromium (Cr-VI) is still low, it is very safe. Usually this Cr level is related to the soil layer because almost every soil contains chrome, if it exceeds the limit it is dangerous. “This spring water is still suitable for drinking, the community uses it in Kawasi, but indeed the community often complains that there was sediment that covered the spring water,” he said.

One of the residents of Kawasi Village, Yolius Langkodi, confirmed that the Kawasi spring continues to be used by locals as a primary source of raw water.
 
"For our daily needs, we collect water from the Kawasi spring," he said.
 
Yolius explained that the spring has existed for a long time. In the past, people referred to it as air babunyi because its sound could be heard all the way to the settlement. Since the company's presence, he added, water from the Kawasi spring has been channeled through pipes directly to residents' homes.
 
"Access to clean water is now much more convenient. All residents draw their water from the Kawasi spring. This has been made possible thanks to the company’s efforts," he stated, while also urging Harita Nickel to continue protecting the Kawasi spring so that it remains a sustainable resource for the community.
Meanwhile, Harita Nickel's Health & Safety Environment Director, Tonny Gultom, said the company is committed to carrying out responsible integrated mining operations by addressing environmental and social aspects. This includes ensuring sustainability of the Kawasi spring which is currently used by residents for raw water sources and also other springs that are used for the company's operations, namely Lake Karo and Lake Loji.&nbsp;

“To maintain several vital water sources, the company carries out reclamation to rehabilitate post-mining land, plant trees along the watershed, conduct regular water quality monitoring and manage mine runoff water so that the released water does not pollute the environment,” he explained.&nbsp;

Kawasi Spring Preserved, Residents: Clean Water is at Hand 

Operating along the coastal stretch of Obi Island in North Maluku, Harita Nickel has been recognized with a Green Rating by CNBC Indonesia, a testament to the company's long-term commitment to preserving both marine and terrestrial ecosystems surrounding its nickel mining operations.
Since 2010, Harita Nickel has routinely monitored water quality near Kawasi Village, which borders the company’s industrial zone. Independent studies conducted by the Bogor Agricultural Institute and Khairun University in Ternate confirm that seawater in the area remains healthy and capable of sustaining marine life. “Obi waters are fertile due to high chlorophyll content. Marine productivity remains intact,” said Prof. Dr. M. Janib Achmad of Khairun University. Similarly, Prof. Dr. Inneke Rumengan of Sam Ratulangi University observed stable marine biodiversity from 2015 through 2021.

To ensure oceanic health, Harita Nickel has invested in an array of monitoring technologies including survey vessels, CTD sensors, multiparameter gauges, and remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), essential tools for accessing aquatic zones beyond the reach of divers. The company has also developed artificial coral reefs made from nickel slag, aimed at enhancing fish populations and bolstering the livelihoods of local fishermen.

“To date, we have deployed 1,696 artificial reef units around our operational waters. Marine environmental protection has always been our top priority,” said Windy Prayogo, Environmental Marine Compliance Manager at Harita Nickel. 
Research from the two universities also identified key marine species such as thresher sharks, blacktip reef sharks, and the endangered Napoleon wrasse. Local fisherman Saidi Jouronga dismissed allegations of marine pollution in the area. “It’s not true that Kawasi waters are ‘dirty’ or lifeless. I was born here and fish here daily. There are still plenty of fish, and they’re biting,” he said.

On land, Harita Nickel monitors biodiversity across a 5,000-hectare mining area. In 2023 alone, the company documented more than 290 plant and animal species, including 29 endemic to the region. Notably, 30% of its industrial area has been designated as green space and wildlife corridors.

In recognition of these efforts, Harita Nickel received the Green Rating at CNBC Indonesia’s 2024 Green Economic Forum, an award honoring companies that integrate sustainability into operations, from energy efficiency and ecological conservation to environmentally friendly innovation.

Harita Nickel Earns Green Ratings from CNBC Indonesia  for Commitment to Land and Marine Conservation

Beneath the blistering sun and relentless tides of Obi Island’s coastal waters, Prasari Riski Hutami stands out with her strong determination. Prasari Riski Hutami, a marine diver from Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, is part of the environmental monitoring team at Harita Nickel, a major player in Indonesia’s mining sector. With a 14-kilogram oxygen tank on her back, she dives regularly to inspect artificial coral reefs and assess the health of the marine ecosystem surrounding the company’s operations.
The role carried out by Prasari is a tangible reflection of Harita Nickel’s commitment to preserving the marine environment around Obi Island. Since 2022, the company has implemented a coral reef restoration program using Reef Cubes&mdash;hollow structures made from an environmentally friendly mix of concrete and nickel slag. By March 2025, a total of 2,092 Reef Cubes will have been deployed across three strategic locations: Pasturi Island, the waters near the company’s port, and the coastal area surrounding the new settlement of Kawasi Village.

Over three years of implementation, quarterly monitoring has recorded coral growth from the Pocillopora and Porites genera, with an average growth range of 0.03 to 4.79 centimetres. This data suggests that the artificial substrates used have been effective in supporting the natural regeneration of coral reefs. The program has also had a positive impact on the coastal economy: surveys have identified 136 fish species from 64 genera and 24 families living around the Reef Cubes, including economically valuable fish such as red grouper, rabbitfish, snapper, and yellowtail.

“What began as a college hobby at IPB (Bogor Agricultural Institute) has become a full-time role. Diving isn’t just work, it’s a personal release,” Prasari said in an interview. Since joining Harita Nickel in 2022, she has taken part in seawater sampling, underwater documentation, and even the installation of the Reef Cubes themselves. “It’s physically demanding, but I’m proud to help protect the seam,” she added.&nbsp;

Monitoring is conducted weekly, not just by internal staff but also by independent third parties to ensure objective and transparent data. One of the most critical components of this work is underwater documentation, a task Prasari often handles solo.

Harita Nickel Strengthens Efforts to Protect Obi Sea with Artificial Coral Reef Program

Harita Nickel remains committed to sustainability across all operations amid growing global demand for responsible mining practices. One of its main goals is to use Processing Residue (SHP) from the pyrometallurgical smelting process, specifically nickel slag, which is now used as a soil improver for reclaiming mined land.
As a form of SHP, nickel slag previously required specialized management. However, Harita Nickel’s Environment and Business Improvement Team has developed an innovative approach to repurpose it as a valuable material for sustainable land reclamation. Nickel slag, which has a lot of silica, magnesium, and essential minerals, was mainly used for building infrastructure like concrete blocks, tetrapods, and roads. However, recent studies have demonstrated its ability to enhance soil structure and increase the availability of nutrients for plants.

Trials have demonstrated that nickel slag is effective as a plant nutrient source and improves soil structure, particularly in post-mining areas. In addition to reducing waste, this new idea helps ecosystems recover, makes it easier for reclamation plants like Sengon and Cajuput trees to grow, and makes the best use of land mined for productive and long-term uses.

Sustainable Innovation: Harita Nickel Utilizes Nickel Slag to Improve Soil Quality in Reclamation Areas

Throughout the BK3N 2025 commemoration, which was held on January 12-February 12, Harita Nickel held various activities to increase awareness of occupational safety and health across its business units. Knowledge sharing sessions were conducted to increase employees' capacity and competence in OSH. While the competition session, aimed at encouraging worker involvement in building a safety culture, including through K3 video and poster competitions, safety driving, and emergency handling simulations.&nbsp;
As part of its corporate social responsibility, Harita Nickel also organized a community service program in Soligi Village. The activities included free health checks for school students and the elderly, as well as health and safety education in everyday life.&nbsp;

Rofiek further said that Harita Nickel has a big challenge this year to complete the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) audit, a voluntary assessment system to evaluate industrial-scale mines based on sustainability aspects, which includes occupational safety aspects.&nbsp;

As stated directly by IRMA Executive Director, Aimee Boulanger, “By volunteering its mining operations to be independently audited against the world's most stringent global mining standards, Harita Nickel sets an example of the unprecedented transparency of mining operations in Indonesia".
Septian Hario Seto, Deputy of Indonesia's Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, said Harita Nickel's commitment to undergo a rigorous IRMA audit reflects the company's dedication to responsible mining practices. “This effort underscores the importance of aligning national industrialization with global standards, ensuring long-term benefits for our communities and environment," said Septian Hario Seto, specifically commending Harita Nickel for supporting the government's vision for a sustainable mining and downstream sector.&nbsp;
President Director of Harita Nickel, Roy Arman Arfandy, said that the IRMA audit is important to affirm Harita Nickel's commitment to responsible mining practices, which protect the safety of workers, environment and communities. No less important, this audit is to assure consumers that Harita Nickel products meet internationally recognized sustainability standards.&nbsp;
By undergoing this IRMA audit, Roy emphasized, Harita Nickel is committed to aligning its operations with best practices and identifying room for continuous improvement with affected stakeholders and relevant rights holders.

This award recognized the company's commitment in implementing sustainable environmental management.
The award was presented at the Proper 2024 Environmental Award held at Sasono Langen Budoyo, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Jakarta, on Monday (24/2/2025).&nbsp;
Harita Nickel's Health and Safety Environment Director, Tonny Gultom, said Harita Nickel as an integrated nickel mining and processing technology company, always prioritizes sustainable principles in all aspects of its operations on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. This commitment aims to provide added value for the company and sustainability for the surrounding environment.

Tonny mentioned a number of Harita Nickel's achievements in environmental management, including its successful post-mining reclamation program covering ± 231.53 hectares by 2024. Some of the former mining land, he added, is currently covered with plants and inhabited by various types of endemic animals from North Maluku.&nbsp;
Based on the results of biodiversity monitoring conducted by an independent third party, it was found that the flora and fauna ecosystem in the operational area of Harita Nickel remains well-preserved. From the 2024 monitoring results, a total of 10 plant species were recorded as being used in the reclamation area, and 8 plant species were identified in the Obi Industrial Area, consisting of secondary forests and shrubs, including Red Jabon, Kayu Putih, Bintangur, and Mahogany.
Meanwhile, for wildlife species classified within the taxa of mammals, bird populations, herpetofauna, and insects show a stable trend. This includes several endemic species unique to the Maluku Islands, such as the Green Dobson (Dobsonia viridis) and the Halmahera Cicadabird (Lalage aurea).
Under the insect category, the study recorded 28 dragonfly species from 8 families and 46 butterfly species from 4 families. The presence of dragonflies and butterflies indicates that the quality of the environment is maintained.
"We have also succeeded in revitalizing the nursery this year, by increasing the capacity of our land area for nurseries equipped with modern facilities,” he added. The nursery facility, named Loji Central Nursery, has an area of ± 2.8 hectares and a capacity of ± 400,000 seedlings. This increase in nursery capacity is expected to meet the growing demand for seedlings to support the post-mining reclamation program.

Meanwhile, Head of Mining Engineering of PT Gane Permai Sentosa, Ngainur Rofiek, said that this year's Blue Proper award from the Ministry of Environment is the second time for the company after previously receiving the same predicate for the 2021-2022 period. According to him, the success in maintaining this achievement shows the company's consistency in implementing Good Mining Practices, including technical aspects, work safety and environmental management.&nbsp;
“Of course we will not stop here. This achievement is a motivation for us to further improve the company's performance. In the future, it is not limited to fulfilling regulations, but also making sustainable innovations,” he concluded.&nbsp;
Proper 2024 was participated by 4,495 companies from various sectors. As a result of the performance evaluation, the level of company compliance during the 2023-2024 period amounted to 2,961 compliant companies, 1,329 non-compliant companies, and 205 companies not yet operating. In the non-compliant group, there are 16 companies with black status –the lowest level for companies that are considered to have committed environmental damage. Whereas in Proper 2023 there were no black status companies, then this became a special concern for the government to make Proper mandatory starting in 2025.&nbsp;

Harita Nickel Achieved Blue Proper Award from the Ministry of Environment

Demonstrating a commitment to climate change awareness and carbon footprint reduction, Harita Nickel participated in the global Earth Hour initiative by simultaneously turning off lights and electrical devices for one hour in Ternate City and Obi Island Site on March 22.
In Ternate City, Harita Nickel held an Earth Hour event in the courtyard of the Ternate Mayor's Office. The company collaborated with a number of parties, including KATAM (Mining Advocacy Consortium) North Maluku, Obi Student Association Movement, and was fully supported by the Ternate City Government.&nbsp;

Earth Hour, which was originally planned to take place at the Ternate Landmark, had to be moved to the Mayor's Office yard due to heavy rain. Nevertheless, attendees' enthusiasm remained high, with the atmosphere getting more solemn when candles were lit to replace the lights.

The Mayor of Ternate, M. Tauhid Soleman, who was present in person said that Earth Hour is not just an action to turn off the lights, but also a symbol of concern for the future of our earth. “This movement is not just about turning off the lights for one hour, but a sign of our concern for the environment and the sustainability of life for future generations,” he said.

Furthermore, he said that Ternate has a big responsibility in maintaining the balance between modernization and nature preservation. The action of turning off the lights, he added, is a reflection of local wisdom that has been passed down from generation to generation, such as the Ela-Ela Night tradition that is carried out to ask for safety for the community.

On this occasion, Tauhid also appreciated Harita Nickel's initiative to support an environmental awareness movement. Previously, Harita Nickel had given one unit of garbage truck to the Ternate City Government, as part of its contribution to cleanliness and environmental management.
“On behalf of the government and local people of Ternate, we would like to thank Harita Nickel for their dedication and support. May this act of kindness not stop here, but continue for the sustainability of our environment,” he said.

Meanwhile, Harita Nickel through its business units also held Earth Hour with a one-hour power outage. Harita employees at Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP) turned off the lights and electrical devices in the office area. While in Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), power outages were carried out in the Living Quarter and Jetty Persada 4 areas at 21.00-20.00 Indonesian Eastern Time.

Director of Health & Safety Environment Harita Nickel, Tonny Gultom, said Harita Nickel's involvement in the Earth Hour movement as a reflection of the company's commitment to tackling global warming and reducing carbon footprint. According to him, the spirit of energy saving is not only done at this moment, but has become the culture of Harita employees in everyday life.&nbsp;

“The spirit of Earth Hour does not stop only in the action of turning off the electricity for one hour, but also continues with energy saving actions carried out at all times,” he said, inviting all Harita employees to save electricity, and also other energy sources such as water, wisely.&nbsp;

On a larger scale, Harita Nickel's commitment to support the reduction of carbon emissions has been proven through a mangrove rehabilitation program with a total area of 23.04 hectares and 67,691 seedlings that have been planted. In addition, the company is currently in the process of building a solar power plant (PLTS) with a capacity of 300 Megawatt peak (MWp) in the integrated nickel processing area of Obi Island, South Halmahera.These steps reflect the company's ongoing dedication to fostering a more sustainable future.

Harita Nickel Supports Carbon Reduction through Earth Hour Action in Obi and Ternate

Harita Nickel commemorates National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) 2025 by organizing waste management socialization to students of Loji Permai Junior High School and Tunas Muda High School in Kawasi Village, Obi District, South Halmahera, North Maluku. This socialization aims to invite students to take real action in keeping the school environment clean.
During the event, students were introduced on how to process waste using the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle method or known as the 3Rs. Millah Hudiyah Daeng Barang, Environmental Foreman Compliance, explained that waste management is important to reduce adverse impacts on the environment. Waste that is not managed properly, she said, can cause health problems, pollute the environment and even cause casualties.

“The landslide at the Leuwigajah landfill in Cimahi, West Java, caused many houses to be buried by garbage and hundreds of people died,” said Mila, after playing a video recording of the unfortunate event twenty years ago, which is commemorated as National Waste Awareness Day every February 21.

Mila further explained that the first step needed to be taken in managing waste is to sort waste according to its type, namely inorganic waste, Toxic and Hazardous Materials (B3) and organic waste.

Not stopping at theory, the students were also invited to take action to clean up waste in the school environment. Each student was seen picking up trash and putting it in a plastic bag. Before being taken to a temporary shelter, the waste was first sorted according to their respective categories.

Chairperson of the student council of Tunas Muda Kawasi High School, Crisa Siar, said that keeping the school environment clean is very important so that students can avoid the threat of disease. In addition, a clean school environment makes the view more beautiful and comfortable.

“I invite all of my friends to maintain a clean school environment and familiarize ourselves with a healthy lifestyle, by disposing of garbage in its place,” she said.

Satrio, a student of Loji Permai Kawasi Junior High School, echoed the same sentiment. According to him, he learned the importance of maintaining cleanliness from this event. He also admitted that he was interested in participating in training on processing waste into handicraft products, which will be held in the next session.

The head of Tunas Muda Kawasi High School, Obet Siar, asked students to follow the entire series of HPSN 2025 activities and apply the knowledge gained in their daily lives. Starting from throwing garbage in its place, reducing plastic waste by reusing items that can still be utilized.

Meanwhile, Community Development Manager of Harita Nickel, Ifan Farianda said HPSN 2025 with the theme “Collaboration for Clean Indonesia” is part of the Harita Teaching program which aims to instill a culture of clean living among students. The activity will continue with the practice of sorting waste, then processing waste into handicraft products whose results will be exhibited on March 10.

“Through the 3R movement in this HPSN series, we invite students to take concrete action in keeping their school environment clean. It is hoped that it will not stop at this event, but will be embedded and become a culture in the daily lives of the students,” he concluded.
