Harita Nickel, through its business units operating on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku, marked National Occupational Health and Safety (K3) Month 2025 with a strong emphasis on safety culture. Under the theme #SatuHaritaSalingMenjaga, Harita Nickel reaffirmed its shared commitment to a consistent K3 culture across all workplaces.
The commemoration of National Occupational Health and Safety (K3) Month began with a General Safety Talk and an Opening Ceremony attended by all Harita Nickel and Lygend Resources business units on Obi Island. During the ceremony, participants collectively recited a safety pledge emphasizing the principle of Zero Lost Time Injury (Zero LTI), followed by the signing of a joint commitment to workplace safety.

In his address, Primus Priyanto, Chief of Mine Technical (Kepala Teknik Tambang) of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, emphasized that OHS is a collective responsibility. He reminded that no one wants to experience a workplace accident, nor do they want their colleagues to be harmed. He encouraged all Harita personnel to foster a culture of mutual care and vigilance in every aspect of their work.

The National K3 Month observance began with a General Safety Talk and an Opening Ceremony attended by all Harita Nickel and Lygend Resources business units on Obi Island. During the ceremony, participants collectively recited a safety pledge, emphasizing the principle of Zero Lost Time Injury (Zero LTI). This was followed by the signing of a joint commitment to uphold safety standards.

“Do not hesitate to remind colleagues if you notice Unsafe Actions (TTA) or Unsafe Conditions (KTA). However, reminders should be communicated respectfully, and those being reminded must recognize their responsibility in maintaining workplace safety,” he stated.

With the theme “Strengthening Human Resource Capacity to Support the Implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (SMK3) for Increased Productivity,” Harita Nickel highlights two key focus areas: Human Resource Capacity and the Mining Safety Management System (SMKP).

Primus highlighted seven key elements that serve as benchmarks for the successful implementation of the Mining Safety Management System (SMKP): Policy, Planning, Personnel and Organization, Implementation, Evaluation and Follow-up, Documentation, and Management Review.

The question is: How can we enhance our individual OHS capacity to contribute effectively to the continuous improvement of SMKP within the company?

He outlined seven key actions to be taken: First, ensure that all employees, from the foreman level and above, have completed OHS training. Second, all employees should be involved in the development of business processes. Third, ensure that every employee consistently understands and follows procedures. Fourth, ensure that employees apply the training materials they have learned. Fifth, supervisors must be willing and capable of mentoring their teams. Sixth, implement internal department rotations. Finally, consistently foster a culture of mutual care and support.

Echoing this perspective, Dian Kristanto, Manager of Technical Support at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) and PT Obi Nickel Cobalt (ONC), emphasized that the success of SMK3 implementation requires strong commitment and active participation from all levels of the organization, including every individual employee.

“Without active participation from all elements of the organization, an effective OHS Management System cannot be fully realized. Therefore, we must strengthen our human resource capacity to support better SMK3 implementation in all our operational activities,” he stated.

To make this annual event even more engaging, each business unit will organize a variety of activities leading up to the closing ceremony on February 12. These include sports competitions, K3 campaign video and poster contests, first aid training (P3K), and seminars.

Beyond internal initiatives, Harita Nickel and Lygend Resources partnership units have also extended safety awareness efforts to the local community. This year’s outreach program took place in Soligi Village, engaging students and housewives in discussions on the importance of safety. “We hope this initiative brings a positive impact, particularly in raising community awareness of potential hazards in their surroundings,” said Haryadi Ilyas, Chairman of the Organizing Committee.

Through the #SatuHaritaSalingMenjaga campaign, Harita Nickel invites all employees and community members to prioritize safety in the workplace and daily life. With a spirit of collaboration, we can foster a safer, more productive, and sustainable work culture.

National OHS Month 2025: #SatuHaritaSalingMenjaga Resonates at the Obi Site

In spite of the hustle and bustle of nickel mining and downstreaming activities on Obi Island, Harita Nickel strives to preserve the environment around its operations. Obi waters, which are directly adjacent to the company's operations are no exception. This is what Aldico Satria Ganesa, Harita Nickel's Marine Ecology Foreman, who is at the forefront of preserving Obi's aquatic ecosystem, is doing.
Together with his colleagues at the Environmental Marine division, he co-authored a scientific journal titled “Coral Recruitment Enhancement in Fish Shelter Media Composed of Fly Ash and Nickel Slag on Obi Island, South Halmahera.” This publication delves into the innovative use of reef cubes&mdash;specially engineered structures made from fly ash and nickel slag&mdash;that have been strategically introduced into the vibrant marine ecosystem of Obi Island. These reef cubes serve a dual purpose: providing safe havens for fish while fostering the growth of new coral reefs, a vital step toward rejuvenating the island's underwater biodiversity.

“We’re turning waste into wonder. By using fly ash and nickel slag&mdash;two byproducts of nickel production&mdash;we create reef cubes rich in Calcium Oxide (CaO), Magnesium Oxide (MgO), and Silica (SiO2). These compounds are the building blocks of calcification, the natural process that forms calcium minerals essential for coral reef growth. It’s a perfect blend of science and sustainability, giving marine ecosystems a chance to thrive,” Dico explained.&nbsp;

Working on this project since 2021, Harita Nickel's Marine Team has placed 1.871 reef cubes and discovered various types of corals with heights ranging from 2.41 to 12.90 cm in the Atol HJF reef cubes area and Pasturi Island. Several genera such as Acropora, Isopora, Pocillopora, Millepora, and Porites have shown significant growth. Not only that, monitoring over the past two years has recorded the presence of 24 families of fish around the reef cubes, with the Pomacentridae family accounting for 53% of the total observations, followed by Acanthuridae species and Abudefduf vaigiensis with fish sizes ranging from 0-5 cm and 16-20 cm.

"It's always enjoyable to monitor the coral reefs on Obi Island because we always find diverse marine life around the reef cubes. This is also a form of Harita Nickel's ESG commitment to maintaining the environmental ecosystem, especially the marine ecosystem, in good condition," he added.

In addition to monitoring coral reefs and other marine life around the reef cubes, a Marine Ecologist is also responsible for monitoring water quality to ensure it meets government standards, as well as monitoring coastal ecosystems such as mangroves.

"The mangrove rehabilitation program, which started in 2021, is equally impressive. We’ve already partnered with Khairun University to plant 71,466 mangrove seedlings in an area of 23.90 hectares. The planting locations are in several points: Soligi, Belang-Belang, Awanggoa, and Kayoa," said Aldico enthusiastically.

For Aldico, working as a Marine Ecology Foreman is a highly enjoyable experience, it feels like having an office in the ocean. Additionally, he often encounters schools of dolphins while monitoring the coral reefs, which serves as an indicator that the marine ecosystem in Harita Nickel's operational area is well preserved.

Aldico and his team's efforts prove that the mining industry, especially at Harita Nickel, is one that takes responsibility for its environment. The reef cubes and mangrove programs are clear examples of how technology and innovation can align with nature conservation.

Meet Aldico Satria Ganesa: Exploring the Vital Role of Reef Cubes and Marine Conservation Initiatives on Obi Island

Harita Nickel continues to innovate to provide the best services for its employees. To meet their needs, this sustainable integrated nickel processing company operating on Obi Island has launched another Foodmart shopping center at its worksite. Impressively, this retail facility is now the largest shopping center in any mining area in Indonesia.
Located within the residential area of PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) employees, the Foodmart covers approximately 1,500 square meters. It offers a wide variety of products, including fresh vegetables and fruits, freshly baked bread, snacks, cooking ingredients, kitchenware, and other daily necessities, all aimed at enhancing the quality of life for Harita Nickel employees while working on-site.

Deputy Head of Technical Support, Amiruddin, representing the management of Harita Nickel's business units HJF, PT Karunia Permai Sentosa (KPS), and PT Obi Sinar Timur (OST), highlighted that this impressive second Foodmart building on Obi Island was constructed using repurposed shipping containers, reflecting the company's commitment to environmental sustainability.

"We want to prove that the spirit of environmental sustainability is embedded in Harita Nickel's mining operations by utilizing recycled materials such as used containers," Amiruddin added.

In his closing remarks, Amiruddin expressed his hope that the shopping center would also collaborate with the surrounding community, particularly Harita Nickel’s fostered micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), enabling them to market their products. He also urged the management team to ensure the continuity of the supply chain to consistently meet employees' needs.

Industrial Relations/Employee Relations Manager Harita Nickel, Taufik Setiaji, expressed his appreciation for the opening of the second Foodmart store at the Obi Island site.

“We are very grateful for the support from Foodmart management. With this shopping market, employees can experience a shopping experience similar to what they would find in a big city. We hope that this second Foodmart will provide excellent service by offering high-quality products,” Taufik stated.

Taufik also mentioned that the facility would soon feature a restaurant and coffee shop on the second floor, providing a new recreational spot for employees. He emphasized that these amenities are expected to bring added comfort to employees working long shifts of 10 to 12 hours per day in a remote area far from their families.

The grand opening of Foodmart HJF Obi was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the traditional cutting of tumpeng by attending management representatives. The ceremony concluded with the reading of a pledge by Foodmart employees to provide the best service possible. Following the opening, all employees were invited to enter and start shopping.

Christoforus Nanda Rahardian, a representative of Harita Nickel’s Industrial Relations/Employee Relations division, could not hide his excitement about the new facility.

“This Foodmart really helps us. It has a complete selection of goods at affordable prices. Shopping has now become more convenient and comfortable,” he shared enthusiastically.

Second Foodmart at Obi Site, The Largest in Indonesia’s Mining Area!

The New Year 2025 was celebrated by Harita employees at the Obi Island Site with great joy and happiness. Everyone was immersed in the joy of leaving the year 2024 with all the milestones achieved. At the same time, everyone welcomed 2025 with new optimism and enthusiasm.
At the end of 2024 that night, all Harita Nickel business units at Obi held a celebration of the New Year 2025. Various events were held to enliven the New Year's Eve, which was celebrated in the spirit of togetherness as part of the Harita Nickel family.
Started with the business units that operate mining, including PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) and PT Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS). Under the theme Vibra Nusantara, Loji Soundfest 2024 presents a different atmosphere from previous years. This year’s event combines contemporary music performances with traditional arts from North Maluku. A glorious entertainment stage, but still not leaving its cultural roots behind!

The atmosphere was lightened when guest star rapper President Tidore performed with his hiphop music along with traditional dance. This was then followed by the performance of Alan Darmawan, singer of the mandatory mining workers' song “100 Million”, whose lyrics were modified from “Tambang Kao Malifut” to “Tambang Obi Kawasi”, inviting everyone to dance along to the rhythm of wayase. Suddenly, the green field of Nirwana was filled with a crowd of Insan Harita who melted in joy under the spotlight of flickering lights and soaring music.
 
New Year's Eve festivities were also held at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) and PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), where the entertainment stages became a gathering point for employees to celebrate the new year with their coworkers on site.
 
Saifullah Nijar, Chairman of the Loji Soundfest 2024 Committee, said the Vibra Nusantara theme promoted this year carries the spirit that differences are not a barrier to collaboration - the main theme of Harita Nickel in 2025. Instead, the cultural diversity of each Harita employee, who comes from various regions in Indonesia, becomes an asset to realize a shared dream, which is to advance the company.
 
“Loji Soundfest is a way of expressing our gratitude for having made it through 2024 with various satisfying achievements. As mentioned by the management, production in 2024 can even exceed the target, and also other achievements,” said Gus Ipul, Saifullah Nijar's close nickname.
 
“Of course, we will not just stop here. Moreover, many challenges await us in 2025. One of them is to welcome the implementation of IRMA standards in all our operational activities at site. All of this requires cooperation and collaboration from all stakeholders,” he said, optimistic that the challenges ahead can be addressed even better thanks to solid team collaboration.

The initiative of Insan Harita in each business unit to hold New Year's celebration activities received appreciation from the management. Deputy Head of Technical Support Department of OST, Amiruddin, in his remarks said that the New Year's welcoming event, which was packed with nuances of joy and togetherness, was part of the implementation of HARITA's Core Values. He hopes that employees can continue to improve their capacity and more importantly, work with a safe and comfortable working environment. Amir also specifically appreciated the solid partnership with Lygend Resources, which has jointly realized the mandate of nickel downstream from the Indonesian government.
 
“Harita Nickel's partnership with Lygend Resouces is the cooperation of two friendly countries in realizing the mandate of the Indonesian government for nickel downstream,” he said, adding 'One of the proud achievements in 2024, for example from the production department was able to exceed the target, an additional 2 HJF lines and 1 line for KPS,' and invited all employees to present more improvements in 2025 and the coming years.”

Insan Harita Welcomes 2025 with New Hope and Optimism

On the long journey to the Obi site, Bacan Island may not be the first destination that comes to mind for Harita Nickel employees. However, for Bahtiar, a member of the Environment Department of PT Dharma Cipta Mulia (DCM), one of Harita Nickel's business units operating on Obi Island, the journey back to the site was an opportunity to uncover one of the hidden treasures around their workplace.
“Before getting back to the Obi site, let's take a walk!” said Bahtiar excitedly, after a long and tiring journey from Pasuruan, East Java. With assignments lasting up to 10 weeks, many of Harita's people feel the need to refresh their minds and bodies before returning to their work routines. And that was the reason behind Bahtiar's invitation to explore Sibela Beach.

The beach, located 18 kilometers from the center of Labuha City, is known for its stunning natural beauty. The soft white sand stretches out, as if inviting anyone to walk barefoot and feel the warm touch of sand grains on the soles of their feet. The calm waves caress the beach, providing a natural rhythm that soothes the soul. The sea water is clear blue, so clear that the bottom is clearly visible, reflecting the glittering sunlight like a jewel in the middle of the ocean.
 
While the sun shines, the coastal panorama offers more than just visual beauty. From the jetty, the hills of Bacan Island are silhouetted against the bright tosca green sea - a sight rarely seen in urban areas.
 
“This beach is like a hidden gem for us,” says Bahtiar, gazing at the beauty unfolding before them. “Here, we can do snorkeling and enjoy the amazing colors of the coral reefs under the sea.”
 
As the clock strikes noon, my stomach begins to cry out for attention. Sibela Beach offers not only natural beauty, but also appetizing local cuisine. The food menu here is relatively affordable, ranging from fried bananas, grilled fish, to young coconut ice that is perfect for quenching thirst.

“I think we've found more than just a transit point today,” Bahtiar said in a soft tone, looking at his fellow travelers. They smiled as they gazed at the sandy expanse of Sibela Beach. “It's really beautiful. I feel like I want to stay here for a long time and I'm too lazy to go back to Obi,” said one of Bahtiar's friends, which was greeted with laughter from all of them.
 
Their moment together at Sibela Beach was a memorable one. With hearts full of beautiful memories, they returned to Labuha with plans to share their experience with other Insan Harita. Sibela Beach is not just a hidden beach on Bacan Island, but a favorite destination for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty.
 
However, Bahtiar also reminded the importance of preserving the environment. “We must remember to maintain the beauty of this beach environment by not littering, especially into the sea,” he said. As American environmental researcher John Muir said: take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time.

The Beauty of Sibela Beach, a Hidden Paradise on Bacan Island

The Harita Continuous Improvement (HCI) program, themed “One Harita, One Creation, One Vision”, has entered its implementation phase. Innovative ideas proposed by participants whose proposals passed the selection process are now being tested for feasibility in the field before being presented to the judges.
Gatra Pinem, Business Control Improvement Manager at Harita Nickel and the program coordinator, stated that the implementation phase involves 36 participants whose proposals were selected at the business unit level.
 
The proposals were grouped into four clusters: PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP); PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP); a combined cluster of PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), PT Obi Nickel Cobalt (ONC), and PT Dharma Cipta Mulia (DCM); and another combined cluster of PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), PT Karunia Permai Sentosa (KPS), and PT Obi Sinar Timur (OST).
 
During the implementation phase, genba observation, or direct field observation, is conducted. Facilitators from each business unit support participants in implementing their innovative ideas by observing the locations or subjects involved in their proposals. The observation process covers the innovation workflow, the tools utilized, and the results achieved.
 
“This genba observation also serves to provide feedback and refine the outputs before each participant presents their proposals to the judges in November,” Gatra explained.
 
In TBP, facilitators visited the nickel ore sample testing laboratory to observe the implementation of two proposals: “Efficiency Through Duplication in Production Sample Analysis Using WD-XRF in 2024” and “Optimization of ED-XRF Epsilon 4 Instruments for Nickel Ore Sample Analysis”. Facilitators also observed a project at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) titled “Utilizing Plastic Waste as Biofilter Media”.
 
“Nine proposals from TBP advanced to the implementation phase. Our role as facilitators is to assist participants from brainstorming their proposals to field implementation and preparation for presentations,” said Reza Febri, an HCI facilitator at TBP.
 
Similar genba observations have also been conducted at other business units. By the second week of September 2024, all units had completed their field observations and participant mentoring for HCI.
 
Launched in early June 2024, the HCI program aims to capture innovative ideas from Harita employees. These innovations target improving productivity, cost efficiency, performance in health and safety, and contributing to sustainable environmental management practices.
 
Although it is the first time HCI has been conducted, the program has received an overwhelmingly positive response from Harita employees. A total of 110 proposals were submitted from various business units, with 36 making it to the implementation stage. These proposals will proceed to the presentation phase, where the top five will be selected.
 
The program will culminate in a competition among the first-place winners from each business unit to determine the overall champion. The final event is scheduled for January-February 2025.
 
“HCI is a highly positive initiative as it provides employees with a platform to innovate and compete in contributing their best to the company,” remarked Asrar Kurniawan, a team leader from TBP and an HCI participant.

Ahead of Presentations, HCI Participants Test the Practicality of Their Innovative Ideas

PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP) once again hosted its annual carnival in celebration of Indonesia's 79th Independence Day. Themed “A New Nusantara, A Progressive Indonesia”, the third installment of this highly anticipated event delivered an even more vibrant and colorful spectacle than previous years.
The event took place on Sunday morning, September 1, 2024, at the football field within the TBP office and residential area in Nirwana. A total of 17 teams, representing various departments and contractors, showcased their creativity through artistic performances, complemented by costumes and ornaments that highlighted the unique cultural identity of Indonesia's diverse regions.

The carnival parade commenced at the football field, where each team performed in front of the panel of judges. The Preparations & Lab Department opened the event with a stunning display inspired by traditional wayang (shadow puppetry). The Plant Department concluded the performances with a captivating narrative on the spirit of post-independence struggles and nation-building.

Following a thorough evaluation, the judges awarded the Production Department first place for their compelling presentation of traditional dances from multiple regions, complete with authentic costumes. The HRGA Department secured second place with their intricate Ogoh-ogoh statue, an iconic element of Balinese culture, while the Management Team earned third place with a tribute to Javanese artistry.

Ayrthon Christovallen Blasius Mongan, a member of the Production Department's winning team, shared his excitement about the victory. “We showcased dances from various regions with costumes that truly embodied their cultural significance. Preparations included daily practice sessions after work and collaborative efforts to acquire the costumes, some of which were specially ordered or brought by colleagues returning from leave,” he explained.

Younsel Evand Roos, Operational Director of PT TBP, who also participated in the Management Team's presentation, emphasized the importance of such events in fostering camaraderie and cultural preservation. “This annual carnival is not just a creative outlet; it also strengthens team spirit and highlights the rich cultural tapestry of Indonesia,” he remarked.

The TBP Carnival 2024 served as the grand finale to the series of events commemorating Indonesia’s Independence Day, organized by PT TBP and PT Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS), a subsidiary of Harita Nickel. Leading up to the carnival, employees participated in a variety of competitions, including sports such as badminton, futsal, and sepak takraw, as well as artistic events like dance battles and the highly anticipated TBP Idol singing competition.

This year’s carnival successfully combined the celebration of Indonesian cultural heritage with a platform for employee creativity and engagement, reaffirming the company's commitment to fostering unity and cultural appreciation within its workforce.

TBP Carnival 2024: Advancing with the Spirit of Indonesian Culture

Harita Nickel's Community Development team, in collaboration with Harita Saruma, launched the North Maluku Spice Processing Product (Propala) initiative in late November 2024. This collaboration aims to contribute to sustainable development (SDGs) in Obi Island, North Maluku, by empowering local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Ifan Farianda, Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel, emphasized the importance of employee involvement in the company’s Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM). One of the ways is by promoting the products of company-supported MSMEs, particularly among employees and the general public.
 
“Propala is packaged as a unique souvenir from North Maluku, making it an excellent gift for employees returning home for vacation,” Ifan said, showcasing the Propala packaging with the tagline, “Oleh-Oleh Penuh Cinta, dari Obi untuk Indonesia” (Gifts Full of Love, from Obi for Indonesia).
 
The Propala initiative originated from Harita Nickel’s desire to empower housewives in the new Kawasi Village settlement by processing nutmeg-based products. Previously, only nutmeg seeds were utilized, leaving the fruit’s flesh discarded. Now, the fruit flesh is processed into a variety of food and beverages, adding value to this regional commodity.
Harita Saruma is an internal company program designed to help Harita Nickel employees&mdash;especially younger ones&mdash;gain insight into the company’s operations from upstream to downstream, including its contributions to local communities.
“This Propala launch with Harita Saruma embodies one of our core values: Teamwork. Employees collaborate to support the company’s development and empowerment initiatives,” Ifan explained.
 
The event began with a presentation from Harita Nickel’s Community Development team, which outlined the Propala initiative and the broader PPM program. The session was attended by Propala members and 16 Harita Saruma participants from various departments and business units.
 
Following the presentation, participants visited local nutmeg plantations located 15 minutes from the new settlement. Here, they learned about the harvesting process, guided by Propala members.
 
“If the skin starts to split like this, it means it’s ripe,” explained Lenny Jouronga, a Propala member, while showing a ripe nutmeg fruit. “The flesh will also feel softer, not too hard. If it’s still hard, it’s not ready yet,” she added.

The Propala women taught participants how to select ripe nutmeg fruit while sharing stories about their harvesting experiences. The Harita Saruma participants enthusiastically joined the harvest, paying close attention to the women’s tips.
 
After harvesting, participants visited the Propala production house, where they were welcomed by an array of neatly packaged nutmeg-based products such as candy, dodol (traditional toffee-like sweets), syrup, and nutmeg juice. The participants eagerly sampled these delicacies.
 
“The nutmeg juice is so refreshing, especially with ice on a hot day,” remarked Muhamad Asep Falahudin from Harita Nickel’s Technical Support department. “The taste is unique&mdash;sweet and tangy with a distinct nutmeg flavor. It’s perfect for quenching thirst in the heat!”
 
Eresia Makanaung, a laboratory staff member from PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, expressed her amazement at the dodol. “I grew up in West Halmahera and often harvested nutmeg at my grandmother’s farm, but we only used the seeds. I never knew the flesh could be turned into dodol,” she said.
 
“The taste is delightful&mdash;not overly sweet, with the signature nutmeg aroma. I’m amazed that something often discarded can become such a valuable product,” Eresia added.
 
The Harita Saruma participants left the event feeling inspired. Through Propala, they witnessed how local potential could be transformed into high-quality products, boosting the local economy and creating broader market opportunities.
 
This initiative underscores Harita Nickel’s commitment to fostering local entrepreneurship and sustainable development in North Maluku.

Harita Nickel and Harita Saruma Launch Propala to Support Local SMEs

Harita Continuous Improvement (HCI) 2024 has reached a very important milestone. After a long journey, which began with the registration of participants and then continued with a series of selections, now comes the announcement of business unit level champions.
The announcement of the 2024 HCI champions at the business unit level was packaged in an event entitled “HCI Awarding Night 2024” which was held in the Activity Center cinema, PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, on Thursday, December 12, 2024. Present at this event, the HCI champion nominees from each business unit. Also attending were invitations from the management along with the jury and facilitators involved in the selection and mentoring process of HCI participants. 
Harita Nickel Operations Director, Younsel Evand Roos, in his speech said that the spirit of continuous improvement is in line with the company's Core Value of Achievement Oriented. He hopes that every Harita employee can see HCI as an opportunity to accelerate achievement, especially in the area of work they do every day.

“With this continuous improvement, everyone can have the opportunity to advance. If not this year, may it be in the following years. Improvement does not stop at just one moment, but is continuously carried out in every aspect of work,” he said.
Then came the moment that Harita Insan had been waiting for, both those who were present in person and those who watched virtually via live broadcast. Especially the champion nominees, their curiosity was not answered until the names of the champions were announced.
 
The announcement of the champions began with the earliest operating business unit at the Obi Island site, namely PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, which also includes PT Gane Permai Sentosa. Followed by the champion for the PT Megah Surya Pertiwi business unit as the earliest operating smelter. Then PT Halmahera Persada Lygend with two other associated business units, namely PT Obi Nickel Cobalt and PT Dharma Cipta Mulia. Closed with the announcement of the champion for PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel with two other associated business units, namely PT Karunia Permai Sentosa and PT Obi Sinar Timur.
 
The prize award for the fifth to runner-up winners of each business unit was represented by the group leader. Respectively, the fifth and fourth place winners received the same prize of Rp 10 million each, the third place winners received Rp 15 million and the second place winners received Rp 25 million. As for the first place winner, all members of the group went up to the podium to receive a prize of Rp 35 million.
 
Catur Prasetyo, the group leader who was crowned the first winner of HCI 2024 for the PT Halmahera Persada Lygend business unit, briefly shared the contents of his proposal entitled “Energizing GAC Waste to Eco-Efficiency Processing”. Its concept is waste to energy, which is how to utilize waste in the form of Granular Activated Carbon in the production area of the nickel sulfate plant as fuel in the Power Plant.

As an illustration, the collaborative project between the Nickel Sulfate Production Department and the Power Plant has succeeded in reducing the use of coal in the Power Plant by thousands of tons per year and is also able to save billions of rupiah in costs in a year. Waste that has the potential to pollute the environment and even endanger workers if not managed properly, but thanks to the innovations made can actually have a positive impact on the company.
&nbsp;“We are targeting to be in the top three, but we don't expect much to win, because the proposals from other teams are no less interesting. For us, being the first winner is a bonus,” said Chess.
Meanwhile, Asrar Kurniawan, group leader who won first place for the PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk business unit, said that his team gained a lot of positive experiences from their participation in HCI. From this event, he added, he learned how to optimize his work so that it can benefit himself and the company.
 
“We would also like to thank the facilitators who have assisted us from proposal preparation to presentation. In particular to our managers in the Lab and Preparation Department who have provided a lot of support to the team,” he said.
 
Closing the event that night, Harita Nickel's President Director, Roy Arman Arfandy, said that Harita Continous Improvement is not just a competition, but a journey together to bring the company to a better direction. The ultimate goal of HCI is in line with the company's mission, which is to achieve sustainable excellence through improving the quality of human resources and processes. 
“Congratulations to all the winners for their dedication and hard work. We are very proud of these achievements. However, the journey is not over yet. You will represent the business unit to compete in the group level competition, in February 2025,” he concluded.

HCI Awarding Night 2024, Recognizing Innovators at Site Obi

Harita Nickel has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility by implementing best practices throughout its operations on Obi Island. As part of this commitment, the company's Health, Safety & Environment Department partnered with the Disaster Risk Reduction Center of Universitas Indonesia (DRRC UI) to organize the Kawasi Siaga Bencana (Kawasi Disaster Preparedness) program.
The program took place over four days, from December 10–13, 2024, in the newly developed settlement of Kawasi Village. Participants included residents, school students, village officials, and other stakeholders. The event provided training on disaster and earthquake preparedness, including basic firefighting techniques and First Aid (P3K). The program concluded with a tsunami emergency response and evacuation simulation.

Supriyanto Suwarno, Occupational Health and Safety Manager at Harita Nickel, explained that the disaster preparedness training was conducted as a precautionary measure against potential disasters in the company’s operational area. According to a risk assessment conducted by DRRC UI, Kawasi Village is vulnerable to various natural hazards, including earthquakes, strong winds, high waves, floods, and tsunamis.

“This Kawasi Siaga Bencana activity is part of Harita Nickel's commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility. It is an extension of our efforts in Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental Protection (K3LH), which also prioritize community safety around our operational areas,” Suwarno noted.

The program was warmly welcomed by Kawasi residents. Reinhar Siar, Chairperson of Kawasi Village’s Consultative Body (BPD), expressed gratitude for Harita Nickel’s initiative, stating that it greatly supported government efforts to raise awareness about disaster preparedness and management.

“Residents are very pleased to have this opportunity because it makes us more vigilant about potential disasters and teaches us what to do. This training is not just for natural disasters but also for other emergencies that could occur at any time,” said Siar, thanking Harita Nickel and Universitas Indonesia for organizing the event.

The Kawasi Siaga Bencana program involved Harita Nickel’s Emergency Response Team (ERT), which supported the hands-on training sessions and tsunami evacuation simulation. Additionally, medical teams from both the company and local government, Harita Nickel’s Community Relations team, and personnel from the TNI/Polri (Indonesian Armed Forces and Police) participated in the event.

Devi Partina Wardani, coordinator of DRRC UI, emphasized the importance of involving communities and stakeholders in disaster response efforts to minimize casualties during emergencies. “Through theoretical and practical training, as well as simulations, we aim to provide participants with a clear understanding of the necessary steps to take during disasters,” she explained.

The four-day program demonstrated excellent coordination among the participating parties, according to the DRRC UI team. The participants’ enthusiasm was equally notable, as they actively engaged in every session from start to finish.

“We highly appreciate Harita Nickel’s initiative in organizing this event. Hopefully, it serves as a constant reminder for the community, ensuring they know what to do when disaster strikes,” Wardani concluded.
