That morning, dozens of Soligi villagers visited Salam Kawasi, an integrated agricultural learning center established by Harita Nickel for surrounding communities on Obi Island, South Halmahera. Organized by the Community Development team, this Edugathering aimed to share knowledge and practical insights on integrated agriculture directly with residents.
Mohammad Mona Putra, Agriculture & Fishery Superintendent at Harita Nickel, explained that this event specifically invited the Women Farmers Group (KWT) and the Soligi United Fishermen Group (KNSB). Apart from knowledge transfer, the gathering was intended to strengthen relationships between the company and the community, fostering a more solid partnership moving forward.

He highlighted that the company offers numerous opportunities for local communities to fulfill food supply demands for more than 20,000 Harita Nickel employees. Many food needs are currently sourced from outside Obi Island due to limited local suppliers.

Participants toured the five-hectare Salam Kawasi area, seeing the demonstration plots planted with vegetables such as mustard greens, cayenne peppers, and fruits like California papayas and golden melons grown in a greenhouse. The area also features freshwater fish ponds, compost houses, and goat barns.

Guided by Albertus Darukumara and Lukmanul Hakim, facilitators from Harita Nickel's agriculture and fisheries programs, residents enthusiastically engaged in interactive discussions, particularly regarding the transformation of organic waste, such as goat manure and vegetable scraps, into compost to improve soil fertility.

Albertus explained that Salam Kawasi was previously barren, but the integrated farming techniques have significantly improved its fertility. He hoped this model would inspire local villagers to adopt similar practices.

Ibrahim, head of KNSB, said the visit provided valuable insights, particularly on freshwater aquaculture&mdash;a new concept for most fishermen in Obi. Similarly, Nur Kasim, a new KWT member, expressed interest in intensively cultivating her land for horticulture to meet local food needs independently.

Children attending the event also enjoyed learning through play, supervised by Harita Nickel’s education team. “We are grateful for the company's warm welcome. We can learn about agriculture while our children and grandchildren enjoy playing and learning together,” said Nur Kasim.

The Edugathering is part of Harita Nickel's Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) initiative, which fosters local economic independence while preserving the community’s traditional knowledge. Through this approach, Harita Nickel reaffirms its ongoing commitment to delivering sustainable positive impacts for local communities.

Harita Nickel invited Soligi residents to learn integrated agriculture at Salam Kawasi

In collaboration with the South Halmahera Health Office, Harita Nickel recently conducted a public education session focused on preventing infectious diseases in the new settlement of Kawasi Village, Obi Island. The event aimed to raise community awareness about disease prevention and early detection.
A total of 37 community members participated enthusiastically. dr. Muhammad Iqbal Raka, Site Doctor at Harita Nickel, provided comprehensive insights into disease transmission and effective prevention methods and emphasized the importance of regular health screenings. The session also featured a consultation forum, allowing participants to discuss their health concerns openly.

During the educational session, Harita Nickel introduced the ABCDE principles as a prevention strategy, which include Abstinence (refraining from sexual activities outside committed relationships), Be faithful (loyalty to one partner), Condom use (consistent and correct condom use), Drug-free (avoiding drug use), and Education (accurate information and awareness about infectious diseases).

“Proper education and preventive measures are essential to protect yourself and others,” said dr. Raka.

Ifan Farianda, Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel, emphasized the company's ongoing commitment to supporting community health initiatives. “We hope this educational effort helps the community gain greater understanding and take appropriate preventive actions,” he added.

Additionally, Asdiana Saibi, Head of Disease Prevention & Control at the South Halmahera Health Office, highlighted the critical role of public awareness, considering the high incidence of infectious diseases in the region. “Community awareness is key to disease prevention. Through this activity, we hope residents gain valuable knowledge on protecting themselves,” she stated.

Participants also had the opportunity to undergo voluntary and confidential health screenings as part of the initiative, supporting early detection for more effective intervention.

Harita Nickel and South Halmahera Health Office Educate Kawasi Community on Infectious Disease Prevention

Harita Nickel has once again achieved a remarkable milestone, winning a prestigious award at the 10th PR Indonesia Awards (PRIA) 2025, held at Graha Pos Indonesia, Bandung, on Wednesday (February 26). The company secured recognition in the Owned Media – Internal Magazine Subcategory, competing against 581 entries from 209 institutions.
This award underscores Harita Nickel’s commitment to providing informative and inspiring communication platforms for all stakeholders. The Harita Nickel Internal Magazine serves as a key platform for delivering corporate updates, showcasing initiatives, and encouraging creativity among employees.

The award was given for Harita Nickel Magazine Edition III – 2024, themed “Sustainable Downstreaming on Obi Island”, coinciding with the 79th Mining and Energy Day. This edition highlights Harita Nickel’s key achievements, including four awards from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, as well as advancements in operational innovation, workplace safety, and environmental initiatives.

Beyond corporate achievements, Harita Nickel remains dedicated to empowering local communities on Obi Island through various programs. These include the launch of Propala products, which support Kawasi women entrepreneurs, and the Youth Forum: Harita Future Leaders program. Harita Nickel’s Internal Magazine Wins PR Indonesia Award

Harita Nickel commemorates National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) 2025 by organizing waste management socialization to students of Loji Permai Junior High School and Tunas Muda High School in Kawasi Village, Obi District, South Halmahera, North Maluku. This socialization aims to invite students to take real action in keeping the school environment clean.
During the event, students were introduced on how to process waste using the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle method or known as the 3Rs. Millah Hudiyah Daeng Barang, Environmental Foreman Compliance, explained that waste management is important to reduce adverse impacts on the environment. Waste that is not managed properly, she said, can cause health problems, pollute the environment and even cause casualties.

“The landslide at the Leuwigajah landfill in Cimahi, West Java, caused many houses to be buried by garbage and hundreds of people died,” said Mila, after playing a video recording of the unfortunate event twenty years ago, which is commemorated as National Waste Awareness Day every February 21.

Mila further explained that the first step needed to be taken in managing waste is to sort waste according to its type, namely inorganic waste, Toxic and Hazardous Materials (B3) and organic waste.

Not stopping at theory, the students were also invited to take action to clean up waste in the school environment. Each student was seen picking up trash and putting it in a plastic bag. Before being taken to a temporary shelter, the waste was first sorted according to their respective categories.

Chairperson of the student council of Tunas Muda Kawasi High School, Crisa Siar, said that keeping the school environment clean is very important so that students can avoid the threat of disease. In addition, a clean school environment makes the view more beautiful and comfortable.

“I invite all of my friends to maintain a clean school environment and familiarize ourselves with a healthy lifestyle, by disposing of garbage in its place,” she said.

Satrio, a student of Loji Permai Kawasi Junior High School, echoed the same sentiment. According to him, he learned the importance of maintaining cleanliness from this event. He also admitted that he was interested in participating in training on processing waste into handicraft products, which will be held in the next session.

The head of Tunas Muda Kawasi High School, Obet Siar, asked students to follow the entire series of HPSN 2025 activities and apply the knowledge gained in their daily lives. Starting from throwing garbage in its place, reducing plastic waste by reusing items that can still be utilized.

Meanwhile, Community Development Manager of Harita Nickel, Ifan Farianda said HPSN 2025 with the theme “Collaboration for Clean Indonesia” is part of the Harita Teaching program which aims to instill a culture of clean living among students. The activity will continue with the practice of sorting waste, then processing waste into handicraft products whose results will be exhibited on March 10.

“Through the 3R movement in this HPSN series, we invite students to take concrete action in keeping their school environment clean. It is hoped that it will not stop at this event, but will be embedded and become a culture in the daily lives of the students,” he concluded.

You have probably heard that nickel is one of the essential raw materials commonly used in electric vehicle batteries. But what exactly is the function of nickel in nickel batteries? In this article, we will take a closer look – from the basic function of these batteries to the role nickel plays in the process.&nbsp;<h2>How Batteries Work</h2>
A battery is a device that can convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy. Batteries are widely used in mobile electronic equipment such as cellphones, laptops, flashlights, and now in electric vehicles (EV).
Batteries come in a range of shapes, sizes, and raw materials, depending on their power requirements and the devices for which they are intended. In general, batteries consist of one anode (negative pole), one cathode (positive pole), and an electrolyte.
A typical battery’s operational process can be split into two main phases, namely the discharging and the charging phases:<h4>1. Discharging&nbsp;</h4>
When not in use, electrons in the battery are collected at the negative pole (anode), while cations (a positively charged ion) are collected at the positive pole (cathode). When the battery is installed in an electronic device, the electrons will move towards the positive pole (cathode), while the cations simultaneously move towards the negative pole (anode).
During this phase of the process, electrons pass through the circuit of the device you are using, which supplies the device with the electrical charge it needs to function.
<h4>2. Charging</h4>
When there are no more electrons that can be moved from the negative pole (anode) to the positive pole (cathode), the battery can no longer power the electronic device. This is commonly called a "dead battery".
However, in rechargeable batteries, this process can be reversed. When electricity is passed through the battery, the electrons move back through the circuit to the negative pole (anode), while the cations move back to the positive pole (cathode) through the electrolyte. This means the battery can be reused. 
<h2>The Function of Nickel in Batteries</h2>
Now that we understand how batteries work, a question arises: What role does nickel play in this process? Nickel is widely used as a raw material for the positive pole (cathode) of batteries. It is usually combined with other metals such as manganese and cobalt, thereby becoming a nickel, manganese, and cobalt (NMC) battery. This alloy plays a pivotal role in transporting electrons from the negative pole (anode).
So what makes nickel the raw material of choice for battery cathodes? Put simply, nickel has a greater capacity to bond with more cations than other metals, which facilitates more electron movement when the battery is used. This gives nickel batteries the ability to store significantly more energy than equivalent batteries made from alternative materials.
In addition, nickel batteries are also a more popular choice because they tend to have a longer life cycle than other options. Even when their service life has expired they can still be recycled to retrieve the nickel, which can then be processed into new batteries. 
<h2>Harita Nickel’s Role in the EV Battery Ecosystem</h2>
Harita Nickel is the first company in Indonesia that is capable of processing nickel ore into mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP), along with nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate; products that can be processed into electric vehicle batteries.
Harita Nickel currently has six high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) production lines, with a combined production capacity of 120,000 tons of nickel per year. Three of these production lines are operated by PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL), while PT Obi Nickel Cobalt (PT ONC) operates a further three. This makes Harita Nickel the largest nickel sulfate factory in the world.

What is the Function of Nickel in Electric Vehicle Batteries?

Nickel is one of the world’s most essential natural resources. With its ability to resist corrosion and withstand heat, nickel is an essential component in the manufacture of stainless steel. It also has excellent capacity for electrical energy storage, which makes nickel a viable raw material for the manufacture of batteries for electric vehicles (EV).
Indonesia is home to the largest nickel reserves in the world. According to data from the<a href="https://pubs.usgs.gov/periodicals/mcs2024/mcs2024.pdf"> 2024 Mineral Commodity Summaries</a> issued by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Indonesia has nickel reserves of 55 million metric tons. This wealth of resources means Indonesia has the potential to be a major player in the global nickel market, and a driving force in the transition to more sustainable sources of energy.

Indonesia actually constitutes 42.3 percent of the world's total nickel reserves. In second place is Australia, with nickel reserves estimated at around 24 million metric tons. With that in mind, it is essential for us to understand more about nickel, and its potential to be one of Indonesia's major export commodities. 

<h2>What is Nickel?
</h2>
Nickel is a silvery-white, shiny, and corrosion-resistant metallic element, represented in the periodic table by the Ni symbol and with an atomic number of 28. Nickel is the fifth most common metal found in the world, in mineral deposits embedded in the Earth's crust.

Nickel has a number of<a href="https://byjus.com/chemistry/nickel/"> physical and chemical properties</a> that make it especially useful (and relatively sustainable). These properties include:

1. High boiling point (1,453 degrees Celsius) 2. Resistance to corrosion and oxidation 3. Malleability, without compromising durability 4. Magnetism at room temperature 5. Heat resistance 6. Electrical conductivity 7. Can be recycled

Nickel has been around for a long time. It was first recorded in the 1400s, when German miners discovered a reddish-brown substance, which they believed to be a kind of copper ore. However, it transpired that this ‘copper’ was strangely difficult to extract from the ore; a source of frustration that led them to name the material "<a href="https://nickelinstitute.org/en/nickel-applications/history-of-nickel/">kupfernickel</a>", a Saxon word meaning "devil's copper".

It was not until 1751 that a Swedish chemist, Axel Cronstedt, identified nickel as a distinct metal, not copper as was initially believed. Then, in the 19th century, nickel began to grow in popularity as a metal coating or metal alloy because of its strong, rust-resistant, and heat-resistant properties. In 1857, the United States began using nickel in the production of coins.

In 1912, British scientist Harry Brearly created a stainless steel which incorporated a nickel alloy that gave it additional rust-resistant properties. To this day, nickel is most widely used as an alloy in the production of stainless steel.

Research on the use of nickel is still ongoing. Now nickel is also used as a precursor raw material for batteries, because of its capacity for effective and efficient energy storage. Looking to the future, nickel is expected to become even more integral to technological development. 

<h2>The Utilization of Nickel

Nickel is now used as a raw material for electric vehicle batteries.
With its rust- and oxidation-resistant properties, nickel is particularly well-suited to conducting electricity. As a result, <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/media/kabar-obi/highlight/ini-dia-kegunaan-dan-manfaat-nikel-dalam-kehidupan-sehari-hari" target="_blank">nickel has a number of useful applications</a> in daily life. Here are just a few of them:

As mentioned above, nickel is a raw material commonly used in stainless steel; one of the most ubiquitous materials in the world, used in everything from cutlery and cars to surgical implements in the medical sector.
Nickel is perfectly suited to stainless steel because it displays excellent flexibility at both low and high temperatures, especially compared to iron, which is comparatively brittle and prone to failure at low temperatures.

Currently, stainless steel with a nickel alloy dominates 80 percent of the stainless steel market. The two most<a href="https://www.unifiedalloys.com/blog/304-316-stainless#:~:text=Most%20stainless%20steel%20ordered%20around,resistance%20to%20chlorides%20and%20acids."> popular types of stainless steel</a>, namely type 304 and type 316, both contain nickel.

<h5>2. Raw Materials in Batteries
</h5>
Nickel batteries are chosen because of their impressive electrical storage capacity, along with their ability to conduct electricity. As a result, nickel performs brilliantly as a cathode in batteries. Nickel was first used for this purpose back in the 1980s, in nickel cadmium (NiCD) and nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries.

Nickel-based battery technologies continue to evolve. Currently, nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) batteries and nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries, which contain around 80 percent nickel, are the two types of batteries most widely used in electric vehicles.

<h5>3. Electroplating
</h5>
Electroplating is a metal coating process using electric current and certain chemical compounds to create a metal coating. This imbues the surface of a material with the physical and chemical properties of the coating, thereby enabling it to conduct electricity better, or making it more rust resistant.

Nickel is one of the metals often used for this purpose, helping materials become more rust- and wear-resistant, while also giving them a more attractive appearance. This is especially beneficial to the automotive and electronics industries.

Harita Nickel officially concluded the 2025 National Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Month with ceremonies held across its business units on Obi Island on February 12. While the event series has ended, the company’s commitment to workplace safety continues. Harita Nickel remains dedicated to strengthening OHS culture and enhancing safety standards to create a safer and more productive work environment.
Ngainur Rofiek, Head of Mining Engineering at PT Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS), emphasized in his remarks that workplace safety is a shared responsibility. The National OHS Month serves as a key moment for all Insan Harita to enhance their capabilities in supporting the implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (SMK3), known in the mining sector as the Mining Safety Management System (SMKP).

She stressed that implementing SMK3 in the nickel industry is not just a regulatory requirement but also a crucial risk management strategy. She also highlighted that Indonesia’s high disaster risk in industrial zones necessitates comprehensive mitigation strategies to protect workers and ensure operational resilience.

Harita Nickel Concludes 2025 National OHS Month, Reinforces Ongoing Safety Commitment

As part of the 2025 National Occupational Safety and Health Month (Bulan K3/OSH Month), Harita Nickel organized a discussion titled “Disaster Management in the Obi Island Nickel Industry”. The event aligned with this year’s theme, “Strengthening Human Resource Capacity to Support the Implementation of the OSH Management System (SMK3),” reaffirming Harita Nickel’s commitment to safety and operational sustainability in the high-risk mining and smelting industries.
This initiative, spearheaded by Harita Nickel–Lygend Resources business units, featured disaster management expert Prof. Dra. Fatma Lestari, M.Si., Ph.D, who serves as Head of the Disaster Risk Reduction Center (DRRC) at the University of Indonesia and Vice Chair of the National Occupational Safety and Health Council (DK3N). Prof. Fatma highlighted that disaster management is a crucial component of SMK3, as mandated by Government Regulation No. 50/2012.

She emphasized that SMK3 is essential for managing both external risks such as natural disasters and internal risks from industrial operations. The challenge is that 57% of industries in Indonesia are located in areas with moderate disaster risk, while 43% are in high-risk zones. Therefore, understanding potential risks is the first step toward disaster preparedness.

“Indonesia is rich in natural resources, but it also faces high disaster risks. The first thing we need to do is understand the potential risks&mdash;whether they come from natural disasters or from within our operations,“ said Prof. Fatma Lestari. She added that this aligns with the theme of this year’s National OSH Month.

The indicators used in measuring the success of SMK3 implementation include lagging indicators such as the number of work accidents, leading indicators which include training and inspections, and importantly organizational indicators which include the commitment of company management.&nbsp;

“Harita Nickel is already on the right track. In addition to having obtained certification in the field of K3, Harita Nickel also continues to increase the capacity of its employees in the implementation of SMK3,” said Prof. Fatma, while mentioning that the DRRC UI team was involved in the preparation of disaster management studies in Harita Nickel's operational area.

Harita Nickel’s Occupational Health and Safety Manager, Supriyanto Suwarno, stated that the company’s commitment to workplace safety has been recognized by the international certification body SGS Indonesia. “The company’s commitment to safety can only be successful with the support of all Harita employees,” said Supriyanto. Harita Nickel Collaborates with University of Indonesia to Improve Disaster Mitigation in the Nickel Industry

Working in mining was a dream of Alan Darmawan, singer of the song “100 Million,” which is already so familiar to Insan Harita. Even before his fame, he thought that working in a mine meant that a person could have a good life.&nbsp;
"In North Maluku, only those who work in the mines can own expensive items. For example, if we want to get married, the dowry is 100 million. it can only be achieved by those who work in the mines," said Alan Darmawan, during his visit as a guest star of Loji Soundfest 2024, organized by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, on New Year's Eve.

To realize his young dream, Alan had sent job applications to several mining companies. One of his targets was Harita Nickel, an integrated nickel mining and processing technology company operating in Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. Unfortunately, Alan's dream of working in mining was not to be and fate took him to another profession.

"I heard stories that the mine in Obi has excellent facilities. It's different from other mines in North Maluku," he said, recalling why he wanted to work at Harita Nickel. "Now that I've experienced it firsthand, it aligns with the expectations of others. Here, employees get a comfortable mess and working environment. There are sports facilities and entertainment so that employees do not get bored at work, "Alan replied in his own words.&nbsp;

Yes, Alan did not end up working at the mine. He works at the harbor and port authority office in Ternate City. But who would have thought that his work had become an “obligatory song” for mine workers. Alan has received numerous invitations, including those from mining companies, since the song gained popularity on social media in early 2023.&nbsp;

"It turns out that the song relates to many people. Perhaps this is also what makes it viral," he said, adding that from the song, he was contacted by the boss of a mining company who thanked him because of Alan's song. The mine, which was sluggish at that time, had the spirit to rise again. Alan also received appreciation from a mining employee, who claimed to have successfully proposed to his girlfriend because he was motivated by the "100 Million" song.

"People here see mining as something great. Working in a mine is prestigious. Like we want to propose marriage to someone's daughter, working in a mine is already a special status," Alan reiterated.

Similarly, President Tidore, a rapper from the Tidore Islands, North Maluku, who has traveled the world, admitted that he was tempted to work in a mine. “If I hadn't participated in the 25-country exhibition at that time, I might have given my application documents to Harita,” he said, jokingly recalling his regular public transportation driver every time he returned home. “Just now, I met them. I asked them what they do here, and they said they drive vehicles,” he continued, admitting that he was happy to hear that people from his hometown enjoyed working at Harita Nickel.

While Alan's songs are about the dream of being a mineworker with a good life, the lyrics of President Tidore's songs are filled with religious values and social criticism. Despite being known to be critical, this Tidore artist, who has lived in Yogyakarta for a long time, has a positive impression of mining as an asset for regional development.

"Actually, mining is not a new thing, since the sultanate era, there have been mines. As long as it is managed properly, environmental sustainability is maintained, and the community can live more prosperously, the presence of the mine is beneficial," said President Tidore, whose real name is Sadam Abdul Aziz, hoping that Harita Nickel can continue to consistently carry out mining and downstream operations in a sustainable manner.

Closing his visit, Alan Darmawan and President Tidore, who once dreamed of being a mineworker, admitted that they were happy and satisfied to be able to perform in front of Harita employees, especially after both of them could see for themselves and hear firsthand the recognition of Harita employees, who are primarily local residents of North Maluku, getting a comfortable working environment and better welfare.

“Last year, a similar initiative was conducted in Kawasi Village. This year, we are reaching out to Soligi Village to further promote awareness of the critical role that health and safety play in everyday life,” he stated.

The screenings covered blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol checks, along with medical consultations aimed at early detection and prevention of potential health conditions.

Rizky Albizar, Harita Nickel’s Site Doctor, stated that the health screenings revealed a high prevalence of degenerative diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. “Many residents have yet to properly manage their blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Therefore, in addition to the screenings, we also provided education on the importance of a healthy diet and adequate rest as preventive measures,” he explained.

He further emphasized that education serves as a fundamental step in raising community awareness about health. “We must start with the basics&mdash;health promotion and disease prevention. Looking ahead, we hope to establish platforms or resources that enable the community to exchange insights on common health concerns in their environment,” he added.
