Welcoming the joy of Christmas, Harita Nickel employees in all business units celebrated Pre-Christmas with full solemnity and togetherness. This event was held alternately on Obi Island, starting from the PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), Obi Nickel Cobalt (ONC) and Dharma Cipta Mulia (DCM) groups on December 1, 2024, followed by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP) on December 6, 2024, PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), Karunia Permai Sentosa (KPS) and Obi Sinar Timur (OST) groups, on December 7, 2024, and PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP) on December 8, 2024.
TBP Mine Plan Engineering Manager, Das Anton, explained, “In accordance with the theme of Christmas this year, let us return to Bethlehem to meet Jesus Christ, and continue to improve ourselves better, and make Christmas to bring a message of peace to all people, regardless of religion and ethnicity.” Every Pre-Christmas celebration at the Obi site is filled with various spiritual activities, ranging from hymns, prayers and Christmas reflections that bring profound meaning to all participants.

Different from the previous year event, this year's Pre-Christmas celebrations at the HPL, ONC and DCM groups featured a musical drama, which was fully performed by Harita's employees in these business units. “The setting is based on a story of the birth of the Redeemer in Bethlehem, followed by spiritual songs. The hope is to bring new colors, and strengthen the faith of employees who are devoted to the celebration,” said Hyuda Widiyantoro, Chairman of the Pre-Christmas Celebration Committee of HPL, ONC and DCM. 
Different at HPL, the same at HJF. Chairman of the Pre-Christmas Celebration Committee at the pyrometallurgical business unit, Gilberth Tambunan, explained that this year's celebration reflected the peace of worshipping with family at home. “The atmosphere we build is like worshipping at church in our home. Starting from the solemn liturgy, to eating with Insan Harita at the end of the service. Hopefully a little treats Insan Harita's longing to celebrate Christmas with family at home,” he said. 
In addition, this moment is also used to strengthen relationships between employees, creating an atmosphere of harmony in the midst of the company's hectic operations. Dian Kristiyanto, as Manager of Technical Support HPL and ONC, gave an inspirational message, “Let's make Christmas not just a ceremony of tradition, but a moment to renew our commitment as part of Harita Nickel, to support each other, work with integrity, and build an atmosphere of love and peace, as God exemplifies.”
 
This message is a reminder for all Harita Nickel employees to continue to prioritize the values of love, peace and integrity in every aspect of work and daily life.
 
This Pre-Christmas celebration is not only a moment to commemorate the birth of the Savior, but also an opportunity to strengthen the spirit of togetherness and kinship among employees. “With the spirit of Christmas, Insan Harita hopes to continue to make a positive contribution to the community and the environment around our operational areas. Merry Christmas and Let's Look Forward to a Blessed Year 2025!” said the Chairman of MSP's Pre-Christmas Committee, Bintang Siahaan, enthusiastically.

Pre-Christmas Spirit: Harmony and Togetherness of Harita Nickel Employees on Obi Island

Amid the relentless pace of innovation and the dynamic landscape of mineral downstream industries, Harita Nickel is moving forward with the Harita Continuous Improvement (HCI) Masterclass, a program designed to improve skills and change how the company thinks about efficiency and innovation. On October 26 and 28, 2024, over 120 employees from different business units came together for a hands-on learning experience. Divided into 12 groups, these participants passed the first round of the HCI proposal process, fueling excitement for workplace improvements.
In the first session, Gatra Pinem, Harita Nickel’s Business Improvement Manager, delivered a presentation on how to package data in ways that are engaging and easy to understand. "This training goes beyond crunching numbers," Gatra began calmly. "It’s about how data tells a story, how numbers speak, and ultimately how they persuade judges and drive efficiency across every aspect of Harita Nickel’s operations." In a tone that bordered on the philosophical, Gatra emphasized that presenting compelling data isn't just about technique&mdash;it’s about how data can change the course of a project, even a company.

Following that, Joseph Sinaga, Superintendent of Corporate Affairs at Harita Nickel, brought a more pragmatic tone with his session on Effective Communication. Joseph underscored the significance of this skill, not only in the context of project management but also in every aspect of collaboration within the company. "Effective communication is the foundation of career success," Joseph asserted. "If we can convey ideas clearly and convincingly, we not only inspire our colleagues, but also ensure that every initiative aligns with the company’s direction and core values." For Joseph, communication is not just about the right words spoken with tact&mdash;it’s about inspiring real change.
Topan Prasetyo, Executive Business Controller at Harita Nickel, offered a broader perspective on the company’s journey. "Harita Nickel consistently strives to grow through adaptive strategies, particularly through innovation and operational efficiency," he noted. With its integrated mining and production operations on Obi Island, Harita Nickel remains committed to excellence, both in technological innovation and cost optimization, key drivers of the company’s growth amidst the fluctuations of the global industry.
Launched in June 2024, the HCI program aims to capture groundbreaking ideas from Harita Nickel’s employees. These innovations, however, go beyond simple concepts&mdash;they are expected to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and improve health, safety, and environmental performance. Although this is its inaugural year, HCI has already garnered attention: 110 innovation proposals have been submitted from various business units. Of these, 36 proposals have advanced to the implementation stage, and they have been presented to determine the top five innovations. The competition will culminate in February 2025, when champions from each business unit will vie for the overall winner’s title.
The HCI Masterclass serves as more than just a platform for participants to refine their projects&mdash;it is an opportunity to make a tangible contribution to the company's efficiency and performance. In line with Indonesia's vision for mineral downstream processing, Harita Nickel continues to push forward, one innovation at a time.
Also in attendance at the HCI Masterclass were management representatives and facilitators from various business units, watching with anticipation as initiatives like these promise to bring fresh winds of change to the company's future.

Elevating Operational Excellence through the HCI Masterclass

At PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), the work never stops, whether under the blazing sun or the quiet moonlight. As one of Harita Nickel's business units in mineral downstream processing, the plant hums with the task of turning low-grade nickel ore into key ingredients for electric vehicle batteries. But the risks are ever-present. Working in this plant comes with high stakes. Even the smallest mistake can be fatal, making leadership not just a skill, but an anchor for occupational health, safety, and environmental protection (HSE).
Through the Supervisory Leadership Training, Harita Nickel equips supervisors to handle the immense responsibilities they carry. The core of this initiative is to ensure that Harita's mid-level management&mdash;those who bridge the company’s vision with field execution&mdash;are not only prepared to communicate policies, but also to protect lives.
Human Resources & General Affairs Superintendent Junaidi Arief highlighted the critical role of supervisors in workplace safety. "Supervisors are the eyes and ears of management. Their leadership directly affects not just work results, but the safety of every team member," Junaidi said seriously. "In an industry where the risk of accidents is ever-present, effective leadership can be the difference between a safe shift or a fatal incident," he continued.&nbsp;
The mining and smelting sectors are notoriously high-risk. According to data from Indonesia’s Ministry of Manpower, more than 370,747 workplace accidents were recorded in 2023, with mining and heavy industries being the most critical. Supervisors in these sectors face immense pressure, not only to meet production targets but also to ensure safety protocols are strictly followed.
"Leadership is not just about giving orders. It’s about setting an example," Junaidi added. "Before leading others, we must first lead ourselves. When a supervisor demonstrates discipline, integrity, and commitment to safety based on the company’s core values, their team naturally follows," he emphasized.
This training program goes beyond theory and addresses real challenges that supervisors face every day. Supervisors like Laboratory Supervisor Indra Lesmana Rahayu gained deeper insights into the nuances of leading diverse teams. "What impressed me the most was learning how different leadership styles are needed for different people, ranging across generations, education levels, and work experience," Indra shared.
However, it's not just about managing tasks and the workforce. It's about fostering growth. Ore Processing Production Supervisor Hendrick Andreas Benaya Tandau reflected on how the training opened his eyes to the potential for developing his team. "Most of my team members are local employees, and it's important for me to give them opportunities to grow. This training showed me how to support that growth effectively," he explained.
In high-risk industries, leadership is crucial. A supervisor's guidance can prevent accidents, boost morale and efficiency, and ensure team safety. Harita Nickel's Supervisory Leadership Training is not just a program but a vital step in safeguarding the future of the company as it accelerates the nickel downstream industry.
"This kind of training is highly valuable, especially for someone like me, who has risen through the ranks from a Management Trainee (MT) to where I am now. It’s all thanks to the support from management, which provides opportunities for employees to enhance their capabilities," he concluded.

Supervisory Leadership Training: Harita Nickel Shapes Future Leaders in Nickel Downstream Industry

Harita Nickel held a series of activities that focus on strengthening work culture through socializing the company’s core values during this year. One of them was carried by PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) by promoting one of its core values: “Respect for Every Individual.” The sharing session was led by Deputy Head of HRGA at Harita Nickel Yohanes in the cinema room of HPL, and attended by leaders from each business unit of Harita Nickel, as well as its strategic partner, Lygend Resources.
In his opening remarks, Yohanes emphasized that “Respect for Every Individual” should be the foundation for creating a positive and inclusive work environment. He underscored that respect for all employees is a key factor in driving the company’s overall performance and success.
“When individuals feel valued and their roles are acknowledged as important, their work motivation tends to increase,” said Yohanes, emphasizing the importance of appreciation in driving employee productivity and overall performance.&nbsp;

He also noted that a successful company is not only measured by its financial achievements but by how it values each employee and the stakeholders involved. As an integrated nickel mining and processing company, Harita Nickel aims to ensure that this core value is consistently applied at every level of management, all the way down to employees on the ground.
Yohanes further explained that respect is not merely a formality, but involves genuine recognition and care for each individual. “The essence of respect is that we must honor, appreciate, understand, acknowledge, and pay attention to our fellow employees,” he added.
In Yohanes perspective, every individual in the organization deserves recognition for their contributions. By implementing this core value, Harita Nickel aims to foster an environment where every employee feels empowered and supported, both in their professional roles and in their everyday lives.
Yohanes also highlighted that implementing the "Respect for Every Individual" value has a direct and measurable impact on company performance. A work environment that values individual contributions fosters a more positive, innovative, and collaborative atmosphere.
In his closing remarks, Yohanes emphasized that “Respect for Every Individual” is not only a part of the company's internal culture and core values but also a long-term commitment of Harita Nickel. “This core value is extremely important, and numerous studies show that embracing it has a significant impact on our collective success within the company,” he concluded.

Creating a Culture of Respect: Harita Nickel’s Inclusive Work Environment

Harita Nickel once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting sustainable energy transition through the Harita Nickel Goes To Campus (HGTC) initiative. This time, Harita Nickel collaborated with the National Institute of Technology (ITENAS) in Bandung to organize a public lecture titled “Nickel and the Future of the Global Industry and Sustainable Energy Transition.” Held at the ITENAS Bale Dayang Sumbi Auditorium, the event on Friday (25/10) provided an important opportunity for ITENAS students to gain direct insights from experts on the nickel industry and sustainable practices.
The event was attended by over 500 students from various programs at ITENAS, demonstrating high enthusiasm for the topics of sustainability and the nickel mining industry. ITENAS Rector, Prof. Meilinda Nurbanasari, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., opened the event by warmly welcoming Harita Nickel and the students. She reminded students to take advantage of this opportunity to learn from the speakers’ experiences, preparing them better for the challenges they may face in the industry after graduation. “Events like these are crucial for helping students understand industry needs and adapt quickly,” Prof. Meilinda expressed.
The event featured experienced speakers from Harita Nickel, including Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Director Tonny Gultom, Head of External Relations Latif Supriadi, Deputy Head of HSE Iwan Syahroni, and Sustainability Senior Specialist Nisa Vidya Yuniarti. ITENAS also contributed with Environmental Engineering Professor Etih Hartati, M.T., who played a key role in discussing the challenges and solutions for sustainability in nickel mining.

In his presentation, Tonny Gultom explained Harita Nickel’s commitment to developing a sustainable nickel industry. “We are not only engaged in mining activities but also in building processing plants. This is one of Harita’s commitments to creating a sustainable mining operation. We process our mined materials domestically, thus creating downstream economic value, job opportunities, and ultimately supporting community welfare. That’s what we call sustainable mining,” said Tonny.
Tonny also emphasized that Harita Nickel’s sustainability efforts focus not only on economic gain but also on social and environmental impact. The company maintain environmental balance on Obi Island, North Maluku, and to support local community development through various empowerment programs. “We want to ensure that our mining activities benefit the surrounding community while keeping the environment intact,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Professor Etih provided an in-depth academic perspective on the challenges of preserving the environment amidst the demand for nickel mining. She highlighted that open-pit mining, commonly used in nickel extraction, can significantly impact ecosystems. “We must consider the environmental impact of mining activities. Therefore, environmentally friendly technology is essential to minimize these impacts,” she said.
Students were eager to engage in discussions and Q&A sessions with the speakers, with several expressing strong interest in sustainability topics and career opportunities in the nickel mining industry. Salsabilla, a 2022 Environmental Engineering student, stated that HGTC was very beneficial for her. “I gained deeper insight into sustainable environmental management conducted by Harita Nickel. I hope Harita continues to grow and makes innovations that contribute to the nation,” she shared.
This event served as a real-life example of how collaboration between industry and academia can create new opportunities and raising awareness of nickel’s importance in sustainable energy transition. By involving young generations in sustainability discussions, Harita Nickel contributes to creating a more efficient and responsible future for the industry.

Harita Nickel Talks About Sustainable Energy Transition in ITENAS Bandung

On a Saturday night in the living quarters of PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), a different atmosphere was felt in one corner of the employee housing area. Instead of winding down after a day’s work, several employees from various departments gathered to attend an insightful knowledge-sharing session. The topic? Photography.
Led by Rellixs Agustian, the Digital Media Production Supervisor at Harita Nickel, the session wasn’t about complex concepts or requiring advanced knowledge. It focused on sharing the basics of photography&mdash;something that caught the interest of many, especially in an era where almost everyone has a camera in their pocket.
The session began with a light discussion about what truly makes a photo stand out? “An expensive camera is just a tool; what truly matters is how we see and capture the story,” Rellixs explained with a smile. From there, the conversation seamlessly transitioned into essential techniques, such as selecting the right angles, mastering lighting, and creating visually compelling compositions.

Highly positive response and enthusiasm were seen in all participants. Among them was Aidatul Fitriyyah Sulaiman, an employee from Dispatch Department. Aida, as she is commonly known, expressed her appreciation for the easy-to-digest approach to the material, despite her lack of prior experience in photography.
“The content was beginner-friendly. As someone with no background in photography, I felt comfortable learning alongside colleagues who already had experience,” Aida remarked.
She further acknowledged that photography, while seemingly straightforward, is a complex field. Mastering it requires familiarity with a variety of terms and techniques to produce meaningful and visually striking photographs.
“Photography seems simple, but there are so much to learn,” Aida said enthusiastically. “It made me even more eager to dive deeper into the subject. If there’s another session like this, I’ll definitely join.”
What made this session special was not just the material but also the atmosphere. There was no formal or rigid tone; participants were free to ask questions anytime, share a laugh, and even recount their own experiences with photography.
Despite being a modestly scaled event, the session delivered a meaningful impact. Not only expanding participants’ knowledge but also providing a refreshing change of pace from their daily work routines. By the end, attendees expressed a strong sense of pride and curiosity, eager to apply their newfound insights.
In his closing remarks, Rellixs wrapped up with a simple yet impactful message: “Photography isn’t just about taking pictures; it’s about telling a story.”
The session, while simple in its execution, left a lasting impression by encouraging participants to view the world from new perspectives. This, perhaps, is the true essence of photography&mdash;not solely about the outcome but about the process of observation, understanding, storytelling, and finding joy in the journey.

Sharing Session on Photography: Telling Stories Through Camera Shots

Over 300 students from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) attended a public lecture titled "The Role of Nickel and Energy Transition in Building a Clean Future in Indonesia." The event, held at the Auditorium of the Smart Green Learning Center (SGLC) in the Faculty of Engineering at UGM, was part of the Harita Nickel Goes to Campus (HGTC) program. This initiative aims to provide students with insights into the strategic role of nickel in supporting Indonesia's sustainable energy transition.
The event featured Harita Nickel’s Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), Tonny Gultom, as the keynote speaker. He was accompanied by other Harita Nickel experts, including Head of Exploration and Mine Development Robby Rafianto, Climate Change Senior Specialist Muhammad Iqbal, and Community Affairs Superintendent Muhammad Yuda Pranata. The session was moderated by Dr. Eng. Ir. Lucas Donny Setijadji, S.T., M.Sc., IPU, a lecturer from UGM's Department of Geological Engineering.
In his presentation, Tonny emphasized the importance of implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in the mining industry, particularly to ensure environmental sustainability. “One of our tangible efforts is regular ecological monitoring, which includes tracking seawater quality and preserving marine biodiversity around our operational areas,” he explained.

Tonny also highlighted Harita Nickel's environmental conservation initiatives, such as the installation of artificial coral reefs, or reef cubes, in the waters near Kawasi, Obi Island. This program aims to maintain biodiversity and support fish population growth in the area. The company also conducts routine seawater quality testing, plankton sampling, and temperature monitoring to ensure the marine ecosystem remains healthy.
“We take water samples to test their quality, conduct plankton sampling, and profile seawater columns. Additionally, we monitor the health of fish and coral reefs and keep track of water temperature,” Tonny elaborated.
In addition to environmental efforts, Harita Nickel is also engaged in community empowerment programs. Community Affairs Superintendent Muhammad Yuda Pranata mentioned that the company’s agribusiness program on Obi Island, North Maluku, has created hundreds of jobs. “The Food Resilience Center in Buton Village supports 65 farming groups, with watermelon harvests reaching 8 tons every month,” Yuda said.
He further explained, “Programs like horticultural development and community entrepreneurship units have significantly improved the local economy, especially through capacity-building initiatives for local farmers.”
The lecture was met with great enthusiasm by UGM students. Kirana Permatasari, a student from the Faculty of Technology, expressed her admiration. “The event was amazing. I had the chance to learn directly from experts and gain a deeper understanding of the nickel industry in Indonesia, especially its products and derivatives,” she said.
Zito Zuma, a UGM student from the 2020 class, added, “Beyond the interesting material, this event also provided insights into how the mining industry can remain environmentally conscious while empowering local communities. I hope this program reaches other universities in Indonesia.”
The Harita Nickel Goes to Campus program is not limited to UGM but is also held at several other universities in Indonesia. Through this initiative, Harita Nickel seeks to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices while making meaningful contributions to the environment and local communities.

Harita Nickel Engages UGM Students on the Role of Nickel and Energy Transition

Seeing firsthand how nickel mining operated by Harita Nickel in Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku, gives us pride. It is because nickel ore, which is one of Indonesia's rich natural resources, is directly mined and processed in its site to produce ferronickel as well as Nickel Sulfate and Cobalt Sulfate. Whereas in the past it was exported abroad in the form of nickel ore, so Indonesia used to be criticized for selling its land and water literally.&nbsp;
On Obi Island that is not the case. Nickel ore in the form of saprolite is processed into ferronickel, while limonite which has a low nickel content is processed into nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate with High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) technology.&nbsp;
After the nickel mining was completed, the ex-mining areas were properly reclaimed as evidenced by the normal growth of vegetation. As a soil science background person, I am well aware that it is not easy to grow revegetation plants in topsoil dominated by iron oxide. This kind of soil has a high pH around neutral. That seems good, but despite the high pH, these soils have a very low net positive charge and Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), so their ability to absorb nutrients in the form of cations is also very low.&nbsp;

In addition, the amount of Ca-exchangeable in this soil is smaller than the amount of Mg-exchangeable, so plants will experience Ca deficiency, an element that is essential for plant cell development. The cropping conditions in the Harita Nickel reclamation area show that these soil properties can be overcome by applying high doses of compost, which is more than 20 tons/ha.&nbsp;
However, even though it is good, for future revegetation programs it is strongly recommended that the compost used be improved first by adding FABA ((Fly Ash and Bottom Ash, which is waste ash from burning coal in Steam Power Plants) with a ratio of compost: FABA 75: 25 or KomFABA 75: 25.&nbsp;
Compost is very good for improving soil physical properties and increasing soil CEC. However, compost has low nutrient levels and requires a long time to be available to plants, which is through the decomposition process. Therefore, adding FABA can ensure the availability of nutrients needed by plants in a short time because FABA contains various nutrients in soluble form. The addition of FABA to compost will also reduce Ca deficiency in plants.
KomFABA can also be utilized in Salam Kawasi Agropark. Various food crops such as tomatoes, eggplants, corn, chilies, and others can be planted in this area as a pilot as well as to prove that the food produced in this area is safe for consumption, of course, after being proven by laboratory analysis.&nbsp;
In addition to good plant growth conditions in the reclamation area, Harita Nickel's seriousness in carrying out reclamation is also evident in the provision of various kinds of seeds with quantities exceeding the needs of revegetation each year. These seeds are prepared in a modernly built nursery area. Harita Nickel's concern for the environment is also evident in keeping erosion and sedimentation under control by building extensive settling ponds TG 1 and TG 2. These settling ponds are proven to keep the beach and sea around Obi Island, which is directly opposite the mining area, clean and blue. Also the presence of 2 very large coal domes can maintain air quality to be free from flying coal dust pollution.&nbsp;

Harita Nickel also cares about its surrounding community by building the Kawasi Baru area for the settlement of indigenous people of Kawasi Village. Community empowerment is also carried out for rice farmers, planters, fishermen, and entrepreneurs of tofu, tempeh, processed nutmeg, banana chips, and others.&nbsp;

Inspiring Stories of IPB Professors on Site Visit to Harita Nickel 

In early December 2024, two prominent academics, Rochsyid Anggara and Rudiyansah, stepped into the heart of Harita Nickel’s flagship nickel downstreaming operation. As heads of the Mining Technology and Metallurgical Technology programs at the Polytechnic of Energy and Mining (PEP) Bandung&mdash;an institution under Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources&mdash;they carried more than just their titles.&nbsp;
Under Halmahera’s glaring sun, reflecting off heavy machinery, the two academics explored every corner of the Obi Site. From the state-of-the-art High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) process that produces raw materials for EV batteries Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), crystallization plants for nickel and cobalt sulfate, and the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) smelters, they witnessed technological sophistication up close. They also toured reclamation areas, where once-mined lands are now verdant habitats, a testament to Harita Nickel’s environmental commitment.
But this journey wasn’t just about machinery and technology. As they made their way to Kawasi Village, they witnessed the transformation of a once-isolated village into a hub of community empowerment. Through Harita Nickel's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, Kawasi Village now receives support in developing Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) as well as the agricultural sector. The Propala production house, for example, stands as a tangible example of how industry can serve as a bridge for developing local skills, creating new and sustainable opportunities for the village’s economy.

The visit culminated with the Harita Future Leaders Class, an exclusive program for Management Trainees, Foremen, and production staff. With 12 selected participants, the session resembled an intimate discussion rather than a conventional seminar.
Rudiyansah, addressing the class, emphasized HPAL’s role in placing Indonesia at the forefront of global downstreaming. “HPAL is more than just a technology&mdash;it’s a representation of our effort to maximize Indonesia’s mineral resources sustainably. By producing nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate, we’re not just meeting market demands; we’re positioning Indonesia as a key player in the electric vehicle battery supply chain,” he said.
Meanwhile, Rochsyid highlighted often-overlooked aspects of downstreaming: workplace safety and environmental management. “Successful downstreaming requires robust occupational health and safety (OHS) practices and environmental management that evolves with the times. Community empowerment is equally vital&mdash;it’s not just about mining but also about creating a positive impact across society,” he explained.
Rochsyid expressed optimism about Harita Nickel’s commitment to continuous improvement, adding, “I hope these efforts lead to greater recognition, particularly the Good Mining Practice Award from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.”

At the Obi Site, the lines between campus and mine blurred, replaced by a shared vision of sustainability. “Much like nickel processed with precision, this collaboration is part of Indonesia’s grand ambition: to lead globally in mineral downstreaming while staying rooted in its local essence,” Rudiyansah concluded.

Bridging Theory and Practice, PEP Bandung Academics Explore Harita Nickel’s Operations

Harita Nickel, through its subsidiary PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel, conducted a “Safety Goes to School”&nbsp;program at SMA Tunas Muda in Kawasi Village on Saturday, January 20, 2024. The initiative, held as part of the 2024 National Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Month, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of OHS among students.
More than 60 students from various grade levels participated in two key training sessions: basic fire extinguishing techniques and safe driving practices. For the fire extinguishing session, the company deployed three Emergency Response Team (ERT) personnel and five members of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Department to demonstrate fire suppression using a wet blanket.
 
“This program is designed to be engaging and educational, equipping students with essential skills in a fun and relatable way. For example, we likened fire suppression techniques to the skills of animated heroes in the Avatar series, empowering students to understand and manage fire effectively by learning about its chemical components,” explained Hendri Saputro, OHS Supervisor at Harita Nickel.

Hendri further explained that this educational program aims to introduce OHS practices that can be applied in daily life, whether at home or school. This aligns with Harita Nickel’s commitment to OHS, which emphasizes maintaining safe operational activities through a culture of safety while also creating a positive social impact in the community.
 
“We believe that the young generation participating in this program will become agents of change who can carry forward the culture of OHS in the future, starting within their immediate environment. Additionally, we distributed 65 reusable water bottles to students and teachers as part of our commitment to reducing single-use plastic waste,” Hendri stated.
 
Representing the principal of SMA Tunas Muda, Marlon Vergi Kurama expressed appreciation for Harita Nickel’s continued dedication to building the capacity of Obi Island’s younger generation. “This program is invaluable in broadening the knowledge of teenage students, who are increasingly relied upon by their families. It equips them with the ability to identify potential risks in their homes and schools and to understand prevention and mitigation measures,” said Marlon.

Marlon hopes that educational programs like this could be conducted on an ongoing basis to broaden students’ understanding of potential risks. “Other risks, such as electrical hazards and earthquakes, could serve as additional engaging topics for student education. We look forward to continued collaboration with Harita Nickel in developing smart and safety-conscious young generations through OHS training,” Marlon added.
 
Ikra Jouronga, the Student Council President of SMA Tunas Muda Kawasi, shared her positive experience, highlighting the practical benefits of the materials provided by the Harita Nickel team. “The training was very useful and easy to understand, making it simple to apply in daily life at home and school,” Ikra said.
 
In addition to the Safety Goes to School program, Harita Nickel’s National OHS Month social initiatives included a Healthy Movement and Coastal Cleanup activity in Kawasi and a Health Education and Free Medical Check-up program.
 
This year, the National OHS Month carries the theme Foster an OHS Culture: Healthy and Safe at Work, Sustaining Business Continuity. “In alignment with this theme, Harita Nickel aims to extend the spirit of OHS culture beyond our operations to the surrounding community. We recognize that companies and communities exist within a shared socio-economic ecosystem, working hand in hand to advance Indonesia’s economy, especially in South Halmahera,” Hendri concluded.
