The grand celebration of Indonesia's 79th Independence Day at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) was full of festivity. The stage, set up on the futsal field, became a showcase of employee creativity, featuring the local poco-poco dance, singing, stand-up comedy, and a DJ performance to close the event.
In the crowd, Heronikel crew were busy with their tasks&mdash;some handled stage lighting and sound at the Front of House (FOH), while cameramen captured live footage, and other crew members welcomed guests at the entrance.
 
“This is not just an HRGA event; it’s for all of us from every department at HJF, Karunia Permai Sentosa (KPS), and Obi Sinar Timur (OST),” said Christoforus Nanda Rahardian, Employee Relations Specialist at KPS and the event’s head organizer. Christo also expressed gratitude to the management teams from Harita Nickel and Lygend Resources for their support, as well as to the organizing committees from various departments who worked together to make the event a success.
 
The Independence Day celebration was just one of many activities initiated by the Industrial & Employee Relations (IR & ER) teams from HJF, KPS, and PT Obi Sinar Timur (OST). Taufik Setiaji, Harita Nickel’s Industrial & Employee Relations Manager, stated that the primary responsibility of his team is to foster harmonious industrial relations between the company, employees, and the government. He elaborated that a harmonious relationship is achieved when the company operates in accordance with labor regulations, and employees fully support company policies, guided by the company's core values in achieving shared goals.
 
“The role of IR and ER here is to be the communication bridge between company management and employees, and between the company and the government, particularly in ensuring compliance with labor regulations. The challenge is how, as the middleman, we can remain balanced between all parties,” he explained, adding that flexible communication is essential to succeed in this challenging role.

In the field, Taufik continued, his team’s tasks are broken down into two main objectives. The first is enforcing regulations through activities such as socialization, training, and counseling. Most recently, his team initiated the confiscation of prohibited items from employee housing areas, not just as a disciplinary measure but as part of their commitment to upholding Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards.
 
“The second objective is employee relations, achieved through organizing events that foster a sense of togetherness between company management and employees,” he said, citing the Independence Day competitions as one example.
 
Agusto Riwu GA Sandy, IR Supervisor, added that his team is developing a communication and consultation platform comprising employee representatives from various departments. Named the "Justice Task Force" (Satgas Pembawa Keadilan or SPK), its mission is to help resolve employee issues, not only those related to work but also personal matters.
 
“For instance, issues like personal debts between employees, breakups, or even blocked ATM cards&mdash;while these are personal matters and beyond the scope of IR, they do affect work. Through SPK, we strive to find the best solutions together,” he explained, accompanied by George Tirta, IR Specialist, who added that IR’s role in SPK is as a facilitator, with personnel from various departments trained for this purpose.

Agusto mentioned the "Heronikel" brand, introduced last year, which symbolizes Harita Nickel's employees. It highlights workers on-site as more than just employees&mdash;they are "nickel heroes."The idea behind it is simple yet resonant&mdash;those working on-site are not just employees, but nickel heroes. These workers, who leave their homes and families to labor in remote, often harsh conditions, are viewed as more than just providers. They area also national heroes, key contributors in the country’s broader ambition to drive industrial downstreaming and fuel economic growth.
 
“To put it simply, the purpose of SPK is to build trust among employees, as we provide a platform for every employee to voice their concerns. Heronikel, and its various entertainment initiatives like Herocreative, through events that offer fun and relaxation, serve as a reward for that trust,” Agusto explained.
 
Taufik underscored the fact that every initiative his team undertakes is driven by one overarching goal: enhancing employee productivity. It’s not a luxury, he suggested, but a necessity in the face of Harita Nickel’s ever-growing operational demands. With eight production lines fully operational at HJF, OST progressing into its third phase of power plant construction&mdash;set to generate a total capacity of 1,670 megawatts, and KPS set to begin operations with 12 production lines by 2025, all face mounting demands.
 
“What we are doing is an implementation of Harita Nickel’s Core Values. A solid team doesn’t just happen&mdash;it’s built on a foundation of mutual trust. This spirit is crucial, especially as production targets leave no room for compromise,” he concluded.

Applying HARITA Core Values, IR & ER HJF Builds Employee Trust

Obi Island, home to Harita Nickel’s operations, is a place of abundant mineral resources. Beyond its waters, teeming with marine biodiversity, this island&mdash;rich in nickel&mdash;also has fertile land. Yet, despite its potential, agriculture here remains underdeveloped.
Recognizing this untapped promise, Harita Nickel, through its Community Development and Empowerment program (Pengembangan dan Pemberdayaan Masyarakat or PPM), has embarked on agricultural initiatives for local residents. The aim is twofold: to help locals achieve food independence and provide them with a steady source of income.
 
Lukmanul Hakim, Agriculture and Fishery Supervisor at Harita Nickel, plays a central role in this mission. A graduate of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Bogor Agricultural Institute (Institut Pertanian Bogor or IPB), he joined Harita Nickel in 2021, initially as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) staff member. His first assignment was assisting Obi Sehati (Sentra Holtikultura dan Agribisnis Tanggap Iklim or the Center for Horticulture and Climate-Sensitive Agribusiness), a company-supported farming group that focused on growing watermelon.
 
At just 28 years old, this native of Makassar reflects on his journey. One of the main challenges he faced was aligning the visions of farmers, each with different temperaments and perspectives. Patience and effective communication were key in uniting them toward a common goal.
 
“It’s exhausting&mdash;traveling across Obi Island’s villages to provide guidance, and then having to wait months for the harvest. But seeing the results now, it’s all worth it,” said the father of three, with a sense of pride.

Three years later, Lukman’s efforts have expanded to twelve agricultural support programs, and nearly all the farming groups he and the Community Development team manage have reached a level of independence. For Lukman, this progress is nothing short of remarkable.
 
“The process was long. I didn’t imagine we’d come this far. Many farmers, who initially had very little income, now earn enough to support their daily needs,” he explained.
 
Some of the standout programs include the Obi Food Security Center (SENTANI) in Buton Village, focused on rice cultivation. Obi Sehati in Akegula and Buton Villages specializes in horticulture as well as watermelon and melon farming. Super Hortima in Laiwui Village focuses on fish farming and horticulture.
 
In Baru Village, the focus is on horticulture and soybean farming, while Jikotamo Village supports horticulture and livestock farming. In Kawasi Village, the SUTAN program is centered on local fishermen, whose catches are sold to meet Harita Nickel’s needs.
 
“Some of the harvest, such as watermelons and melons from Buton Village, and fish from Kawasi Village, is already being supplied to the company,” Lukman noted.
 
Meanwhile, other harvests are used by the farming groups for their own needs or sold within the local communities.
 
“We’re currently supplying up to 10 tons of watermelon to Harita Nickel’s site each month, and about 2 tons of melon,” he added.
 
Lukman, who recently received recognition from the Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration for his commitment to the acceleration of village development and the achievement of the Village SDGs, remains optimistic. He believes these numbers will continue to grow, in line with increasing demand from the company.
 
“With this, we want to show the existence of an active and effective partnership between the local community and Harita Nickel,” Lukman concluded.

Lukmanul Hakim: Weaving Hope for Food Sovereignty

The Cinema at the HPAL Activity Center, Site Obi, was filled with excitement and enthusiasm as over 230 young men and women from Harita Nickel gathered for the Youth Forum. This Youth Forum marked the third and final event in a series for 2024, closing the year on a high note. Under the theme ‘Satu Harita, Bergerak dan Berdampak’, this forum also celebrated Hari Sumpah Pemuda, carrying the spirit of unity, togetherness, and positive impact.
Sumpah Pemuda spirit among Harita Nickel’s youth was amplified by the presence of Anita Gathmir, a remarkable figure and founder of an SME focused on preserving and reviving Tidore’s traditional weaving, which had been lost for over 100 years.
 
Anita shared her inspiring story and brought a collection of woven pieces showcased in the first-ever fashion show on Obi Island. 8 Harita Nickel team members modeled these woven garments in a fashion show by Puta Dino Kayangan, blending local culture with modern elegance.
 
“Tidore weaving is a heritage with immense historical and cultural value. I’m delighted to introduce it to the young generation on Obi Island, especially at Harita Nickel. I hope that the spirit to preserve this cultural legacy will grow in your hearts, becoming a source of pride for us all as a nation,” said Anita Gathmir.
 
Gita Rotua Marchelia Tambunan, Finance & Accounting Staff from Harita Nickel’s business unit PT. Obi Nickel Cobalt, expressed her pride in being chosen as a model and trusted to present Tidore’s traditional weave by Puta Dino Kayangan.
 
“To be honest, this was my first fashion show in a while, and I’m thrilled to showcase this eastern pride, the traditional Tidore weave. Huge thanks to Ms. Anita for trusting me,” Gita said with joy.

Also attending the Youth Forum was SME Supervisor Harita Nickel, Windi Ashari, who shared her story of empowering women’s groups in Kawasi and Soligi villages. Her dedication has led to award-winning CSR programs that uplift the local community’s welfare through MSME development.
 
“We strive to make a positive impact in Kawasi and Soligi, especially in the SME sector. I also want to encourage my Harita Nickel colleagues to make even the smallest impact in their surroundings,” said Windi Ashari, inspiring forum participants.
 
As the Youth Forum commemorated Hari Sumpah Pemuda, it highlighted the importance of collaboration among young people across all business units at Harita Nickel. Despite diverse business units, each youth member is united as part of Harita Nickel and encouraged to collaborate.
 
At the event’s conclusion, participants left the forum with renewed energy, carrying powerful messages from the speakers and invaluable experiences. Anita and Windi both hoped this forum would be the first step for Harita Nickel’s youth to keep moving forward, continue to create something, and always inspire others.
 
“Harita Nickel has provided a platform for self-actualization for me and everyone here through the Youth Forum. This platform also proves the spirit of impactful movement and collaboration for all of us at Harita Nickel,” Windi Ashari concluded.
 
As the 2024 Youth Forums comes to an end, Harita Nickel reaffirms its commitment to supporting youth development within the company and the surrounding community. Through collaboration, cultural preservation, and sustainable leadership, Harita Nickel hopes to make a greater positive impact on Indonesia and the world.

The Spirit of Sumpah Pemuda  Ignited at the 2024 Harita Nickel’s Youth Forum

Obi Island welcomed a new day and a new friend from Tidore. Her name is Anita Gathmir, a talented woman and the founder of Puta Dino Kayangan, a SME business focused on the preservation and development of traditional Tidore weaving.
The arrival of Anita Gathmir and her team aimed to share a wealth of knowledge and experience on innovation in MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) development with Harita employees and housewives in Kawasi Village, Obi Island. On this occasion, this woman of Tidore Sultanate descent&mdash;bearing the Kaicil surname&mdash;also introduced traditional weaving crafts, a heritage of her ancestors, which she revived after it had been lost for a century.
 
“My first impression of this place is incredible. I was amazed by Harita Nickel’s efforts to empower the surrounding community, one of which is through SME,” she said, adding that it was her first time visiting Obi Island and being able to see the mining operational area.
The concrete efforts to empower the people of Obi Island, particularly in Kawasi, are demonstrated through the products of the Obi Jaya Mandiri SME, nurtured by Harita Nickel. SME Supervisor Harita Nickel, Windi Ashari, explained that various snack products from these SME include a range of options.
“We call it Obi Snack, consisting of various brands like Horiwo Tuna Crackers and Horiwo Roa Sambal,” she explained while offering these products to Anita Gathmir to try.
So far, there are seven business units under the Obi Jaya Mandiri SME, including Obi Snack for snack foods, Hop Mart as a mini-market, Nyala Cafe and Prosa Cafe in the food and beverages sector, Promama producing products from virgin coconut oil (VCO) and coconut oil, Rute Kawasi processing tempeh, and Rute Soligi producing tofu. With these seven business units, the total revenue generated reaches 700 million rupiah per month. This proves that the benefits of Harita Nickel’s Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) program can be directly felt by the local residents.
During her visit with the extraordinary women in Kawasi Village, Anita Gathmir, as the founder of Puta Dino Kayangan, did not forget to showcase her world-renowned woven products and briefly demonstrate how to weave the traditional Tidore textiles. Her success in preserving the distinctive Tidore weaving is attributed to her continuous efforts to innovate in product development.

“Product innovation can come from the way we package the products we make or even change the shape of our products to have certain characteristics. The women of Kawasi need to do this, so that their products have a distinctive identity that represents Obi Island,” she explained.
This message inspired the women in Kawasi Village to be more confident and to innovate in the future. “Thank you, Ms. Anita, for your presence and for providing motivation and sharing experiences to improve the Harita Nickel SME in the future. We are very happy!” said Windi, who mentors the women of the Obi Jaya Mandiri SME.
After meeting with the women in Kawasi, Anita Gathmir also visited some PPM initiatives undertaken by Harita Nickel, namely the Greenhouse and the New Settlement Area in Kawasi Village.
Corporate Social Responsibility Supervisor Harita Nickel, Albertus Darukumar, explained that the Greenhouse owned by Harita Nickel in the Salam Kawasi area develops various products such as melons and golden melons.
“So far, we have developed two varieties, specifically for the regular melon, which has been fully absorbed by the company. For the golden melon, the market is more niche and premium because its taste is much better, even though its price is slightly higher. Many people have become addicted to our golden melon,” he concluded confidently, which was met with laughter from the entire Puta Dino Kayangan team.
While trying the melons and golden melons produced, Anita Gathmir and her team from Puta Dino Kayangan expressed their appreciation for the efforts made. “I really didn’t expect the efforts that Harita Nickel is putting into supporting and caring for the environment and its communities to be so commendable,” she said.
After visiting the Greenhouse in the Salam Kawasi area, the next location visited was the New Settlement Area in Kawasi Village. This settlement area is gradually being inhabited by residents from the Old Kawasi Village. There are a total of 259 houses, which will increase, along with facilities such as a mosque, church, office, clinic, and educational facilities.
“Again, this is the first time I’ve seen a company that goes out of its way to build residential homes for the local population,” said Anita while observing the New Settlement Area in Kawasi Village.
 
The visit to CSR projects by Harita Nickel, concluded with enjoying traditional Obi fried bananas while drinking pure coconut water. It was a sweet ending to Anita Gathmir's first visit with the Puta Dino Kayangan team to the site. Anita’s initial perception of the mining area changed dramatically after seeing what Harita Nickel is doing, as this is what the mining industry should do: continuously preserve and empower the land and the people working within it

Changing Mindsets: The Inspirational Journey of Anita Gathmir to Obi Island

PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, also known as Harita Nickel, an integrated and sustainable nickel mining and processing company operating on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku, participated in a knowledge sharing event with the Indonesian Mining Experts Association (PERHAPI) of North Maluku Province. The is part of the series of activities for the VI Regional Conference (Musda) of PERHAPI North Maluku and was attended by mining engineering students from Khairun University (Unkhair) and Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku (UMMU).
Harita Nickel’s Greenfield Strategic Mine Plan General Manager Lesbon Sitorus, was one of the main speakers at the event. He delivered a presentation titled “Assessing the Comparative Advantages of Laterite Nickel Extraction Using Pyrometallurgy vs Hydrometallurgy at Harita Nickel.”
 
Lesbon began his presentation by motivating the students, emphasizing that working in the mining sector has a positive impact on many people, including families and communities. He encouraged mining engineering students from Unkhair and UMMU to continue honing their skills to seize employment opportunities in mining companies.
 
In his presentation, Lesbon highlighted that Harita Nickel currently employs around 20,000 workers, with over 85% being Indonesian, and of that, about 50% are from North Maluku.
 
Lesbon explained the rapid development of nickel processing amount at Harita Nickel, including various technologies that have been developed. He discussed the structure of laterite soil, which consists of limonite, saprolite, and bedrock pinnacle. The combination of these elements provides a comparative advantage in the nickel ore production process carried out by Harita Nickel.
 
Regarding environmental aspects, Lesbon reiterated Harita Nickel’s commitment to sustainability, including post-mining land rehabilitation programs and tailing management. He also mentioned conservation measures that have been implemented as part of the company's environmental responsibility.
 
The Chairperson of the Organizing Committee for the VI Regional Conference (Musda) of PERHAPI North Maluku, Hilda Alkatiri, stated that Lesbon’s presentation provided valuable knowledge for the attending students. Students from the first to seventh semesters showed great enthusiasm for the material.
 
“The seminar room was filled with students, and several even asked questions to Mr. Lesbon after the presentation. This shows their interest in learning more about the mining industry,” said Hilda.
 
Hilda, who is also a lecturer at Unkhair, added that Harita Nickel has always been proactive in supporting activities organized by professional mining associations and universities. This is demonstrated by the company not only sending speakers but also providing full support by sponsoring the event.
 
“This event serves as an important moment for students to deepen their knowledge of nickel ore extraction processes, opening up great career opportunities in the mining industry and enhancing their knowledge to face future challenges,” she concluded.

Harita Nickel Shares Knowledge with PERHAPI North Maluku

Amid the intricate layers of nickel mining on Obi Island, a crucial effort is underway to safeguard every step taken by workers on site. Harita Nickel, through one of its business units, PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), documented essential instructions related to preventing work accidents. This guide, created in pocketbook form, was officially handed over to the management team on Monday (October 21) and subsequently distributed to all MSP employees. For MSP’s workforce, known as Insan Harita, this guide is more than just paper, it’s a compass for navigating risks and fostering a culture of safety.
This bilingual pocket guide is more than just a list of instructions; it holds essential guidance on accident prevention, working in confined spaces, using personal protective equipment, and emergency procedures. Beyond instructions, each page is designed to help employees understand and recognize the hazards present in their work environment and effectively address those risks. Through this effort, MSP demonstrates that safety is not just a company target but a deeply held value.
 
"At Harita Nickel, we prioritize the safety and health of our employees above all else. This pocket guide is part of our continuous effort to ensure that Insan Harita has access to practical and easily understood safety guidelines. Thus, they not only understand the risks within their work environment but also know the correct steps to protect themselves and their colleagues," expressed Tonny Gultom, Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at Harita Nickel.

&nbsp;“Our goal is to make sure every employee can go home healthy and safe each day. Through this guide, we aim to offer practical OHS information that’s easy to understand and apply,” shares Willy Kusuma Dewadi, Head of Technical Support at MSP further.
 
MSP has also planned a company-wide awareness initiative to ensure that over 2,000 employees can deepen their understanding of operational risks. “We hope this guide not only strengthens employees’ understanding of risk management in the field but also serves as a practical tool they can carry anywhere,” Willy adds.
 
This initiative reflects MSP’s long-term mission: to establish a safety-centered work culture where everyone, from managers to frontline workers, plays a role in each other’s well-being. With passion, Willy asserts, “Safety is a shared responsibility.” Like a map well-marked, this OHS pocket guide is a small yet transformative resource for building a safe and humane workplace in the nickel mining and processing sector.
 
This distribution aims to foster mutual care among colleagues. Workplace safety is not just about self-protection but about ensuring everyone around us can work safely, reflecting Harita Nickel’s core value of teamwork. “When employees actively support each other’s safety, they go beyond following K3 protocols and help build a culture of shared responsibility,” explains Charles Hasiholan, Deputy Head of Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) at MSP.
 
Beyond teamwork, accountability plays a crucial role in sustaining safety at MSP. Each individual is encouraged to take personal responsibility for following OHS standards and identifying potential hazards. Accountability ensures that every action, big or small, directly impacts everyone’s safety. “Armed with these core values, our work environment becomes stronger, with safety not merely an individual concern but a collective commitment, woven seamlessly into daily operations,” Charles concludes.

Improving Work Safety, Harita Nickel Distributes K3 Pocket Book

The golden glow of decorative lights softly illuminated the corners of the employee residential area at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), a business unit of Harita Nickel specializing in processing high-grade nickel ore, or saprolite. The soothing background music blended seamlessly with the cool Saturday afternoon breeze. Slowly, a stream of gray uniforms approached Obi Café, where the soft opening promised something more than just coffee&mdash;a momentary escape from the weight of the industrial grind. The ambiance was warm and welcoming, providing a much-needed respite amid the demanding industrial routine.
Employees settled into their seats around the neatly arranged wooden tables, the stress of the day gradually fading. Tired faces softened into relaxed smiles and occasional laughter filled the café. The modest, welcoming space seemed to embrace their quiet conversations, offering a brief escape from the workday.

Human Resources & General Affairs (HRGA) Superintendent Agus Margono stood on the stage in front of the cafe, wearing the same uniform as the other employees. His calm voice carried a hint of pride as he spoke about the idea behind establishing Obi Cafe.
 
"Obi Cafe has been a long-planned company initiative to improve employee welfare and comfort. It's meant to offer a relaxing space where employees can rest and socialize during breaks. We hope this new facility will motivate employees to give their best to the company," Agus said in his speech.
 
For Agus, the café is more than just a new facility. It’s meant to encourage stronger connections and a sense of togetherness, free from workplace hierarchies. He sees it as more than a simple break room&mdash;it’s a small but meaningful way to help employees feel more united.
 
Area Manager of PT Gobel Dharma Sarana Karya (GDSK) Sugiri, shared his pride in working with HJF. "We're happy to partner with the company on Obi Café and support employee welfare. We hope to make this space more lively and comfortable for employees to rest and socialize," he said.

The inviting ambiance of the cafe was immediately evident on its opening day. Dozens of employees were seen enjoying snacks while socializing. Aldi Layuk, an employee from Dispatch Department, expressed his enthusiasm for its opening. 
 
“This is truly the perfect place to relax. After a long day at work, we can socialize and have casual conversations with friends,” he remarked.
 
The presence of Obi Cafe serves as an oasis amid the bustling nickel processing industry on Obi Island. This initiative also reflects the company’s commitment to enhancing employee welfare by creating a work environment that is not only suitable in terms of facilities but also meets the social and emotional needs of employees.

Obi Café: A Sip of Serenity in the Midst of Busy Operations

As dawn breaks over Obi Island, the sky brightens with the promise of a busy day. In the large kitchen of Harita Nickel, chefs work with urgency, turning a variety of prepared ingredients into delicious dishes. Steam rises from big pots, filling the air with inviting aromas.
One employee peels onions, while another chops fresh greens. Each worker wears masks, gloves, and hair coverings, ensuring that cleanliness is a top priority in this kitchen. Meticulous attention is devoted to food quality and hygiene. Every ingredient that enters the kitchen must undergo rigorous Quality Control (QC) processes. The cafeteria team inspects everything, from the freshness of ingredients to their packaging. 
 
“We place great emphasis on hygiene. Every ingredient must be inspected by our Food Safety and Industrial Hygiene team. From the initial stages through the cooking process, everything must adhere to the standards set by management,” Junaidi Arief, HRGA Superintendent of PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) clarifies.
 
These busy kitchens might seem like any other, but it is anything but ordinary. It is vital for feeding over twenty thousand people every day on Obi Island in North Maluku. Each day, around sixty thousand meals are prepared, with fifteen thousand meals made specifically for the employees HPL.

To keep meals exciting, the menus are changed daily. At HPL, there's even a live cooking program that offers employees a unique experience. “We create a monthly menu plan so employees can enjoy different meals, and we also have live cooking events to add variety,” he says.
 
These kitchens never sleep; they operate around the clock, ensuring that all of the employees receive nourishing meals that support their demanding work. “The food supply must be continuous,” explains Junaidi. 
 
“Our cafeteria team is fully operational, preparing breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even midnight snacks&mdash;all provided free of charge for our employees, whom we refer to as Insan Harita,” he adds.
 
Yet, given the company's remote location, how does Harita Nickel guarantee a steady supply of food? The unpredictable weather often presents its own set of challenges. 
 
“We indeed face challenges in sourcing food supplies, but we strive to overcome them by collaborating with local suppliers,” Junaidi reveals.
 
These local suppliers consist of farmers and fishermen from Obi Island itself. Farmers from the villages of Laiwui, Jikotamo, Buton and Akegula regularly provide vegetables such as bitter melons or known as pare, cucumbers, as well as fresh fruits like watermelon and melon. Meanwhile, fish are sourced from local fishermen in the nearby villages of Kawasi, Soligi, Mano and Madopolo. This collaboration not only ensures a reliable food supply but also empowers the local community.
 
Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel Ifan Farianda highlights how important local farmers and fishermen are in supplying food for employees, showing the company’s commitment to supporting these communities. Through its Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) program, Harita Nickel promotes a “One Village, One Product” strategy to improve the welfare of nearby villages. The aim is to help these villages create unique products that can be sold to the company and beyond.
 
“There are about ten villages in the vicinity of the company, each with its own farmer and fisherfolk groups that we support. Our aim is to propel these villages toward the One Village, One Product initiative, ensuring a consistent supply to the industrial area from each community,” Ifan explains.
 
By integrating local farmers and fishermen into its food supply chain, Harita Nickel not only secures a steady stream of quality food but also strengthens the economy of Obi Island. The economic turnover from the agricultural and fishing sectors only reaches a staggering Rp 13 billion per month, making this collaboration a win-win solution for all parties involved.

To enhance information accessibility and foster community participation, Harita Nickel has rolled out a Roadshow for the Harita Gemilang Scholarship across 34 villages in five districts of Obi Island. Running from October 9 to 17, 2024, this event serves as a vibrant platform for interaction among various stakeholders, including district and village officials as well as the parents of students. 
 
“For the company, this initiative is not merely about promoting scholarships; it’s about building strong bonds and trust between Harita Nickel and the local community to create a brighter future for the youth of Obi,” explains Ifan Farianda, Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel.Harita Gemilang Scholarship program is part of Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM) in the education sector, which focuses on supporting students from Obi Island. “The goal is not only to achieve academic success, but also to shape future leaders who can drive the nation's progress, particularly on Obi Island,” Ifan said, underscoring the broader vision behind the Harita Gemilang scholarship program.
 
The Harita Gemilang scholarships are divided into two main categories: the Harita Gemilang Prestasi Scholarship for students with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 and above, and the Harita Gemilang Harapan Scholarship for those with GPAs ranging from 3.0 to 3.5. Recipients will receive educational assistance ranging from IDR 5,000,000 to IDR 7,500,000 per semester, depending on the category awarded.
 
The local community, including village and district governments, responded positively to the program. The district head of Obi, Ali La Jarahiya, appreciates the scholarship initiative, noting that it greatly helps families with education costs. “This scholarship provides better support for the community, especially in covering the expenses of higher education,” he says.
 
Ali also emphasizes the importance of the program's sustainability and his readiness to assist in promoting it within the village governments, ensuring that more community members are aware of and can benefit from the opportunity.

Shaping Obi Island’s Future: Harita Gemilang Scholarship for Tomorrow’s Leaders

Integrated and sustainable nickel mining and processing company Harita Nickel has launched the ‘Harita Gemilang Scholarship’, a program for Undergraduate- and Diploma-level students native to Obi Island in South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province. With this program, it is hoped that young people on Obi Island will be more motivated to continue their education to college level, thereby supporting the emergence and development of high-quality human resources in the region.
This scholarship is valid for one year (two semesters), with funding distributed per semester. In total, there will be 60 recipients of the Harita Gemilang academic scholarship, with places allocated as follows: 15 spaces on the GEMILANG Prestasi (Bachelor's Degree) scholarship; 20 on the GEMILANG Harapan (Bachelor's Degree) scholarship; and 25 on the GEMILANG Harapan (Diploma) scholarship.
<h2>A. Recipient Requirements
</h2>
Applicants for the Harita GEMILANG scholarship program must fulfill the following requirements:

<ol><li>Must be Indonesian citizens;</li><li>Domiciled in and originating from Obi Island (Obi District, North Obi District, East Obi District, West Obi District, or South Obi District);</li><li>Registered as active students in their respective departments/study programs in the current academic year, as evidenced by registered UKT/SPP payments (minimum accreditation B);</li><li>During the scholarship period, students will not apply for academic leave;</li><li>Will be well-behaved, diligent/studious, active, and demonstrate a strong willingness/motivation to succeed;</li><li>At the time of registration, should be between semester II (minimum) and semester VII (maximum) for Bachelor’s studies, or semester V for Diplomas;</li><li>Willing to comply with all applicable provisions relevant to scholarship recipients and other requirements;</li><li>Not currently subject to academic or non-academic sanctions due to violations of the code of ethics and/or other applicable regulations;</li><li>Not currently registered as a recipient of other assistance;</li><li>Have a GPA (grade point average) as follows: a. Bachelor's Degree - GEMILANG Prestasi :&nbsp;GPA ≥ 3.5 b. Bachelor's Degree - GEMILANG Harapan :&nbsp;GPA 3.0–3.5 c. Diploma - GEMILANG :&nbsp;GPA ≥ 3.0</li></ol>

<h2>B. Administrative Requirements
</h2>
Students who meet the above requirements may submit the following administrative documents in soft copy (e.g., PDFs):

<ol><li>A completed registration form (Google Doc);</li><li>A recent color portrait photo;</li><li>Frontal view photo of house/residence (in focus);</li><li>Photocopy of personal and family ID (KTP & KK);</li><li>Photocopy of valid student card;</li><li>Proof of UKT or SPP payment registered in the current semester;</li><li>Study Result Card (KHS) signed by the Head of Section in each faculty in the current semester;</li><li>Active Lecture Certificate (Active Student) from campus;</li><li>Official written confirmation of no academic sanctions from each faculty;</li><li>A statement letter confirming the applicant will not request leave, change study programs, and/or move to another university while enrolled on the scholarship program;</li><li>A statement letter confirming the applicant is not currently receiving a scholarship from any other source for the duration of the current academic year;</li><li>a. GEMILANG Prestasi: 
- Essay on "Sustainable Village Development" with subthemes covering education, health, the economy, socio-cultural aspects, and infrastructure. The essay should be a minimum of 1,000 words, formatted on A4 paper, using Times New Roman, size 11, with single line spacing.
 
- Motivation letter, introducing the applicant, their family background, reasons for applying, and future aspirations. The letter should be at least 1,000 words, formatted on A4 paper with Times New Roman, size 11, and 1.5 line spacing.
 
- Written plan detailing how the applicant intends to use the funds provided by the Harita Gemilang Scholarship.
 
b. GEMILANG Harapan:
 
- Motivation letter, introducing the applicant, their family background, reasons for applying, and future aspirations. The letter should be at least 1,000 words, formatted on A4 paper with Times New Roman, size 11, and 1.5 line spacing. - Written plan detailing how the applicant intends to use the funds provided by the Harita Gemilang Scholarship.</li><li>Photocopy of certificates regarding non-academic achievements/rankings (if any).</li><li>An active bank account with a minimum balance of IDR 200,000.</li></ol>
<h2>C. Scholarship Regulations
</h2>
If successful in their application for the Harita Gemilang scholarship, recipients are required to adhere to the following regulations:
<ol><li>Scholarships will be provided for 1 (one) year, covering 2 (two) semesters. Payment will be made on a per-semester basis;</li><li>For the duration of the GEMILANG scholarship program, participants are prohibited from: a. Receiving any other scholarship and/or other similar educational assistance; b. Applying for leave (for any reason), changing study programs and/or moving to another university; c. Violating any regulations stipulated by the university where the participant is studying; d. Engaging in any activities that violate the laws of the Republic of Indonesia; e. Displaying antagonistic conduct or actions that could otherwise be deemed detrimental to the government, companies, or universities; f. If the participant is proven to have committed a violation as per points 2a-e, the scholarship will be rescinded and they will be ineligible to receive any scholarships from Harita Nickel in the future.</li><li>During the Gemilang scholarship program, participants are asked to create a community development program that can be implemented either at the study location or in their local neighborhood (during college holidays). All activities are then documented and reported in full.</li></ol>
