Water management has emerged as a key indicator of corporate sustainability amid growing pressures from climate change and industrial expansion. This is especially critical in the mining sector and its downstream, which is characterized by high water consumption and significant potential for environmental impact.
Harita Nickel has recognized these challenges from the beginning as part of the nickel processing and refining ecosystem on Obi Island. In its <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/files/sustainability_assets/Laporan%20Keberlanjutan%20Harita%20Nickel%202024.pdf">2024 Sustainability Report</a>, the company recorded a total water withdrawal of 867,835 megaliters (ML), with 91% of that amount&mdash;or approximately 787,902 ML&mdash;sourced from seawater. This seawater is used to replace freshwater, especially for the cooling process of power plants.

In addition, 38,764 ML&mdash;or around 4% of the total water used&mdash;was sourced from rainwater collected within the operational area. This strategy reflects a proactive approach to reduce reliance on limited freshwater by using rainwater.

Beyond utilizing seawater and rainwater, Harita Nickel has also implemented a comprehensive water reuse strategy. More than 10 million cubic meters (m³) of water have been successfully recycled for various purposes, including sediment control and other operational needs.

To support effective sediment control, Harita Nickel has constructed and manages more than 52 sedimentation ponds within the Mining Business License (IUP) areas of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) and PT Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS). These ponds are designed to capture sediment particles carried by mining activities before the water is discharged into the environment, per the government's regulated standard.

“Harita Nickel’s initiatives deserve recognition. When I first visited, the existing infrastructure was not yet optimal. However, during my most recent visit to Obi, I observed that they had built a significantly larger sediment pond compared to other nickel mines,” said Dr. Ir. Muhammad Sonny Abfertiawan, S.T., M.T., Lecturer and Researcher in Water and Wastewater Engineering at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).

One of the largest sediment ponds is located at the Tuguraci 2 site, with a water retention capacity of 924,000 cubic meters and an area of approximately 42 hectares. The sedimentation process in this pond helps reduce water turbidity and ensures that the water quality meets the required standards, particularly for pH and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) parameters. This large pond is equipped with a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) to ensure that the water that comes out meets quality standards. Daily monitoring is also carried out at licensed compliance points, and sediment material is regularly removed from the pond and placed in a former mine for reclamation. The treated water from this pond is also reused.

Daily monitoring is conducted at authorized discharge points, and when sediment levels reach 70% of the pond's capacity, dredging is performed to maintain the pond’s operational efficiency.

According to Sonny, the initial step in managing mining water is understanding its characteristics.

“Each mining operation has unique conditions. For example, two coal mines located close to each other may have different water qualities. One mine’s water is acidic and contains high levels of sulfides, while the other’s is not acidic. Therefore, it’s essential to assess both the volume and quality of the water to determine the most suitable treatment approach,” he explained.

Based on his research, Sonny highlighted that nickel mine water in Indonesia typically has a neutral to alkaline pH (8-9), with most heavy metals suspended, making them relatively easy to settle. However, when dissolved metals such as Cr6 are present, special treatment is required, typically involving reduction using ferrous sulfate (FeSO₄).

To ensure that both mining water and treated wastewater meet the regulated standards, Harita Nickel has implemented a comprehensive water quality monitoring system. This system is aligned with SPARING (Continuous and Online Industrial Wastewater Quality Monitoring System) as outlined by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Additionally, the company conducts regular water quality testing through both its internal laboratories and accredited third-party labs.

Looking ahead, Harita Nickel remains committed to advancing innovations in water management, focusing on enhanced efficiency and environmental sustainability. These efforts are an integral part of the company’s long-term commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and Goal 13 (Climate Action).

With a dynamic and integrated approach, Harita Nickel underscores that sustainable water management is not only feasible but essential to ensuring the continued success of both the industry and the environment.

Sea Water, Rain Harvesting, Reuse—Harita Nickel’s Water Innovation Pipeline

On the southern coast of Obi Island, specifically in Soligi village, a community group called Tongke,&nbsp;which means “mangrove” in the local language, has long been caring for the mangrove forest that grows along their village’s shoreline. Formed independently in 2019, this group emerged from the local community’s growing awareness of the importance of protecting the environment that sustains their lives.
In recent years, collaboration with Harita Nickel has strengthened these conservation efforts. The synergy between local wisdom and the company’s technical support brings new hope for the sustainability of coastal ecosystems and the communities that rely on the sea and mangrove forests for their livelihoods.
 
The village of Soligi has a coastline stretching 1.7 kilometers and a mangrove ecosystem covering 23.01 hectares. The mangroves in this region play a vital role as barriers against coastal erosion, natural habitats for marine life, and carbon sinks that support climate change mitigation efforts.
 
Recognizing this strategic value, Harita Nickel has implemented a mangrove conservation program as part of its environmental and social responsibility. This program uses a participatory approach, emphasizing the active role of the community, particularly the Tongke group, at every stage of the initiative.

As a key partner in the initiative, the Tongke group receives comprehensive training and capacity-building support. This includes education on mangrove species, seedling cultivation techniques, site-specific planting methods, and monitoring and evaluation of conservation outcomes. These activities are designed to equip group members with the skills needed to manage the mangrove ecosystem independently and sustainably.
 
According to Ifan Farianda, Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel, “We aim to ensure that the presence of our company within the community also brings lasting benefits to the environment. This mangrove conservation initiative is not just for today, it is an investment in the future of Soligi Village.”
 
Throughout 2024, Harita Nickel and the Tongke group have planted 1,030 mangrove seedlings through various community-based activities. These efforts also involved students, local government representatives, and academic institutions such as Khairun University.
 
The selected species,&nbsp;Rhizophora mucronata and Rhizophora stylosa,&nbsp;were chosen based on their ecological compatibility with Soligi’s coastal conditions. Seedlings are cultivated and maintained at a nursery facility within the village, fully supported by the company to ensure long-term success and sustainability.
The Tongke group has also taken further steps by developing its own independent mangrove seedling business. This initiative allows them to produce high-quality mangrove seedlings, which are used for replanting efforts and also sold as a local product to neighboring villages across Obi Island.
 
Taher, Head of the Tongke group, shared, “Through these trainings, our understanding of mangroves has significantly deepened. We now recognize their vital role and feel more prepared to protect our village’s mangrove forests.”
 
Harmin Muhammad, Chairman of Soligi’s Village Consultative Body (BPD), expressed his aspirations, “We hope Harita Nickel will continue supporting not only mangrove conservation but also initiatives in healthcare, education, and agriculture. This is just the beginning of broader positive change.”
Beyond Soligi, Harita Nickel has expanded its conservation programs to other villages in South Halmahera Regency. Since 2021, over 67,000 mangrove seedlings have been planted across 23.04 hectares in four villages: Soligi (Obi District), Awango and Belang-Belang (Bacan District), and Guruapin (Kayoa District). These efforts are carried out through cross-sector collaboration involving universities, village governments, and local residents.
As the downstream nickel industry grows in Obi Island, Harita Nickel remains committed to ensuring that economic advancement goes hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility. Through clear vision, strategic partnerships, and long-term commitment, the path to a sustainable future is not just an ideal, but a reality in progress.

Tongke Group: A Community-Based Environmental Conservation Initiative

Harita Nickel has launched the third batch of its flagship program, PELITA (Youth Skills and Competency Development Program), as part of its commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment around its operational areas. This batch focuses on Mandarin language vocational training in response to the industry's evolving demands and increasing employment opportunities.
Ifan Farianda, Manager of Community Development at Harita Nickel, stated that PELITA is a cornerstone initiative within the company’s Community Development (PPM) framework. “Our goal is to empower young people in the communities around our operations with competencies that enhance their employability, both within local markets and on a broader scale,” said Ifan.

Previously, Harita Nickel successfully implemented the first and second batches of the PELITA program, which focused on technical training such as wheel loaders and overhead crane operations. In its third iteration, the program shifted its focus to Mandarin language training, recognizing the strategic importance of the language amid increasing foreign investment, particularly from China, which has introduced new communication challenges in operational settings.

“Mandarin has become one of the most important international languages today. With the growing presence of foreign partners and Chinese expatriate workers in Indonesia, there is a rising demand for local talent capable of communicating effectively in Mandarin,” Ifan explained.

To ensure high-quality delivery, Harita Nickel has partnered with Jakarta-based Mandarin training providers with international affiliations in Singapore. The program spans approximately six to seven months and is designed to guide participants through three internationally recognized HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) certification levels: HSK 1, HSK 2, and HSK 3.

A total of 30 participants have joined the Mandarin language training program, representing two of the company’s partner villages: Soligi and Kawasi. The program is structured into two categories: a regular class for high school graduates who are currently unemployed and a student class targeting Grade 11 and 12 high school students.

This strategic approach is designed to equip participants with essential skills early on, preparing them for future employment or higher education opportunities, including the potential to pursue further studies in China.

The training is anchored in the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) framework, an internationally recognized standard for Mandarin proficiency. Participants are expected to reach HSK Level 3, which provides sufficient language capability to support basic workplace communication, particularly in entry-level roles such as junior translators or administrative staff. The certification is intended to serve as a foundational credential that broadens employment prospects for youth in Harita Nickel’s surrounding communities.

Ifan also underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in ensuring the program’s success, ranging from village government support to actively involving participant’s families.

“We hope all parties will work together to ensure this program runs smoothly and delivers tangible benefits to the next generation living around Harita Nickel’s operational areas,” he concluded.

Harita Nickel Promotes Youth Competency Through Mandarin Language Training Program

In every successful operation, there are people who work quietly behind the scenes, ensuring everything runs without a hitch. At Harita Nickel, one of those key figures is Rifaldi “Bang Atta” Duwila, a name that has become familiar to many Insan Harita traveling in and out of Obi Island.
With his unmistakable voice, friendly demeanor, and signature sense of humor, Bang Atta is a regular presence at the ports of Kupal and Babang and at Oesman Sadik Airport in Labuha. Since 2019, he has been a cornerstone of the transport logistics team. First as a driver, and now as Foreman of the Labuha Representative Office (KPL).

“Every day is like solving a puzzle. I monitor everything: ship schedules, flight arrivals, the number of passengers, and available vehicles. If even one piece is missing, it could disrupt the whole system,” Atta shares.

Leading a team of four drivers, Atta is responsible for ensuring safe and timely travel for thousands of employees. But his work doesn’t pause, even on holidays. “One year, I had just finished the Eid prayer when I had to rush to Kupal Port; there were employees who needed urgent transport to the Obi site,” he recalls.

But to Atta, such moments are part of the job, a reflection of duty and devotion. He is quick to share credit with his team. “I can’t do the job alone. The KPL crew is exceptional. They know when to move fast and always act with compassion,” He says.&nbsp;

That spirit of service has made him a well-loved figure among employees. Hamdan Taher from PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) notes that Bang Atta is a constant presence during each leave cycle. “You always see him at the port or airport. Occasionally, he even speaks a bit of Mandarin to help our colleagues from China,” Hamdan says.

Bang Atta is a clear example that every role, no matter how small it may seem, can have a big impact on keeping the company running. In the midst of the nickel downstreaming industry in North Maluku, Bang Atta acts as a conduit between the diligent efforts of Harita Nickel employees and their yearning for their homeland. That is where the true meaning of dedication lies.

No Days Off: Bang Atta and the Heart of Harita’s Transport Team

On 27 March 2025, a loud siren echoed across the Nirwana office area on Obi Island. Within seconds, dozens of Harita Nickel employees rushed out of the building and quickly moved to the assembly point. It wasn’t a real emergency. It was an earthquake drill organized by the Emergency Response Team (ERT) from PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP) and PT Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS).

This drill is part of Harita Nickel’s regular efforts to train employees to respond to disasters. Notably, Harita Nickel’s Director of Operations, Younsel Evand Roos, joined the drill and played the role of an employee needing medical attention. His participation underscored the message that safety is a shared responsibility across all levels of the company.

A week later, on April 4, 2025, another emergency simulation took place at Panji Selatan Port. This time, the scenario involved a fuel spill caused by a leaking pipe at the fuel station. The ERT team responded quickly, using fire extinguishers and hydrants to control the situation. During the simulation, one responder pretended to suffer burns and was promptly treated with first aid equipment.

These drills are more than just routine exercises. For Harita Nickel, they’re a key part of responsible mining practices and ensuring everyone understands how to react if a real emergency happens.

Ngainur Rofiek, Head of Mining Engineering at GPS, highlighted the importance of these drills in developing practical skills. “Using safety equipment, performing evacuations, and giving first aid must be practiced regularly. These are essential for safety in the mining environment,” said Rofiek.

He also emphasized the value of teamwork. “Strong teamwork as one of our core values is critical in any emergency situation,” he added.

Muhammad Randy, one of the drill coordinators, noted that the scenarios mirror risk matrices required for the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) audit. “This is part of our continuous improvement to meet responsible mining standards,” he said.

These drills clearly show Harita Nickel’s commitment to prioritizing safety, building a culture of readiness, and upholding sustainable and responsible mining principles.

Earthquake and Fire Drills Sharpen Harita Nickel’s Emergency Readiness

At its core, mining is a paradox: humanity digs deep into the Earth to build the future, yet is often seen as damaging the very systems that sustain life.
In contrast, rivers flow gently and persistently&mdash;shaping valleys, sustaining ecosystems, offering life without taking. Where miners drill, rivers heal; where industry extracts, rivers remind us of sustainability
Philosophically, the relationship between mining and rivers often reflects the tension between anthropocentrism&mdash;the belief that nature exists for human use&mdash;and ecocentrism, which sees nature as having intrinsic value beyond its utility to humanity.
 
Mining embodies humanity’s Promethean impulse: to control, to reshape, and to extract. Rivers, on the other hand, symbolize a different kind of wisdom&mdash;the wisdom of adaptation, flow, and reciprocity.
 
When we mine thoughtlessly, we risk severing the ancient bond between humans and nature, reducing the Earth to a mere resource rather than a relationship. “Nature is not just raw material&mdash;it’s a structured, meaningful system,” said Aristotle (384 BC–322 BC).

The real question is: Can we mine ethically? Can we extract without disrupting the flow?
A sustainable future does not lie in halting extraction altogether, but in reshaping the conditions under which it occurs&mdash;with humility, restraint, and respect for systems older and wiser than ourselves. For Heraclitus (535 BC – 475 BC), the ancient Greek philosopher, wisdom lies in understanding the natural flow&mdash;not in attempting to dominate it.
A 4,000-kilometer journey from Bandung was undertaken by a research team from the Water and Wastewater Engineering Research Group, Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Institut Teknologi Bandung, to Obi Island, home to Harita Nickel’s mining site.
To us, Obi Island in North Maluku is not just a point on the Indonesian map. It is a living space&mdash;a beautiful landscape embracing tropical forests, the clear flow of the Akelamo River, and a mineral-rich earth harboring nickel&mdash;a metal now at the heart of the global energy revolution.
We followed its course&mdash;from Lake Karo to where it meets the Maluku Sea. The Akelamo River flows with a spirited energy, its current swift and relentless, meandering across the land like a taut silver thread stretched over the earth.
 
Though not deep&mdash;its clear, rippling surface reveals ancient Pre-Tertiary to Quaternary rocks and minerals, as well as quick darting fish beneath&mdash;it stretches wide with generosity, embracing the riverbanks with open arms. It carries a voice: a soft, rushing whisper that echoes through the trees.
 
On both sides, the landscape unfolds in quiet majesty: tall grasses and trees sway rhythmically in the wind, while hills rise gently in the distance, standing like sentinels over the flowing stream.
Birds glided along the water’s edge, their wings catching the glint of sunlight, while small creatures danced across the surface as if carried by the river’s breath.
 
The air was fresh, tinged with the scent of damp earth and wildflowers. This was not a deep or hidden river&mdash;it was a river that is present, moving, and beautiful. It does not boast; what it offers&mdash;moments of peace, scenes worth remembering, and a quiet reminder that even the gentlest water can shape a landscape with grace.
 
Though mining lies not far from its source, though trucks rumble along nearby roads and the land bears signs of human ambition, the river refuses to lose its soul.
 
It still sings. It still reflects the sky, cradles fish beneath its surface, and draws Ornithoptera aesacus butterflies to its banks. As if nature is offering us a second chance&mdash;a moment to pause and ask: What kind of future do we wish to shape here?
 
Perhaps the most remarkable thing is this: the river is still beautiful.
Because not all mining must end in destruction. There are those who have begun to listen&mdash;to the river, to communities, and to the Earth. They speak of Good Mining Practices: of reclamation and revegetation, of controlled runoff and waste management, of community engagement.
 
They design operations that respect buffer zones, monitor and manage water quality, and work not against the landscape, but with it. It is not perfect&mdash;but it is possible. And it is necessary.
 
The Promethean drive is not without criticism or ethical concerns. The growing spectrum of anthropogenic existential threats to human civilization and survival has prompted calls for a new framework of existential security&mdash;one that prioritizes the continuity of humanity (Sears, 2020).
 
Moreover, more than 1,700 scientists have warned of the potential consequences of unchecked environmental destruction, underscoring the urgent need for responsible stewardship of the Earth (Ripple et al., 2017).

Responsible mining practices are essential for preserving river ecosystems. With careful planning and the implementation of sustainable techniques, a balance between mining operations and healthy river systems can be achieved&mdash;one that benefits both industry and the environment.
 
Sustainability, therefore, is not the absence of change&mdash;but the presence of wisdom. It means choosing methods that minimize harm, restore what has been taken or damaged, and ensure that future generations, too, can sit by this river, hear its shimmering murmur, and feel gratitude&mdash;not sorrow.
 
The future of humanity does not have to stand in opposition to nature&mdash;it can be an extension of it. Our cities can be powered by clean energy built from responsibly mined materials. Our children can inherit both innovation and untouched forests, along with future forests growing on lands once mined.

A river can still run strong and clean&mdash;if we remember that progress without respect is merely another form of destruction. Stoic thinkers and philosophers like Zeno, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius believed in living in harmony with nature and accepting one’s place in the cosmos&mdash;a unified, rational, and living order governed by logos, the divine intelligence that structures the universe.
 
And the Akelamo River keeps flowing&mdash;wide, swift, shallow, clear, and beautiful&mdash;asking nothing from us except: To learn. To change. To care. To build a future where mining and rivers, machines and mountains, humanity and nature, can exist not in conflict&mdash;but in warm conversation, perhaps over a cup of Ternate’s spiced coffee.
 
A future where the river still sings the song of life, not of loss. And from the Akelamo River, on Obi Island, we have learned that&mdash;bringing it home to the city of Bandung, as a story, and as knowledge drawn from the wisdom of the Creator’s natural design.

Akelamo River: Where Human-Nature Harmony Inspires Responsible Mining

Harita Nickel, through PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, has successfully implemented a Watershed Rehabilitation (Rehabilitasi Daerah Aliran Sungai or Rehab DAS) program covering 1,765 hectares (ha) at Tigalalu protected forest area in Kayoa Island and Laluin Island, South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province. Mufti Sodik, Forestry Permitting & Compliance Manager of Harita Nickel, said watershed rehabilitation is part of the company's commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible mining practices.&nbsp;
As a Forest Area Use Approval Permit (IPPKH) holder, Harita Nickel has an obligation to rehabilitate watersheds in critical land cover forest areas. Planting activities are carried out by involving the surrounding community, while monitoring and evaluation are carried out by relevant agencies. Based on the assessment of the success rate of planting carried out in three stages, Harita Nickel was declared successful and has handed over the results of watershed rehabilitation planting to the government.

The rehabilitation approach integrates both ecological and social aspects. In addition to planting seven species of native plants, such as nutmeg, cloves, walnut, and cashew, the program actively involves local communities. These plant species were selected not only for their ability to restore ecosystems but also for their economic potential for surrounding communities.

“These plants not only represent the rich biodiversity of the Maluku Islands but also carry real economic value. Nutmeg and cloves, for instance, have been part of the spice economy in the archipelago for hundreds of years,” said Mufti Sodik, Forestry Permitting & Compliance Manager at Harita Nickel.

Until its completion at the end of 2024, the program has received praise from various stakeholders, including government officials and local leaders. More than just benefiting from the outcomes, the community has been involved from the very beginning. “Community members are engaged in everything, from planting to maintenance,” Mufti added.

Nurbaity Radjiloen, Head of the South Halmahera Forest Management Unit, expressed her appreciation. “As local authorities, we are truly grateful to see the positive results of this watershed rehabilitation program. Hopefully, it can be replicated in other areas across South Halmahera,” Nurbaity explained.&nbsp;

Echoing that sentiment, Sukur Lila, Head of the North Maluku Forestry Department, emphasized that the program addresses both environmental and community economic concerns.

“Harita Nickel has demonstrated goodwill through the Watershed Rehabilitation program, which aims to protect the environment, especially forests in North Maluku, while also generating economic benefits for local communities,” said Sukur.

One of the program’s key strengths is the involvement of local residents. Rum Saleh, a community leader from Guruapin Village, expressed pride in the program, which he sees as a tangible opportunity for locals.&nbsp;

“This program is expected to bring economic benefits to our people. The community’s direct participation in planting and other activities makes us feel involved and valued,” Rum explained.&nbsp;

A watershed is more than just a waterway, it’s a vital part of the ecosystem. Without healthy vegetation, watersheds become vulnerable to floods, landslides, and soil degradation. This is what drove Harita Nickel to restore protected forests through an ecologically based watershed rehabilitation program.

This initiative is not just a formality, but a genuine expression of care for both the environment and local communities. “This rehabilitation effort not only improves natural conditions, but also reflects the company’s long-term commitment to conservation,” said Afian Eko Purnomo from the Ake Malamo Watershed Management Office.

Harita Nickel Rehabilitates 1,765 Hectares of Protected Forest in North Maluku

Harita Nickel's commitment to responsible and sustainable mining practices has earned appreciation from various parties. The Coordinator of the Mining Advocacy Consortium (KATAM) for North Maluku, Muhlis Ibrahim, stated that the presence of the integrated nickel mining and downstream processing company operating on Obi Island has made a positive contribution to the region’s economic growth.
This statement was made after his visit to the Harita Nickel site in Kawasi Village, Obi District, South Halmahera Regency, from April 19 to 21, 2025.

“I see a lot of changes compared to my last visit in 2022. Most notably, infrastructure development. This has significantly narrowed the infrastructure gap between villages and shortened the long economic chain,” said the mining practitioner.

During his second visit, one of the things that caught his attention was Harita Nickel’s Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM) through the Community Entrepreneurship Unit (UNIKK). It was recorded that the turnover from seven Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)&mdash;consisting of 42 local residents from two villages surrounding the company's operations&mdash;reached IDR 5 billion per year. These business units, primarily managed by housewives, operate in the culinary sector, ranging from supplying snacks to processing derivative products from nutmeg and soybeans, to managing cafés and mini-markets within the company’s area.

“The company not only equips residents with knowledge but also provides access to markets. Now, it's up to the community whether they want to seize this opportunity or not. Clearly, those who joined the company’s supported groups have already felt the benefits,” he explained.

During his visit, Muhlis also visited the new Kawasi Village settlement firsthand. He expressed his support for the resettlement of residents, as the old village, surrounded by the company's operational activities, was no longer safe for residents’ health and well-being. According to him, the South Halmahera Regency Government’s program, fully supported by Harita Nickel, to provide better housing with more complete facilities, is the right policy.

“Let’s not allow the community to become victims, used as a tool for conflict. As long as the old settlement remains, it will continue to be exploited to attack the company, with narratives portraying poverty and slum conditions in the midst of a thriving industrial area,” he emphasized, dismissing accusations that he said were not aligned with facts on the ground.

To those who remain skeptical of Harita Nickel, Muhlis encouraged them to visit and see firsthand the progress and initiatives carried out by the company. According to him, Harita Nickel is very open to receiving input.

Muhlis invites parties who are still skeptical towards Harita Nickel's commitment to stay in touch and establish good communication with the company. On the other hand, he also asked the company to open space for the community to convey input.

“For me, it is important that the company is more transparent regarding environmental management patterns, because this is a very sexy issue. The most dominant issue in every mining activity is environmental issues. So it's just a matter of how to be more open to explain to the public,” said the mining lecturer.

In addition to social aspects, Muhlis said Harita Nickel's commitment to environmental sustainability is in accordance with its practices in the field. He gave an example of the company's efforts in managing mine runoff water by preparing as many as 52 settling ponds. One of them is Tuguraci 2, the largest pond with an area of 43 hectares. These ponds are monitored regularly to ensure the water has met quality standards before being released to environmental bodies.&nbsp;

“Harita Nickel is a key asset for North Maluku. Let’s support them by continuously monitoring their commitment so that investment activities can proceed smoothly,” he said.

Concluding his visit, Muhlis expressed his appreciation for Harita Nickel’s consistent application of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles across its operations. He also hoped that Harita Nickel would set an example for other companies investing in North Maluku.

KATAM Urges Obi Residents to Support Harita Nickel as North Maluku’s Key Asset

As part of its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its mining and nickel processing operations, Harita Nickel has built two coal storage domes on Obi Island, North Maluku.
Each dome measures 600 meters in length and 140 meters in width, with a storage capacity of up to 370,000 tons of coal.

“These coal domes prevent coal dust from spreading into the environment. The dust stays inside the dome,” said Tonny Gultom, Director of Health & Safety Environment at Harita Nickel. He illustrated the massive size by comparing it to five football fields combined, all under one roof.

The domes are specially designed to be completely enclosed and are filled with inert gas to lower oxygen levels inside. This reduces the risk of fire and helps maintain coal quality. Beyond protecting the coal from weather exposure, the design also effectively prevents dust from escaping into the surrounding environment.

 Another key measure is the use of covered conveyor belts to transport coal from the dock to the storage domes at one of its business units, PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF). This system replaces trucks and heavy equipment, significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
“In fact, the use of conveyors has helped cut coal consumption in the smelter by 6.4%, which is equivalent to avoiding 271 tons of CO2e emissions,” he added. “We also use covered conveyor belts to deliver coal from the domes to the power plant,” he said.

While various innovations have been implemented, Harita Nickel remains committed to further minimizing its environmental footprint.
