As a key supplier to the EV battery chain, Harita Nickel ties growth to carbon‑smart operations. At its PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) HPAL plant on Obi Island, a waste‑heat recovery (WHR) system now converts exhaust heat into electricity, saving energy equivalent to 9 million litres of gasoline annually and avoiding 307,988 t CO₂e.
&nbsp;Circular thinking extends to the cafeteria. Harita Nickel has also taken a novel approach to waste by repurposing used cooking oil&mdash;generated from meal services for its 20,000 employees&mdash;into an alternative fuel for smelter operations. The reused oil replaces approximately 21% of thermal coal calories each day, reducing daily coal consumption by up to 10 metric tons. Director of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Tonny Gultom says the pilot program could be expanded if proven to be technically viable over the long term.

&nbsp;In the Obi Industrial Estate, Harita Nickel has installed solar panels for street lighting, generating 98 gigajoules of energy and cutting emissions by 42.83 tons of CO2e. Since 2023, biodiesel has also been used for transportation and power generation, yielding 908,220 gigajoules of energy and avoiding up to 45,011 tons of CO2e emissions.
Tonny emphasized that sustainability is the foundation of the company’s operations. “Responsible mining must deliver long-term benefits, not just economically, but also socially and environmentally,” said Tonny.&nbsp;

Harita Nickel Reinforces Commitment to Sustainable Practices through Energy Transition

In a room lined with occupational safety posters, Haryadi Ilyas quietly reviewed his agenda, fully focused on preparing the day’s priorities. That morning, he was organizing a range of activities to ensure the effective implementation of occupational health and safety (OHS) programs. As a Safety Compliance Officer at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL)&mdash;a joint venture subsidiary of Harita Nickel and Lygend Resources&mdash;his core responsibility is to oversee adherence to safety regulations and standards.
Known to his colleagues as Yadi, Haryadi began his career in OHS in 2019 as part of the Safety Field team at Harita Nickel. In this role, he was responsible for monitoring and enforcing safety protocols, ensuring that operations were conducted securely and that all personnel could return home safely at the end of each day.
 
After several years in field operations, Yadi was entrusted with a strategic position on the Safety Compliance team. His current responsibilities include leading various safety initiatives, analyzing incident and accident data, and coordinating safety audit preparations to maintain regulatory alignment and operational excellence.
 
A graduate of the Health Polytechnic of the Ministry of Health in Ternate, Yadi integrates his academic background in environmental health into his professional practice. While his career path has not followed a strictly linear trajectory, he remains confident in the relevance of his expertise&mdash;particularly in fostering safe, healthy, and compliant work environments. “Many aspects of industrial OHS are closely aligned with the knowledge I acquired during my studies,” he remarked.

Known for his adaptability and collaborative spirit, this native of Makian Island brings a strong drive and unwavering determination to his work. His career journey at Harita Nickel is a testament to how dedication and hard work can open doors to greater opportunities.
 
<h3>Leading the 2025 National OHS Month: A Defining Challenge</h3>

The year 2025 marked a significant milestone for Yadi, as he was entrusted with leading the organizing committee for the 2025 National Occupational Health&nbsp;and Safety (OHS) Month. For Yadi, this assignment brought a new and demanding set of experiences. He was tasked with coordinating a team composed of individuals from diverse backgrounds and business units&mdash;a formidable challenge, particularly since many of them had never previously worked together.
 
One of the primary hurdles was communication. For the first time, National OHS Month was being celebrated simultaneously across all business units under the Harita Nickel and Lygend Resources partnership.
 
“In the beginning, coordination was quite challenging, as we weren’t yet used to functioning as a single, unified team. However, over time, we developed an effective rhythm of communication, and we are now able to collaborate more cohesively,” he shared.
Behind the coordination challenges, Yadi recalls one particularly memorable moment during a community engagement program in Soligi Village. The activity served as a real-world demonstration of team cohesion on the ground. “During that program, we witnessed each team member’s initiative emerge naturally. The collaboration grew stronger because everyone was driven by a shared purpose,” he reflected.
 
Community enthusiasm was equally remarkable. More than 100 elderly residents participated in free health check-ups, and the villagers warmly welcomed every initiative implemented. From fire extinguisher (APAR) training and the Gemilang Nutrisi program on healthy eating habits, to dental health education for elementary students&mdash;all activities ran smoothly thanks to strong coordination between the organizing committee and the local community.
 
The culmination of the 2025 National OSH Month featured a Safety Talk with Prof. Dra. Fatma Lestari, M.Si., Ph.D., Director of the Disaster Risk Reduction Center (DRRC) at the University of Indonesia and Vice Chair of the National Occupational Safety and Health Council (DK3N). For Yadi, the discussion&mdash;centered around "Disaster Management in the Obi Island Nickel Industry"&mdash;offered valuable insights to Harita personnel on the critical importance of cultivating a safety-first culture.
 
“This event is more than a celebration&mdash;it’s a concerted effort to build a supportive and safety-oriented work culture,” he said. For him, it was a meaningful opportunity to strengthen synergy and embed a safety mindset throughout Harita Nickel’s operations.

Haryadi Ilyas: Advancing Safety, Protecting Lives

Harita Nickel is stepping up its commitment to environmental stewardship, implementing a comprehensive biodiversity monitoring programme across its reclamation and revegetation sites, as well as several operational zones on Obi Island, an area recognised for its rich ecological value.
According to Muharwan Syahroni, Deputy Head of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at Harita Nickel, the company conducts routine ecological surveys annually over a three-week period. The process, managed by independent third-party experts, focuses on tracking flora and fauna populations before, during, and after mining operations, including the reclamation phases.

“We conduct monitoring through independent partners to ensure objectivity. The aim is to assess the presence and condition of flora and fauna before mining begins, and to observe the recovery process following revegetation,” Syahroni explained.

Encouragingly, recent monitoring has shown signs of ecological recovery. Several native plant species have successfully re-established themselves in reclaimed areas, while sightings of local wildlife, particularly bird and reptile species, have also increased.

Notably, the populations of mammals, birds, herpetofauna, and insects are showing signs of stability. This includes species endemic to the Maluku Islands, such as the Green Flying Fox (Dobsonia viridis) and the Halmahera Cuckooshrike (Lalage aurea), both considered ecological treasures of the region.

In the insect category, researchers have identified 28 species of dragonflies from 8 families and 46 species of butterflies across 4 families. Their sustained presence is widely regarded as a strong bioindicator of environmental health and ecological integrity.

“In recent times, we’ve seen stable trends among several native species, including key endemics. Their continued presence signals that the ecological balance is being preserved,” said Syahroni.

Among the more visually striking species observed is the Black Sunbird (Cinnyris frenatus), a nectar-feeding bird commonly found among flowering trees in the revegetated zones. Its return indicates that a functioning ecosystem is gradually re-establishing itself.

Beyond the technical aspects of reclamation, Harita Nickel has also launched a company-wide environmental awareness campaign. The initiative emphasises a firm prohibition on wildlife hunting and disturbance, aimed at protecting vulnerable species and fostering long-term ecological resilience.

“We emphasise the importance of preserving the island’s biodiversity. Education around anti-poaching and environmental protection is a key part of our operations across all business units,” Syahroni added.

By integrating rigorous monitoring with on-the-ground education and habitat restoration, Harita Nickel is aiming to position itself not just as a leader in responsible nickel production, but also as a long-term steward of Obi’s ecological legacy.

Harita Nickel Strengthens Biodiversity Safeguards in Obi  Through Monitoring and Education

The commitment of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk or Harita Nickel to support the implementation of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) principles in its mining operations and nickel downstreaming on Obi Island, received positive appreciation from the central government.&nbsp;
Unmitigated, the appreciation was conveyed by three ministries at once. Namely the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves), the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK). Appreciation was conveyed when a team from the three ministries made a working visit to the Harita Nickel site on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku, in May 2023.

Fatma Puspitasari, Coordinator of Forest Utilization and Conservation Control at the Ministry, said that companies that prioritize ESG principles in their business practices and investments will integrate the principles of environmental conservation, social responsibility and good governance.&nbsp;

After reviewing directly to the Harita Nickel operational site, according to him, various Social and Environmental Responsibility (TSJL) activities that have been carried out by Harita Nickel and several of its subsidiaries operating on Obi Island are in line with ESG principles.&nbsp;

He gave an example of activities oriented towards environmental conservation including mangrove ecosystem maintenance programs, and coral reef transplantation. Social activities include empowering SMEs, strengthening the agricultural sector, and supporting the improvement of the quality of education for children on Obi Island.

“Regarding environmental management around the site, Harita Nickel's commitment to running an environmentally sustainable business is emphasized by signing a Joint Agreement and Cooperation Agreement with the Coordinating Ministry for Marves, KLHK and KKP in encouraging the achievement of the national mangrove rehabilitation target,” he said.

Before signing the mangrove rehabilitation cooperation with the government in 2022, he said, the company had carried out similar activities by cooperating with Khairun Ternate University and at the same time empowering local communities.

From the monitoring conducted, it is known that the mangrove land that has been rehabilitated by Harita Nickel since 2021 until mid-2023 is 23.73 ha. The locations are spread across four points in South Halmahera Regency, including Soligi Village in Obi District, Awango Village and Belang-Belang in Bacan District and Guruapin Village in Kayoa District.

Restoration Coordinator at the Directorate of Coastal and Small Island Utilization, Directorate of Marine Spatial Management, KKP, Hery Gunawan Daulay emphasized the importance of mangroves for marine ecology. It is said, mangroves function as a buffer zone or buffer area to protect coastal areas from damage.

He gave appreciation to Harita Nickel and encouraged the ongoing program to maintain the mangrove land area from year to year.&nbsp;

In addition to appreciating the company's commitment to environmental sustainability, teams from the three ministries also gave appreciation for the company's efforts to carry out community empowerment activities around its operations. One of them is the SME mentoring program carried out by the company in Kawasi and Soligi Villages.

"One of the interesting things is SME development through training in tofu and tempeh making. Due to the remote distance, good tempeh is difficult to obtain. Local residents are trained to make tempeh by utilizing soybeans grown in the village fields and the products are purchased by the company for employee consumption," explained Fatma, calling this program a real benefit for local residents.

The team also visited schools in the villages surrounding Harita Nickel's operations.&nbsp; It can be seen that educational facilities and infrastructure for children on Obi Island, which is one of the 3T areas, are still limited. The team also gave appreciation for the support that has been provided by the company. Including school infrastructure improvement assistance and incentives for teachers.

Various activities that have been carried out by Harita Nickel in an effort to carry out its environmental and social responsibilities, are proof of the company's commitment to sustainable business governance according to ESG principles.

Kemenko Marves Named Harita Nickel an Eco and Social Impact Mining Company

Jakarta, April 15, 2025&nbsp;– PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (NCKL), also known as Harita Nickel, an integrated and sustainable nickel mining and processing company, has voluntarily submitted itself to undergo an audit process conducted by one of the world’s most rigorous independent assurance organizations, the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA). The audit, which began in October last year, is entering its second phase in April 2025. This marks the first time an integrated nickel mining and processing company in Asia has undertaken the IRMA audit process.
The IRMA-approved independent auditor in Indonesia, SCS Global Services (SCS), will assess whether the company, which operates in South Halmahera, North Maluku, has respected human rights, engaged with local communities, provided a safe, healthy, and supportive work environment, minimized environmental impacts, and contributed to a positive legacy. In total, more than 400 requirements under the IRMA Standard will be evaluated throughout the audit process. The assessment results will be published in a public audit report, released both locally and on the IRMA website.

“By volunteering to have its mining operations independently audited against the world’s most rigorous global mining standard, Harita Nickel is setting an unprecedented example of operational transparency in Indonesia’s mining sector," said Aimee Boulanger, Executive Director of IRMA, in a&nbsp;<a href="https://responsiblemining.net/tag/harita-nickel/" target="_blank">press release</a>&nbsp;issued when Harita Nickel initiated the audit process.

The spirit of aligning national industry practices with global standards, as demonstrated by Harita Nickel, not only ensures long-term benefits for communities and the environment but also reflects the growing recognition of Indonesia’s nickel industry as being in line with the highest global compliance standards. This alignment is particularly important given nickel’s critical role in supporting the energy transition and the increasing global demand for responsibly sourced nickel.

Since its inception, Harita Nickel has demonstrated a strong spirit of continuous improvement; using assurances and due diligence reports as some of the tools to identify areas for improvement where the company will take a phased approach towards improvement. Before commencing its mining operations, Harita Nickel obtained a range of academic studies that serve as the foundation for its responsible operational practices. As the processing and refining of nickel ore intensifies, Harita Nickel’s environmental management practices have also evolved to meet higher standards. The Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF) has been implemented in former mining excavation areas, complete with a comprehensive water management system and testing procedures that significantly enhance tailings management safety and prevent water contamination risks.

Harita Nickel implements&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iu1195SUCnI&t=83s" target="_blank">marine environmental management</a>&nbsp;to monitor and protect marine ecosystems around the company’s activities. Management includes water quality, plankton, benthos, fish and coral as well as other indicators of marine environmental health.

"The compliance status obtained from this audit confirms that Harita Nickel's risk management system has been implemented in accordance with applicable standards. IRMA Audit: Harita Nickel’s Affirmation of Its Commitment to Sustainability

Strengthening ESG Integration Across the Value Chain

Harita Nickel, through its two subsidiaries, PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk and PT Gane Permai Sentosa, successfully achieved the Company Performance Rating Assessment Program (Proper) award for the period 2023-2024 with a Blue predicate from the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia. This award recognized the company's commitment in implementing sustainable environmental management.
The award was presented at the Proper 2024 Environmental Award held at Sasono Langen Budoyo, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Jakarta, on Monday (24/2/2025).&nbsp;

Tonny mentioned a number of Harita Nickel's achievements in environmental management, including its successful post-mining reclamation program covering ± 231.53 hectares by 2024. Some of the former mining land, he added, is currently covered with plants and inhabited by various types of endemic animals from North Maluku.&nbsp;

Based on the results of biodiversity monitoring conducted by an independent third party, it was found that the flora and fauna ecosystem in the operational area of Harita Nickel remains well-preserved. From the 2024 monitoring results, a total of 10 plant species were recorded as being used in the reclamation area, and 8 plant species were identified in the Obi Industrial Area, consisting of secondary forests and shrubs, including Red Jabon, Kayu Putih, Bintangur, and Mahogany.

Meanwhile, for wildlife species classified within the taxa of mammals, bird populations, herpetofauna, and insects show a stable trend. This includes several endemic species unique to the Maluku Islands, such as the Green Dobson (Dobsonia viridis) and the Halmahera Cicadabird (Lalage aurea).

Under the insect category, the study recorded 28 dragonfly species from 8 families and 46 butterfly species from 4 families. The presence of dragonflies and butterflies indicates that the quality of the environment is maintained.

"We have also succeeded in revitalizing the nursery this year, by increasing the capacity of our land area for nurseries equipped with modern facilities,” he added. The nursery facility, named Loji Central Nursery, has an area of ± 2.8 hectares and a capacity of ± 400,000 seedlings. This increase in nursery capacity is expected to meet the growing demand for seedlings to support the post-mining reclamation program.

 Meanwhile, Head of Mining Engineering of PT Gane Permai Sentosa, Ngainur Rofiek, said that this year's Blue Proper award from the Ministry of Environment is the second time for the company after previously receiving the same predicate for the 2021-2022 period. According to him, the success in maintaining this achievement shows the company's consistency in implementing Good Mining Practices, including technical aspects, work safety and environmental management.&nbsp;

“Of course we will not stop here. This achievement is a motivation for us to further improve the company's performance. In the future, it is not limited to fulfilling regulations, but also making sustainable innovations,” he concluded.&nbsp;

Proper 2024 was participated by 4,495 companies from various sectors. As a result of the performance evaluation, the level of company compliance during the 2023-2024 period amounted to 2,961 compliant companies, 1,329 non-compliant companies, and 205 companies not yet operating. In the non-compliant group, there are 16 companies with black status –the lowest level for companies that are considered to have committed environmental damage. Whereas in Proper 2023 there were no black status companies, then this became a special concern for the government to make Proper mandatory starting in 2025.&nbsp;

Harita Nickel Achieved Blue Proper Award from the Ministry of Environment

Harita Nickel has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility by implementing best practices throughout its operations on Obi Island. As part of this commitment, the company's Health, Safety & Environment Department partnered with the Disaster Risk Reduction Center of Universitas Indonesia (DRRC UI) to organize the&nbsp;Kawasi Siaga Bencana&nbsp;(Kawasi Disaster Preparedness) program.
The program took place over four days, from December 10–13, 2024, in the newly developed settlement of Kawasi Village. Participants included residents, school students, village officials, and other stakeholders. The event provided training on disaster and earthquake preparedness, including basic firefighting techniques and First Aid (P3K). The program concluded with a tsunami emergency response and evacuation simulation.

Supriyanto Suwarno, Occupational Health and Safety Manager at Harita Nickel, explained that the disaster preparedness training was conducted as a precautionary measure against potential disasters in the company’s operational area. According to a risk assessment conducted by DRRC UI, Kawasi Village is vulnerable to various natural hazards, including earthquakes, strong winds, high waves, floods, and tsunamis.

“This&nbsp;Kawasi Siaga Bencana&nbsp;activity is part of Harita Nickel's commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility. It is an extension of our efforts in Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental Protection (K3LH), which also prioritize community safety around our operational areas,” Suwarno noted.

The program was warmly welcomed by Kawasi residents. Reinhar Siar, Chairperson of Kawasi Village’s Consultative Body (BPD), expressed gratitude for Harita Nickel’s initiative, stating that it greatly supported government efforts to raise awareness about disaster preparedness and management.

“Residents are very pleased to have this opportunity because it makes us more vigilant about potential disasters and teaches us what to do. This training is not just for natural disasters but also for other emergencies that could occur at any time,” said Siar, thanking Harita Nickel and Universitas Indonesia for organizing the event.

The&nbsp;Kawasi Siaga Bencana&nbsp;program involved Harita Nickel’s Emergency Response Team (ERT), which supported the hands-on training sessions and tsunami evacuation simulation. Additionally, medical teams from both the company and local government, Harita Nickel’s Community Relations team, and personnel from the TNI/Polri (Indonesian Armed Forces and Police) participated in the event.

Devi Partina Wardani, coordinator of DRRC UI, emphasized the importance of involving communities and stakeholders in disaster response efforts to minimize casualties during emergencies. “Through theoretical and practical training, as well as simulations, we aim to provide participants with a clear understanding of the necessary steps to take during disasters,” she explained.

The four-day program demonstrated excellent coordination among the participating parties, according to the DRRC UI team. The participants’ enthusiasm was equally notable, as they actively engaged in every session from start to finish.

“We highly appreciate Harita Nickel’s initiative in organizing this event. Hopefully, it serves as a constant reminder for the community, ensuring they know what to do when disaster strikes,” Wardani concluded.

Harita Nickel Collaborates with DRRC UI to Launch "Kawasi Disaster Preparedness" Program

Harita Nickel’s mining and nickel ore processing operations are deeply committed to environmental safety, particularly in ensuring that the water discharged from mining areas poses no threat to the surrounding ecosystems. Given that the company’s operational areas border vital aquatic zones, which are home to diverse marine life and crucial to the livelihoods of local fishermen, this commitment takes on added urgency.
To protect the quality of water leaving the mine, the company has created 52 settling ponds across two mining licenses. Thirty-five of these ponds are managed by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada, and the other seventeen by PT Gane Permai Sentosa. The largest pond, Tuguraci 2, has a capacity of 924,000 cubic meters and covers an area of 43 hectares.

Muhamad Riftadi Hidayat, a Senior Mine Hydrology Engineer at PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, highlights the importance of settling ponds in capturing sediment from soil, rock, and other materials eroded by mining. If not managed, these particles could pollute the environment. “These ponds are essential for keeping the water clean and safe before it's released back into the waterways,” he says.

The settling ponds are carefully designed to allow water to effectively filter out sediment before it is returned to its natural flow. This process ensures that the discharged water is clear and meets strict government quality standards.

At Harita Nickel, managing the settling ponds involves monitoring water quality parameters like pH and Total Suspended Solids (TSS). Dedicated teams from various business units perform daily checks to ensure they meet strict environmental standards.

Indra Maizar, Environmental Superintendent at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, explains the importance of regular maintenance. The company regularly dredges the ponds when sediment builds up to 70 percent of their capacity. “When sediment reaches 80 percent, we use heavy machinery to deepen the pond,” Indra says.

Dredging prevents sediment buildup from reducing capacity and keeps the water clear before it flows into places like the Todoku River. “Pond Tuguraci 2 can handle water flow rates of 10,000 to 50,000 cubic meters per hour, even during heavy rain,” he adds. The pond also has a retention time of 10 to 15 hours, which helps ensure that upstream water is clear before being released.

“These ponds clearly show the company’s commitment to protecting the environment around the mine,” Indra says. “They also reflect one of Harita Nickel’s core values: teamwork. All business units will keep working toward sustainability and environmental conservation in our operational areas.”

Collaborating for a Greener Future: Harita Nickel's Water Management Initiative

Operating along the coastal stretch of Obi Island in North Maluku, Harita Nickel has been recognized with a Green Rating by CNBC Indonesia, a testament to the company's long-term commitment to preserving both marine and terrestrial ecosystems surrounding its nickel mining operations.
Since 2010, Harita Nickel has routinely monitored water quality near Kawasi Village, which borders the company’s industrial zone. Independent studies conducted by the Bogor Agricultural Institute and Khairun University in Ternate confirm that seawater in the area remains healthy and capable of sustaining marine life. “Obi waters are fertile due to high chlorophyll content. Marine productivity remains intact,” said Prof. Dr. M. Janib Achmad of Khairun University. Similarly, Prof. Dr. Inneke Rumengan of Sam Ratulangi University observed stable marine biodiversity from 2015 through 2021.

To ensure oceanic health, Harita Nickel has invested in an array of monitoring technologies including survey vessels, CTD sensors, multiparameter gauges, and remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), essential tools for accessing aquatic zones beyond the reach of divers. The company has also developed artificial coral reefs made from nickel slag, aimed at enhancing fish populations and bolstering the livelihoods of local fishermen.

“To date, we have deployed 1,696 artificial reef units around our operational waters. Marine environmental protection has always been our top priority,” said Windy Prayogo, Environmental Marine Compliance Manager at Harita Nickel. 

Research from the two universities also identified key marine species such as thresher sharks, blacktip reef sharks, and the endangered Napoleon wrasse. Local fisherman Saidi Jouronga dismissed allegations of marine pollution in the area. “It’s not true that Kawasi waters are ‘dirty’ or lifeless. I was born here and fish here daily. On land, Harita Nickel monitors biodiversity across a 5,000-hectare mining area. In 2023 alone, the company documented more than 290 plant and animal species, including 29 endemic to the region. Notably, 30% of its industrial area has been designated as green space and wildlife corridors.
