Harita Nickel is reinforcing its community engagement efforts through a series of social and religious programs during Ramadan. On March 15-16, 2025, the company hosted a Tabligh Akbar in Soligi and Kawasi, featuring Islamic scholar Ustad KH. Dr. (C) H. Asep Sofyan, Lc, M.Pd. Addressing 300 attendees in Soligi and 150 in Kawasi, he emphasized the importance of maintaining strong social ties.
“A good relationship with others brings blessings, longevity, and new opportunities,” Ustad Asep said to the congregation.

As part of its Ramadan initiatives, Harita Nickel provided financial aid to 117 orphans and distributed 369 Eid gift packages. The company continued its outreach with a Safari Ramadan program in Laiwui on March 22, distributing 600 additional aid packages and supporting 255 orphans across seven villages, including Baru, Akegula, Laiwui, Buton, Jikotamo, Sambiki, and Anggai. 
Local leaders acknowledged the significance of these efforts. “This assistance is meaningful, especially for those in need, and we hope this partnership continues,” said Amir Lasiti, head of Buton village.

Harita Nickel sees these initiatives as part of its long-term commitment to social responsibility. "We are committed to delivering sustainable and impactful contributions to the communities in our operational areas," said Riyadi Supriadi, the company’s Community Relations Manager.

The company plans to sustain and expand its social programs, strengthening its role as a trusted partner in the region.

Strengthening Bonds Through Faith:  Harita Nickel’s Ramadan Outreach in Obi

In observance of the holy month of Ramadan, Harita Nickel once again distributed essential assistance to residents of Kawasi Village, the community closest to its operational area. The support, comprising food packages and fuel, was provided in two phases: March 2–3 and March 28–29, 2025.
As part of the company's corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, Harita Nickel distributed staple goods including rice, cooking oil, sugar, and 2,000 liters each of gasoline, kerosene, and diesel fuel. This assistance aims to help residents meet essential needs during Ramadan and provide additional support for Eid celebrations.

Community Development Manager Ifan Farianda emphasized that the initiative reflects the company’s continuous commitment to the local community's well-being. "As part of the Obi Island community, Harita Nickel wants to ensure residents can observe Ramadan peacefully. This aid also serves as moral support as the community prepares for Eid," Ifan said.

The aid was warmly welcomed by the Kawasi residents. Risnawati, a housewife, expressed her gratitude, stating that the aid significantly supports the community during Ramadan and Eid preparations. “We receive this assistance every year,” she said.

Similarly, Saidi Jouronga, another resident, also thanked Harita Nickel for its ongoing support. “The company’s concern is not limited to Ramadan and Eid; it continuously helps in various other moments. Harita Nickel Shares Ramadan Blessings  with Kawasi Residents

That morning, dozens of Soligi villagers visited Salam Kawasi, an integrated agricultural learning center established by Harita Nickel for surrounding communities on Obi Island, South Halmahera. Organized by the Community Development team, this Edugathering aimed to share knowledge and practical insights on integrated agriculture directly with residents.
Mohammad Mona Putra, Agriculture & Fishery Superintendent at Harita Nickel, explained that this event specifically invited the Women Farmers Group (KWT) and the Soligi United Fishermen Group (KNSB). Apart from knowledge transfer, the gathering was intended to strengthen relationships between the company and the community, fostering a more solid partnership moving forward.

He highlighted that the company offers numerous opportunities for local communities to fulfill food supply demands for more than 20,000 Harita Nickel employees. Many food needs are currently sourced from outside Obi Island due to limited local suppliers.

Participants toured the five-hectare Salam Kawasi area, seeing the demonstration plots planted with vegetables such as mustard greens, cayenne peppers, and fruits like California papayas and golden melons grown in a greenhouse. The area also features freshwater fish ponds, compost houses, and goat barns.

Guided by Albertus Darukumara and Lukmanul Hakim, facilitators from Harita Nickel's agriculture and fisheries programs, residents enthusiastically engaged in interactive discussions, particularly regarding the transformation of organic waste, such as goat manure and vegetable scraps, into compost to improve soil fertility.

Albertus explained that Salam Kawasi was previously barren, but the integrated farming techniques have significantly improved its fertility. He hoped this model would inspire local villagers to adopt similar practices.

Ibrahim, head of KNSB, said the visit provided valuable insights, particularly on freshwater aquaculture&mdash;a new concept for most fishermen in Obi. Similarly, Nur Kasim, a new KWT member, expressed interest in intensively cultivating her land for horticulture to meet local food needs independently.

Children attending the event also enjoyed learning through play, supervised by Harita Nickel’s education team. “We are grateful for the company's warm welcome. We can learn about agriculture while our children and grandchildren enjoy playing and learning together,” said Nur Kasim.

The Edugathering is part of Harita Nickel's Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) initiative, which fosters local economic independence while preserving the community’s traditional knowledge. Harita Nickel invited Soligi residents to learn integrated agriculture at Salam Kawasi

In collaboration with the South Halmahera Health Office, Harita Nickel recently conducted a public education session focused on preventing infectious diseases in the new settlement of Kawasi Village, Obi Island. The event aimed to raise community awareness about disease prevention and early detection.
A total of 37 community members participated enthusiastically. dr. Muhammad Iqbal Raka, Site Doctor at Harita Nickel, provided comprehensive insights into disease transmission and effective prevention methods and emphasized the importance of regular health screenings. The session also featured a consultation forum, allowing participants to discuss their health concerns openly.

During the educational session, Harita Nickel introduced the ABCDE principles as a prevention strategy, which include Abstinence (refraining from sexual activities outside committed relationships), Be faithful (loyalty to one partner), Condom use (consistent and correct condom use), Drug-free (avoiding drug use), and Education (accurate information and awareness about infectious diseases).

“Proper education and preventive measures are essential to protect yourself and others,” said dr. Raka.

Additionally, Asdiana Saibi, Head of Disease Prevention & Control at the South Halmahera Health Office, highlighted the critical role of public awareness, considering the high incidence of infectious diseases in the region. “Community awareness is key to disease prevention. Through this activity, we hope residents gain valuable knowledge on protecting themselves,” she stated.

The rhythmic sounds of Cakalele Dance music echoed through the new settlement in Desa Kawasi. On stage, young dancers performed with energy, moving in sync with the dynamic beats. The audience watched with enthusiasm&mdash;some cheering, others capturing the mesmerizing performance on their phones.
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative in socio-cultural development, Harita Nickel organized the Cakalele Dance Festival, providing a platform for local youth to celebrate and preserve their cultural heritage. More than just a performance, this event reflects the company’s commitment to supporting local traditions and fostering community cohesion.

The Cakalele Dance Festival is not a new initiative. Harita Nickel regularly organizes similar events, reinforcing its role in upholding the cultural heritage of North Maluku. Beyond being a showcase of tradition, the festival also serves as a highly anticipated competition, where participants strive to deliver their best Cakalele performances.

Festival participants, ranging from elementary to junior high school students, enthusiastically showcased the choreographed movements they had diligently learned. With pride, they demonstrated that Cakalele is not just a dance, it is a reflection of their identity as the people of North Maluku.

The support from the Desa Kawasi government also played a key role in the festival’s success. Frans Datang, Secretary of Desa Kawasi, expressed his appreciation for Harita Nickel’s initiative in preserving local traditions. “This festival has a truly positive impact on the preservation of customs and culture in Desa Kawasi. We, from the Desa Kawasi Government, fully support this event as part of our collective effort to protect and promote local wisdom,” he stated.
The festival’s location in the new settlement of Desa Kawasi added a distinct atmosphere to the event. With improved public facilities, including a village office, healthcare center, and clean water access, the quality of life for residents has significantly improved. While some community members continue to reside in the original settlement, the festival successfully brought the entire community together in a shared cultural celebration.

Beyond cultural preservation, this festival reflects Harita Nickel’s commitment to strengthening community relations. Through close collaboration between the company and local residents, traditions such as Cakalele Dance can continue to thrive amid modernization.

Harita Nickel Preserves Tradition in Desa Kawasi Through the Cakalele Dance Festival

As the morning air remains crisp, the kitchen at Debby Sukaran’s residence is already alive with activity. At five in the morning, the clatter of pots and the rhythmic chopping of vegetables fill the dimly lit space. An experienced cook measures rice into a large pot, while two younger assistants expertly chop carrots, green beans, and cabbage. Each movement is precise and efficient, a routine they have mastered over time.
Debby and her team are preparing free lunches for students at Loji Permai Middle School and Tunas Muda High School in Kawasi. Since October 2023, she has been entrusted as a catering vendor for a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative by Harita Nickel aimed at ensuring students receive proper nutrition so they can focus on their studies without worrying about their midday meals.

Every day, Debby’s small kitchen provides meals for 229 students and 25 teaching staff. The nutritious menu includes protein from fish or chicken, fresh vegetables, and fruit.	

“At first, I was unsure if I could handle such a large order every day,” Debby admitted while checking a freshly cooked batch of rice.“But over time, we became accustomed to the routine. Now, there is a great sense of satisfaction in seeing the students enjoy the meals we prepare.”

As the clock approaches eight in the morning, the meals are packaged with care. The rice is molded into uniform portions, side dishes are neatly packed, and each lunch box is checked before being loaded into the delivery vehicle.

At the meal distribution table, neatly stacked boxes await the students. Syifa Nurjannah, one of the students, eagerly unpacks her lunch.

One by one, students collected their meals and returned to their seats. Among them, Syifa Nurjannah quickly unpacked her lunch. “After a long day of studying, it’s great to finally share a meal with friends,” she said with a smile. “There’s something special about eating together. It brings us closer and allows us to connect while enjoying our food.”

Around her, her classmates also began to enjoy their meals. Some engaged in light conversation, while others quietly savored each bite.

In another part of the room, Servin Langkodi, Biology teacher and principal of Loji Permai Middle School, observed his students gathered in groups, enjoying their lunch. “This free lunch program has been invaluable for the students. After a full day of learning, they can eat together without the worry of hunger or having to find food elsewhere. It’s not just about providing food, but about fostering a sense of community among them,” he stated.

From the company’s perspective, Ifan Farianda, Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel, emphasized that this program is a key part of the company’s commitment to supporting the well-being of students in Kawasi.

“We want to ensure that children in Kawasi can study comfortably without worrying about their lunch. Through this program, they leave school with full stomachs and still have the energy to continue their activities at home,” he stated.

“We are committed to implementing social programs that align with the needs of the local community. We also continuously assess these programs to ensure they are operating effectively,” he added.

As the school day came to a close, the grounds began to clear as students finished their meals and began heading home. Some continued to chat while taking their empty boxes to the trash bins. While the school day had ended, for these students, the new routine they most looked forward to was sharing lunch together.

From Kitchen to Classroom: Free Lunch Program for Kawasi Students

At nine in the morning, as the sun rose higher, residents of Kelo Village gathered in front of the village health post (Polindes) on Saturday, January 18, 2025. A blue tent provided much-needed shade, while rows of plastic chairs quickly filled with elderly residents engaging in conversation and younger participants assisting their family members or waiting for their turn. Each individual patiently waited for their name to be called to receive medical services.
On the other side, medical personnel from Harita Nickel, Obi Hospital, and Sum Community Health Center (Puskesmas) prepared their equipment. Medicine boxes were neatly arranged on tables, medical instruments were set up, and occasional conversations among healthcare workers ensured everything ran smoothly. Meanwhile, the registration queue continued to grow as more villagers arrived.

Kelo Village, located in North Obi District, was one of the areas benefiting from the free healthcare services provided by the company through the Dokter Harita Share program. After completing registration, residents underwent initial health screenings. Medical personnel promptly checked blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and listened to individual health concerns. Several elderly patients were seen consulting with doctors, inquiring about their regular medications. Many expressed relief after receiving direct explanations about their health conditions.

“Usually, we can only visit the midwife at the village health post, and sometimes certain medicines are unavailable. Today, we had the chance to consult with doctors and receive more comprehensive examinations and treatment,” said Misna Kaimudin, a local Kelo Village resident who had just completed her check-up.

In addition to medical check-ups, Harita Nickel also donated medicines and medical supplies to the Kelo Village’s health post. Muhammad Jaya Ladam, the Head of East Obi Subdistrict, expressed his appreciation for the program and hopes to see its expansion to more villages. “This is the second time free medical services have been provided in Kelo Village. We hope this program continues and reaches more communities in need,” he said.

Irmawati Suaib, Head of Kelo Village, expressed her gratitude to Harita Nickel for its commitment to community health. “We deeply appreciate Harita Nickel’s care and support for our residents. Many face challenges in accessing and affording healthcare, and this program provides a real solution for them,” she said.

Company doctor Roykedona Lisanoted that the most frequent complaints among residents were upper abdominal pain due to irregular eating habits. “Many patients are too busy working and forget to eat, leading to acid reflux,” she explained.

Hypertension was another prevalent issue identified. “Some patients have been diagnosed with the high blood pressure but are not disciplined in taking their medication. This can be dangerous if left unmanaged,” she added.

The Dokter Harita Share program is part of Harita Nickel’s ongoing commitment to improving healthcare access for local communities. In Kelo Village, this initiative has benefited 59 patients of all ages, from children to the elderly.&nbsp;

As this program continues, Harita Nickel encourages all stakeholders to collaborate to strengthen healthcare initiatives and contribute to a healthier community.

Harita Nickel Provides Free Medical Check-ups in Kelo Village

On Monday morning, January 13, 2025, the front yard of the Kawasi Village Head’s office was filled with dozens of residents. Rows of colorful plastic jerrycans filled the dusty ground. The empty jerry cans were lined up neatly as if reflecting the hopes of their owners, who patiently queued for their turn.&nbsp;
In another corner, several women sat in a group, fanning their faces with their hands while engaging in small conversation to pass the time. Children played happily nearby, undeterred by the long queue ahead. Among the waiting crowd, Solvina Bungajari stood holding tightly to her worn jerrycan.&nbsp; “Today, we are very grateful. Finally, we can get kerosene again,” she said.

Since the Christmas and New Year holidays, Kawasi Village has been experiencing a shortage of kerosene, which led to a significant price spike. As a result, many residents have been forced to cut back on their consumption and explore alternative options, such as using firewood for cooking.

However, switching to firewood is not an ideal solution. It slows the cooking process and requires extra attention as the fire is often unstable. This situation underscores the critical and irreplaceable role that kerosene continues to play as an essential need for most families in Kawasi Village.
In response to the situation, Harita Nickel has provided 8,700 liters of kerosene to the residents of Kawasi Village. Each household received up to 20 liters of kerosene as part of this assistance initiative.&nbsp;

Frans Datang, Secretary of Kawasi Village, expressed his deep appreciation for this support. “We are very grateful to Harita Nickel. This support is invaluable, especially when the community is struggling with the kerosene shortage,” he said.

During the distribution process, John Simbolon, Community Relations Superintendent at Harita Nickel, was seen monitoring the distribution process. “We fully understand how important kerosene is for the community here. This assistance is part of our effort to ease their burden,” John said. He also emphasized that this was not a one-time action. “As part of the community, we feel a strong responsibility to provide support. We remain committed to enhancing the well-being of Kawasi Village, not only through emergency assistance but also through other sustainable programs,” he added.

Her words reflected genuine appreciation, particularly when she added, “Even though we have not yet relocated to the new Kawasi Village, we continue to receive support.”

The kerosene distribution created a positive and supportive atmosphere among the community. Residents engaged in light conversation while awaiting their turn, with occasional laughter as children played nearby.
As the sun rose, the line began to thin. The jerrycans, once empty, were now filled with kerosene and ready to be taken home. One by one, the residents began to leave the village office yard, some smiling while carrying their heavy, filled jerrycans.

Harita Nickel Distributes 8,700 Liters of Free Kerosene to Kawasi Residents

Harita Nickel's Community Development team, in collaboration with Harita Saruma, launched the North Maluku Spice Processing Product (Propala) initiative in late November 2024. This collaboration aims to contribute to sustainable development (SDGs) in Obi Island, North Maluku, by empowering local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Ifan Farianda, Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel, emphasized the importance of employee involvement in the company’s Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM). One of the ways is by promoting the products of company-supported MSMEs, particularly among employees and the general public.
 
“Propala is packaged as a unique souvenir from North Maluku, making it an excellent gift for employees returning home for vacation,” Ifan said, showcasing the Propala packaging with the tagline, “Oleh-Oleh Penuh Cinta, dari Obi untuk Indonesia” (Gifts Full of Love, from Obi for Indonesia).
 
The Propala initiative originated from Harita Nickel’s desire to empower housewives in the new Kawasi Village settlement by processing nutmeg-based products. Previously, only nutmeg seeds were utilized, leaving the fruit’s flesh discarded. Now, the fruit flesh is processed into a variety of food and beverages, adding value to this regional commodity.
Harita Saruma is an internal company program designed to help Harita Nickel employees&mdash;especially younger ones&mdash;gain insight into the company’s operations from upstream to downstream, including its contributions to local communities.
“This Propala launch with Harita Saruma embodies one of our core values: Teamwork. Employees collaborate to support the company’s development and empowerment initiatives,” Ifan explained.
 
The event began with a presentation from Harita Nickel’s Community Development team, which outlined the Propala initiative and the broader PPM program. The session was attended by Propala members and 16 Harita Saruma participants from various departments and business units.
 
Following the presentation, participants visited local nutmeg plantations located 15 minutes from the new settlement. Here, they learned about the harvesting process, guided by Propala members.
 
“If the skin starts to split like this, it means it’s ripe,” explained Lenny Jouronga, a Propala member, while showing a ripe nutmeg fruit. “The flesh will also feel softer, not too hard. If it’s still hard, it’s not ready yet,” she added.

The Propala women taught participants how to select ripe nutmeg fruit while sharing stories about their harvesting experiences. The Harita Saruma participants enthusiastically joined the harvest, paying close attention to the women’s tips.
 
After harvesting, participants visited the Propala production house, where they were welcomed by an array of neatly packaged nutmeg-based products such as candy, dodol (traditional toffee-like sweets), syrup, and nutmeg juice. The participants eagerly sampled these delicacies.
 
“The nutmeg juice is so refreshing, especially with ice on a hot day,” remarked Muhamad Asep Falahudin from Harita Nickel’s Technical Support department. “The taste is unique&mdash;sweet and tangy with a distinct nutmeg flavor. It’s perfect for quenching thirst in the heat!”
 
Eresia Makanaung, a laboratory staff member from PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, expressed her amazement at the dodol. “I grew up in West Halmahera and often harvested nutmeg at my grandmother’s farm, but we only used the seeds. I never knew the flesh could be turned into dodol,” she said.
 
“The taste is delightful&mdash;not overly sweet, with the signature nutmeg aroma. I’m amazed that something often discarded can become such a valuable product,” Eresia added.
 
The Harita Saruma participants left the event feeling inspired. Through Propala, they witnessed how local potential could be transformed into high-quality products, boosting the local economy and creating broader market opportunities.

Harita Nickel and Harita Saruma Launch Propala to Support Local SMEs

Following the success of its first batch, Harita Nickel has once again launched the vocational program, Peningkatan Keahlian dan Keterampilan Pemuda (PELITA), aimed at enhancing the skills of the local workforce around Obi Island. This second batch provides participants with training in operating heavy equipment, specifically overhead crane trucks.
The second batch of PELITA began on April 18, with 30 participants&mdash;double the number of participants in the first batch.

Ifan Farianda, Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel, stated that the increased number of participants reflects the high interest of local workers in improving their skills.

Like the first batch, participants in this batch are being trained to operate heavy machinery. However, the equipment they are learning to operate is different. While the first batch trained on wheel loaders, this batch is focused on operating overhead crane trucks. The training curriculum includes mental and physical development, discipline-building, classroom theory, and practical fieldwork.
Ifan further explained that all participants in the program were previously employed as non-skilled crew members or daily laborers (THL) at the company.

“All participants who graduate from this program will be directly absorbed by the company. This is similar to what was done with the first batch, where 14 participants who completed the training are now working as wheel loader operators in the Production Department,” he said.

One participant in the second batch, Fahrurozi Ausman, expressed enthusiasm for the training, noting that it would not only enhance his skills but also provide career advancement opportunities.

“This training is very beneficial for us. Initially, we were just regular crew members, but with this training, we hope to be promoted to overhead crane operators,” Fahrurozi said.

Upon completing the training, the company will assist participants in obtaining their Operator’s License (SIO) and other necessary documentation, ensuring that they are legally qualified to operate lifting and transport equipment.
