The economic empowerment of local communities has become a key focus for Harita Nickel’s Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM). The company has implemented a variety of initiatives to improve the livelihoods of those in the surrounding areas of its operational sites. Recently, Harita Nickel launched a program to support local women, named PROSA.
PROSA, which stands for Project Rasa, is a café managed by a group of women supported by Harita Nickel. Officially opened in May 2024, the café is located at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (PT HJF) and offers a wide range of culinary options, from snacks to full meals.
Latif Supriadi, Head of External Relations at Harita Nickel, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing opportunities for the local community through economic development activities. With over 30,000 employees and workers at the site, Harita Nickel aims to create business opportunities for the local population.

“The economic activities carried out by the groups we support, including those making chips, operating mini-markets, and running cafés, are expected to enhance the welfare of women’s groups in Kawasi,” said Latif.

With this culinary business initiative, Harita Nickel hopes to improve the skills and capacities of local women, thus contributing to family incomes and fostering positive community impact.

Latif also noted that PROSA, operating within the company’s premises, is expected to bring joy to visitors who enjoy the variety of dishes offered.

“It is crucial that these groups maintain strong teamwork in managing their operations, ensuring that the businesses already launched continue to grow and remain sustainable,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, Suryani Jamardin, Coordinator of Obi Jaya Mandiri, expressed appreciation for the significant support Harita Nickel has provided in developing their businesses. According to Suryani, the company has not only provided business space but also offered training to enhance the group’s capacity and skills.

“Through these opportunities, the women’s groups in Kawasi can become financially empowered and gain valuable knowledge,” said Suryani with enthusiasm.

Prior to the launch of the PROSA Café at PT HJF, Harita Nickel also provided access for its supported women’s groups to open cafés and retail outlets for employees at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend.

The management of cafés and retail kiosks by these remarkable women, empowered by Harita Nickel, has brought numerous benefits. Not only do they gain economically, but they also acquire skills and knowledge that will serve as invaluable assets, supporting the independence of women on Obi Island.

PROSA: Harita Nickel Empowers Local Women Through Culinary Business Development

Harita Nickel has introduced a new initiative&mdash;Produk Unggulan Olahan Rempah Maluku Utara, known as Propala, as part of Harita Nickel’s broader Community Development and Empowerment Program (Pengembangan dan Pemberdayaan Masyarakat or PPM). This program specifically targets local women, particularly mothers, now residing in the new settlement of Kawasi Village.
Harita Nickel has launched Produk Unggulan Olahan Rempah Maluku Utara, known as Propala, a new initiative under its Community Development and Empowerment Program. This program focuses on local women, especially mothers, living in the new settlement of Kawasi Village.
 
Ifan Farianda, Harita Nickel's Community Development Manager, explained that Propala was designed as a platform to empower local women by diversifying the use of nutmeg, a crop deeply rooted in the history of North Maluku. Despite nutmeg being the region’s one the most prized commodity, its full potential has long been overlooked. The nutmeg seed has always been harvested, but the flesh, which makes up the majority of the fruit, has been left untapped.
 
“The flesh of the nutmeg is both sweet and slightly tangy, and can be transformed into an array of products, including nutmeg syrup, jam, and the chewy confection, similar to Turkish Delight, known as dodol,” Ifan remarked. 
 
To unlock this potential, Harita Nickel has enlisted the help of small business entrepreneurs from Ternate, who have been conducting training workshops for the women in Kawasi.

In a recent workshop, 30 women learned how to process nutmeg into drinks and snacks, as well as how to package these products attractively. The sessions not only provided technical skills but also focused on building entrepreneurial confidence and instilling the basics of running a business.
 
“The mothers in Propala are a new group, joining other women-led businesses we've helped before. This is part of our ongoing effort to support the community's economic stability, especially as they adjust to their new homes,” Ifan added.
 
In a further boost to their business prospects, Harita Nickel has helped secure Pangan Industri Rumah Tangga or PIRT certification for five Propala products: nutmeg syrup, fruit concentrate, air guraka (a traditional herbal drink), jam, and dodol. These certifications open doors for wider market access, allowing the women to sell to employees heading home on leave or visitors to the site.
 
Fauzia, a member of the Propala group, expressed her excitement at participating in the program. “I used to think nutmeg was only valuable for its seeds. Now, we’re making syrups, dodol, candies, and even air guraka. Our region is rich in spices, but before the company came, it was hard to find buyers or even get our hands on the ingredients. But now, with the economy improving, selling these processed products is much easier,” she shared, hopeful for the additional income Propala could bring.
 
The new settlement of Kawasi village, supported by the government and facilitated by Harita Nickel, provides residents with better housing. Since moving in, the community has started to grow economically, with people opening grocery stores and vegetable stalls to serve others.
 
In Propala, Harita Nickel has not only invested in the local economy but in the future of Kawasi’s women, offering them the tools and training to build a sustainable livelihood in the heart of North Maluku’s spice-rich landscape.

Empowering Kawasi Mothers: Harita Nickel Launches Propala in New Settlement

Harita Nickel, an integrated and sustainable nickel mining and processing company located on Obi Island, has launched the Harita Gemilang (Bright Young Generation of Obi) scholarship program. This initiative opens valuable opportunities for students from Obi, particularly those hailing from underprivileged backgrounds, to receive financial assistance in completing their higher education. Through this endeavor, Harita Nickel is not just investing in individual futures but also paving the way for a brighter community ahead.
To enhance information accessibility and foster community participation, Harita Nickel has rolled out a Roadshow for the Harita Gemilang Scholarship across 34 villages in five districts of Obi Island. Running from October 9 to 17, 2024, this event serves as a vibrant platform for interaction among various stakeholders, including district and village officials as well as the parents of students. 
 
“For the company, this initiative is not merely about promoting scholarships; it’s about building strong bonds and trust between Harita Nickel and the local community to create a brighter future for the youth of Obi,” explains Ifan Farianda, Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel.Harita Gemilang Scholarship program is part of Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM) in the education sector, which focuses on supporting students from Obi Island. “The goal is not only to achieve academic success, but also to shape future leaders who can drive the nation's progress, particularly on Obi Island,” Ifan said, underscoring the broader vision behind the Harita Gemilang scholarship program.
 
The Harita Gemilang scholarships are divided into two main categories: the Harita Gemilang Prestasi Scholarship for students with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 and above, and the Harita Gemilang Harapan Scholarship for those with GPAs ranging from 3.0 to 3.5. Recipients will receive educational assistance ranging from IDR 5,000,000 to IDR 7,500,000 per semester, depending on the category awarded.
 
The local community, including village and district governments, responded positively to the program. The district head of Obi, Ali La Jarahiya, appreciates the scholarship initiative, noting that it greatly helps families with education costs. “This scholarship provides better support for the community, especially in covering the expenses of higher education,” he says.
 
Ali also emphasizes the importance of the program's sustainability and his readiness to assist in promoting it within the village governments, ensuring that more community members are aware of and can benefit from the opportunity.
 
To guarantee that information is easily accessible and transparent, Harita Nickel has designated its Instagram account as the primary communication channel. Prospective scholarship recipients can find all the essential information regarding requirements, registration, and timelines for the Harita Gemilang Scholarship. Applications have been open since October 4, 2024, and will close on November 10, 2024. Following that, the administrative selection process will take place from November 10 to 30, 2024, with scholarship recipients to be announced between December 10 and 12, 2024.&nbsp;

Shaping Obi Island’s Future: Harita Gemilang Scholarship for Tomorrow’s Leaders

Integrated and sustainable nickel mining and processing company Harita Nickel has launched the ‘Harita Gemilang Scholarship’, a program for Undergraduate- and Diploma-level students native to Obi Island in South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province. With this program, it is hoped that young people on Obi Island will be more motivated to continue their education to college level, thereby supporting the emergence and development of high-quality human resources in the region.
This scholarship is valid for one year (two semesters), with funding distributed per semester. In total, there will be 60 recipients of the Harita Gemilang academic scholarship, with places allocated as follows: 15 spaces on the GEMILANG Prestasi (Bachelor's Degree) scholarship; 20 on the GEMILANG Harapan (Bachelor's Degree) scholarship; and 25 on the GEMILANG Harapan (Diploma) scholarship.
<h2>A. Recipient Requirements
</h2>
Applicants for the Harita GEMILANG scholarship program must fulfill the following requirements:

<ol><li>Must be Indonesian citizens;</li><li>Domiciled in and originating from Obi Island (Obi District, North Obi District, East Obi District, West Obi District, or South Obi District);</li><li>Registered as active students in their respective departments/study programs in the current academic year, as evidenced by registered UKT/SPP payments (minimum accreditation B);</li><li>During the scholarship period, students will not apply for academic leave;</li><li>Will be well-behaved, diligent/studious, active, and demonstrate a strong willingness/motivation to succeed;</li><li>At the time of registration, should be between semester II (minimum) and semester VII (maximum) for Bachelor’s studies, or semester V for Diplomas;</li><li>Willing to comply with all applicable provisions relevant to scholarship recipients and other requirements;</li><li>Not currently subject to academic or non-academic sanctions due to violations of the code of ethics and/or other applicable regulations;</li><li>Not currently registered as a recipient of other assistance;</li><li>Have a GPA (grade point average) as follows: a. Bachelor's Degree - GEMILANG Prestasi :&nbsp;GPA ≥ 3.5 b. Bachelor's Degree - GEMILANG Harapan :&nbsp;GPA 3.0–3.5 c. Diploma - GEMILANG :&nbsp;GPA ≥ 3.0</li></ol>

<h2>B. Administrative Requirements
</h2>
Students who meet the above requirements may submit the following administrative documents in soft copy (e.g., PDFs):

<ol><li>A completed registration form (Google Doc);</li><li>A recent color portrait photo;</li><li>Frontal view photo of house/residence (in focus);</li><li>Photocopy of personal and family ID (KTP & KK);</li><li>Photocopy of valid student card;</li><li>Proof of UKT or SPP payment registered in the current semester;</li><li>Study Result Card (KHS) signed by the Head of Section in each faculty in the current semester;</li><li>Active Lecture Certificate (Active Student) from campus;</li><li>Official written confirmation of no academic sanctions from each faculty;</li><li>A statement letter confirming the applicant will not request leave, change study programs, and/or move to another university while enrolled on the scholarship program;</li><li>A statement letter confirming the applicant is not currently receiving a scholarship from any other source for the duration of the current academic year;</li><li>a. GEMILANG Prestasi: 
- Essay on "Sustainable Village Development" with subthemes covering education, health, the economy, socio-cultural aspects, and infrastructure. The essay should be a minimum of 1,000 words, formatted on A4 paper, using Times New Roman, size 11, with single line spacing.
 
- Motivation letter, introducing the applicant, their family background, reasons for applying, and future aspirations. The letter should be at least 1,000 words, formatted on A4 paper with Times New Roman, size 11, and 1.5 line spacing.
 
- Written plan detailing how the applicant intends to use the funds provided by the Harita Gemilang Scholarship.
 
b. GEMILANG Harapan:
 
- Motivation letter, introducing the applicant, their family background, reasons for applying, and future aspirations. The letter should be at least 1,000 words, formatted on A4 paper with Times New Roman, size 11, and 1.5 line spacing. - Written plan detailing how the applicant intends to use the funds provided by the Harita Gemilang Scholarship.</li><li>Photocopy of certificates regarding non-academic achievements/rankings (if any).</li><li>An active bank account with a minimum balance of IDR 200,000.</li></ol>
<h2>C. Scholarship Regulations
</h2>
If successful in their application for the Harita Gemilang scholarship, recipients are required to adhere to the following regulations:
<ol><li>Scholarships will be provided for 1 (one) year, covering 2 (two) semesters. Payment will be made on a per-semester basis;</li><li>For the duration of the GEMILANG scholarship program, participants are prohibited from: a. Receiving any other scholarship and/or other similar educational assistance; b. Applying for leave (for any reason), changing study programs and/or moving to another university; c. Violating any regulations stipulated by the university where the participant is studying; d. Engaging in any activities that violate the laws of the Republic of Indonesia; e. Displaying antagonistic conduct or actions that could otherwise be deemed detrimental to the government, companies, or universities; f. If the participant is proven to have committed a violation as per points 2a-e, the scholarship will be rescinded and they will be ineligible to receive any scholarships from Harita Nickel in the future.</li><li>During the Gemilang scholarship program, participants are asked to create a community development program that can be implemented either at the study location or in their local neighborhood (during college holidays). All activities are then documented and reported in full.</li></ol>

Harita Nickel Announces the ‘Harita Gemilang’ Scholarship for Obi Island Students: Explore the Requirements Here!

Throughout the <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/media/kabar-obi/csr/ini-dia-capaian-csr-harita-nickel-pada-semester-1-tahun-2024" target="_blank">first semester</a> of 2024, Harita Nickel successfully held a number of <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community" target="_blank">Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)</a> programs in the field of <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community/education-programs" target="_blank">education</a> for communities in South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku.
The following is a summary of Harita Nickel's education-related CSR programs, implemented during semester 1 of 2024.
<h2>a. Expertise and Skills Improvement Program (PELITA)</h2>
PELITA is Harita Nickel's effort to improve the technical, or ‘hard’, skills of community members living in the vicinity of the operational area, specifically related to the operation of heavy equipment. After successfully producing 14 graduates in the previous year, Harita Nickel is now running the second iteration of the PELITA program, which comprises 28 new trainees.
Participants in this program are trained to operate overhead cranes and will then sit the <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/media/kabar-obi/csr/harita-nickel-berikan-pelatihan-dan-sertifikasi-sio-untuk-pemuda-lokal" target="_blank">Operator's License (SIO) certification</a> exam. Participants not only learn how to operate heavy equipment, but also gain legally recognized certification that will allow them to do so in a professional capacity.
<h2>b. Harita Teaches (Harita Mengajar)</h2>
Harita Nickel holds a number of educational activities under the ‘Harita Mengajar’ umbrella, which enables Harita Nickel employees to share their skills and experience with communities around the mining area.
As per June 2024, a total of five Harita Mengajar activities had been held, involving 729 student participants. The details of these activities are as follows:
● Mandarin Class at SMA Tunas Muda and SMP Loji Permai, Kawasi Village

● Commemoration of <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/media/kabar-obi/k3l/edukasi-lingkungan-harita-nickel-ajak-siswa-kawasi-kelola-sampah" target="_blank">World Environment Day</a>

● Occupational Health and Safety (K3) Seminar

● Commemoration of World Children's Book Day

● Introduction to solar panels as an alternative, environmentally friendly energy source
<h2>c. Teacher Incentives</h2>
Several schools on Obi have insufficient teaching staff due to the challenges associated with accessing the island. In response to this issue, Harita Nickel provides monthly incentives for 71 assistant teachers, who teach at schools around the operational area.
<h2>d. Sewing Training</h2>
Working in collaboration with the Ternate City Vocational and Productivity Training Center (BPVP), Harita Nickel has also held a number of training activities related to sewing and textiles for residents living and working in the vicinity of the company's operational area.
During these sessions, participants can develop the skills needed to repair damaged clothes effectively, while also learning to make their own clothing or even set up an independent business providing sewing services.
<h2>e. Provision of Laptops</h2>
Harita Nickel has also provided support to students at the New Settlement Middle and High Schools in Kawasi Village, in the form of laptops, projectors, printers, and other computer laboratory equipment.
<h2>f. Student Literacy (Ceria)
</h2>
Harita Nickel has also rolled out the Smart Literacy and Writing (Ceria) program in six schools surrounding the company's operational area. Through this program, the company has provided around 200 high-quality books to students, thereby supporting the development of an active learning environment that improves literacy and sparks students' interest in reading.
Education plays a pivotal role in community empowerment. By focusing attention on this particular area, the company intends to increase access to education, build positive relationships with communities living around the operational area, and ultimately have a positive impact on community development.

Harita Nickel's CSR Education Program for Semester I of 2024

Throughout the first semester of 2024, Harita Nickel implemented <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community" target="_blank">Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)</a> programs in a number of fields, including education, health, economy, socio-culture, and infrastructure. These programs were designed support sustainable development in the company's operational areas, while also raising living standards in the community.
Below is a list of programs and achievements associated with Harita Nickel's CSR activities, enacted during the first half of 2024:

 
<h2>1. Education Program</h2>
Equitable access to high-quality <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community/education-programs" target="_blank">education</a> is the key to creating talented human resources who can make a positive contribution to society. With that principle in mind, Harita Nickel delivered a number of educational programs for residents in the vicinity of the operational area, including:
a. The Skills and Expertise Improvement Program (PELITA)

b. Harita Mengajar (Harita Teaches)

c. Teacher incentives

d. Sewing training
<h2>2. Health Program</h2>
During the first semester of 2024, the company also implemented a number of <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community/health-programs" target="_blank">health initiatives</a> designed to improve access to medical services, including:
a. Free medical treatment

b. Health facilities and infrastructure

c. Stunting prevention
 
<h2>3. Agricultural Development</h2>
Agriculture is one of the primary sources of livelihoods for residents on Obi Island, South Halmahera. Therefore, Harita Nickel provides a range of support to boost farmers’ productivity and combat poverty, including:
a. Obi Food Security Center (Sentani)

b. Climate-responsive Horticulture & Agribusiness Center (Obi Sehati)

c. Super Hortima Horticulture Farming Business Center

d. Initiation of the progressive livestock model (Impresif)

e. Fishermen Farming Business Center (Sutan)

f. Learning Together in Nature, Kawasi (Salam Kawasi)
In the first half of 2024, this program engaged with 414 farmers spanning 21 farmer groups, and was responsible for generating income totaling IDR 1.29 billion.


<h2>4. MSME Development</h2>
Harita Nickel also helps to develop Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the surrounding community. Several business units resulting from partnerships with residents include:
a. Hop Mart

b. Nyala Cafe

c. Obi Snack

d. RUTE (Rumah Usaha Tangguh Ekonomi)

e. Pro-Mama

f. Prosa
This activity involved 43 women's group members and succeeded in opening six job vacancies for Hop Mart, Nyala Cafe, and Prosa employees. So far, during this year alone, revenue of IDR 1.97 billion has been generated across all business units.

 
<h2>5. Infrastructure Program</h2>
Infrastructure is the primary facilitator of all socio-economic activities in the community. Throughout 2024, Harita Nickel has collaborated with the South Halmahera Regency Government to build <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community/infrastructure-development" target="_blank">infrastructure</a>, including:
a. Construction of a bridge in Soligi

b. Construction and renovation of places of worship in Soligi

d. Renovation of village maternity units (polindes) in Fluk

e. Construction of the Rabat Road connecting Fluk Village and Kelo Village

f. Repairs to the Gambaru pier

g. Provision of electricity and clean water for 297 families in Kawasi Village


<h2>6. Environmental Programs</h2>
Harita Nickel also collaborates with residents to maintain cleanliness and environmental sustainability in villages around the operational area. This includes the following activities:
a. Transportation and processing of waste from residential areas

b. Beach clean-up operations in the Kawasi coastal area

 
<h2>7. Socio-cultural Programs</h2>
Harita Nickel also contributes to the development of socio-cultural activities on Obi Island. Some of these activities include:
a. Arts and culture events

b. Youth activities
<ul><li>Support for Quran recitation (MTQ) activities</li><li>Support for youth organizations</li><li>Support for church youth groups</li></ul>
c. Religious activities: 
<ul><li>Isra Miraj Celebration</li><li>1425 Eid al-Fitr gift packages for the community and orphans</li><li>Ramadan Safari</li><li>Easter celebrations</li><li>Provision of 22 cows for Eid al-Adha celebrations in 18 villages</li></ul>
d. Sports activities

Harita Nickel CSR Achievements in Semester 1 of 2024

Harita Nickel continues to strengthen its commitment to improving the quality of local human resources in its operational areas through training and certification of Operator License (SIO) for 30 participants of the second batch PELITA (Enhancement of Youth Skills and Abilities) program on Friday, July 12, 2024. This initiative not only meets the company’s operational requirements for legal compliance in heavy equipment operation, specifically overhead cranes, but also represents a strategic investment in the long-term professional development of these participants.
As part of this initiative, Harita Nickel collaborates with a certified Occupational Health and Safety Service Company (PJK) recognized by the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker RI). The training spans six days, from July 7 to 12, covering a wide range of topics, including technical briefings, safety regulations for lifting equipment, core subjects on overhead cranes, and concludes with a theoretical exam.
 
Community Development Superintendent at Harita Nickel, Panji Setyadi, stated, “The Operator License (SIO) certification facilitated by the company is part of our ongoing commitment to ensure that all PELITA participants are qualified and officially licensed to operate heavy equipment, in this case, overhead cranes.”
 
Panji further explained that this certification not only meets the company’s operational needs but also adds value to the participants by enhancing their career development.
 
Meanwhile, Jabarudin Hi Hafiz, a PELITA participant from Bokimiake Village, West Kayoa District, South Halmahera Regency, expressed his gratitude to the company for organizing the PELITA training program and facilitating their acquisition of SIO. According to Jabarudin, this program is highly beneficial for local youth who lack skills in operating heavy equipment but aspire to build a career as operators within the company.
 
“The PELITA program has paved the way for us to become operators in the company and provides better opportunities to contribute more in the workplace. As local youth of South Halmahera, we are grateful to the company for the support and opportunities given to develop our skills,” said Jabarudin.
 
The PELITA program itself is one of Harita Nickel’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives focusing on developing skills and abilities among local youth on Obi Island and South Halmahera. The first batch of PELITA, held in 2023, was successful with 14 participants, all of whom are now employed as wheel loader operators in the company. As for the second batch, 30 PELITA participants are receiving classroom and field training to prepare them as skilled and certified overhead crane operators.

Harita Nickel Provides Training and Operator License (SIO) for Local Youths

Harita Nickel reaffirmed its commitment to the community on Obi Island through the recent Safari Ramadan program. This year, the 1445 H Safari Ramadan covered 16 villages from 3 districts, including Obi District, South Obi, and East Obi.
Harita Nickel provided 4.930 parcels of Eid al-Fitr groceries to vulnerable groups such as the underprivileged, widows/widowers, and the elderly. They also supported 480 orphans, expanding their reach compared to previous years.
Last year, Safari Ramadan was conducted in 13 villages from 3 districts on Obi Island. This is a concrete implementation of the company’s commitment to social responsibility, with the aim of creating positive impacts for the local communities around its operational areas.

The beneficiaries, including Buton Village, have given positive feedback on the activity, appreciating the company's attention to the local community. Amir La Siti, the Head of Buton Village, expressed gratitude for the company's assistance, stating that it greatly benefits those in need.
 
"We aspire for the collaboration between the company, the village government, and the community to flourish. This ongoing partnership ensures that the company's presence continues to benefit the welfare of the community," he concluded.
 
Separately, Latif Supriadi, Head of External Affairs of Harita Nickel, explained that Safari Ramadan is a company initiative to build stronger connections with the local community while sharing blessings during the holy month of Ramadan. This program aims to improve the company's relationship and solidarity with the community, a bond they've upheld over time.
 
“This is our ongoing commitment to work with the community, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to contribute to the region and national development,” he emphasized.
 
The Safari Ramadan 2024 distribution ran from March 19 to April 8. Harita Nickel not only provided aid but also invited village representatives to break fast together. In Obi District, distribution was centralized in Baru Village on April 2, 2024, while in South Obi and East Obi Districts, the distribution was conducted earlier.

Sharing Ramadan Blessings, Harita Nickel Distributes 5.410 Parcels  and Provides Aid to Orphans

Harita Nickel, an&nbsp;integrated nickel processing company, is committed to maintaining <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community/health-programs" target="_blank">public health</a>, especially around the operational area of Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. One of them is by supporting the government's target of an AIDS-free Indonesia by 2030.&nbsp;
By collaborating with the local community, the company is optimistic that it can break the chain of deadly virus spread in its operating area on Obi Island.
Panji Setyadi, Harita Nickel's Community Development Superintendent, said that efforts to prevent and eliminate HIV/AIDS cannot be undertaken by one party alone, but require the involvement of various stakeholders. He believes this spirit is in line with the 2023 World AIDS Day theme, "Moving together with the community to end AIDS by 2030."
"That's why we have representatives from the local government, specifically the health department, youth, vulnerable groups, and people living with HIV/AIDS (ODHA) to give testimonies," he said during a socialization event held at the Subdistrict Health Center in the new settlement of Kawasi Village on Friday, December 8, 2023.
Panji continued that the recent AIDS awareness campaign held a few days ago was a manifestation of the company's social responsibility to the surrounding environment. He acknowledged that the industry's presence on Obi Island has attracted migrants from various regions in search of better opportunities.
"We hope that through this educational program, residents and at-risk groups will become more vigilant against the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, so that the cases in Kawasi Village can be reduced to zero," he added.
Husein Al Hadar, Head of the Disease Control and Eradication and Environmental Health Division (P2PL) of the South Halmahera District Health Office, revealed an increase in HIV/AIDS cases in his area over the past three years. He explained that from 2020 to 2022, there were a total of 88 cases. The latest data from June 2023 shows an additional 22 cases.
In response, he added that the local government is actively conducting community awareness campaigns on the dangers of AIDS and preventive measures through various media. In addition, they are proactively conducting surprise inspections and tests at various nightlife venues.
Husein also addressed the vulnerability of the village of Kawasi due to the massive development of the industry. According to him, a once quiet village has now become densely populated, even busier than Labuha, the district capital. This brings both opportunities and threats, including the spread of AIDS.
"We are grateful that the company has organized this activity for the benefit of all. It is not only for at-risk groups, but for the entire community to be more aware of the dangers of HIV/AIDS and what can be done for prevention," he explained, urging that such activities be continued.
The awareness campaign was conducted in two sessions targeting different audiences. The first session involved dozens of high school students to increase their awareness and knowledge of the dangers of HIV. The second session involved 57 nightlife workers, identified as the most vulnerable group for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), especially HIV. Following the awareness session, the at-risk group was tested by the health department team.
During the awareness campaign, the company also invited people living with HIV/AIDS (ODHA) to share their experiences. Zulfandi, an active member of LKS Nyinga Rimoi in Kota Ternate who is living with HIV, compared HIV/AIDS cases to the tip of an iceberg. Behind one positive case, he said, there are 100 people suffering from or potentially at risk of contracting HIV.
Based on his experience, Zulfandi, who was diagnosed HIV-positive in his freshman year of high school, said teenagers are the most vulnerable group to infection. This vulnerability arises because teenagers are in a period of self-discovery and curiosity to try new things.
"You are the only ones who can protect yourself. Parents can only supervise you at home, and teachers can help you at school. On the other hand, parents should not restrict their children too much. Instead, they should give them freedom and a sense of responsibility," he said in front of&nbsp;high school students and community representatives.

Collaborating with the Local Community, Harita Nickel realizes a AIDS-free Obi Island

The presence of the nickel downstream industry on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku has had a positive impact on improving the economy of the local community. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the downstream sector has contributed significantly to the achievement of North Maluku as the province with the highest economic growth in Indonesia in the second quarter of 2023.
Amidst the expansion of the electric vehicle battery downstream industry, initiatives have emerged to preserve traditional arts as an effort to maintain the <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community/social-and-cultural-programs" target="_blank">social and cultural</a>&nbsp;wisdom of local communities. One of them is being done by an integrated nickel downstream company, Harita Nickel, which recently held a cakalele dance festival in Kawasi Village, the village surrounding its operations on Obi Island.
Apolinavis F. Mbata, Community Relation Manager of Harita Nickel, said the cakalele dance festival was part of the company's efforts to play an active role in preserving the traditions of local communities. According to him, this activity is routinely carried out by the company in collaboration with the village government and the local community.&nbsp;
"In addition to the economic sector, the company also pays great attention to the sustainability of traditional arts as a reflection of the wisdom of local communities. We hope that this arts festival can become a platform, especially for the younger generation, to learn and appreciate their ancestral heritage," said Navis.
Harita Nickel's initiative to support the preservation of traditional arts was well received by community leaders on Obi Island. Rev. Edy Karamaha, Chairman of the Tobelo-Galela Family Association of South Halmahera Regency, who is also one of the festival's judges, said the company's support was very meaningful for the sustainability of the traditions of the Tobelo people and other ethnic groups who have lived on Obi Island for generations.
"The company's collaboration with the local community to maintain and preserve this local wisdom needs to be maintained. Hopefully, through activities like this, a harmonious relationship between the community and the company can be well maintained," says Edy.
Meanwhile, from the field observation, the Cakalele dance festival was very lively. Hundreds of villagers of various ages crowded into the yard of the village office. They were willing to jostle each other to watch the participants show their dancing skills.

A total of 18 participants, consisting of individual, group, children and adult categories, performed alternately. Accompanied by the sound of gong and tifa in a fast rhythm, they danced energetically with machetes, spears and salawaku. According to historical records, Cakalele is a war dance of the Maluku people to repel invaders.
Unlike the previous year, this festival was held in the new settlement of Kawasi Village. This new settlement is a local government program facilitated by Harita Nickel to provide decent housing for local residents. It has been equipped with public facilities such as village government offices, health centers, school buildings, places of worship, and access to clean water and 24-hour electricity.
So far, some residents have started their activities in the new settlement. Of the 259 housing units that are ready for occupancy, at least 50 houses have been occupied by residents. In addition, the village government has begun to set up offices there. Since last September, the learning activities of junior and senior high school students have also been moved to the new settlement.
Although some residents still live in the old settlement, they all seem to live in harmony with each other, enlivening the annual company and community agenda, which this year was held in the new settlement.
Reinhard Siar, Chairman of the Village Council (BPD) of Kawasi Village, confirmed that some residents have moved to the new settlement. He hopes that those who remain in the old settlement will be able to move into the houses that have been made available to them.&nbsp;
"Hopefully, other residents can follow soon because the facilities in the new settlement are more complete and ready for occupancy," he explained.
