The 2024 National <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/occupational-health-safety" target="_blank">Occupational Health and Safety (K3)</a> Month was celebrated nationwide from January 12 to February 12. This year's theme, "Fostering an OHS Culture: Healthy, Safe Work Practices for Business Continuity," highlights the need to integrate OHS principles into workplace culture. The goal is to reduce workplace accidents and occupational illnesses, ultimately improving productivity.
At Harita Nickel, OHS Month is celebrated annually, with each business unit organizing different activities. The events begin and end with a formal ceremony, and each unit hosts various initiatives to boost participation and engagement.
Activities include sports competitions, OHS evaluations across departments, and a videography contest focused on OHS themes, all designed to emphasize the importance of occupational health and safety in the workplace.

Muksin Muhdin, OHS Trainer Supervisor at <a href="http://tbpnickel.com" target="_blank">PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP)</a>&nbsp;and the chairman of OHS Month committee, explained that this year the company organized a variety of activities focused on occupational health and safety.

To promote workplace health, various sports competitions were held, including badminton, sepak takraw, basketball, volleyball, and running. Meanwhile, to enhance employees knowledge and awareness of workplace safety, the company hosted a First Aid Challenge, departmental Safety Accountability Program (SAP) evaluations, and a Best Performance <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/media/kabar-obi/highlight/sah-tiga-anak-usaha-harita-nickel-raih-sertifikasi-iso-14001-2015-dan-iso-45001-2018" target="_blank">ISO 45001</a> competition on Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.

While other business units organized on-site activities, this year <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/about-us/subsidiaries/smelter" target="_blank">PT Surya Megah Pertiwi (MSP)</a> focused on online competitions, utilizing digital platforms. These included a safety-themed drawing competition for employees children and a “Caring for Colleagues” video competition for employees.

Fajar Aprianto, Safety Operational Supervisor at PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), explained that the drawing competition involving employees children conveyed the message that workplace safety is not only important for the employees but also holds significant meaning for the families waiting at home.

The “Caring for Colleagues” video competition reminded employees to be more aware of their surroundings. When noticing any potential hazards caused by a colleague, Harita employees are encouraged to speak up as a gesture of care and responsibility.

Like other business units, <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/about-us/subsidiaries/smelter" target="_blank">PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF)</a> organized activities to raise employee awareness of occupational health and safety. This effort aligns with the company's goal of achieving Zero Loss Time Injury (LTI) in its operations. LTI refers to work-related accidents that cause permanent disability or result in lost workdays. To achieve the Zero LTI target, support from all levels of the organization is essential.

HJF’s OHS Month activities not only focused on employees but also engaged the local community. These activities included free health check-ups and medical treatments, beach cleanups, and OHS education sessions for high school students at SMA Tunas Muda in Kawasi Village.

The involvement of the community and attention to environmental care reflects the company’s commitment to the principles of <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/about-sustainability" target="_blank">Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)</a>, aiming to create a positive impact on the surrounding environment and society.

<a href="https://tbpnickel.com/about-us/subsidiaries/refinery" target="_blank">PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL)</a> also supported K3 awareness by organizing engaging and enjoyable activities.&nbsp;Events like the "Run for Fun and Color Run" encouraged employees to join in running and Zumba sessions together. More than 200 employees participated in the activities held at the Living Quarter area. Bambang A.&nbsp;Kader, Safety Trainer at HPL and chairman of the OHS Month committee, noted that making the event enjoyable helped employees better understand OHS education without feeling overwhelmed.

He hopes that a strong OHS culture will enhance company performance and productivity. “The goal is to foster a sense of care and responsibility among employees. With stronger connections, they will feel more comfortable reminding each other about safety when they notice any unsafe conditions,” he explained.

OHS Month: Nurturing Relationships for a Safer Workplace

Safety is everyone's responsibility at Harita Nickel. Every employee must ensure their own safety and look out for their coworkers. This commitment is guided by the Safety Pledge and the Four Steps to Safe Work, which align with the company’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policy.
However, safety in the workplace is often seen as the sole responsibility of the Safety Department. Employees often follow protocols, like wearing their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), only when they sense watchful eyes. The presence of the OHS team can sometimes feel intimidating, creating a culture where compliance is driven by oversight rather than genuine concern for well-being.
Younsel Evand Roos, PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP) Director of Operations, emphasized that workplace safety is the priority in company’s operations. The slogan “Safety First,” which underscores the importance of OHS, signifies that safety must be the primary consideration before any work begins.&nbsp; It emphasizes a collective responsibility, extending beyond the individual to safeguard the well-being of everyone in the immediate environment, fostering a culture where protection is built into the foundation of daily operations.
“If someone reminds us to wear PPE or follow standard operating procedures (SOP), it means they are doing their job. Employees with a safety mindset will think about whether they're working safely and take immediate action to correct any unsafe behavior or conditions to protect themselves and others,” he stated during the closing ceremony of National OHS Month 2024.
Understanding the importance of occupational health and safety, the government and corporate stakeholders celebrate OHS Month each year. This tradition goes beyond a simple ritual; it aims to build a culture of safety in the workplace, ensuring that health and safety are top priorities for everyone.
“Safety must never be compromised. If production falls behind, we can catch up. However, a single lapse in safety can have dire consequences. This is the essence of ‘Safety First,’” he stated, emphasizing that the comprehensive implementation of all aspects of occupational health and safety will contribute to the company's productivity, ultimately benefiting employees and ensuring that both priorities progress in harmony.
Ngainur Rofiek, Head of Occupational Health, Safety & Training (OHST) for Harita Nickel’s mining operation, discussed the company’s efforts to integrate OHS into its workplace culture. He explained that the company has set policies reflected in various regulations and that these regulations are incorporated into the Safety Accountability Program (SAP) to ensure they are effectively implemented on the ground.
Rofiek elaborated that the SAP outlines how the OHS monitoring system operates, including when when inspections are conducted, who is responsible, the extent of their responsibilities, and how this information is communicated. To ensure comprehensive coverage, monitoring is conducted in a tiered system&mdash;starting from the foreman level, to supervisors, and upwards&mdash;where each level carries defined duties and responsibilities.
“These regulations are designed to instill a culture of safety. Initially, compliance is driven by rules and the potential for sanctions, but over time, these practices become ingrained and evolve into a workplace safety culture,” he explained.
 
To ensure comprehensive understanding and foster awareness, the company gradually provides training on the importance of occupational health and safety (OHS) alongside established regulations. At Harita Nickel, since 2023, Leadership Training has been implemented progressively, involving all employees from managers to staff across all departments.
 
According to Rofiek, training is a key part of accelerating the development of an OHS culture. The application of OHS principles is demonstrated through the leadership of each individual, with every employee being a leader for themselves and their surroundings.
 
“Our current task is to enhance our maturity level in safety implementation. There are five stages of safety maturity, and we are currently at the reactive stage. This is what we aim to improve,” he explained.
 
For context, the five stages of safety maturity include: vulnerable (basic), reactive, compliant, proactive, and resilient. At the first stage, safety exists only on paper, with minimal implementation. In the second stage, OHS becomes a priority only after incidents occur. The third stage focuses on compliance with regulations. In the proactive stage, efforts go beyond compliance, embedding safety into the company culture from top management to the workforce. At the resilient stage, safety becomes fully integrated, with ongoing innovations to enhance OHS practices.
 
Rofiek is confident that the maturity level of employees in applying OHS principles will continue to improve, largely due to strong support from management. He emphasized that OHS success is not solely dependent on regulations, sanctions, or training programs that expedite the development of a safety culture, but critically on the strong commitment from leadership.
 
“SOPs, regulations, sanctions, and training are key drivers in accelerating the development of a safety culture. However, the most significant factor is management's commitment. Thankfully, our top leadership is fully supportive,” he concluded.

OHS Culture at Obi Site: Safety Starts with Me

Throughout the <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/media/kabar-obi/csr/ini-dia-capaian-csr-harita-nickel-pada-semester-1-tahun-2024" target="_blank">first semester</a> of 2024, Harita Nickel successfully held a number of <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community" target="_blank">Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)</a> programs in the field of <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community/education-programs" target="_blank">education</a> for communities in South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku.
The following is a summary of Harita Nickel's education-related CSR programs, implemented during semester 1 of 2024.
<h2>a. Expertise and Skills Improvement Program (PELITA)</h2>
PELITA is Harita Nickel's effort to improve the technical, or ‘hard’, skills of community members living in the vicinity of the operational area, specifically related to the operation of heavy equipment. After successfully producing 14 graduates in the previous year, Harita Nickel is now running the second iteration of the PELITA program, which comprises 28 new trainees.
Participants in this program are trained to operate overhead cranes and will then sit the <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/media/kabar-obi/csr/harita-nickel-berikan-pelatihan-dan-sertifikasi-sio-untuk-pemuda-lokal" target="_blank">Operator's License (SIO) certification</a> exam. Participants not only learn how to operate heavy equipment, but also gain legally recognized certification that will allow them to do so in a professional capacity.
<h2>b. Harita Teaches (Harita Mengajar)</h2>
Harita Nickel holds a number of educational activities under the ‘Harita Mengajar’ umbrella, which enables Harita Nickel employees to share their skills and experience with communities around the mining area.
As per June 2024, a total of five Harita Mengajar activities had been held, involving 729 student participants. The details of these activities are as follows:
● Mandarin Class at SMA Tunas Muda and SMP Loji Permai, Kawasi Village

● Commemoration of <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/media/kabar-obi/k3l/edukasi-lingkungan-harita-nickel-ajak-siswa-kawasi-kelola-sampah" target="_blank">World Environment Day</a>

● Occupational Health and Safety (K3) Seminar

● Commemoration of World Children's Book Day

● Introduction to solar panels as an alternative, environmentally friendly energy source
<h2>c. Teacher Incentives</h2>
Several schools on Obi have insufficient teaching staff due to the challenges associated with accessing the island. In response to this issue, Harita Nickel provides monthly incentives for 71 assistant teachers, who teach at schools around the operational area.
<h2>d. Sewing Training</h2>
Working in collaboration with the Ternate City Vocational and Productivity Training Center (BPVP), Harita Nickel has also held a number of training activities related to sewing and textiles for residents living and working in the vicinity of the company's operational area.
During these sessions, participants can develop the skills needed to repair damaged clothes effectively, while also learning to make their own clothing or even set up an independent business providing sewing services.
<h2>e. Provision of Laptops</h2>
Harita Nickel has also provided support to students at the New Settlement Middle and High Schools in Kawasi Village, in the form of laptops, projectors, printers, and other computer laboratory equipment.
<h2>f. Student Literacy (Ceria)
</h2>
Harita Nickel has also rolled out the Smart Literacy and Writing (Ceria) program in six schools surrounding the company's operational area. Through this program, the company has provided around 200 high-quality books to students, thereby supporting the development of an active learning environment that improves literacy and sparks students' interest in reading.
Education plays a pivotal role in community empowerment. By focusing attention on this particular area, the company intends to increase access to education, build positive relationships with communities living around the operational area, and ultimately have a positive impact on community development.

Harita Nickel's CSR Education Program for Semester I of 2024

Throughout the first semester of 2024, Harita Nickel implemented <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community" target="_blank">Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)</a> programs in a number of fields, including education, health, economy, socio-culture, and infrastructure. These programs were designed support sustainable development in the company's operational areas, while also raising living standards in the community.
Below is a list of programs and achievements associated with Harita Nickel's CSR activities, enacted during the first half of 2024:

<h2>3. Agricultural Development</h2>
Agriculture is one of the primary sources of livelihoods for residents on Obi Island, South Halmahera. Therefore, Harita Nickel provides a range of support to boost farmers’ productivity and combat poverty, including:
a. Obi Food Security Center (Sentani)

b. Climate-responsive Horticulture & Agribusiness Center (Obi Sehati)

c. Super Hortima Horticulture Farming Business Center

d. Initiation of the progressive livestock model (Impresif)

e. Fishermen Farming Business Center (Sutan)

f. Learning Together in Nature, Kawasi (Salam Kawasi)
In the first half of 2024, this program engaged with 414 farmers spanning 21 farmer groups, and was responsible for generating income totaling IDR 1.29 billion.


<h2>4. MSME Development</h2>
Harita Nickel also helps to develop Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the surrounding community. Several business units resulting from partnerships with residents include:

b. Nyala Cafe

c. Obi Snack

d. RUTE (Rumah Usaha Tangguh Ekonomi)

e. Pro-Mama

f. Prosa
This activity involved 43 women's group members and succeeded in opening six job vacancies for Hop Mart, Nyala Cafe, and Prosa employees. So far, during this year alone, revenue of IDR 1.97 billion has been generated across all business units.

 
<h2>5. Infrastructure Program</h2>
Infrastructure is the primary facilitator of all socio-economic activities in the community. Throughout 2024, Harita Nickel has collaborated with the South Halmahera Regency Government to build <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community/infrastructure-development" target="_blank">infrastructure</a>, including:
a. Construction of a bridge in Soligi

b. Construction and renovation of places of worship in Soligi

d. Renovation of village maternity units (polindes) in Fluk

e. Construction of the Rabat Road connecting Fluk Village and Kelo Village

f. Repairs to the Gambaru pier

g. Provision of electricity and clean water for 297 families in Kawasi Village


<h2>6. Environmental Programs</h2>
Harita Nickel also collaborates with residents to maintain cleanliness and environmental sustainability in villages around the operational area. This includes the following activities:
a. Transportation and processing of waste from residential areas

b. Beach clean-up operations in the Kawasi coastal area

The presence of Harita Nickel opens up opportunities for communities around the operational area, enabling them to grow together. Harita Nickel CSR Achievements in Semester 1 of 2024

In celebration of the 2024 Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Month, Harita Nickel’s business units at the Obi site are hosting a series of events spanning from January 12 to February 12, 2024. These activities are designed to raise awareness and strengthen the company’s commitment to workplace health and safety. 
The OHS Month commenced with an opening ceremony on Friday, January 12, 2024, led by each business unit. During the ceremony, the Indonesian Minister of Manpower’s message was conveyed, emphasizing this year’s theme: "Foster an OHS Culture, Stay Healthy and Safe at Work, and Ensure Business Continuity." Additionally, employees reaffirmed their commitment by reciting the Safety Pledge and revisiting the company’s core values, underscoring the critical role of safety in Harita Nickel's operations.
Following the opening ceremony, various business units are organizing a range of activities, including sports competitions, workplace safety initiatives, and community engagement efforts. PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP) is hosting a football tournament, while PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) is arranging sepak takraw, table tennis, badminton, and futsal competitions.&nbsp;
In terms of non-sporting events, each business unit has created unique opportunities to promote safety and community involvement. PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP) is holding a drawing contest for employees’ children themed around safety, while TBP is conducting a quiz competition and safety rescue demonstrations. HPL is promoting a 5S competition to encourage cleanliness and order in the workplace, and PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) is organizing a beach clean-up near Kawasi Village.
This year's OHS Month theme serves as a reminder for all Harita employees to integrate health and safety as a fundamental part of the work culture. This approach is vital for protecting employees’ well-being and ensuring the company’s operational continuity.
By fostering a strong culture of health and safety and actively participating in these OHS Month events, Harita Nickel reaffirms its commitment to creating a safe, sustainable, and productive work environment.

​Harita Nickel Commemorates OHS Month with Sports and Workplace Safety Initiatives

On Sunday, January 21, 2024, despite overcast weather, nearly 200 employees from PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, a business unit of Harita Nickel, participated in the Run for Fun and Color Run event at the Living Quarter area. This initiative was designed to strengthen solidarity and promote a collective commitment to enhancing health and safety within the workplace.
“This event aims to foster a sense of belonging and mutual care among employees. We hope that in the future, if unsafe conditions arise in the workplace, colleagues who have established strong bonds will feel empowered to remind one another,” stated Bambang A. Kader, Safety Trainer and Chairman of the Committee.
Bambang emphasized that creating an engaging environment is essential for making education about safety culture both accessible and enjoyable, rather than intimidating. He believes that a robust safety culture will not only improve employee well-being but also enhance the overall productivity of the company.
In addition to running, employees participated in Zumba sessions, which were well-received by attendees. “The event was lively, especially with a Zumba instructor leading the activities. The light rain merely added to the excitement as we engaged in energetic movements together,” remarked Courtney Juditha Rumampuk, known as Sisi.
On the same day, employees from PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel, another business unit of Harita Nickel, participated in a Healthy Walking event and a Beach Clean-up at Kawasi Beach. During the clean-up, the team successfully collected over 50 garbage bags, amounting to nearly 2 tons of waste.
Hendri Saputro, Occupational Health and Safety representative at Harita Nickel, emphasized that the recent Healthy Walking and Beach Clean-up event reinforces the company’s commitment to promoting a culture of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) beyond its operational areas.
“This initiative demonstrates that we can engage in physical activity while also preserving the environment. This is the message we want to share with the community. We believe that a healthy environment fosters a healthy society,” Hendri stated.
He further noted that raising awareness about environmental cleanliness, particularly along coastal areas, could drive economic growth through tourism, which remains an untapped potential for Obi Island. “For fishing enthusiasts, this island could become a prime destination for anglers, with opportunities to catch Grouper and even Giant Trevally,” he added.
This year’s National OHS Month serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining sustainable business practices alongside the welfare of communities living near industrial areas. With a focus on mitigating workplace accident risks, all employees at Harita Nickel are working together to cultivate a strong OHS culture that benefits both the organization and the surrounding community.

Inside Looking Out, Outside Looking In: Two Strategies by Harita Nickel to Enhance Health and Safety in the Workplace

This observance goes beyond a formal ceremony, reflecting the company's strong commitment to enhancing awareness and embedding OHS principles into everyday operations.
A key focus for improving OHS standards is the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In this context, PPE is not merely a regulatory requirement but a critical part of the company’s strategy to ensure the safety and well-being of employees across all job functions. 
The importance of PPE lies in its preventive role, designed to reduce the risk of workplace accidents. It provides essential protection against potential hazards, ranging from helmets, gloves, and safety shoes to safety glasses and other specialized gear tailored to specific tasks.

PPE: More Than Just an Accessory, It's a Necessity

In celebration of Indonesia's 79th Independence Day,&nbsp;<a href="http://tbpnickel.com" target="_blank">Harita Nickel</a>, through its business unit <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/about-us/subsidiaries/refinery" target="_blank">PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL)</a>, organized a Fun Walk on Sunday, August 4, 2024. The event, held at the PT HPL Living Quarter, was open to all employees and is part of the company’s annual initiative to mark Independence Day while strengthening team cohesion and fostering a sense of national pride among staff. 
The Fun Walk, which commenced at 6:00 AM local time, saw enthusiastic participation from hundreds of PT HPL employees across various departments. The route covered the Living Quarter area, offering scenic views of Obi Island’s natural landscape.
In addition to the Fun Walk, the company hosted a series of activities to further energize the Sunday morning event. These included a health exercise session and traditional games such as a cracker-eating contest and marble races. The festivities were lively and competitive, with the crowd cheering for their colleagues. 
"The event was a lot of fun! Even though this isn’t my first time participating in such company activities, it always feels enjoyable," said Agretia Griani Tiara, one of the enthusiastic Fun Walk participants.

Earlier, on Sunday, July 21, 2024, another Harita Nickel business unit, <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/about-us/subsidiaries/smelter" target="_blank">PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP)</a>, hosted a similar event, attended by hundreds of PT MSP employees, underscoring the company’s commitment to fostering team spirit and celebrating the essence of independence.

In addition, various traditional and unique competitions, such as Dump Truck (DT) pulling contests, kite festivals, and poco-poco dances, were held across Harita Nickel's business units operating on Obi Island.

<h2>Mining and Processing at Harita Nickel

Nickel is a raw material with many strategic applications, both now and in the future. At Harita Nickel, we not only mine nickel but also process nickel ore into derivative products.

Harita Nickel has a Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/about-us/subsidiaries/smelter" target="_blank">smelter</a> facility that is capable of processing high-grade nickel ore (saprolite) into ferronickel, which can later be processed into stainless steel.

In addition, Harita Nickel also has a <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/about-us/subsidiaries/refinery" target="_blank">High-Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL)</a> facility to process low-grade nickel ore (limonite) into Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), nickel sulfate, and cobalt sulfate. These three products are the raw materials used to make cathodes in the batteries of electric vehicles.

The Various Uses and Benefits of Nickel in Daily Life

Family plays an important role in reducing the rate of workplace accidents. In line with this fact, PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk or Harita Nickel, invites employees' families to be actively involved in managing the risk of fatigue for their family member who works in the company.
Recently, the Occupational Health, Safety, and Training (OHST) Department, in collaboration with the External Relations Department, provided education and counseling to the wives and families of local employees about the risks of fatigue that can lead to work accidents.
Risda Putri Ayudya, Management System Engineer at the OHST Department, said the event involving employees' families is part of the Off The Job Safety program. She continued that this activity is also part of the company's commitment to implementing occupational health and safety (OHS) policies in its operational areas.
“The role of the family is very important in controlling occupational accidents. In this event, we invite local employees' family who live around the company to participate in fatigue management. This is primarily related to the need for workers to rest at home both physically and mentally,” Risda explained.

The 32 attendees were enthusiastic throughout the event. They learned about fatigue management, including what causes fatigue, its effects on physical and mental health, and how families can help manage it. They also received basic life support training for handling emergencies. 
Interestingly, before the workshop, participants were given a guided tour by the company’s safety team to see where their family works.
"This session made me realize how risky my husband's job is, and it almost brought me to tears. Now, we as wives can be more attentive to their rest needs at home," said Jean Gaot, one of the participants.
 
&nbsp;Jean, whose husband works in the smelter area of PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, shared her happiness in gaining basic knowledge about handling emergencies like fires, floods, and other unexpected disasters.
