Harita Nickel continues to strengthen its commitment to improving the quality of local human resources in its operational areas through training and certification of Operator License (SIO) for 30 participants of the second batch PELITA (Enhancement of Youth Skills and Abilities) program on Friday, July 12, 2024. This initiative not only meets the company’s operational requirements for legal compliance in heavy equipment operation, specifically overhead cranes, but also represents a strategic investment in the long-term professional development of these participants.
As part of this initiative, Harita Nickel collaborates with a certified Occupational Health and Safety Service Company (PJK) recognized by the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker RI). The training spans six days, from July 7 to 12, covering a wide range of topics, including technical briefings, safety regulations for lifting equipment, core subjects on overhead cranes, and concludes with a theoretical exam.
 
Community Development Superintendent at Harita Nickel, Panji Setyadi, stated, “The Operator License (SIO) certification facilitated by the company is part of our ongoing commitment to ensure that all PELITA participants are qualified and officially licensed to operate heavy equipment, in this case, overhead cranes.”
 
Panji further explained that this certification not only meets the company’s operational needs but also adds value to the participants by enhancing their career development.
 
Meanwhile, Jabarudin Hi Hafiz, a PELITA participant from Bokimiake Village, West Kayoa District, South Halmahera Regency, expressed his gratitude to the company for organizing the PELITA training program and facilitating their acquisition of SIO. According to Jabarudin, this program is highly beneficial for local youth who lack skills in operating heavy equipment but aspire to build a career as operators within the company.
 
“The PELITA program has paved the way for us to become operators in the company and provides better opportunities to contribute more in the workplace. As local youth of South Halmahera, we are grateful to the company for the support and opportunities given to develop our skills,” said Jabarudin.
 
The PELITA program itself is one of Harita Nickel’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives focusing on developing skills and abilities among local youth on Obi Island and South Halmahera. The first batch of PELITA, held in 2023, was successful with 14 participants, all of whom are now employed as wheel loader operators in the company. As for the second batch, 30 PELITA participants are receiving classroom and field training to prepare them as skilled and certified overhead crane operators.

Harita Nickel Provides Training and Operator License (SIO) for Local Youths

Harita Nickel has officially received ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certifications through its business unit, PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF). This achievement highlights the company's commitment to implementing best practices in the HARITA Nickel Integrated Management System (IMS), particularly in the Environmental Management System (EMS) and Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS).
This achievement indicates that the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Integrated Management System (IMS) implemented across all HARITA Nickel business units has met the International Standards ISO14001:2015 and ISO45001:2018. This accomplishment by HJF also completes the four ISO certificates previously held by HARITA Nickel, each for PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) and PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) end of last year.

Tonny Gultom, Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at HARITA Nickel, stated that this achievement is concrete evidence of the company's commitment to adopting the best international standards in systematically managing environmental responsibilities and implementing OHSMS in sustainable operational activities.

“HARITA Nickel is always committed to running operations that are not only efficient and productive but also responsible towards the environment and employee safety. This certification is the result of the dedication and hard work of the HARITA personnel who have ensured that all processes, procedures, and implementations of Environmental and OHS management practices meet international standards,” he said.

He added that HARITA Nickel will continue to innovate and improve its management practices to achieve sustainable operational excellence. “We are committed to continuously developing the integration of the environment into business processes with a recycling perspective. Likewise, with the planned, measured, and integrated enhancement of OHS protection effectiveness,” Tonny explained.

The certification process undertaken by HARITA Nickel involved a series of rigorous audits and in-depth evaluations of the management systems implemented. In this process, the company had to demonstrate compliance with the various requirements set by the ISO standards. The company's internal team worked in collaboration with world-class external auditors, SGS Indonesia, to ensure that all operational processes and procedures met or even exceeded the established standards.

Meanwhile, Herman Salam, Deputy Head of Electrical and Instrumental at PT HJF, described the preparations made by the company, “The process of meeting these international standards involved close coordination between the internal team and external auditors, as well as a thorough evaluation of every operational aspect. We have prepared well to face the challenges of implementing and maintaining this comprehensive management system. Moving forward, we are also committed to continuously improving efficiency, safety, and health in the workplace, and innovating in the application of technology and best practices that support the company's sustainable goals.”

ISO 14001:2015 is an international standard focusing on the Environmental Management System (EMS) that helps companies improve their environmental performance through a flexible and phased approach. Meanwhile, ISO 45001:2018 is an international standard for the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) that helps improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks, and create healthier and safer working conditions. Both of these standards will be evaluated annually to ensure the quality of their implementation is maintained and improved each year in line with sustainability principles.

Three Subsidiaries of Harita Nickel Achieves ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 Certifications Through PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF)

HARITA Nickel Magazine, one of the internal communications platforms for Insan HARITA, received the Gold Winner award in the category of Indonesia Inhouse Magazine Awards (InMA) 2024 for The Best Corporate Magazine from Serikat Perusahaan Pers (SPS) (Indonesian Press Company Union) at the SPS Awards 2024. This prestigious competition, themed “Pers Sehat, Demokrasi Kuat” (“Thriving Press, Strong Democracy”) consistently serves as a form of appreciation for outstanding journalistic works from media, campus press, and corporations/institutions throughout Indonesia.
The judging panel, consisting of seven experts and practitioners, evaluated the graphic design, branding, photography, and journalistic elements of each entry. Among the judges were Jojo S Nugroho (Advisory Board of the Indonesian PR Company Association), Asmono Wikan (Secretary General of Serikat Perusahaan Pers (SPS) Central), Agus Susanto (Photojournalist for Kompas Daily), and Yadi Hendriana (Chairman of the Press Ethics Complaint Commission at the Press Council).
The number of entries this year increased compared to previous years. No fewer than 719 entries competed in the SPS Awards 2024, comprising 299 entries in the Indonesia Print Media Awards (IPMA) category, 205 entries in the Indonesia Inhouse Magazine Awards (InMA) category, 12 entries in the Indonesia Young Readers Awards (IYRA) category, 85 entries in the Indonesia Students Media Awards (ISMA) category, and 118 entries in the Indonesia Digital Media Awards (IDMA) category.
Secretary General of SPS, Asmono Wikan, expressed his appreciation for all the entries in the SPS Awards 2024. He stated, “I highly appreciate all the entries in the SPS Awards 2024. There is a challenge of creativity in every competing work that must be overcome through strengthening the journalistic and visual competencies of the media personnel.”

Corporate Affairs Manager of HARITA Nickel, Anie Rahmi, expressed her gratitude for the award given by SPS. “It is an honor for us to receive this award. Thank you to SPS Indonesia for supporting the growth of HARITA Magazine year after year and for giving us our third award, as well as our first Gold Winner. It is indeed an encouragement to continue to grow and become even better,” Anie stated.
Serikat Perusahaan Pers (SPS) is the oldest press company organization, established 78 years ago, with most of its members being print media companies. To motivate and appreciate the coordinators of print media from media outlets, campus press, and corporations/institutions, the SPS Awards have been held for the 15th time. This year’s awarding ceremony was attended by leaders of press companies, public relations leaders of government institutions and corporations, and student press coordinators from across Indonesia.

HARITA Nickel Magazine Wins Gold at SPS Awards 2024

Harita Nickel, a nickel mining and processing company on Obi Island, showed its care to the community by hosting a blood donation drive. Activities carried out in honor of World Blood Donor Day were held in two locations, namely the Obi Site on Saturday, June 29 and the Jakarta head office will be on Monday, July 29, 2024.
Employees from all Harita Nickel business units and contractors actively participated in the blood donation. From the Obi Site,&nbsp; around 150 employees and contractors took part in the humanitarian action carried out at the PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) clinic.
 

 Roykedona Lisa Trixie, Head of the Blood Donation Committee and Site Doctor at Harita Nickel expressed her appreciation for the employees' enthusiastic participation. "We are very pleased with the high level of enthusiasm and participation from our employees in this blood donation event. This not only reflects the company's contribution to the surrounding community but also demonstrates the humanitarian values we uphold at Harita Nickel," she said.
This blood donation drive supports Harita Nickel’s commitment to public health. The blood collected from this drive in the Obi Site will be given to Labuha Regional General Hospital (Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah or RSUD) to help meet the hospital's blood supply needs.
“We hope to contribute to public health and help meet RSUD Labuha’s blood supply needs. Each donation today is a beacon of hope for those in need,” Roykedona added.
The organizing committee strictly followed health and safety procedures. Participants had health screenings to verify their eligibility, and the medical team ensured the blood collection was sterile and safe.
Nurul Afiah, Head of the Blood Transfusion Unit at RSUD Labuha, thanked the Harita Nickel employees who donated blood. "The employees' participation shows their strong awareness and social concern. We hope events like this can be held regularly," she said.
Furthermore, Nurul explained several benefits of blood donation for donors. “For donors, regular blood donation can help maintain heart health and renew blood cells in the body. It also provides emotional satisfaction by helping and benefiting others,” she explained.
Fajar Aprianto from the HSE department of PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP) expressed satisfaction with the event. "As a Harita Nickel employee, I'm glad to join this blood donation drive. It helps others and promotes personal well-being," he said. Fajar, who has donated blood four times while working at Harita Nickel, expressed his willingness to join similar activities if the company holds them again in the future.
 
Harita Nickel regularly hosts social and humanitarian activities as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Besides blood drives, the company engages in community empowerment programs in education, health, economy, infrastructure, and socio-cultural sectors. Caring For Community, Harita Nickel Hosts Blood Donation Drive   

The usually bustling atmosphere of the Harita Nickel site on Obi Island became quiet and solemn that early morning. The only sound echoed is the sound of takbir from the loudspeakers of mosques scattered across the employee housing complexes. A number of employees, donning koko shirts, sarongs, and caps, flocked to the mosque to perform Eid al-Adha prayers. 
That morning, Monday, June 17, 2024, all Muslims celebrated Eid al-Adha 1445 H, including the Insan Harita employees on site. Despite being away from their families, they were able to celebrate the holiday together in a familial atmosphere.
 
Sarifuddin Usman, an employee of PT Megah Surya Pertiwi, one of Harita Nickel's business units that operates a high-grade nickel processing plant, shares his experience. Having worked at PT MSP for nine years, he has celebrated Eid al-Adha on the company's premises six times. While he sometimes feels saddened by not being able to gather with his family, he also expresses happiness in being able to celebrate the holiday with his coworkers on site.
 
“It's a bummer I often have to spend Eid away from the family at work, but I'm grateful the workplace feels like a second home. Even away from my loved ones, the crew here makes the Eid feel just as special.
 
Likewise, Tamim Murrah Ismail, Foreman Weighbridge of PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), who has celebrated Eid al-Adha on site four times in six years of working at Harita Nickel. 
 
"It's called love and work," Tamim says, laughing. "Despite being away from my family, the celebrations here always feel special. My coworkers feel like a second family to me," he continues.
 
Tamim and Sarifuddin's experience celebrating Eid al-Adha in the company environment not only reflects the cohesiveness between employees, but also strengthens the values of togetherness that exist at Harita Nickel.
 
Meanwhile, after the Eid prayer, the festivities continued with sacrificial animal slaughtering. A number of business units carried out sacrificial animal slaughtering in their operational areas. The animals were then distributed to the community and employees as a form of direct contribution in strengthening social ties and providing benefits to the local community.
 
This year, MSP and PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) were each recorded as having distributed 4 goats, HPL 3 goats and a cow, while PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) sacrificed a cow.

Familiarity in Kinship, Harita Nickel Employees Celebrate Eid al-Adha at Site Obi

PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) Tbk, also known as Harita Nickel, held a tree planting event on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, to commemorate World Environment Day. The event, titled “A Journey to a Greener Future,” was attended by 50 employees from various departments and contractor representatives.
Irgi Ahmad Sahresi, Chairman of the World Environment Day Committee, said the tree planting event was held in a ex mining area within the company's operations. The goal is to restore the land to its original condition.
“Over 150 tree seedlings were planted across this 0.5&nbsp;hectare plot, with various species including jabon merah (Neolamarckia macrophylla), Australian pine (Casuarina equisetifolia), eucalyptus, and several local trees. These species were selected for their suitability to the soil conditions of the ex mining area,” he explained.
Irgi further elaborated that World Environment Day was celebrated with various other activities in addition to tree planting. These began with an environmental discussion on May 25 and continued with cleanliness and creativity competitions among employee dormitories.
 
"These efforts aim to raise employee awareness about the importance of environmental care. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, not just a one-time event," he emphasized.
 
For World Environment Day 2024, Harita Nickel and its business units on Obi Island organized various activities. Along with PT Trimegah Bangun Persada, other units like PT Halmahera Persada Lygend and PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel held similar events. These activities involved employees, local students, and university experts, showcasing the company's commitment to environmental sustainability.

Harita Nickel Preserves the Environment with Tree Planting

Harita Nickel organized an Enviro Talk to commemorate World Environment Day 2024. The discussion, themed “Fighting Plastics One Bag at a Time,” addressed the issue of plastic waste within the company's operational areas and explored concrete steps for its management.&nbsp;
The Enviro Talk was held on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at the cinema of PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, a Harita Nickel business unit operating a nickel limonite processing and refining plant using High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) technology. The event was attended by company management, academics, and hundreds of employees from various Harita Nickel business units.
The first speaker, Mochamad Candra Wirawan Arief, PhD, a lecturer from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Universitas Padjajaran, explained the environmental hazards of plastic waste and management strategies. He highlighted that the increasing use of single-use plastics has significantly contributed to global plastic waste.
He also emphasized the need for collaboration and individual responsibility in environmental conservation, suggesting that reducing single-use plastics, such as using tote bags for shopping, could have a substantial impact if adopted collectively.
“For instance, using a tote bag when shopping. While the impact of a single individual may seem minimal, the collective adoption of this practice by all Insan Harita will yield significant benefits,” he explained, commending Harita personnel’s initiative to reduce plastic waste through the #AwalBaikdariObi movement.

Meanwhile, Iwan Syahroni, Deputy Department Head of HSE at Harita Nickel, outlined the company’s environmental management in each and every plan and operation of the company. Participants were informed about the company's initiatives to preserve the environment on Obi Island, which include monitoring water, air, and biodiversity quality, managing hazardous waste, reclamation and re-vegetation, and coral reef restoration. He also highlighted a number of environmental services such as artificial reef cubes from nickel slag and planting mangrove outside the company’s operational area.
“Our responsibility is to preserve the environment and ensure that our operational activities do not harm existing ecosystems,” Iwan stated.
The interactive Enviro Talk, which lasted approximately two hours, saw enthusiastic participation. Attendees were engaged and promptly asked questions during the Q&A session, demonstrating increased awareness of environmental issues and a commitment to taking concrete actions.
“This event provided valuable insights into waste management, particularly regarding the plastic waste we frequently use. I am now more aware of the importance of reducing single-use plastics and recognize that collective small actions can make significant differences,” said Lusty Rahmatina from the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Department.

This collaboration signifies the company's dedication to taking concrete steps towards sustainable environmental impact reduction.

Harita Enviro Talk Outlines Concrete Steps to Reduce Plastic Waste

Environmental education should be incorporated from a young age. For Harita Nickel, an integrated nickel mining and processing technology company, this initiative is a key element of its sustainability policy. The goal is to develop an environmental program that positively influences the surrounding community.
On Thursday, June 1, 2024, Harita Nickel invites 176 students from Loji Permai Junior High School and Tunas Muda High School in Kawasi Village to participate in the "Let’s 3Rs!" program in commemoration of World Environment Day as part of the Harita Mengajar (Harita Teaching) initiative. This program encourage the participants to apply the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R). 
 
The students learned about the importance of sorting different types of waste and its impact on the environment. They were also invited to participate in direct waste management by using painted jerry cans to plant trees.&nbsp;

"The jerry cans we use are sourced from our industry. Along with teaching the reuse of materials, we encourage students to decorate their school environment with plants that produce oxygen," explained Topan Prasetyo, Site Deputy General Manager of PT Dharma Cipta Mulia, one of Harita Nickel's business units that manages the Obi Industrial Estate. 
 
Topan reiterated the company's commitment to supporting environmentally friendly education, hoping that this creative and enjoyable activity would raise awareness among students about the significance of environmental protection.
 
Meanwhile, the Principal of Tunas Muda Kawasi High School, Obet Siar, welcomed this Harita Mengajar activity. He agreed that protecting the environment must be done together, and therefore the school is ready to support the company's initiatives for the benefit of the community.
 
“I agree that it is not only the company but all stakeholders in Kawasi Village who are in charge of protecting the environment so that our environmental conditions remain sustainable,” he said, emphasizing that industrial presence has brought economic improvement, but on the other hand also maintains environmental sustainability.
 
One of the students, M Thalib Hazan, said he was happy to participate in the Harita Mengajar activities held at his school. The 10th grade student of Tunas Muda Kawasi High School said that the environmental education delivered through practices and games could be easily absorbed by the students. 
 
“The event was fun, filled with games and prizes. We also learned a lot about how to protect the environment by keeping it clean and reducing plastic waste,” he said enthusiastically. 
 
In addition to schools, various World Environment Day events are also held within the company by involving employees to take concrete actions such as planting trees, reducing plastic waste, and at the peak, a talk show will be held inviting academics from universities.

Environmental Education, Harita Nickel Encourage Students in Kawasi to Manage Waste

The Environment Department of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (PT TBP), also known as Harita Nickel, hosted a discussion named “Is Our Mining Damaging the Environment?” at Kahyangan Cafe on Saturday, May 25, 2024. The discussion, which was held in commemoration of World Environment Day, was attended by employees from across departments to discuss the company's commitment to good mining practices.
Environment & Business Improvement PT TBP, Dedy Amrin as the speaker was presented the company’s commitment to sustainable mining management. He stated that this commitment aligns with the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation No. 26 of 2018 on Good Mining Practices and the Supervision of Mineral and Coal Mining.
 
“From the six aspects of Good Mining Practices regulated by the government, the company has implemented all of them, including the environmental management,” he explained.
 Furthermore, Dedy explained several efforts made by the company to minimize environmental impact of mining activities. These efforts include routine air quality monitoring, hazardous waste management, overburden management, water quality management using several settling ponds, and ongoing rehabilitation and re-vegetation initiatives.
 
“People often associate mining with environmental damage. Is that true? Let’s address it within our mining operation. As you can see, there is no scattered ore, the reclaimed land is green, and as you can see the sea in Kawasi remains blue,” he explained, emphasizing that the company’s commitment is not just to fulfill obligations but also to provide added value to the surrounding community.
 
The discussion, which lasted for about two hours, was interactive. Despite being held at night after a full day of work, employees were engaged and enthusiastic throughout the event. The discussion was presented in a relaxed cafe atmosphere and was also entertained with music played by the employees.
 
In addition to celebrating World Environment Day, this discussion also demonstrated Harita Nickel's commitment as an integrated nickel mining and processing technology company to responsibly and sustainably carrying out downstream mandates.

World Environment Day 2024, Harita Nickel Employees Share The Company’s Commitment to Good Mining Practices

Jakarta - Harita Nickel won the Excellence in Environment Video Content award at the Mata Lokal Awards during the Mata Lokal Fest 2024. This award was given for the company's success and commitment to environmental management and sustainable business practices through its nickel industry downstream program. Additionally, Harita Nickel is considered to have a positive impact on the local community and the national economy.
With the theme “Local Thriving in the Digital Era,” this annual event by Tribunnews aims to showcase more local stories.
 
“There are several components that the judges look at. Among them is how the brand solves problems with an engaging creative process. Next is interaction. How the brand can communicate with the locals and how the locals can communicate with the brand,” said Dian Gemiano, CMO of KG Media, who also served as one of the panel judges, in his speech.
 
The video titled “Dedikasi Untuk Lingkungan” (Dedication to the Environment) the fourth episode in Harita Nickel’s series “Ekspedisi Hilirisasi Anak Bangsa” (Expedition of the Nation’s Downstreaming), succeeded in captivating the panel of judges. It depicted sustainable and environmentally friendly mining practices, complemented by terrific collaboration with the local community to ensure that mining activities provide maximum benefits without damaging the environment.
 
This practice has been appreciated by several parties, including environmental activist from North Maluku, Usman Mansur, who believes that Harita Nickel plays a role in helping the education and economy sectors of the community around Obi Island.
 
Moreover, Marine Planktonlogy Expert, Prof. Dr. Ir. Inneke F. M. Rumengan, also stated that the ecological condition of the sea around Obi Island is quite stable and not under anthropogenic pressure, including from mining activities.
 
The Mata Lokal Award 2024 was presented directly by KG Media’s Chief of Revenue Officer, Moris Rusmanto, to Anie Rahmi, Corporate Affairs Manager of Harita Nickel.

The event, attended by Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno, Minister of Communication and Information Technology Budi Ari Setiadi, and Chairman of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly Bambang Soesatyo, also serves as a moment to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability and collaboration between companies, government, and the community in maintaining environmental conservation amidst industrial development.
