The development of digital technology has brought significant changes to human civilization. Various innovations continue to emerge, including electronic sports, also known as e-sports. At present, e-sports is not only for entertainment, but has also become a prestigious competitive arena. It has even developed into a professional sports branch, competing internationally at various levels.
The phenomenon of e-sports fever has also taken place at the Obi Site, Harita Nickel. One of the most popular games among Harita employees is Mobile Legends. This online game is played via cell phones by 10 players divided into 2 teams. The two teams, each consisting of 5 members, compete in strategy and agility. Good coordination, effective communication, and precise decision-making are necessary to win. These are also essential in our work, where good teamwork is the key to success.

As a manifestation of the company's concern for employees' leisure activities, the company held a Mobile Legend competition during the Independence Day celebration in July-August 2023. This activity received an enthusiastic response from employees. E-sports enthusiasts flocked to enliven the competition held at each business unit.

It didn't stop there. The competition continued between business units, packaged as the Harita Nickel 2023 Olympics. The champions from each business unit, including the e-sports event, then competed in the Olympics to become the best team across the entire Obi site.

In addition to being a recreational event, this Olympics also serves as a means of strengthening relationships among employees and fostering camaraderie among fellow enthusiasts. Here, the people of Harita mingle without barriers between departments, business units, and even positions. They all become a unified part of Harita Nickel, an integrated mining and downstream group of companies operating on Obi Island.

As a company that prioritizes innovation and employee well-being, Harita Nickel has set a true example that recreational activities such as the Mobile Legends e-sports competition can have a positive impact on the sustainability of the company's operations.

Employees, who are a vital asset to the company, are not only expected to work for the bottom line but are also given space to express themselves and socialize in their work environment. When employees feel comfortable and have a sense of family in the workplace, productivity inevitably increases.

Harita Nickel provides various facilities for the comfort of its employees. These include Internet access, sports facilities, and entertainment, all of which are provided free of charge to employees. For example, with Internet access, Harita employees who enjoy e-sports can spend their free time playing Mobile Legends. The same goes for physical sports enthusiasts, who can indulge in their hobbies while exercising.

Holding an e-sports competition: Harita Nickel provides recreational space for employees

For the past three consecutive months, Harita Nickel has received awards for its consistent application of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles throughout its operations on Obi Island. The most recent award was presented by the Advocacy Consortium for Mining (KATAM) together with the North Maluku Association of Indonesian Mining Experts (PERHAPI) on the occasion of the 78th Mining and Energy Anniversary held in Ternate on Tuesday, October 10.
 
In the previous two months, similar awards were presented by two leading national media companies. Harita Nickel was honored with the Detikcom Awards 2023 in September 2023 for being an outstanding integrated nickel company in the field of CSR. In August, our company was also recognized as the recipient of the TrenAsia ESG Award 2023 for the smelter category titled "Action". 
What did they say about Harita Nickel that made it deserving of the ESG Award? 
"There are several concepts that we have observed working very well in the community, including the Community Entrepreneurship Unit program (Kawasi Unik), the Self-Reliance and Strengthening of Village Entrepreneurs (Gemar Papeda) movement, and the Pijar Obi program. Therefore, the community development and empowerment programs implemented by Harita Nickel are very measurable and directional, which is the main reason for us to award Harita Nickel," said Muhlis Ibrahim, coordinator of KATAM North Maluku. 
Similarly, Detikcom also recognizes Harita Nickel for not only being committed to ESG principles, but also for consistently implementing them through its Integrated Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM), which consists of five pillars, namely health, education, economy, infrastructure, and socio-culture. 
Detikcom also noted that Harita Nickel has made a significant contribution to economic growth in North Maluku. Citing data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the economic growth in North Maluku reached 22.94% in 2022, higher than the national average of 5.31%. The success of Harita Nickel is expected to inspire other companies to promote the acceleration and equal distribution of the national economy. 
The awards given to our company were not given arbitrarily, but were based on judgments involving experts from various fields. For your information, the TrenAsia ESG Awards 2023 involved a panel of judges from the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo), the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), the National Governance Policy Committee (KNKG), the Institute for Sustainability & Agility, and the editorial board of TrenAsia.com. 
These various awards once again reaffirm the recognition from various parties for Harita Nickel's commitment and consistency in implementing sustainable mining governance and nickel downstreaming. The company's efforts have been recognized as having a positive impact on the surrounding community and environment.

Hattrick! 3 Months in a Row Harita Nickel Receives ESG Award

Communication skills are essential in every job. To improve these skills, Harita Nickel's Corporate Communications Department organized a training session on public speaking and digital marketing. The event was held on September 16 and 17, 2023 at Room 305, Main Office of PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF).
Over the course of two days, 30 participants from various departments across all business units learned the techniques of public speaking and delivering engaging presentations. The training, conducted by communications and media professionals from Tempo Komunitas, was both engaging and interactive. Participants were not only taught theory but were also involved in practical exercises. The learning environment was made fun with the inclusion of games and door prizes.
After attending the training, participants expressed that they had gained significant new knowledge. Ferrinda, one of a participant from the production department of PT HJF, stated that the knowledge gained from the training was directly applicable to their work. After the training, they felt more confident when communicating with colleagues and even when speaking in front of a large audience. In addition to acquiring new knowledge, the participants also expressed their pleasure in attending the training on their day off.&nbsp;
Susanty Feronica Zees, a participant from the Processing Plant Department of PT MSP, felt that the time she sacrificed for rest was well worth it because she had the opportunity to learn directly from experienced professionals. What left a lasting impression on her was the sense of camaraderie throughout the training, which fostered a sense of belonging within the "Big Harita Nickel family".

Improving Communication Skills Harita's Employee, Corporate Communications Department Holds Public Speaking Training

After graduating from the mining major, Irfan Hayatudin briefly worked as an accounting assistant at a palm oil company. It wasn't the job he wanted, but Irfan stuck with it. He did it because he didn't want to disappoint his parents. They had struggled to put their child through college, only to see him graduate and remain unemployed. So even though it wasn't what he had hoped for, working was a non-negotiable option.
After seven months of working outside his field, news came from the head of the Mining Engineering program at Halmahera Polytechnic. A lecturer from his alma mater told him that a nickel smelter on Obi Island was opening a management trainee program.
Irfan didn't miss the opportunity. In November 2015, he participated in the three-month management trainee selection process at PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP). Out of 500 participants, 200 were deemed successful and given the opportunity to spend three months training in China.
The opportunity to study in China broadened Irfan's horizons in the smelting industry. He was proud to have gained a wealth of knowledge during his training program there. "It was an unforgettable experience to set foot in China and learn about the smelting technology used there," he said.
Three months passed, and Irfan returned home to fulfill a two-year commitment to work at MSP as a Control Room Staff. His duties included monitoring all the operating equipment and controlling the temperature and pressure of each unit in use.
Working in a company with limited time off, Irfan often filled his free time by being active on social media. His TikTok account now has 202,000 followers, and much of his content has gone viral, seen by millions of people. Yes, social media became a space to fill his "loneliness" of working in the smelting industry with a roster system, far away from his family and even his girlfriend!
Thanks to his popularity on social media, Irfan was selected as one of the participants in the Extra Miles Day organized by the Corporate Communications Department. Now he no longer feels lonely as he has made many acquaintances from different departments and even other business units. He is proud to have had the opportunity to visit all of Harita Nickel's operations, from upstream to downstream. He shared this experience on social media, packaged in his characteristic humorous yet positive style.
Reflecting on his life's journey, Irfan paused on the words of a much admired figure. It was Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, who once said, "You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward."
"Every point we pass through in life, even if it's not pleasant, is not without reason. The key is to keep striving to be better by learning and working hard, and to have a positive outlook on whatever destiny God gives us," he concluded.

​Irfan Hayatudin: Once Lost and Lonely, Now Finds His Dream

The celebration of the 78th Indonesian Independence Day at the Obi Site was successfully held in August 2023. Each business unit celebrated by organizing various competitions. Unlike previous years, this year's independence commemoration festivities included a business unit competition packaged into an Olympic event, dubbed the Harita Nickel Olympics. The purpose of this competition is to not only determine a winner but to also foster a sense of community.
The Harita Team is invited to reflect on notable events from the Indonesian Independence Day festivities, including unique, futuristic, humorous, and sacred moments. Additionally, it is important to consider what lessons can be learned from these experiences.&nbsp;

Take a look and explore the preservation of a traditional sport, Sepak Takraw, which is uncommon in major cities. Watching the sport played at the Obi Site, as seen at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), provides a traditional sports experience. The game involves players playing with a rattan ball using their head, chest, and feet. Additionally, spectators can enjoy acrobatic movements like the somersault smash.&nbsp;

Building e-Sport-style Teamwork

One of the e-sports being contested is Mobile Legends. Celebrating Independence Day, PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) hosted entertaining competitions packaged in the Independence Carnival to make the festivities more. The Harita company held a variety of departmental competitions including costume contests, chants, tug-of-war, sack races, balloon dances, and cracker-eating contests. The objective was for all team members to return to work with a renewed perspective and improved cohesion.

The Vibrant Celebration of the 78th Indonesian Independence Day Towards the Harita Nickel Olympics

The Water Supply Production Team at the Water Intake and Marine Environment of <a href="https://hpalnickel.com/" target="_blank">PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPAL)</a> successfully carried out a cleaning activity of the High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Water Intake pipe screenbar. This activity was carried out in response to a recent decrease in water discharge into the water intake.
To overcome this problem, the team quickly dived to the water intake location. Diving was done to clean the screenbar from marine growth as well as dirt. This is done carefully to ensure that water discharge into the water intake can return to normal and function optimally.
Cleaning activities lasted for approximately 6 days starting on Monday, July 10, 2023 and ended on Saturday, July 15, 2023.
For information, water intake is the first place where seawater enters for treatment. The main function of the water intake is to clean seawater from debris. To ensure the use and discharge of seawater poses no harm to the marine environment, Harita Nickel implements a series of filters by maintaining the temperature of the water released into the water body. We should be proud that Indonesian integrated downstream operated by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada, also known as Harita Nickel, has drawn attention from the world's mining industry players. Harita Nickel's presence in the forum as part of delegation of the Indonesian Mining Experts Association (Perhapi) to introduce Indonesian mining to international world.
HSE Director of Harita Nickel, Tonny H Gultom, as one of the speakers in a panel discussion session explained his research on Mixed Hydroxide Presipitate (MHP) products that have been produced by Harita Nickel which can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector.
According to Tonny, the most common questions asked by congress participants were related to developments in the nickel downstream industry and utilization of other minerals contained in nickel including its development plan. 
"So many of them were curious about the rapid development of nickel downstream industry in Indonesia, and especially for Harita Nickel because it has successfully produced nickel derivative products up to Nickel Sulfate and the next Cobalt Sulfate," Tonny said.
From the presentation and discussion room, switch to the Exhibition Hall. There were dozens of booths from various delegations. One of them was Perhapi, where Harita Nickel joined in. Tonny explained how the company, which initially only mined nickel, has now succeeded in building an integrated downstream. Where all operations from upstream to downstream are in one area, namely the Obi Industrial Estate. According to him, the concept of vertically integrated mining has many advantages.
Furthermore, the member of Perhapi's expert council said that integrated concepts also provide easy access to export processes. With this facility, products to be exported can be done directly through special terminal access that has obtained government permission.
"Because the mining site and the downstream industry of PT TBP Tbk has a special terminal which of course has received permission from the Government, the Customs and Excise officers at the location can do a direct calculation of the export value and tax calculation," Tonny added.
PT TBP Tbk's integrated mining also allows savings from the financing aspect, namely hauling and freighting costs. You can imagine, refineries or smelters that do not have ore supply around the factory, they have to bear the high cost of the transportation process which is quite large. 
"With this integrated concept, in addition to providing certainty of nickel ore supply, it is also able to save transportation costs and minimize the carbon footprint left behind," said Tonny, that the integrated concept also contributes to reducing environmental impacts.
In the international congress, there were also a number of discussions on mining derivative products, especially nickel, in a sustainable supply chain value.&nbsp;

For example, the incident of the Todoku river overflowing into the residential area of Kawasi Village on Friday, June 16, 2023, which was widely circulated on social media and reported by several online media outlets. From the circulating information, Harita Nickel, the owner of the Mining Business License (IUP) through PT Trimegah Bangun Perada (PT TBP), the source of Todoku river, was accused of being the cause of the flood in Kawasi Village.

Is that information true? Let's find out from competent sources who know the situation on the ground exactly.

The Head of Mining Engineering at PT TBP, Primus Priyanto, provided an explanation regarding the matter. According to him, the overflow of water from the Todoku river into the residential area was not caused by mining activities but rather due to high rainfall.

This explanation is supported by data from rainfall monitoring at five observation stations prepared by the company. The data shows that the rainfall during the incident on Friday (6/16/2023) exceeded 100 mm per day, classified as very heavy rainfall. There was even one point that reached 182 mm per day, which falls under the category of extreme rainfall.

The water overflowed into a small portion of the residential area with a height of 40 cm, which ironically was reported as a flash flood, originating from three points of the Todoku river.&nbsp;These points include the Elang Bridge, where no embankment was built due to it being used as an access point for residents, and the Merah Bridge. The high rainfall caused an increase in water discharge in the Todoku river, resulting in overflow at these three points.
Regarding the reported breach in the embankment, the company has indeed constructed embankments along the Todoku river, located behind the residential area.&nbsp;All of these embankments are in good condition. However, at the point where the overflow occurred, no embankment was built as it is used as an access route for residents.
So it can be affirmed that the company had undertaken mitigation efforts before the incident on June 16, 2023, occurred. Besides constructing embankments, the company has also created sedimentation ponds and widened the Todoku river, which originally had a width of 5-7 meters, to 17-20 meters.
"After the incident, we didn't remain idle. As of now, the temporary repair of the Elang Bridge has been completed. Next, we will proceed with the permanent repair of the bridge and the widening of the Todoku river watershed," he explained.

The company will also widen the Buaya Bridge, which leads to the mouth of the Todoku river. With the bridge repairs and the widening of the Todoku river watershed, it is hoped that similar incidents can be anticipated and prevented.
It can also be mentioned that the water inundation of up to 40 cm in a small portion of the residential area did not last long. The next day, on Saturday morning (17/6/2023), after the water overflowed into the settlement the previous afternoon, the residents' activities returned to normal.
By the way, concerning the overflow of the Todoku river into the village settlement in Kawasi, it turns out that it is not the first time it has occurred. According to the Head of Kawasi Village, Arifin Saroa, floods have occurred several times, even before the company's activities. The cause is the high rainfall from higher grounds to the residential area, which is at a lower contour surface.
That's the explanation regarding the overflow of the Todoku river into the Kawasi village settlement last month. So, once again, we can cross-check any information with competent parties to verify its accuracy.

Ngibi art performance is once again held in Soligi Village, one of the villages within the operational circle of Harita Nickel in Obi Island. This annual event serves as a platform to preserve traditions and at the same time knit togetherness among residents. 
As in previous years, this year's Ngibi art performance takes place during the celebration of Eid al-Adha, precisely on Friday night (June 30, 2023), a day after the predominantly Muslim community of Soligi Village commemorates the Feast of Sacrifice.

This year's event can be considered more festive. This is because, in addition to showcasing the Ngibi dance, there were also competitions held for the Cungka dance and Pencak Silat martial arts. The participants were local children, from those in elementary school to high school.

Not only the competition participants, but also the residents who wanted to showcase their skills in dance and martial arts were allowed to perform in the center of the arena, which was surrounded by hundreds of people of various ages.

John Sri Cay Simbolon, the Community Relations Superintendent of Harita Nickel, stated that the company's support for the Ngibi art exhibition in Soligi Village is part of the Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM) in the social-cultural aspect.

He said that art as an expression of culture and community wisdom needs to be preserved. Through the Ngibi art performance, he hopes to be a reminder for the younger generation to preserve the traditions that have been inherited by their ancestors.
"When Soligi's children leave their village to pursue their dreams, whether continuing their education or working in a company, wherever they are, they must uphold the traditional values that have been inherited by their ancestors," John explained.
Furthermore, he said that Soligi Village children are the future hope for development in their region in the future. In addition to introducing tradition, Harita Nickel also supports access to quality education for children on Obi Island. &nbsp;
"This Ngibi art performance is also one of our means to stay in touch with residents in a family atmosphere," he said. 

<h2>The Origin of Ngibi Traditional&nbsp;Dance

Ngibi is not just mere entertainment; it holds a profound meaning for the people of Soligi Village.

Hardin, the Vice Chairman of the Village Consultative Body (BPD) of Soligi Village, explained the origins of Ngibi, which has been a long-standing tradition in their community. According to him, the Ngibi dance is a tradition of the Buton people in Southeast Sulawesi. The majority of the ancestors of the Soligi residents come from Buton. Besides Soligi, the Buton tribe also inhabits other villages on Obi Island.

In addition to the Ngibi dance, the performance that night also featured the Cungka dance accompanied by traditional musical instruments such as large and small gongs, as well as drums. According to the traditional literature of the Buton people, the Cungka dance, performed by female dancers, symbolizes the journey of human life from the womb.

The Cungka dance is then followed by the Ngibi dance, performed in pairs, as an expression of joy for the journey of human life from water to the infusion of the soul into a lump of flesh. In the Ngibi dance, male dancers are not allowed to touch the female dancers as a form of respect for the significant role that women play in life.
 
Originally, the Ngibi dance was performed after bountiful harvests as an expression of gratitude. However, over time, this art form has also been showcased in various other events, such as wedding ceremonies and community gatherings.

To preserve this tradition, in recent years, Harita Nickel and the local village administration have organized Ngibi art exhibitions involving the entire community of Soligi Village. For the past two years, the event has been held after Eid al-Adha, while the previous year it was held after Eid al-Fitr.

"We are very grateful to Harita for supporting the people of Soligi in preserving their ancestral traditions," explained Hardin, a sentiment that was also affirmed by Wahyudin Hamami, the Secretary of Soligi Village, who was present at the evening performance.

Persistent, intelligent, and never give up. These three traits seem fitting to describe the character of Yufita Tuhuteru. As an Analyst at the Technology Department of PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), she has proven that local residents on Obi Island can achieve higher education and pursue a professional career in their hometown. 
Yufita began her career journey at Harita Nickel by joining PT HPL through the Management Trainee program. It is a company program designed to identify and groom new talents for future managerial positions.

The 28-year-old woman from Soligi Village, a village within the operational circle of Harita Nickel on Obi Island, was initially assigned to the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP). Due to her hard work and dedication, she was promoted to the position of WWTP Foreman after just one year. One of her responsibilities is to supervise the residue from the processing and refining of nickel using High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) technology, specifically dry tail.

From being a WWTP Foreman, Yufita now holds the position of Analyst in the Technology Department. Her daily tasks involve analyzing production samples to ensure the quality of the resulting products.

Yufita proudly expresses her satisfaction in being a part of Harita Nickel. Here, she can apply the knowledge she gained during her studies in Chemical Engineering at the Universitas Muslim Indonesia for her bachelor's degree (S1) and the same field for her master's degree (S2) at Universitas Gadjah Mada. Moreover, as a local resident, she can contribute to the development of her region.

"It's a personal pride to contribute to Harita Nickel, the first company that produces raw materials for electric vehicle batteries in Indonesia. Considering the many new technologies used here, such as the HPAL process and nickel sulfate processing, there is certainly a lot to learn," she says proudly.

Yufita has a big dream of promoting better access to quality education for the people of Obi Island. She also hopes that the youth in her region have a strong desire to learn so that they can excel academically and professionally.

In her opinion, career opportunities for local youth in Obi Island, and generally in North Maluku as one of the regions with the largest nickel reserves in Indonesia, are widely open. Moreover, the company she works for prioritizes hiring local residents. Out of more than 13,000 workers on-site, over 50 percent come from North Maluku.

However, this avid reader of journals during her spare time also acknowledges that the youth in North Maluku still lack skills.

"The youth in Obi Island, especially in fields like chemical engineering, civil engineering, or metallurgical engineering, have very limited education and skills. I have conveyed this to local community groups and also to the company management, urging them to provide opportunities for non-skilled youth in North Maluku. They should be given training to develop their skills," she explains.

Yufita has proven that limitations should not hinder someone from achieving their goals. Despite being born in one of the Least Developed, Frontline, and Outermost (3T) regions in North Maluku, she managed to attain higher education up to the master's level and apply her knowledge by pursuing a career in the largest electric vehicle battery material-producing company in Indonesia, which operates adjacent to her hometown.

"Young people must be productive, innovative, and capable of competing positively in every job we undertake," she concludes.
