"Tak kenal maka tak sayang" this Indonesian proverb underlies the Extra Miles Day: Going The Distance for Sustainability. The activity, led by the Internal Communication team in the Corporate Communication department in collaboration with HR and GA in each business unit of Harita Nickel, is intended to provide a closer introduction to the Insan Harita (Harita's People) about the entire operational process of the company they work for.
The rapid development of the company with its expanding production lines downstream poses both opportunities and challenges. One of them is how to unite the spirits of employees, who currently number nearly 14,000 and are spread across several business units operating in Site Obi, into one cohesive unit of Harita Nickel.

To address this challenge, Extra Miles Day (EMD) is organized. The activity is held on the employees' day off to avoid disrupting the company's operational activities. On the other hand, participating in this activity on their day off requires effort and sacrifice. But it is all worthwhile for the experience gained.

Currently, the EMD activity has been carried out up to the second batch, which took place on June 25, 2023. The second batch was attended by 18 selected participants. When combined with Batch 1, the total number of EMD alumni currently amounts to 30 individuals.

<h2>What excitement and experiences did the participants gain?</h2>
Meida&nbsp;Fikiyawati admitted to gaining new knowledge after participating in the EMD activity. As an employee of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) who is involved in daily Grade Control mining activities, she became aware of the process of nickel processing, from the nickel mined by TBP to the production of the final ferronickel product at PT Halmahera Jaya Ferronikel (HJF). She also learned about the operations of the HPAL plant operated by PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), which now produces Nickel Sulfate downstream and will soon be followed by Cobalt Sulfate. Muhammad Taufik, an employee of PT HPL who works in the Plant department, had a different experience. From this activity, he gained insights into the company's efforts to restore mined land through reclamation activities, aiming to bring back greenery. Additionally, he learned about the conservation of endemic wildlife on Obi Island to prevent their extinction.
Fajri Muliawan, a Laboratory Staff&nbsp;at Harita Clinic,&nbsp;mentioned that he is happy&nbsp;being able to witness firsthand the new settlement in Kawasi Village that the company had prepared to support the government's program. According to him, the new settlement is more organized and suitable for living.
"What's even more important is that through this activity, we can get to know friends from other business units. It's fun and we have more friends. Yes, both Batch 1 and Batch 2 participants of EMD had the opportunity to visit Harita Nickel's operational areas from upstream to downstream. They learned about mining activities, post-mining reclamation, nickel processing and refining in the plants, as well as waste management. Moreover, they also had the chance to witness the Community Development and Empowerment (CDE) programs conducted by the company for the surrounding communities.
Furthermore, the highlight of this year's EMD event will be the Harita Next Gen Summit. Here, all EMD alumni will have the opportunity to meet and engage in discussions with the company's board of directors.

Extra Miles Day: Introducing the Operations of Harita Nickel from Upstream to Downstream

"Harita Mengajar"&nbsp;program is once again held with the theme "Edugathering: Independence in Learning for Obi Children". By learning directly in nature as an <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community/education-programs" target="_blank">educational</a> medium, it is hoped that children will have a fun learning experience.
A total of 150 students from SDN 217 Halmahera Selatan and MI Al-Habsyi in Kawasi Village participated in the event held in Salam Kawasi, Saturday (10/6/2023).
Salam Kawasi is an integrated agricultural learning center prepared by Harita Nickel for the communities around its operations on Obi Island. From crop cultivation to fisheries and livestock farming, everything is available here.

All participants are invited to get a closer look at fish farming, livestock rearing, greenhouses, and the composting facility managed by the company.
The children from Kawasi are also taken to witness firsthand the process of planting seeds and the production of compost made from organic waste and animal manure. Through this experiential learning activity, the company aims to create a more enjoyable learning environment for children.
Lusiana La Jame, one of the teachers representing SDN 217 Halmahera Selatan who was present to accompany her students, expressed her appreciation for the company.
"Of course, as teachers, we are greatly assisted by the program organized by Harita. Through this program, students are invited to learn and get acquainted with the environment through outdoor learning methods that are not boring," she said.
According to Lusi, learning activities like this are more effective for children because they are presented in an enjoyable way. Furthermore, she hopes that the company will regularly organize kind of&nbsp;activities like this in the future.

Meanwhile, Broto Suwarso, Community Development Manager of Harita Nickel, stated that this activity is an implementation of the Community Development and Empowerment (CDE) program in the field of education. Harita Mengajar itself is a routine program held by the Community Development department, involving students from schools located around the mining area of Obi Island.
"The purpose of this activity is to develop educational media that gichildren so that they don't feel confined to learning only in indoor settings, prioritizing experience-based learning," he said.
Furthermore, Broto also explained that in the future, this program will be scheduled for categorical groups. Not only elementary school children, but also other educational levels such as junior high school, high school, and even parents, according to their respective fields, whether it be social, economic, or others.
The Edugathering activity was also attended by the Environment department at Harita Nickel, which enlivened the event with a Harita Talk session discussing plastic waste. This is in line with the vision of World Environment Day, which was celebrated on June 5th with the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution."
Participants were invited to learn more about the types of waste. They also gained knowledge about the short-term and long-term impacts of indiscriminate waste disposal. In addition, participants were invited to sing together and participate in a prize quiz related to waste issues.

Edugathering, Harita Nickel Provides a Fun Learning Experience for Children in Obi

Harita Nickel fellow readers may be familiar with Soya-Soya dance. This dance is often found among Obi Island community, South Halmahera, North Maluku. For example, in welcoming regent or other honored guests who visit residents. Soya-Soya Dance also often appears in various activities held by Harita Nickel.
So what does Soya-Soya Dance mean to the local community and where did it come from? Check it out to the end!
North Maluku is one of the provinces in Indonesia that has abundant natural resources. Spices from this province became one of the treasures hunted by colonizers in the past, especially for cloves and nutmeg. The Portuguese even occupied North Maluku Province to monopolize the spice trade.
Apart from its rich natural resources, the province nicknamed Moloku Kie Raha is also known for its culture. Soya-Soya dance is one of North Maluku's traditional cultures that is quite popular among local people and tourists.
Soya-Soya dance is a war-dance that is part of the traditional cultural heritage of North Maluku. This dance is generally performed by male dancers who wear costumes similar to ancient sultanate soldiers. The number of dancing personnel is 3 or more people with an odd count. 
This dance is very popular in Ternate, North Maluku and is often an important part of various events including welcoming VIP guests, traditional ceremonies, art performances and cultural festivals.
<h2>Origin of Soya-Soya Dance</h2>
Based on historical records, Soya-Soya Dance was originally used to raise the morale of Ternate Sultanate soldiers when storming Fort Nostra Senora Del Rosario (Kastela Fort) in Ternate which was occupied by the Portuguese on February 25, 1570.
The invasion was led by Sultan Baabullah with an aim to retrieve his father's mortal remains, Sultan Khairun, who was killed by Portuguese soldiers. In its later days, the raid turned into a revival of Kayoa people's struggle against Portuguese invaders at the end of 16th century.
As a tribute to this heroic event, Ternate Sultanate artists then developed Soya-soya Dance as one of the dances that reflects a spirit of courage and past glory that must be passed on to future generations.
If traced from its history, Soya-soya Dance is not only part of Ternate Sultanate culture but also a reflection of Kayoa people's struggle history, in South Halmahera Regency. The Ternate Sultanate warriors who initially invaded the Portuguese to retrieve the remains of Sultan Khairun, evolved into a resistance to repel the invaders. 
Soya-Soya dance is also part of North Maluku culture in general. Not only in Ternate City or South Halmahera Regency, even children in villages in North Maluku have been taught Soya-Soya dance since they were young. Now, the dance is even taught back in elementary school.
<h2>Meaning of Soya-Soya Dance</h2>
The word Soya-Soya means "unyielding". Soya-Soya Dance is a traditional dance with distinctive movements and depicts attacking, evading, and defending movements as in war. In each movement, dancers portray an unyielding spirit and determination to defend their territory and culture.
In general, this dance is performed in groups with a minimum of 3 people and a maximum of unlimited as long as it is still an odd number. This number indicates that the odd number of troops will turn into an even number when added by a commander or troop leader.
Soya-Soya dancers usually wear white clothes with a colorful skirt-like connection cloth and a yellow headband as a symbol of a warrior. Accessories include a shield (salawaku) and a bamboo sword decorated with red, yellow and green palm leaves (ngana-ngana). It is accompanied by music from tifa (drum), saragai (gong), and tawa-tawa.
Soya-soya dance was originally performed as a way to honor the heroes' struggle to repel invaders who had long controlled their territory. However, at present, this dance also has an important meaning as an expression of community appreciation for the warriors who have worked hard to defend their homeland.
In addition, Soya-soya Dance is also a means to introduce local history and culture to the younger generation and the wider community. Through this dance, we are able to convey and appreciate the values of courage, unity, and unyielding spirit contained in local history and culture.

Soya-Soya Dance, Cultural Reflection of South Halmahera People

PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (NCKL) atau Harita Nickel menyalurkan bantuan hewan kurban sebanyak 31 ekor sapi dan 3 ekor kambing dalam rangka merayakan Idul Adha 1444 H / 2023 M. Sebagian besar dari hewan kurban tersebut diserahkan ke desa sekitar operasional perusahaan di Pulau Obi.
Head of Community Affairs Harita Nickel, Latif Supriadi said that distribution of sacrificial animals is routinely carried out every year as a manifestation of gratitude and concern for Harita Nickel to local communities around its operations.
He explained, the entire sacrificial animal donation had been distributed prior to Eid al-Adha 1444 H which falls on Thursday, June 29, 2023. To empower local communities' economy, he emphasized, sacrificial animals were purchased by the company from local breeders.
"Through this Eid al-Adha celebration, it is hoped that people especially around the company's operations can directly benefit from Harita Nickel's operations and strengthen ties between company and community," said Latif, Thursday (29/6/2023).

Harita Nickel's Community Relations Manager, Apolinavis F Mbata explained in more detail the distribution of sacrificial animals. From a total of 34 sacrificial animals, most of them were distributed to villages around Harita Nickel's operations in Obi Island. A total of 18 villages across three sub-districts in Obi Island, each received one cow.
"The sacrificial animals were handed over directly to Imams as Islamic religious leaders in each village, witnessed by local village government officials," he explained.
Meanwhile, 16 other sacrificial animals were distributed to several areas in North Maluku. Among them in Labuha, a capital city of South Halmahera Regency and Ternate City. Animal distribution was carried out by cooperating with a number of company partners, from government agencies, student organizations to media organizations.
Harita Nickel's concern for the community, especially in Obi Island, received appreciation from both government and local religious leaders.
Obi Sub-district Head, represented by Secretary Risno Tjia, in his speech on sacrificial animal ceremony in his area which was concentrated in Laiwui Village, expressed his gratitude to Harita Nickel. He encouraged that well established cooperation between company and community can continue to be improved.
"We thank you for the donation provided by Harita Nickel for all village communities in Obi Subdistrict. We hope this sacrificial animal donation can be useful for residents who are entitled to receive and need it," Risno said.
The same appreciation was also conveyed by the village government and religious leaders in South Obi Subdistrict. Gambaru Village Head, through Village Secretary Imanuel Sousa, said that sacrificial animal donation delivered by Harita Nickel is a manifestation of the company's concern for local people in Obi Island.
"On behalf of village government and the entire Gambaru village community, we support company operations. We hope that the company's presence will be able to support village government programs to improve people's welfare here," he said, agreed by Gambaru Village Imam, Guntur Flori.
As information, PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk through its subsidiary PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL) has officially operated a nickel sulfate plant and successfully conducted its first export on June 16, 2023. The plant that produces core material for making electric vehicle batteries is the first in Indonesia and the largest in the world.
In line with its business projections in supporting the Indonesian government's nickel downstreaming mandate, Harita Nickel continues to be committed to sustainable and responsible business governance practices by prioritizing environmental and social aspects. 
Harita Nickel's environmental and social responsibility is presented in the Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM) which focuses on four pillars including aspects of education, environment, health and community economic empowerment, which includes promoting the involvement of local women's groups.

Harita Nickel Distributes 34 Sacrificial Animals and Empower Local Breeders in Obi Island

ONE NIGHT, a fire broke out in Kawasi Village, South Halmahera, North Maluku. Getting this news, Harita Nickel's management immediately sent a rescue aid. A total of 3 firefighting units and 2 units of water trucks along with the Emergency Response Team (ERT) crew went to the fire location. 
Erich Marvin Rizal Mongdong, ERT Supervisor of PT Hamahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL), said fire in Kawasi Village was one of the toughest cases ever handled. This was because crowds of panicked residents had made it difficult for the ERT crew to reach the location.&nbsp; 
"[We] can't blame them, they instinctively wanted to help. If it was in a company environment, it would be easier to manage because employees and workers are already trained, knowing what to do," said Erich, recalling the disastrous event that happened on October 23, 2022.
 
Not only in the company environment, said Erich, ERT Harita Nickel is also responsive to emergency events around its nickel mining and downstream operations in Obi Island.

ERICH MONGDONG joined Harita Nickel in June 2021. His position as ERT Supervisor at PT HPL, Harita Nickel's business unit producing the first electric vehicle battery material in Indonesia. This position is linear with his previous experience in one of mining companies in Papua.
 
Despite his experience, Erich did not face any obstacles. At that time he did not have members who had received emergency response training. ERT's structure had not yet been established. This role was previously handled by Safety team under the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) division. 
But that situation did not discourage Erich. Instead of considering it an obstacle, the absence of an ERT structure actually challenged him. Assisted by Safety personnel, he slowly formed a team. Indeed, it was not an easy process. 
"People think that we are firefighters. But it's bigger than that, because we are also required to rescue at sea, at heights and other emergency situations," Erich explains.
 
Erich understands people's reluctance to join ERT because they don't understand what his team actually does. He continues to look for ways to provide explanations in a more understandable way.
 
"I told them that ERT is a combination of firefighting and Basarnas put together," he continued, but he got the same result. None of the 17 daily casual workers (THL) who had been offered, wanted to join. 
"Then we made a demonstration simulation exercise. I asked permission for our safety team to become guinea pigs. Only then did they understand what the ERT does. People started to want to join," he said, feeling relieved.
 
Two years on, PT HPL's ERT now has 18 trained personnel on 24-hour standby. The team is also strengthened by 60 volunteers from across departments. These volunteers undergo regular training every month. Whenever needed, they are ready to join the ERT crew in the field.
 
"What we train in ERT, they also get, the same knowledge. Starting from fire training, altitude, extrication rescue, water rescue, medical," Erich explained.
 
Thanks to Erich and his team's dedication and hard work, ERT, which was once unknown to many, is now well known. Erich's office at PT HPL's Office 911 is busy serving emergency calls every day. Not only work accidents, but also other emergency calls such as when an employee is sick. Even outside the company area, such as during last year's fire in Kawasi.

BEING an ERT Supervisor, Erich has a huge responsibility. He is required to coordinate his team members to work cohesively, carefully and with safety in mind. This is important to ensure both victim and crew are safe during rescue operations.
 
"I pay attention to every piece of equipment. If I see a member not wearing gloves, not wearing shoes, I will warn them. A supervisor must be able to care for his crew, pay attention to the smallest things," explained Erich.
 
Apart from safety, every personnel is also required to be always prepared. On the other hand, it is undeniable that everyone's work spirit experiences ups and downs. To foster and maintain his crew's morale, Erich instills in them that doing work is not solely for material purposes, but also based on human values.
 
"No matter how much money we have, it will run out. But if we want to seek rewards for our provision that will never run out, this is the place. Our profession is a humanitarian mission, we help people," said Erich, encouraging his members.
 
Erich's responsibility and dedication to his work was born out of a long process. Once, the 33-year-old Papua-born man had an experience that has changed his attitude to life today.
 
It happened when he was living in Yogyakarta a few years ago. It was in 2006, when there was a 5.9 SR earthquake in Yogyakarta. Erich, who was a member of a nature lovers group in his high school, was asked to volunteer helping medical workers who were overwhelmed with the victims. He remembers that event like apocalypse. It was chaotic; there were victims everywhere, crying and screaming from every direction. 
He was asked by a medical officer to look after a grandmother who was a victim of the earthquake with a severe injury to her eye. 
"All I remember is that I was asked to look after the grandmother, to talk to her, and to make sure she didn't fall asleep," Erich says, trying to recall his memories.
 
Erich tried to keep the victim conscious. He did as much as he could, but fate decided otherwise. The grandmother died on his lap. This experience was a great blow to him, who was still a teenager at that time. He was haunted by guilt for days because he thought that he had failed to help the victim.
 
" I was the most indifferent person ever. What's important is that my life is safe, that's enough. That experience became a trigger for me to care more about others, about my environment," Erich said.
 
Since then, he has been actively involved in social activities. He actualized it through nature lovers' activities at his school. Likewise, when he continued his studies at Pelita Bangsa University in Yogyakarta, majoring in Human Resource Management, his hangout was not far from the nature lovers community.
 
Despite having made significant progress, Erich still has big dreams. He hopes that ERT can focus more on countermeasures in the future. Potential accidents should be mitigated first, so that early prevention efforts can be made. 
" It's called the Emergency Preparedness and Response Team. Before responding, it has been mitigated first. If possible, there should be no calls. This is what we have slowly started to do," said Erich, optimistically. 
Erich also hopes that safety-first attitude and care for others will become a culture for every employee in all Harita Nickel business units.

Erich Mongdong: Dedicating His Job to Serve Humanity

Ramadan 1444 Hijriah safari hosted by Harita Nickel on 7 to 13 April 2023 was quite draining energy. However, outside of Kawasi Village which is directly adjacent to the company's operations, its crew visited 13 other villages spread across 3 sub-districts using sea transportation. 
Those three sub-districts include Obi, South Obi and East Obi. Personnel are divided into 3 groups that each depart from the Harita Nickel operational site in Kawasi Village, Obi District. In the map, Obi sub-district is located on the west side of Obi island. So, the Safari Ramadan route is from the west to the south and east of the island of Obi.

Each group overnighted in each village visited before continuing their journey to the next village. Activities held in each village included donations to orphans, distribution of Eid gifts to the elderly and closed with iftar together until before Isha prayer. As activities finished in the evening, they traveled to the next village by sea on the following day.
Sea trucks carrying the crew were full of cardboard boxes and sacks containing Eid gifts. Those who were fasting worked together to distribute the aid packages. On another occasion, the crew boarded a long boat under the scorching heat of the beach in broad daylight to continue their safari to another village. 
An interesting story was told by Abu Bakar Sani, Community Relation Superintendent of Harita Nickel. According to him, Ramadan Safari is a reflection of tolerance between religious communities. &nbsp;
"If it was conveyed that religious life in this village is very harmonious, as well as in our team. For example, Ms. Sheila, even though she is non-Muslim, she is the one who is the busiest in preparing this activity," he said during the Ramadan Safari activities in South Obi District.

Sheila Munthia Simamora was coordinating logistics distribution to South Obi Sub-District. Along with the rest of the crew, Sheila admitted that she was happy despite having to travel from one village to another for several days.
"The religion that I believe in also teaches us to always spread love to all humanity. So, this activity is not limited to professional demands, but also practicing the noble values taught by all religions," she said.

Jei Tomas Siwabessy, pastor of Eben Haezer church in Wayaloar village, South Obi sub-district, said that breakfasting moments in a series of Ramadan safaris held by Harita Nickel became a means to strengthen relations between religious adherents.
"We are from the Eben Haezer church congregation, as well as Anugerah church, are very happy to be able to gather with our neighbors from Muslims and Muslims who are fasting Ramadan. Reportedly, Harita Nickel held a Ramadan 1444 Hijri safari to a number of villages on Obi Island on April 7 to 13, 2023. In this series of activities, the company distributed compensation to at least 520 orphans and 800 Eid gifts to the elderly, widows / widowers and religious leaders. 
Harita Nickel's Department Head of Community Affairs, Latif Supriadi said the Ramadan Safari activity is part of the Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) program that has been held regularly by the company every year. 
"Through this Ramadan Safari, we stay in touch and at the same time want to share happiness with the community, especially Muslims who are fasting Ramadan and will soon celebrate Eid al-Fitr," he explained.
In addition to Obi Island, Latif added, Harita Nickel collaborated with a number of agencies also distributed more than 3 thousand Eid packages in Ternate City and Labuha, North Maluku.

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management system is essential for sustainable mining operations. Implementing a leading OHS management system will not only provide a guarantee of protection for workers, but also enhance productivity and competitiveness of the company.
PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP), a Harita Group business unit engaged in nickel mining and downstream industries, recently received ISO 45001:2018 certificate from the world-class ISO inspection, verification and certification service provider, SGS.
Primus Priyanto as Head of Mine Technical PT TBP accompanied by Stefanus Bram Prasetyo Adi, Superintendent OHS & Training, said the ISO 45001: 2018 certificate is the first international standard in the world that sets requirements or guidelines for implementation of the OHS management system.

PT TBP received the ISO certificate for implementing the OHS management system properly, by taking proportional actions in preventing work accidents and maintaining health in the workplace.
He further said that this certificate will raise the company's value and competitiveness to the public. A sustainable business will be considered when it is able to provide added value to related stakeholders by practicing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles.

He continued, there is a complex and rigorous process behind the ISO certificate. The stages include preparation, assistance, then assessment of all aspects ranging from policy, organizational planning, implementation to management review.
"The most important thing about the ISO is documents and its documentation. The documents are available, documentation of its implementation is also provided. What is the procedure, how is its implementation in the field. Documents will be reviewed, field visitation will be conducted, and the last is the management review," said Stefanus, explaining the audit process.
He believes that this achievement is due to the commitment and cooperation of all parties in the company. This includes top management, employees and contractors.
"So, OSH concerns all operational aspects at the site, which includes cross-departments down to the contractors. As for us in the OSH and Training department as advisors, who help develop the SOP, while all parties are the implementers," Stefanus explained.
For example, to ride a vehicle in the site area, employees must be equipped with a SIMPER. There are procedures and requirements to be followed in order to obtain a Simper. In this case, he explained, the OHS team develops an operational system of procedures (SOP) to be carried out by employees to ensure safety at the work site.

Primus further said that the OHS culture does not only apply to all employees but also to every visitor coming to the operational area.
As the company's commitment to achieve the zero fatality target, including reducing occupational injuries and diseases, he continues to socialize the importance of K3 culture to all employees, including conducting inspections and imposing sanctions for anyone who violates it.

Ahead of the fasting month recently, an event titled "TBP Carnival Fun 2023" was held very lively in the Nirwana mess complex, where PT Trimegah Bangun Persada employees live at the Kawasi Site in Obi Island.
The event, which was held on the off week, was attended by at least 700 people consisting of PT TBP employees and also workers from a number of contractors on site. They were joined in 16 teams competing to showcase their creativity. Some wore costumes of puppet characters to those wearing superhero characters in movies.

Rudal Triawan, Mining Safety Superintendent, who was appointed as the coordinator of the joint committee said the TBP Fun 2023 Carnival was held to build togetherness among all employees and including contractor workers.

The Inside Story of How PT TBP Achieved ISO 45001 for OHS Management System

Harita Nickel continues to provide free medical check-ups and treatment to local residents in villages surrounding its mine. This event was held in Kawasi Village, located at SD Negeri 217 South Halmahera on Sunday (5/3/2023), presenting several medical specialists. 

 Harita Nickel's Community Development Superintendent, Panji Setyadi, said that the free medical check-up and treatment services are part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program in healthcare which has been routinely carried out by the company in several villages around the mine. 
According to him, this activity aims to improve the quality of residents' health and provide easier access for the community to a specialist doctor.
"In Kawasi itself, there is only a Village Maternity Clinic (Polindes) with a general practitioner. So in this activity, we brought in several specialists including pediatricians and internal medicine specialists to conduct examinations and treatment for residents who have medical problems," said Panji.
In addition, Panji hoped that this event could raise awareness of the importance of maintaining health, especially for children and the elderly who are at risk of suffering from internal diseases. 
He also revealed that in this event, Harita Nickel collaborated with the Health Office, Puskesmas, and Obi Regional Hospital, as well as Labuha Hospital. It is expected to create a harmonious synergy in providing health services to the community through partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Dr. Azhar K Hernus sp.A, a pediatrician invited by Harita Nickel exclusively in Kawasi Village explained, the majority of pediatric patients who came were found with respiratory problems and diarrhea. 
"If we look at the pattern of diseases in Halmahera, the majority of children we find with respiratory infections. Not even a few children suffer from Tuberculosis (TB) which is most likely triggered by transmission from their parents or neighbors," he explained.
Dr. Azhar also explained other than respiratory infections, diarrhea is the next health problem that is often suffered by children. This is often triggered by unhealthy lifestyles, such as poor sanitation.
On the other hand, internal medicine specialist, Dr. Raditia Reza Ramadoni, Sp.PD explained that most Kawasi residents over 40 years old suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol problems. According to him, this is triggered by the habit of consuming unhealthy food and drinks. Such as excessive sugary drinks and oily food.
The free medical check-up and treatment service that has become a routine program of Harita Nickel received a warm welcome from the local community.

Harita Nickel Invites Specialist Doctors to Kawasi for Free Medical Treatment

Hundreds of Kawasi villagers, Obi sub-district, South Halmahera, came to the low-cost grocery bazaar held by Harita Nickel. They were excited to buy basic food packages prepared by a nickel mining and downstream company operating in their village.
 
As a result, as many as 600 food packages provided by Harita Nickel were completely purchased by residents in just a few hours after the bazaar opened, Friday (3/3/2023) morning.
 
Umi Siar, one of the residents at the bazaar location, said she was happy to have access to groceries at low prices. According to her, this bazaar activity is very helpful for the residents, considering that the current food prices are quite expensive.
 
"Alhamdulillah, with this bazaar, we are greatly benefited because we are able to obtain a complete set of groceries at low prices," said Umi.&nbsp;
 
Like other residents, Umi hopes that this program can be sustained so that people have easier access to basic necessities at affordable prices.&nbsp;
 
The program, which was initiated by Harita Nickel's Community Relations and Community Development, aims to alleviate the villagers' burden on the high price of food in the market today.&nbsp;
 
Andri Rudiarto, Community Relations Superintendent Harita Nickel, explained the grocery package contains 5 kg of rice, 5 packs of instant noodles, 1 kg of sugar, 1 kg of flour, 1 liter of cooking oil, and tea. It is said that the local people can get the complete basic food package for only Rp 50,000.&nbsp;
 
"This event aims to help Kawasi villagers fulfill their daily food needs," said Andri.
 
Furthermore, Andri explained that the current bazaar targeted residents of Kawasi Village who needed a cheap food supply. The bazaar was held at two points, on the north and south sides of Kawasi Village, with a total of 600 food packages.

Kawasi Residents Enthusiastically Welcome Harita Nickel's Low-Cost Grocery Bazaar

Harita Nickel makes various efforts to deal with waste problems in Kawasi Village by providing facilities and infrastructure and inviting people to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
 
Kawasi is a small village located on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku, which is close to the operational site of a nickel mining and downstream company, Harita Nickel. Its location next to the coast makes this small village an outstanding natural scenery.

However, waste issues have become a 'stumbling block' that makes the scenery of Kawasi Village increasingly difficult to enjoy. In fact, this village is one of the economic centers on Obi Island. Many newcomers settle and run businesses in this village. The majority of the migrants come from Java Island, which captures a promising business opportunity provided by the existence of mining companies.
The waste problem in Kawasi Village has actually been around for a long time. Even before Harita Group's mining company set foot on Obi Island. This has become a homework assignment for the village government as well as the companies operating around Kawasi Village.
The people's awareness towards environmental cleanliness is still fairly weak. This frequently causes problems with the village's waterways. Not surprisingly, the village is subject to flooding during the rainy season. 
It doesn't stop there. Piles of stagnant garbage also cause serious problems for the environment and the health of residents. From polluted water conditions to health problems caused by the massive growth of mosquito larvae and bacteria around areas exposed to waste pollution.
Asmawati, one of the natives of Kawasi Village, explained that prior to the company, local residents often littered.
"Sometimes it was thrown into the river, sometimes into the sea. Some we also burned," she explained.
However, destroying waste by burning is still considered less than optimal to reduce pollution in Kawasi Village. The small village, which is now inhabited by more than 1,100 people, produces a massive amount of waste.
"For now, the company's efforts include the transportation of waste using trucks every two days a week," said Eko Sulistyo, CSR Community Development Supervisor.
Furthermore, Eko explained that in single transportation, the total waste hauled from Kawasi Village can reach 2 tons per day. Such a large amount of waste is then taken to the landfill located about 20 minutes from the village.
"Alhamdulillah, since the company's regular waste transportation program, the village environment has become cleaner and more comfortable," said Asmawati.
The company has also made efforts to provide trash cans in every corner of Kawasi Village. This will facilitate the process of transporting waste and make it easier for residents to dispose of waste in its place.
In addition to providing facilities and infrastructure, Harita Nickel through some of its business units also continues to make various efforts to raise residents' awareness to the importance of environmental cleanliness. Among them are through regular activities, including a social service entitled "Healthy and Clean Lifestyle" which was held during the K3 month commemoration period on January 12 - February 12, 2023. 
The activity involved employees, village officials, TNI/Police, and also local residents. Everyone worked together to clean up the trash scattered around the coast and Kawasi Village.
