Harita Nickel, an integrated nickel mining and processing technology company, once again held Harita Mengajar to improve access to education for children on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. Aligned with World Book Day, the event focused on the theme "Edugathering: Smart Reading, Smart World Viewing".
A total of 130 students from SD Negeri 217 South Halmahera and MI Al Habsyi Kawasi Village participated in the activity held at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend cinema, one of Harita Nickel's business lines that operates nickel processing and refining, on Saturday (27/4/2024). 
 
The students enthusiastically watched a movie about education entitled Sepatu Dahlan and also enjoyed listening to a fairy tale told by one of Tidore's writers, Shahryan Khamari.

Harita Nickel's Community Development Manager, Ifan Farianda, said Harita Mengajar is part of the company's Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) program focused on education.
 
He said that the company is fully committed to supporting education quality improvement in order to produce excellent local resources. He mentioned that this support is offered through various initiatives and activities, including Harita Mengajar, which currently aims to boost local children's reading interest.
 
"We encourage children to have an interest in reading from an early age, which will be their capital to continue learning and have more knowledge. It is hoped that local resources in the future can become a superior human resource, a ready-to-use workforce, so that they can be absorbed in the company and contribute to the development of their region in the future," he said.
 
Ifan further said, based on research conducted by his team on children in operational circles on Obi Island, it was found that as many as 6 out of 10 students in grade 2 were categorized as non-readers. While for the average of grades 1-6, the number reaches 50%. According to him, this figure is far below the national Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) average of 6% for the non-reader category.
 
"We're committed to supporting the government in improving education quality, focusing on enhancing literacy and encouraging reading interest, especially among children in our operational area on Obi Island," he said.
 
The company's initiative received a warm welcome from the teachers. Principal Wa Ode Musliana of MI Al Habsy in Kawasi Village expressed gratitude, stating that the event greatly supports the school's efforts to boost students' interest in reading.
 
"This is the first time for our children to watch a movie in a theater. We would like to thank the company for helping us to give students an understanding of the importance of reading and education for their future," she said.
 
Not only this activity, according to her, the company's programs have contributed a lot to efforts to improve the quality of education, especially for children in Kawasi Village. 
 
Meanwhile, one of the students, Amal Ramadan Solissa, shared his joy in watching movies in the theater and listening to fairy tales. According to him, this activity has provided new experiences and inspired him to study harder. When asked what his goal was, the 5th grade student of SD Negeri 217 South Halmahera spontaneously replied, "I want to be a pilot! So, I can take my friends on a trip to America!"

For information, Harita Mengajar has become a routine program held by Harita Nickel to support the improvement of education quality in its operational circle on Obi Island. The program is packaged in various activities, including sending employees to share knowledge such as foreign language teaching to joint learning visits in the company area. Since its launch, the program has reached 809 beneficiaries.

Edugathering: Harita Nickel Boosts Obi Children's Interest in Reading Through Movies and Storytelling

Youth Forum, a platform that provides an opportunity for young employees at Harita Nickel to discuss and share experiences, knowledge, and contribute to the Company and the community; was held festively for the second time on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the HPAL Activity Center Cinema at the Obi Site.
This time, the theme of Women's Empowerment was held in conjunction with the Kartini Day celebration. The spirit of RA Kartini, the hero of Indonesian women's emancipation, continues to live on today. She inspired women in the country to be equal to men. Now, women are no longer confined to home. Like men, Indonesian women have equal opportunities in the field of work, especially in the mining and mineral sector.
 
Attended by more than 250 young employees of Harita Nickel from various business units, the forum featured a number of speakers who shared their insights and journey towards empowerment. One of them was Rosalyn Wullandhary, Resource Modeling Specialist from Harita Nickel and the first female chairperson of the Indonesian Society of Economic Geology (MGEI) for the period 2024-2027. 
Rosalyn emphasized the important role of women in the mining industry who have contributed significantly to the growth of the industry. In her presentation, she discussed the challenges and stereotypes faced by women in the profession, as well as encouraging more women to take on leadership roles in what is still considered a male profession.

The second speaker, dr Yoan Clara, a Putri Indonesia Maluku 2020, general practitioner and stunting prevention activist, delivered a talk on 'Eastern Women Can Also Shine'. Clara shared how she overcame the obstacles she faced as a woman from eastern Indonesia. She emphasized the need to break away from limitations and highlighted the tremendous potential women have in achieving their dreams. Clara also highlights the importance of being an empowered woman and that this can start from small steps, such as accepting and loving yourself, motivating yourself, and continuing the process of developing yourself. 
 
Not only going one-way, the Youth Forum also provided opportunities for participants to ask questions directly to the speakers. The discussion also looked at concrete steps that can be taken to encourage and inspire young women to achieve. 
 
Moreover, the Youth Forum has successfully become a platform where the voices of young men and women can be heard, ideas can be exchanged, and inspiration can be shared. By empowering the younger generation and promoting gender equality, the Company is taking significant steps towards a more inclusive future. The event was also a testament to the tremendous potential of young employees of Harita and their ability to drive positive change in society.

Youth Forum 2024, Empowering Young Kartini of Harita Nickel

Ramadan is eagerly anticipated by Muslims worldwide, including thousands of Insan Harita on Obi Island. Despite being distant from the city and unable to celebrate with family, they remain determined to seek blessings and grace during this sacred month.
Dwi Retno Apriani Putri, a Dental Assistant at Harita Nickel Clinic, discovered the Ramadan spirit while balancing her duties at the Obi site. This year marks her second Ramadan on Obi Island since joining Harita Nickel in 2022. While she's accustomed to being away from family, this time feels different as she juggles her responsibilities as a wife and mother.
"This isn't the first time I've been away from my family for work, but it's my first time experiencing it since getting married and becoming a parent," she mentioned.
Even though she's familiar with working away from home, Dwi admits she often misses her husband and child. To ease her longing, she frequently connects with her small family through video calls.
During Ramadan, she often invites her husband and child to share virtual suhoor and iftar meals. She feels it helps ease her longing for the familial warmth of Ramadan.&nbsp;
Muhammad Safriyanto, a Community Development Staff at Harita Nickel, joined the company just six months ago. Safri, as his coworkers call him, expressed his joy in experiencing Ramadan vibe in eastern Indonesia for the first time, particularly at the Obi site.
 
&nbsp;“This is a new experience for me. I've been working away from home before, but it’s only this year that I’m enjoying Ramadan in Eastern Indonesia. The atmosphere is different. Maybe because everyone here is also far from their families. So, we all try to fill each other’s voids with activities that involve togetherness,” Safri said. Furthermore, he believes that the solidarity among the Insan Harita has somehow cured their longing for the warmth of Ramadan at home.
Ramadan on Obi Island brings challenges for Dwi, Safri, and other Insan Harita members. Despite being away from family, they push through with determination and enthusiasm until the end of this sacred month.&nbsp;

A Ramadan Story: Insan Harita's Devotion Despite Being Distant from Loved Ones

Harita Nickel reaffirmed its commitment to the community on Obi Island through the recent Safari Ramadan program. This year, the 1445 H Safari Ramadan covered 16 villages from 3 districts, including Obi District, South Obi, and East Obi.
Harita Nickel provided 4.930 parcels of Eid al-Fitr groceries to vulnerable groups such as the underprivileged, widows/widowers, and the elderly. They also supported 480 orphans, expanding their reach compared to previous years.
Last year, Safari Ramadan was conducted in 13 villages from 3 districts on Obi Island. This is a concrete implementation of the company’s commitment to social responsibility, with the aim of creating positive impacts for the local communities around its operational areas.

The beneficiaries, including Buton Village, have given positive feedback on the activity, appreciating the company's attention to the local community. Amir La Siti, the Head of Buton Village, expressed gratitude for the company's assistance, stating that it greatly benefits those in need.
 
"We aspire for the collaboration between the company, the village government, and the community to flourish. This ongoing partnership ensures that the company's presence continues to benefit the welfare of the community," he concluded.
 
Separately, Latif Supriadi, Head of External Affairs of Harita Nickel, explained that Safari Ramadan is a company initiative to build stronger connections with the local community while sharing blessings during the holy month of Ramadan. This program aims to improve the company's relationship and solidarity with the community, a bond they've upheld over time.
 
“This is our ongoing commitment to work with the community, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to contribute to the region and national development,” he emphasized.
 
The Safari Ramadan 2024 distribution ran from March 19 to April 8. Harita Nickel not only provided aid but also invited village representatives to break fast together. In Obi District, distribution was centralized in Baru Village on April 2, 2024, while in South Obi and East Obi Districts, the distribution was conducted earlier.

Harita Nickel Corporate Secretary Accepts "Very Good" Rating from SWA Media Group

Harita Nickel has been honored with the award for the Most Popular Institution/Corporation in Print and Online Media at the PR Indonesia Awards 2024. The award was presented by F. Sutedjo, Director of PR Indonesia Group, at The 9th Public Relation Indonesia Award (PRIA) 2024 event titled 'Communication that Inspires Civilization' in Denpasar, Bali, on Thursday, (07/03).
The category of Most Popular Institution/Corporation in Print and Online Media was conferred based on the total coverage and sentiment of reports across 256 print media and 12,425 online media outlets during the period from January 1st to December 31st, 2023. No less than 16 jurors were involved in the evaluation process, comprising senior PR practitioners, journalists, academics, and PR experts. In this year's 9th PRIA competition, a total of 699 entries were recorded from 129 institutions and corporations nationwide.

Harita Nickel Awarded as the Most Prevalent Corporate Entity in Print and Online Media Indonesian PR Version

President Director of <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/" target="_blank">PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk</a> (NCKL) or Harita Nickel, <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/about-us/management-profile" target="_blank">Roy Arman Arfandy</a>, accepted two awards at the Indonesia Best 50 CEO Awards & Indonesia Most Popular CEO 2024 event held by The Iconomics. At once, Roy received two awards, namely "Indonesia Popular CEO Awards" and "Special Mention: Top CEO in Cultural and Environmental Preservation Initiatives, Supporting Mineral Industry Downstreaming Through Integrated Technology". Head of Corporate Communications Haviez Gautama accepted the awards on behalf of Roy at the event held in March.

Best 50 CEO Awards & Indonesia Most Popular CEO 2024 is the result of an assessment of thousands of respondents based on several assessment parameters that have been determined by The Iconomics. This year, the total number of candidates was more than 200 CEOs from various industries. A respondent is asked to assess the CEO of his/her own institution and is allowed to assess the CEO of another institution in a similar industry/activity category. The final result is a combination of 4 parameters, namely Popularity, Competency, Crisis Leadership and Personality.

Harita Nickel President Director Accepts Indonesia Best 50 CEO & Popular Leader Awards

Two experts, Professor M. Zaki Mubarok from ITB's Faculty of Metallurgical Engineering and Professor Agus Jatnika Effendi from ITB's Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, paid a visit to <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/" target="_blank">PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk</a> (NCKL) or Harita Nickel on Obi Island. Their visit on Sunday (04/02/2024) challenged common misperceptions about mining's environmental impact. This collaboration between academia and industry players showcased the possibility of balancing industrial activities with <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/climate-change" target="_blank">environmental conservation</a>, offering a new perspective on mining practices.
ITB academics were invited to observe mining operations and the first <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/about-us/our-product" target="_blank">low-grade nickel ore</a> processing in Indonesia. The visit involved going over&nbsp;the <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/about-us/subsidiaries/mining" target="_blank">mining site</a>, <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/about-us/subsidiaries/smelter" target="_blank">smelting facility</a>, reclamation efforts, and Kawasi Village, the nearest community to the company's operations.

During the visit, the academics praised Harita Nickel for its innovative and efficient operations and acknowledged its positive impact on local economic development. This challenges the idea that all mining is automatically harmful to the environment.

"It was very impressive to witness Harita Nickel's operations on Obi Island firsthand. By looking at innovation and efficiency at every stage, we believe that Harita Nickel has a significant role in developing the nickel mining industry in Indonesia," said Prof. Zaki.
In addition to touring the company's sites, the two ITB professors also shared their expertise in a session attended by leaders from various departments at Harita Nickel.

During the visit, Prof. Zaki Mubarok explained about the progress in processing laterite nickel ore and metallurgical technologies in Indonesia. Prof. Agus Jatnika Effendi focused on environmental remediation and highlighted the company's responsibility to the local ecosystem.

"After seeing the company's reclamation efforts, we really appreciate Harita Nickel’s commitment to assessing the environmental impact of their operations," Prof. Agus remarked.&nbsp;

He added that Harita Nickel’s proactive approach to reclamation, even before completing mining, is exemplary. “Harita Nickel demonstrates how to navigate operational efficiency with environmental responsibility, hopefully inspiring other companies in the industry," he concluded

Navigating Harmony of Metallurgy and Ecology:  ITB Professors Answer the Call of Harita Nickel on Obi Island

<a href="https://tbpnickel.com/" target="_blank">Harita Nickel's</a> efforts to construct a bridge and worship facilities in Soligi village on Obi Island have been highly appreciated. The Regent of South Halmahera, Hasan Ali Bassam Kasuba, praises the company for its support of the local government's <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/human-rights/we-and-the-community/infrastructure-development" target="_blank">development</a> program.
“This is solid evidence that collaboration between the community and private sector drives development and yields tangible results. On behalf of Soligi Village's local government and residents, we express our gratitude,” he said during the inauguration of the bridge and worship facilities in Soligi Village on Saturday, March 2, 2024.
 
The Regent hopes that the construction of the Soligi Water Bridge will improve the connectivity and accessibility for local residents, thereby supporting local economic growth and the quality of life for the community. 
 
Similarly, the construction of worship facilities, such as a mosque and musalla, is expected to strengthen the resident's faith. He emphasizes that this is in line with the vision and mission of the local government, where development activities are based on faith.
 
Furthermore, the Regent urges maintaining and improving the excellent collaboration between the company and the community.

Soligi Village leader, Madaisi La Siriali, thanked both the local government and the company for their support. He believes the company's help in constructing a bridge and renovating worship facilities greatly benefits the communities.
“Thank God and to the company for helping us to build and renovate our worship facilities. It motivates us to continue worshiping, strengthen our faith, and foster Islamic brotherhood. Also thanks to the company for the construction of the Soligi Water Bridge, it’s a blessing for us, the people of Soligi Village, to have a bridge this year,” he said.
 
Soligi Village lies within Harita Nickel's operating area on Obi Island. The construction of a 10-meter bridge, starting in October 2023 and finishing in January 2024, now enhances local connectivity.
Harita Nickel allocated Rp 1.25 billion for bridge construction and Rp 950 million for the Musalla's renovation in Soligi Village. The Musalla is now equipped with amenities like fans, cabinets, Al-Quran, wall clocks, prayer mats, ladies' prayer gowns, sarongs, curtains, fuel generators, and sound systems.
In addition, Harita Nickel also renovated the Al-Baqi Mosque by painting, renovating the pulpit, roof deck repair and application of waterproofing layers and electrical network fireplace with a total cost of Rp 300 million.

Meanwhile, Latif Supriyadi, Head of External Relations Harita Nickel, expressed his appreciation for the close collaboration between the company and the community of Soligi Village. “This progress wouldn't be possible without strong collaboration. We're dedicated to actively supporting the sustainable development and well-being of our communities,” Latif concluded.
He explained that the company prioritizes responsible and sustainable business practices. The activities in Soligi Village are under the Community Development and Empowerment Program (CDE), addressing health, education, economic growth, infrastructure, and socio-cultural aspects.
 The ceremony started with a ribbon-cutting at the Soligi Water Bridge and Al-Aqhirra Prayer Hall. Then, officials inspected the supporting facilities and checked the Al-Baqi Mosque renovation. Finally, local students from elementary, middle, and high schools performed cultural acts to conclude the event.

Building Bridges, Building Faith: A Symbol of Progress and Unity in Soligi Village

Harita Nickel accepted the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Recognized Commitment 2023 award from the Investor Daily ESG Appreciation Night event in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 27th, 2024.
This award was presented to companies with strong commitment and engagement in <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/about-sustainability" target="_blank">sustainability</a> within their operations.

"On behalf of Harita Nickel, I extend my gratitude to Investor Daily," stated Tonny Gultom, Harita Nickel's Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Director, following the event. "ESG is an integral part&nbsp; Harita Nickel's operations, encompassing our social, environmental, and governance activities," he added.

The award scoring was conducted by the Investor Daily research and development team in collaboration with an independent jury, namely Dr. Uun Sunarsih SE, M.SI., CSRS, CSRA, and Dr. Erna Lovita S.E., M.Si., Ak., C.A., CSRS., CSRA. The evaluation criteria included the ESG risk decomposition concept and the quality of the ESG report.

Tonny mentioned that Harita Nickel identified the importance of sustainability early in its production process. For instance, instead of discarding the extracted topsoil during the mining process, the company stored, processed, and reused it in the <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/sustainability/climate-change/biodiversity" target="_blank">reclamation and revegetation</a> process.

Additionally, Tonny highlighted that the smelting process (from nickel ore to ferronickel) generates significant production waste, known as the nickel slag. However, the company utilizes the residual production as filler for mine holes and also in brick production.

"Nickel slag is used in our factory's construction as it can serve as a substitute for sand,” Tonny explained.&nbsp;

Harita Nickel also implements an Occupational Safety and Health Management System (SMK3) for industrial workers and a Mining Safety Management System (SMKP) for mining workers.

Additionally, the company has obtained <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/media/kabar-obi/highlight/the-inside-story-of-how-pt-tbp-achieved-iso-45001-for-ohs-management-system" target="_blank">ISO 45001</a> certification, an international standard that specifies requirements for an <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/sustainability/occupational-health-safety" target="_blank">occupational health and safety (K3)</a> management system.

"We can achieve optimum production when our workers can work safely," he concluded.
